Opintojaksoja ja lyhytkursseja
Lukuvuonna 2022–2023 Itä-Suomen yliopiston kirjasto tuotti Itä-Suomen yliopiston opetustarjontaan 38 opintopisteytettyä opintojaksoa. Tiedonhaun ja -hallinnan opetusta toteutettiin 27 suomenkieliselle kandidaatintutkinto-ohjelmille ja 7 englanninkieliselle kandidaatin- tai maisteriohjelmalle. Tiedonhaun opintojaksot toteutetaan pääosin erillisinä yhden opintopisteen opintojaksoina tieteenaloittain. Lääketieteen opinnoissa ja toksikologian maisteriopinnoissa tiedonhaku on integroitu osaksi laajempia viestinnän ja akateemisten opiskelutaitojen opintojaksoja Lääketieteellinen tieto ja viestintä (3 op) ja Academic Study Skills in Toxicology (5 op).
Kaikkien suomenkielisten maisteriohjelmien opiskelijoille oli tarjolla vapaasti valittavana opintojaksona Syventävät informaatiotaidot -opintojakso, joka auttaa erityisesti gradun tiedonhaun ja -hallinnan kysymyksissä. Lukuvuodesta 2023–2024 alkaen vastaava opintojakso löytyy opinto-oppaasta nimellä Tutkielmantekijän informaatiotaidot. Tohtorikoulun opetustarjontaan kirjasto tuottaa opintojaksot tutkimuksen tiedonhausta ja -hallinnasta, tutkimusaineistonhallinnasta ja avoimesta tieteestä.
Opintopisteytettyjen opintojaksojen lisäksi kirjasto tarjoaa tiedonhaun ja -hallinnan sekä tutkimuksen tuen lyhytkursseja UEFin opiskelijoille ja UEFin ja KYSin henkilöstölle. Lukuvuonna 2022–2023 suosittuja olivat mm. Zotero-viitteidenhallintaohjelman ja aineistonhallintasuunnitelmien (DMP) lyhytkurssit. Kirjaston opetusta toteutetaan etä-, lähi- ja hybridiopetuksena ja opintojaksoja toteutetaan verkko- ja monimuoto-opetuksena.
Lukuvuoden 2022-2023 opintojaksopalautetta
Kirjaston lukuvuoden 2022–2023 opintojaksojen opiskelijapalautteissa erinomaisina pidettiin opintojaksojen tehtäviä ja oppimateriaaleja, joita kiitettiin hyviksi, hyödyllisiksi, selkeiksi ja innostaviksi. Muistathan, että kirjaston tuottamat oppimateriaalit ovat avoimesti saatavissa kaikille tiedonhakijoille myös opintojaksojen ulkopuolella. Kiitosta saivat myös tiedonhaun käytännön harjoitukset, tehtävien liittyminen omaan tutkimusaiheeseen, opintojaksojen viestintä ja vuorovaikutus, opettajan antama palaute sekä mahdollisuus suorittaa opintojakso itsenäisesti ja joustavasti omassa aikataulussa. Opintojaksoja kokonaisuudessaan kiitettiin hyvin jäsennellyiksi, kattaviksi ja hyödyllisiksi.
Kandidaattiopiskelijoille suunnatut tiedonhaun opintojaksot suositellaan suoritettaviksi kandidaatintutkielman yhteydessä. Tämä suoritusajankohta sai kiitosta myös opiskelijapalautteissa, sillä tiedonhaun opintojakso myös auttoi kandidaatintutkielman kirjoittamisen aloittamisessa. Tiedonhaun opintojakson opintojensa loppuun jättäneet puolestaan katuivat opintojakson lykkäämistään. Kehittämisehdotuksissa toivottiin sekä lisää vuorovaikutusta, visualisointia ja video-oppimateriaaleja että kirjallista oppimateriaalia yhtenä (PDF-tiedosto) kokonaisuutena pienempien osasten sijaan. Huomioimme nämä palautteet opintojaksojen kehittämistyössämme.
Opintojaksolla opittuina hyödyllisinä asioina mainittiin tiedonhaku, tiedonhakutekniikat, hakusanojen valinta, maksulliset tietokannat, tieteellisen tiedon merkitys sekä tekoälyn käyttömahdollisuudet. Maisteriopintojen Syventävät informaatiotaidot -opintojakso ja tohtorikoulun opintojaksot saivat samoin kiitosta mielenkiintoisista sisällöistä, joista uusina opittuina asioina nostettiin esille asiasanoitus, viitteidenhallinta, tieteellinen julkaiseminen, tutkijan näkyvyys, bibliometriikka, data-arkistot, tutkimusdatan käsittelyn periaatteet ja avoimen tieteen mahdollisuudet työelämässä.

Kirjasto kiittää annetusta opintojaksopalauteesta! Palautteet ovat arvokas lisä kirjaston tiedonhaun ja tutkimuksen tuen opintojaksojen kehittämistyössä. Study units and short courses
In the study year 2022-2023, the University of Eastern Finland’s Library produced 38 credited study units for the University’s study catalogue. Teaching on information retrieval and management was produced for 27 Finnish-language bachelor’s programs and 7 English-language bachelor’s or master’s programs. Study units on information retrieval are mainly organised as separate, discipline-specific courses worth one credit each. For studies in medicine and the master’s degree studies in toxicology, information retrieval is integrated as part of the broader study units in communication and academic study skills Philosophy of science and communications in medicine (3 cp) and Academic Study Skills in Toxicology (5 cp).
All students in Finnish-language master’s programmes were offered an optional course called Advanced information skills (in Finnish), which was particularly useful for information retrieval and management during thesis writing. From the academic year 2023-2024 onwards, the corresponding course will be available in the study guide under the title Information skills for master’s student (in Finnish). In addition, the library produces courses in research information retrieval and management, research data management and open science for the Doctoral School’s study catalogue.
In addition to credit courses, the library offers short courses in information retrieval and management as well as research support for UEF students and UEF and KUH staff. In the academic year 2022-2023, popular short courses included the short courses in the reference management software Zotero and Data Management Plans (DMP). The library’s teaching is organised as distance, face-to-face and hybrid teaching, and courses are organised online and in blended learning.
Course feedback for the study year 2022–2023
The student feedback on the library’s courses for the academic year 2022-2023 included mentions of excellent assignments and learning materials, which were praised as good, useful, clear, and inspiring. It is worth mentioning that the learning materials produced by the Library are openly available to all information seekers, even outside the course. The practical exercises for information retrieval, the linking of the assignments to individual research topics, the communication and interaction during the course, the feedback from the teacher, and the possibility to complete the course independently and flexibly within one’s own schedule were also praised. The courses as a whole were praised as well-structured, comprehensive, and practical.
The information retrieval courses for bachelor’s degree students are recommended to be taken while working on the bachelor’s thesis. This timing was also praised in the student feedback, as the course was considered helpful for the starting of the thesis writing itself. Similarly, those who had left the course to the end of their studies regretted having postponed it. Suggestions for improvement included more interaction, visualisation, and the inclusion of video learning materials, as well as compiling the written learning materials into a single (PDF) file rather than smaller chunks. We will consider this feedback in our course development work.
Students listed information retrieval, information retrieval techniques, search term selection, knowledge on paid databases, the importance of scientific information, and the potential uses of artificial intelligence as valuable things they learned on the course. The master’s degree course in advanced information skills and the doctoral school courses were also praised for their interesting content, with the following new lessons being highlighted: subject indexing, reference management, scientific publishing, researcher visibility, bibliometrics, data archives, principles of research data management, and the potentials of open science in working life.
