Harjoittelijana Joensuun kampuskirjastossa | Internship at the Joensuu Campus Library

Harjoittelujaksoni Itä-Suomen yliopiston Joensuun kampuskirjastossa alkaa lähestyä loppuaan. On siis aika kerrata tunnelmia viimeisen kolmen kuukauden ajalta ja miettiä, mitä kaikkea onkaan tullut opittua. Opiskelen informaatiotutkimusta Tampereen yliopistossa, joten harjoittelu tieteellisessä kirjastossa tukee opintojani mainiosti. Päädyin palamaan takaisin Itä-Suomeen entiseen kotikaupunkiin Joensuuhun harjoittelujakson ajaksi.
Heti harjoittelun aluksi sain käsiini harjoitteluohjelman, joka sisälsi kirjaston toimintaan perehtymistä viikoittaisten teemojen kautta. Olen päässyt tutustumaan esimerkiksi tietoaineistopalveluihin, asiakaspalveluun, opetus- ja tietopalveluihin, laatutyöhön, hallintoon, viestintään ja avoimeen tieteeseen. Harjoittelun aikana käsitykseni tieteellisen kirjaston työtehtävistä ja toiminnoista onkin laajentunut.
Viikoittaisten perehtymisten lisäksi minulla on ollut projektina vanhan kokoelman järjestäminen ja viivakooditus, puuttuvien gradujen lisääminen kaukopalvelun kokoelmaan ja ulkomaisten e-kirjojen sisällönkuvailu. Kirjaston salit ovat myös tulleet tutuiksi aamuisten hyllytysvuorojen ansiosta.
Harjoittelujakson aikana olen osallistunut kirjaston sisäisiin palavereihin ja koulutuksiin. Kiinnostavia olivat esimerkiksi Kirjastoverkkopäivät ja kirjaston avoimen tieteen koulutukset. Harjoittelujaksoni sisälsi myös vierailut Kuopion kampuskirjastoon ja KYSin tieteelliseen kirjastoon.
Harjoitteluni yhtenä teemana oli kestävä kehitys kirjastossa. Kirjastossa on esimerkiksi käytössä koko yliopistoa koskevat Green Office -periaatteet. Kestävän kehityksen teemaan liittyen pääsin kokoamaan ilmastonmuutosaiheisen kirjanäyttelyn yliopiston Ilmastoiltapäivänä.
Harjoittelujakson aikana olen voinut peilata hyvin informaatiotutkimuksen opinnoista saatua teoriatietoa käytännön työelämään. Joulukuun ehdin sulatella oppimaani ennen opintojen pariin palaamista ja gradun aloitusta. Kirjastourasta haaveilevalle informaatiotutkimuksen opiskelijalle harjoittelujakso UEFin kirjastossa oli mainio tilaisuus. Iso kiitos siis koko UEFin kirjaston porukalle!
Harjoittelija Joensuun kampuskirjastossa | Trainee at the Joensuu Campus Library
My internship at the Joensuu Campus Library of the University of Eastern Finland is drawing to a close. It is now time to look back on the past three months and reflect on everything I’ve learned. I study information studies at the Tampere University, and an internship at an academic library was an excellent fit for my studies. I decided to return to my former home town of Joensuu in Eastern Finland for the duration of the internship.
At the start of the internship I was given the internship programme, which contained weekly themes designed to familiarise me with the operation of the library. I have had the chance to learn more about collection services, customer service, training and information services, quality work, administration, communications and open science. During my internship, my concept of the tasks and operations within an academic library has been expanded.
In addition to my weekly familiarisation themes, I was tasked with organising and barcoding the old collection, adding missing master’s theses to the interlibrary loan collection and subject indexing foreign e-books. I have also become quite familiar with the library halls thanks to shelving books in the mornings.
During my internship, I participated in meetings and training sessions for library personnel. I found the Library Network Days and open science training, among other events, very interesting. My internship also included visits to the Campus Library in Kuopio and Kuopio University Hospital Medical Library.
One of the themes of my internship was sustainable development in the context of the library. The library adheres to Green Office principles, for example, which are employed by the entire university. In keeping with the sustainable development theme, I had the chance to create a climate-change-themed book exhibition for the university’s Climate Afternoon event.
The internship has provided me with an opportunity to apply information studies theory to practical working life. I will have the month of December to digest everything I have learned before returning to my studies and starting work on my master’s thesis. For an information studies student dreaming of working in the library field, the internship at the UEF Library has been an excellent opportunity.
