Haluatko saada tiedon heti, kun tutkimusaiheestasi ilmestyy uusi artikkeli?

Uutuusvahdin luominen EBSCOn tietokannoissa

Ebsco-tietokantoja ovat esim. kauppatieteiden Business Source Elite, hoitotieteen CINAHL, psykologian ja käyttäytymistieteiden PsycINFO, sosiaalitieteiden SocINDEX, kielitieteiden MLA, liikutatieteiden SPORTDiscus ja monialainen Academic Search Premier.

  1. Luo itsellesi tili ylälaidan linkistä Sign in
ja sitten kohdasta Don’t have an account? Create one now.
Täytä seuraavalla sivulla pyydetyt tiedot ja luo itsellesi käyttäjätunnus ja salasana.
Hyväksy: Yes. I consent to the collection of this personalized data, and I understand the processing of my personal data is covered under my institution’s contract with EBSCO.
  2. Kirjaudu sitten sisään luomillasi tunnuksilla.
Tee haku/haut. Istunnon aikaiset haut löydät search history -linkin alta.
  3. Valitse se haku, minkä haluat talteen ja mistä haluat uutuustiedotteet ja klikkaa Save search / alert.
  4. Tallenna aukeavaan ruutuun haulle nimi, mihin sähköpostiin (sähköposteihin) haluat viestin lähtevän, kuinka usein yms. Tallenna Save -> Your alert has been created -> Continue.
  5. Jatkossa luomasi uutuusvahti löytyy Ebsco-käyttöliittymän kuvakkeen Folders alta, kun olet kirjautuneena. (My Folder – Search alerts)

Elsevier

Elsevierin lehdet löydät UEF-Primon kautta (ScienceDirect (Elsevier)).
Kustantajan palvelussa toimii sama tunnus kuin SCOPUS-tietokannassa, joten jos olet jo tehnyt sen tietokantaa varten, pääset aloittamaan kaikkien ko. kustantajan lehtien, esimerkiksi Lancetin, uutuusvalvonnan ilman uuden tunnuksen luomista,

  1. Klikkaa (kirjautuneena) lehden sivulla omaa nimeäsi, jolloin avautuu pieni valikko, josta valitset My email alerts.
  2. Näet listan, jonka ensimmäisellä välilehdellä on otsikkona Journal alerts ja sen alla Table of Contents Alert.
  3. Rastita haluamasi lehdet ja valitse sarakkeesta Online First Alert Frequency, haluatko uutuusviestit päivittäin, viikoittain vai kuukausittain.
  4. Klikkaa lopuksi taulukon alapuolelta Save changes.
Ovid

Ovidin lehdet löydät UEF-Primon kautta (LWW Total Access Collection (Ovid)).

Would you like to be informed as soon as a new article about your research topic is published?

Many international databases offer the chance to create an account and save searches. Saving searches also saves time, as you can get back to them whenever and wherever. You can also create alerts for these saved searches, which will help you keep up-to-date with new publications. The system will perform the saved search automatically at regular intervals and will then send the new references it finds to the account’s email address. If you want to just log in to check what new articles have been found without receiving the emails, this is also possible.

Creating an alert in UEF-Primo

  1. Log in at the top right corner.
In order to log into UEF-Primo and save your favourites or alerts, you have to be registered as a library customer.
  2. Search by using the desired perimeters from the collection of your choice: books, international articles, electronic materials, all.
  3. Click the function Save your search above the list of results. After this, an acknowledgment that the search was saved to your favourites will be displayed at the top of the page. Click Allow email notifications.
You can do the same for the searches made during the same session through your search history.
  4. You can find your search history and saved searches through the ‘pin’ and ‘clock’ icons at the top, or in the dropdown menu shown behind your name.

Creating an alert in the Scopus database

You can access the Scopus database through UEF-Primo. How to create an account and set up alerts:

  1. To create an account, click the Create Account link at the top right corner.
  2. Start by entering your email address. Continue by entering the rest of your information (first name, surname, the password you want) and click Register.
  3. Perform a Search and, after receiving the search results, click Save under the search query to save the search.
  4. Save the search under a name of your choice.
  5. Set alert to get notifications of new publications. You can name the alert. Choose how often and on what weekdays you would like to receive the emails. Remember to click Set alert.
  6. In the future, you can find your searches and your alerts by clicking your initials at the top right corner of the search window, after you have signed in. You can view the new references, edit the search, remove it or make it inactive (= you will not receive any messages).

You can also get updates when a document gets cited. See How do I create and manage my Alerts?

Creating an alert in PubMed

Your personal account at PubMed is called MyNCBI.

  1. First, create an account for yourself = register.
  2. Perform a search for a topic you wish to find the most recent information on (e.g. COVID-19).
  3. Click Create alert below the search screen.
  4. Name your search and decide whether you want the receive a notification of the new references to your email or whether you will log in to see them when you have the time.
    • If you say Yes to the notification, choose how often and in which format you wish to receive the references. The new references will be sent to your email until you change this setting or remove the search.
    • If you select the option No, you can later log into your NCBI account whenever you wish, go to the section Saved Searches and click the number showing you the amount of references in the column What’s new. This will show you the references that the search you saved has been able to find since the last time you checked it.
  5. Click Save.

See a brief tutorial on how to get alerts for articles on a topic using PubMed.

You can also use MyNCBI to store your search results (Collections) and share your search results with others through the service.

Creating an alert in the EBSCO databases

Ebsco databases include the Business Source Elite of business studies, CINAHL of health sciences, PsycINFO of psychology and behavioural sciences,  SocINDEX of Social Sciences, MLA of linguistics, SPORTDiscus of sports medicine and the multidisciplinary Academic Search Premier.

and then click Don’t have an account? Create one now.
Enter the requested information on the next page and create a login and a password for yourself.
Accept: Yes. I consent to the collection of this personalized data, and I understand that the processing of my personal data is covered under my institution’s contract with EBSCO.
  2. Then sign in with the credentials you just created.
Perform your search/searches. You can find the searches performed during your current session by clicking the search history link.
  3. Choose the search you wish to save and be alerted of, and click Save search / alert.
  4. A screen will open. Enter the name of the search, the email address(es) to which the notification should be sent, how often it should be sent, etc. Save -> Your alert has been created -> Continue.
  5. In the future, you can find the alert under the Ebsco user interface’s Folders icon when you are signed in. (My Folder – Search alerts)

See Saving a Search as an Alert on Ebscohost.

In addition to searches (search terms and their combinations), you can set up an alert for a journal you wish to follow through the database. However, it is more convenient to order ToCs through each publisher’s pages. You can also save search results in your account.

Creating an alert in the ProQuest databases

ProQuest features several databases from different fields of science. You can search them all or make your search more discipline-specific by clicking the Databases link in the top bar.

  1. At the top right corner of the ProQuest page, click Create My Research Account.
  2. Fill in the Create an Account form and click Create Account. (You can also link your new account to your RefWorks account.)

  4. You will be taken to a page with the text Your email address has been verified and there will be a link Go to ProQuest.
  5. Perform your search.
  6. The top right corner above the list of results has a link: Save searches /alert -> Create alert.
You can also use this function through your search history. Actions -> Create alert.
  7. Name your alert and choose your settings, e.g. how often you want to receive the alert notifications. The alert is valid for a maximum of one year. Finally, click Create alert. You will receive a confirmation email.

You can also set up an alert for a certain journal/publication. Click Publications in the menu on top of the UI, and search for journals by name or by field (Publication subject). The scholarly journals filter is also useful here. By clicking the name of a journal, you will open a page that has the Create Alert link.

See My Research tip on ProQuest platform

Journals’ ToC services

You can also create journal- or publisher-specific alerts. In practice, this usually means a ToC service, where a journal issue’s table of contents is sent to the orderer’s inbox when it is published. Sometimes ordering it is simple, but sometimes it may require several steps. That is why database-specific alerts about a certain subject may be more convenient than creating several alerts for different publishers’ journals.

Elsevier

Elsevier journals are available through the UEF-Primo (ScienceDirect (Elsevier)).
The publisher’s service uses the same credentials as the SCOPUS database, so if you already have the database account, you can activate alerts for the publisher’s journals, e.g. Lancet, without creating a new account.

  1. When signed in, click our name on the journal’s site. A small menu will open; choose My email alerts.
  2. You can see a list and the header of the first tab is Journal alerts. Underneath this, you can find the Table of Contents Alert.
  3. Check the journals you want and go to the column Online First Alert Frequency to choose whether you want to receive the alert notifications daily, weekly or monthly.
  4. Finally, click Save changes underneath the table.
Ovid

Ovid journals are available through UEF-Primo (LWW Total Access Collection (Ovid)).

  1. Click My Account at the top right corner of the service.
  2. Then go to Don’t have an Account? and click Create Account.
  3. Fill in the requested information on the Create Personal Account page and click Create Account.
  4. You will receive an email with a link to confirm the creation of the account.
  5. Click the section Journals and find the journal you want.
  6. Click the link @eTOC at the top right corner and write your email address in the new window.
  7. A text Subscribed to [name of the journal] will appear.
  8. In the future, you will receive the tables of contents (ToCs) of the selected journal’s new issues into your email.
Sage

SAGE’s journals can be accessed via UEF-Primo (SAGE Premier).

  1. Click the section Sign in at the top right corner of the Sage journals portal.
  2. Then, click the text link New users can register here.
  3. Enter the requested information (email address, desired password, name, country, organisation, etc.) and accept the terms.
  4. You will receive an email: Email verification required to complete your registration. Click the link to confirm your registration.
  5. Find the journal you want. Stay Connected -> Email Alerts -> Create e-mail alert
or browse the journals by discipline (Browse -> discipline -> subject). You can select several journals at once -> Add Alerts.
  6. Choose New Content (unless you also want to receive other notifications).
  7. Choose how often you want to receive the alert notification (daily, weekly, monthly). Confirm by clicking Submit.
Springer

You can access Springer journals via UEF-Primo (SpringerLink).
