Muistan kuinka pienessä kiireisessä tohinassa järjestelimme Nellin avajaisia kirjastossa vuonna 2003. Mietimme mitä tarjoaisimme ja missä Nelliä esittelisimme asiakkaille. Kaunis pihlajanoksa tuotiin vaatimattomasti kukkamaljakkoon ”Pilttuuseen” ja tarjosimme pihlajanmarjakarkkeja. Kuten usein käy, paikalla piipahti vain muutama kiinnostunut asiakas, mutta näin Kuopion yliopiston kirjaston Nelli saatiin avattua ensimmäisten kirjastojen joukossa koko Suomessa, ellei jopa ihan ensimmäisenä.
Iso työ Nelliin oli saada tietokantaryhmät pikahakua varten. Piti päättää pikahakuryhmät ja valita niihin sopivat tietokannat. Piti tehdä ryhmät sekä yliopiston omalle väelle, että ulkopuolisille käyttäjille. Itse tietokannat ja e-lehdet piti lisätä Nelliin, mistä ei ainakaan itselle juuri muistikuvaa jäänyt, mutta tulihan ne lisättyä.
Tämän jälkeen alkoi koulutus. Nellin käyttöä opetettiinkin paljon opiskelijoiden tiedonhaun kursseilla useamman vuoden ajan.
Kun vuonna 2010 yhdistettiin Kuopion ja Joensuun yliopistot, piti myös Nellit saada yhteen. Siinäpä olikin sitten tekemistä kaikille kirjaston tietoasiantuntijoille, kun Kuopion ja Joensuun yliopistojen erilliset Nellit yhdistettiin Itä-Suomen yliopiston Nelliksi. Erityisen ongelmallista yhdistämisessä oli etäkäytön mahdollistaminen molempien yliopistojen käytössä olleille aineistoille.
Nyt on vuorossa sitten Nellistä luopumisen aika. Uudet tuulet puhaltavat. Tilalle on saatu UEF-Finna. Hiukan on haikea olo, kun sen kanssa on kuitenkin yli kymmenen vuotta tullut puuhattua. Maailma muuttuu – pitää pysyä muutoksessa mukana.

An Obituary for Nelli
I remember how we were in quite a hurry to arrange the official opening ceremony of the Nelli portal in our library back in 2003. We were considering what to serve and where to introduce Nelli to our customers. A beautiful rowan tree branch was modestly set in a small vase in our “Stall” and we offered some rowan berry marmalades. As is usually the case, not too many interested customers dropped by, but that was how we were among the first libraries in Finland to open up a portal such as Nelli; the University of Kuopio might have even been the very first one.
It was hard work to get all databases up and running for Nelli’s quick search. We had to decide all quick search groups and choose the databases fitting them. We needed to make groups for both the university folk and outside users. The databases themselves and e-journals had to be added in to the Nelli, and it is hard to remember how it was done, but nevertheless, it was done.
And thus our training started. How to use Nelli was a main subject of many information retrieval courses for university students for quite a many years.
When in the year 2010 the universities of Kuopio and Joensuu were united, we also needed to get our Nellis together. That truly needed the skills of all our information specialists, when the separate Nellis of Kuopio and Joensuu needed to be united as the University of Eastern Finland Nelli. One of the biggest challenges was make remote access possible for materials in the use of both universities.
Now it has come to let Nelli go. New winds are blowing. UEF Finna is now Nelli’s successor. The mood is rather plaintive, since we have been busying ourselves with Nelli for more than ten years. The world changes – we need to keep up with the pace.
