Finding Lordi – a dive into electronic cultural materials

Lordi tuijottaa kohti kameraa | Lordi staring at camera

Finnish digital publications and online materials stored by the National Library of Finland are available at the University of Eastern Finland’s campus libraries, on the legal deposit workstations. These workstations are presented in the article Legal deposit workstations – a pathway to electronic cultural materials.

In the following article, we will take a closer look at the materials the workstations provide access to. We are going to see how Lordi’s win in the Eurovision Song Contest was received in 2006. You can enlarge the attached images by clicking them.

Radio and TV Archive (Ritva database)

We want to watch the 2006 final of the Eurovision Song Contest. The broadcast cannot be viewed in its entirety in Yle’s (Finnish Broadcasting Company) online services Areena and Living Archive.

Finnish cultural materials menu in a web browser

We go to the Radio and TV Archive from the main menu of the legal deposit workstation.

Search interface of the Ritva database

Yle’s broadcast can be found in the Ritva database using the search terms “euroviisut” (a Finnish word for the Eurovision Song Contest) and “2006”. The programme, more than three hours long, “Eurovision 2006: Finaali – Ateena”, was broadcast between 20 and 21 May 2006.

Timeline in the Ritva database

You can replay the broadcast at any point on the timeline.

Digital collections (Digi)

What did Finnish newspapers and magazines write about Lordi’s win? Let’s go see newspaper and magazine material digitised by the National Library of Finland.

List of serial publications in the Digi database

When we limit the list of serial publications to 2006, we see that not many newspapers or magazines have yet been digitised for that period. We can still find some titles.

Search interface of the Digi database

Using the search terms “Lordi” and “euroviisut” and limiting the search to 2006 produce nearly two hundred hits.

Matches from serial publications

There are Lordi stories in both magazines and newspapers.

Page of a magazine

You can read the magazines in your browser. The used keywords are highlighted in the text.

You can also open the magazine for reading in Adobe Acrobat Reader.

The further we go into the past, the more digitised newspapers and magazines can be found. On the other hand, there are also many of them from recent years in Digi.

Thanks to the Tutkain project, university personnel and students can also use Digi materials from their own devices through Haka login. In this case, they cannot access the most recent volumes.

You can examine press articles from 2006 more extensively from microfilm or printed newspapers and magazines, or via the publication’s own digital archives subject to a fee. You can also find online magazines in the Finnish Web Archive.

Finnish Web Archive

What was written on the Internet – online magazines, websites, online forums – about Lordi’s performance in Eurovision? Websites published in 2006 are often no longer available on the Internet openly, at least not in their original format. However, old web pages have been stored in the Finnish Web Archive maintained by the National Library of Finland since 2006.

Search interface of the Finnish Web Archive

The search terms “Lordi” and “euroviisut” yield eight videos and more than 140,000 websites.

Tweets

Looks like the Web Archive search also finds Finnish tweets.

Links to web pages found in the search

Some of the websites listed in the search are pages in the Bassoradio forum.

Digital legal deposit materials (Varia)

We have yet to visit the Varia database in which the National Library of Finland has collected both electronic legal deposit copies delivered by publishers and material it has digitised by itself and whose copyright is valid.

Search results in Varia

The search terms “Lordi” and “euroviisut” yield more than two hundred references in Varia.

Salon Seudun Sanomien etusivulla Lordi-yhtye | Lordi on the front page of Salon Seudun Sanomat

These include some numbers of the newspaper Salon Seudun Sanomat. They have not been digitised by the National Library like the newspapers and magazines in the Digi database. Instead, the files have been disclosed as legal deposit copies by publishers.

Aku Ankan kansi | Cover of a Finnish Donald Duck magazine

Varia also has legal deposit copies of e-books and music recordings as well as digital Aku Ankka (Donald Duck) magazines. In the early May 2007, a Lordi-themed comic was published in Aku Ankka.

Conclusion

Although the materials presented above can only be read at the legal deposit workstations, you can search them from your home computer. The Ritva database directory is open to everyone. Similarly, the Digi newspaper and magazine list can be browsed openly, and even content from the period before 1940 – partly even after that – is open to everyone. You can also search the Web Archive directory from anywhere.

The Varia search interface alone can only be accessed from the legal deposit workstations. However, Varia’s titles can be searched in UEF Primo and Finna, which both contain fairly comprehensive lists.

Vapaakappaletyöasemat – väylä sähköisiin kulttuuriaineistoihin | Legal deposit workstations – a pathway to electronic cultural materials

(Please, scroll down to read in English.)

Itä-Suomen yliopiston kirjasto on yksi Suomen kuudesta vapaakappalekirjastosta.

The Legal Deposit Act (Act No 1433/2007 on Collecting and Preserving Cultural Materials) requires that the National Library of Finland deposit not only printed but also Finnish digital publications and online materials and make them available to researchers and other users. (More detailed information on printed materials can be found in the article Start using cultural materials: the library’s printed legal deposit copies.)

The National Library collects electronic material both independently and in the form of donations received from publishers. In addition to the National Library of Finland, the material is available to customers on legal deposit workstations at other legal deposit libraries, as well as at the Library of Parliament and at the National Audiovisual Institute.

University of Eastern Finland Library is one of the six legal deposit libraries in Finland. A legal deposit workstation is available to customers at both the Joensuu and Kuopio Campus Libraries.

Both legal deposit workstations are open and freely available during the libraries’ opening hours. If you wish, you can reserve a workstation for a specific time by contacting the library’s customer service.

The following materials are available at the legal deposit workstations:

  • Finnish Web Archive. Finnish online resources collected by the National Library of Finland since 2006.
  • Ritva. Radio and Television Archive, which contains the programme streams of key Finnish channels from 2009 onwards and the television programmes from 1957-2008, digitised by the Finnish Broadcasting Company.
  • Varia. Legal deposits of books, magazines and newspapers in electronic format, as well as music recordings, all obtained as donations. In addition, books, small print media, maps, games and recordings digitised by the National Library that still have copyright protection.
  • Digi. Copyrighted journals and newspapers since 1940, digitized by the National Library of Finland. Materials older than this are also available openly online.

You can read, listen, and watch the contents of the resources. For listening to radio and television programs and audio files, the workstations are equipped with headphones.

You cannot make a digital copy of the contents but may make printouts of web pages and journals using printers connected to workstations. Printouts, costing 25 cents apiece, are paid at the library’s service desk. You can film and photograph images on the computer screen .

The legal deposit workstations do not have Internet connection. The most common office software is installed on the workstations, but you cannot save files to your own storage medium or send them by email. In other words, it is advisable to bring your own laptop when working on the legal deposit workstations.

Materials accessible from the workstations are presented in more detail in the article Finding Lordi – a dive into electronic cultural materials.

Viitteidenhallintaohjelmat muutoksessa: RefWorksin tilaus lakkaa vuoden 2022 lopussa | Reference management tools in change: RefWorks’ subscription will cease at the end of 2022

(Please, scroll down to read in English.)

Kyselyn vastauksista nousi vahvasti esille toive kirjaston tarjoamasta viitteidenhallinnan tuesta  jatkossakin.

The reference management program RefWorks’ subscription will be ceased at the end of 2022 due to contract technical reasons. Termination of subscription applies to both the current ProQuest RefWorks and the previous version of Legacy. Unfortunately, buying a personal RefWorks licence is not possible.

In February 2022, the library surveyed the current use of various reference management programs at our University and users’ wishes and thoughts about future tools. We received nearly 200 responses — thanks to all respondents! Responses have greatly assisted in selecting new reference management programs and further planning support for reference management.

Mendeley and Zotero introduced from autumn 2022, RefWorks will remain until the end of 2022

The majority of the respondents of the survey currently use RefWorks or Mendeley. Mendeley received the most support in the poll as a new reference management program. A continuation of RefWorks was also hoped for, but unfortunately it won’t be an option after 2022. Third ranked open-source Zotero.

Results of the survey. Pie chart: EndNote 37%, Mendeley 83%, RefWorks 77%, Zotero 47%, Other 13%.
Library’s survey charted hopes for a future reference management program. The top three were Mendeley, RefWorks and Zotero.

In the future, the library will offer support for free versions of both Mendeley and Zotero. The library creates guides and organizes trainings starting next autumn. Help and guidance for transferring references from RefWorks will be also provided.

Easy to use and suitable reference manager for everyone?

Hopes for the features of reference management tools were repeated in different responses, with ease of use, secure functionality without breaks and bugs, retention of access even after UEF affiliation, functionality with different versions of software and offline use, and easy customizability of reference styles. Many respondents raised various problems with RefWorks as well as other programs. It is quite challenging to find a reference manager suitable for everyone. However, the basic functions of reference managers are mainly similar: when you know how to use one, you know how to use the other as well. Comparing different programs, one can find the most suitable for themselves.

Respondents expressed the wish for guidance and training in the use of reference management programs and the transfer of references from RefWorks

The library also asked for wishes and comments regarding reference management, particularly in relation to the support and guidance provided by the library. The key wishes were prompt and clear information on possible changes to the programs, assistance and guidance on references transfer should it be decided to abandon RefWorks, and clear instructions for the use of new tools in the form of short tutorial videos. The desire for continued support for reference management offered by the library was strongly expressed in the survey responses. These things are already being prepared by the library — it should be mentioned that many librarians have already started to get acquainted with Mendeley and Zotero’s secrets. The introduction of new reference management programs and the abandonment of RefWorks will also be informed and recalled well in advance next autumn.
