Harjoittelija valmistautuu lähtöön | Intern prepares to leave

Kirjoitin edellisen tekstin tähän blogiin elokuun lopulla. Nyt kun kirjoitan tätä tekstiä, ollaan melkein puolessa välissä joulukuuta, ja työharjoitteluni Joensuun kampuskirjastossa lähenee loppuaan. Olen harjoittelun aikana päässyt tekemään niin paljon erilaisia työtehtäviä sekä kuulemaan erilaisia perehdytyksiä, että tuntuisi miltei mahdottomalta listata niitä kaikkia tässä. Niinpä yritän tiivistää harjoittelun sisältöä pääpiirteisiinsä.

Työharjoitteluni alkoi elokuussa yleisemmällä tutustumisella Joensuun kampuskirjastoon, sen tiloihin ja kokoelmiin, ja ylipäänsä siellä työskentelyyn. Tämän lisäksi pääsin tutustumaan tarkemmin myös tietoaineistopalveluiden työtehtäviin, kuten poistojen tekemiseen kirjaston kokoelmista sekä uuden aineiston hankintaan ja saapumiskäsittelyyn. Syyskuussa vuorossa olivat asiakaspalvelut sekä opetus- ja tietopalvelut, mikä tarkoitti useiden perehdytysten lisäksi luonnollisesti myös asiakaspalvelutiskissä päivystämistä sekä tiedonhaun opetustunnin tarkkailua. Lisäksi keskusteltiin avoimesta tieteestä ja että mitä se tarkoittaa kirjaston kannalta. Pääsin myös seuraamaan Celia-asiakkuuden tekemistä, ja olin mukana yliopiston kirjaston pisteellä uusien opiskelijoiden infomarkkinoilla.

Lokakuussa tutustuin kirjaston verkko- ja julkaisupalveluiden toimintaan. Tämä tarkoitti monia mielenkiintoisia esityksiä esimerkiksi erilaisista järjestelmistä, jotka ovat kirjastohenkilökunnan käytössä. Yksi ehkä kiinnostavimmista esityksistä käsitteli kirjastojärjestelmien historiaa erityisesti Joensuun kampuskirjastolla. Tein myös muutamia pienimuotoisia työtehtäviä, joiden aiheena oli avoin oppiminen. Lisäksi pääsin vierailemaan Kuopion kampuskirjastolla, KYSin kirjastolla, sekä vapaakappaleyksikössä Joensuussa. Vierailut olivat todella mielenkiintoisia, sillä molemmilla kampuskirjastoilla on aivan oma tunnelmansa. Vapaakappaleyksikkö taas yllätti laajuudellaan, sillä aina kun ajattelin, että tämän on pakko olla tässä, löytyi jonkin nurkan takaa lisää hyllyjä täynnä aineistoa. Marraskuussa keskusteltiin kirjaston hallinnon asioista ja että minkälainen vaikutus yliopiston säännöillä ja linjauksilla on kirjaston hallintoon. Olin myös mukana Joensuun kampuskirjaston ryhmätyötilakyselyn suunnittelussa. Nyt joulukuussa olen puolestaan saanut itsenäisesti jatkaa jo aiemmin opittuja työtehtäviä, vaikka uuttakin asiaa on hyvin ehtinyt vielä mahtua sinne ja tänne.

Läpi koko harjoittelun olen aikatauluni sen mahdollistaessa pyörinyt mukana asiakaspalveluvuoroissa, ja omaksi yllätyksekseni olen myös pitänyt asiakaspalvelussa päivystämisestä enemmän kuin uskalsin odottaa. Kokoelmiin liittyvät tehtävät ovat myös olleet erittäin vahvasti mukana koko syksyn ajan: olen päässyt tekemään poistoja, ottamaan vastaan uusia kirjoja ja lehtiä, tekemään selkätarroja kirjoihin, hyllyttämään palautettuja kirjoja, kuvailemaan aineistoa, pakkaamaan Varastokirjastoon lähetettävää aineistoa ja korjaamaan lainassa kärsineitä kirjoja. Olen myös päässyt postittamaan kirjoja kaukolainaan muihin kirjastoihin ja ollut mukana kasaamassa (useimpia) syksyn fyysisiä aineistonäyttelyitä Joensuun kampuskirjastolla. Lisäksi olen osallistunut moniin erilaisiin tiimipalavereihin ja työryhmien kokouksiin.

Viimeiset viisi kuukautta ovatkin olleet erittäin mielenkiintoisia (ja kiehtovia, jännittäviä, mukaansatempaavia, plus joukko muita synonyymeja), ja tuntuu että olen oppinut paljon. Minulla on ylipäänsä paljon ajatuksia kuluneesta syksystä ja työharjoittelusta, mutta niiden pukeminen sanoiksi on yllättävän haastavaa. Tämä syksy, ja sen mukana harjoittelu, ovat menneet todella nopeasti, enkä osaa kuvitella, että ne olisivat tämän mukavammin voineet mennäkään. Syksy on kulunut todella nopeasti varmasti osittain kirjaston henkilökunnan ansiosta. Harjoitteluni ei varmasti olisi ollut edes puoleksi näin hyvä tai mielenkiintoinen ilman kirjaston henkilökuntaa, joka on pyytänyt minua mukaan kokeilemaan sitä tai tätä työtehtävää ja tarttunut heti niihin muutamiin toiveisiin, joita minulla on harkan sisältöön ollut. Työkaverit ovat ylipäänsä olleet todella mukavia. On ollut myös todella kiinnostavaa kuulla pitkään kirjastossa työskennelleiltä henkilöiltä kuvauksia siitä, kuinka paljon kirjastotyö on muuttunut suhteellisen lyhyessä ajassa.

Jos olisin kertaakaan epäillyt, onko kirjastoala minulle sopiva, niin tämän työharjoittelun jälkeen ne ajatukset olisivat varmasti poissa, mutta en ole kyllä hetkeäkään asiaa epäillyt.

The last post I wrote for this blog was published at the end of August. Now, as I write this, we’re nearly halfway through December, and my internship at Joensuu Campus Library is almost over. During my internship I’ve had the chance to do so much and hear so many presentations on different topics, that it feels near impossible to list all of them here. Because of this I’m going to try and summarize the main points from the last five months.

My internship began in August with a more general look into the Joensuu Campus Library, both working here, as well as the library building and the collections themselves. In addition to this I was introduced more closely to the work done in library’s collection services, such as removals, and acquisition. In September it was the turn for customer services, and training and information services. Naturally this meant, besides the many presentations, that I got to work at the customer service desk, and to attend few lessons of one of the many information skills -courses. There was also a presentation on open science, and more specifically: what it means for the library. I also had the chance to sit in on a meeting with a new Celia customer, and to be at Joensuu Campus Library’s booth at the information market for the new students.

In October I got to know more about the library IT and publishing services. This meant many interesting presentations on, for example, the different systems and programs that are used by the library staff in their work. One of the perhaps most interesting of these presentations dealt with the history of library management systems especially here at Joensuu Campus Library. In addition to these presentations, I had some light duties themed around open learning. I also had the chance to visit both the Kuopio Campus Library and KUH Medical Library, as well as the legal deposit collection unit here in Joensuu. The visits were highly interesting, because the campus libraries have very different atmospheres. The legal deposit collection unit surprised me with its size, as whenever I thought that this has got to be all of it, we’d turn another corner and find more shelves with more materials on them. In November we talked about the administrative work that is done in the library, and how it is affected by the regulations set by the university itself. I also helped with the planning for the questionnaire regarding the Joensuu Campus Library group study rooms. Now, in December, I have mostly just continued with the now familiar work tasks, though there have been some learning moments here and there.

Throughout the whole internship I have, when my schedule has allowed it, accompanied the library staff at the customer service desk, and to my surprise I have liked the work at the customer service desk more than I dared to hope for. Duties regarding the library’s collections have also been strongly featured in my schedule during the whole autumn: I’ve made removals, received new books and magazines, made shelving stickers for books, shelved returns, bibliographically described the books in the library management system ALMA, packed books that were to be sent to The National Repository Library in Kuopio, and helped fix books that have taken damage while on loan. I have also had the chance to post interlibrary loans to other libraries, as well as to aid with the planning and construction of (most of) this autumn’s physical book exhibitions at the Joensuu Campus Library. In addition to all of this, I’ve also listened in on many, many different staff meetings for all types of smaller teams and workgroups.

The last five months have been highly interesting (and fascinating, exciting, intriguing, plus several other related words), and I do believe I’ve learned a lot. I do have a lot of thoughts about this past autumn and the internship, but it is surprisingly difficult to figure out how to put those thoughts into words. This past autumn, and with it my internship, have gone by faster than I expected and I cannot imagine how they could have possibly been any better. That this autumn has gone by so fast, is more than likely partially thanks to the all the staff here at the UEF Library. My internship likely wouldn’t have been half as good and interesting without the library staff, who have asked me to come with them to try out this or that work task, taken immediately to fulfilling the few wishes about the content of my internship that I’ve had, and generally been really nice and awesome to work with. It has also been fascinating to get to hear how the work in the library has changed quite drastically in a relatively short timeframe.

If I had had any doubts about whether working in a library is for me, those doubts would certainly be gone by now, but then again, I’ve never had any doubts about that.
