Terveiset kirjaston opetus- ja tietopalveluista | Regards from the Training and information services at the library

(Please, scroll down to read in English.)

I started as the head of Training and information services at the University of Eastern Finland Library at the beginning of 2021. Before working at the University of Eastern Finland, I served as the head of Education and research support services at the Tritonia Academic Library at the University of Vaasa. In addition to library and digital education development tasks at Tritonia, I have worked as a teacher of library and information services at Turku University of Applied Sciences. I completed my own Master’s Degree in Administrative Science, Master’s Degree in Social Sciences and Doctorate in Social Sciences at the universities of Lapland, Tampere and Turku.

As a new member of the UEF Library staff, I had the chance to spend January in the expert tutelage of my predecessor, Helena Silvennoinen-Kuikka. In the end of January, Helena was waved off to retirement in a bittersweet and heartfelt remote ceremony, and the two-member head of Training and information services was cut down to its usual one-member formation at the beginning of February. The team now consists of me, serving as the person in charge of support services for education and guidance related to information retrieval and management as well as research support services at the library.
The services of the UEF Library are produced by Customer services, Training and information services, Internal services, Collection services and Library IT & publishing Services. All five services cover both the Joensuu and Kuopio campuses. This means that remote meetings were commonplace at the library even before the Covid-19 pandemic, but remote work during the past year has yielded even more comprehensive and versatile forms of remote cooperation even at the library.

Training and Information Services are in charge of information retrieval and management training and guidance at the library as well as information services and research support. Services are offered to the entire university community from first-year students to post-doctoral researchers and staff. Information retrieval training and information services have long traditions in academic libraries, but in particular during the past ten years, research support services have emerged alongside them. The library offers support services for activities such as research data management, publishing, article processing charges, research and researcher visibility, research evaluation and questions related to open science.

These services can of course not be provided by a single service. Instead, research support services are provided by the library across service boundaries and even more comprehensively across university unit boundaries in cooperation with the library, IT services, development services, research services and general administration and legal services in the research data support network. The project “Developing data support as part of research support” (Datatuen kehittäminen osana tutkimuksen tukea) that started in the beginning of February aims at developing and unifying the data support services offered by the different university units.

Please contact the library, including me, if you have any questions regarding the matters mentioned above and all things related to training and guidance in information retrieval and management, information services and research support.

Haluaisin esitellä teille Paulan | I would like to introduce Paula

(Please, scroll down to read in English.)

Kuopion kampuskirjaston henkilökunta on tänä vuonna saanut joukkoihinsa tuiki tarpeellisen vahvistuksen, kun jokapaikan IT-tuki Paula aloitti työnsä huhtikuussa kirjastojen ollessa koronan takia suljettuina.

Jatkuva uuden oppiminen on minulle elinehto.

Kaksi naista - toineen tietokoneen ääressä kirja kädessä, toinen hänen takanaan, kameraan huoneessa, jossa on keltainen tiiliseinä ja musta kirjahylly täynnä kirjoja.
Kuopion kampuskirjaston lainaustoimisto jouduttiin kesällä remontin vuoksi siirtämään väistötilaan. Hikisen urakan päätteeksi Piia testaa, onko Paula saanut tietokoneen kytkennät kohdilleen. | The Kuopio Campus Library lending office had to be moved to an evasive space in the summer due to renovations. After the sweaty chore, Piia tests to see if Paula got the computer switches right.

The staff of the Kuopio Campus Library has welcomed a necessary confirmation this year, when Paula, the IT support, started working in April with libraries closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Since then, Paula has become familiar with both librarians and Kuopio Campus Libraries, but do you know Paula? I would like to introduce her to you.

Who are you and what are you doing in the library?

My name is Paula Honkanen and I work as an IT Service Advisor at Kuopio Campus Library and KUH Medical Library. My main responsibility is IT support for equipment and software used by the University Library staff; equipment maintenance and staff IT advice and training. I am also involved in the development of digital library services, as well as the acquisition of equipment and software. At the request of customer service, I also guide the library customers in the use of the printers and computers. Because of my duties, I have received the nickname Cyber-Honkanen from a colleague.

We’ve already discovered that you were not born yesterday. Where did you get your skills from?

Computers and software have been part of my daily life for 30 years now. At first, the IT industry was mainly a hobby for me in the form of programming and gaming. Since then, I trained in programming and multimedia engineering.

I have gained work experience both in domestic and international organisations as a consultant, project manager, financial management systems expert and application advisor.

Constantly learning something new is a lifeline for me. I want to bring my skills to the aid of the organisation and promote things.

How does the library work feel? Is the job what you expected, or have you encountered surprises?

Working in a academic library has been awesome. The diverse know-how of the employees impressed me even in the first few days. From day one, I’ve been happy to be included in such a diverse group of professionals.

Uuden työntekijän tervehdys! | Meet a new staff member!

(Please, scroll down to read in English.)

Olen Marika Mahlavuori ja vapaa-ajalla minut tavoittaa usein tenttikirja, jonkin sortin muistikirja tai neulepuikot kädessä. Tällä hetkellä puikoilla on tekeillä kuudes islantilaisneulepusero.

Siirryin elokuun alussa opetusmaailmasta Joensuun kampuskirjastoon tietoasiantuntijan tehtäviin.

Marika etätöissä | Marika working from home

My name is Marika Mahlavuori and in my free time I can often be found reading set books, writing in a notebook, or knitting. I am currently knitting my sixth Icelandic wool sweater. I also enjoy jogging and making coffee on the open fire.

I have lived in the Joensuu region my whole life, and I completed my master’s degree in Finnish history in the University of Eastern Finland. I got swept away by my studies in my second year, and I have since studied educational sciences (from the point of view of a subject teacher, class and special class teacher as well as a principal), theology and social sciences. Currently, I am working on information studies and postgraduate studies in Finnish history.

I took the leap from the world of teaching to become an information specialist at the Joensuu Campus Library in August. I started my work by working mostly from home due to the Covid-19 pandemic. You may find me teaching information retrieval, for example, and serving customers from time to time.
