In autumn 2024, we will be organising a company tour across North Karelia, taking students to visit different companies. We aim to showcase the diverse and innovative companies that thrive in our region. This journey will bring together North Karelian companies and Finnish and international students from humanities and computer science.
Price? Visiting the companies is free of charge and we provide a free bus service to destinations outside Joensuu. Language? English (Finnish)

Companies outside Joensuu (day trips with free mini bus service)
When you sign up for a day trip, you commit to the full programme for the day (duration approx. 9:00-16:30): all the companies, travel time and breaks. The mini bus service pick-up/drop-off point is at the University of Eastern Finland parking lot (Joensuu, Yliopistokatu 2).

Porokylä Bakery: Bakery combining tradition and innovation: technology and digitalisation utilised in work. Lakeland Bomba: Tourism area in Nurmes. A cultural hub full of North Karelian charm.
Nature Line Cutlery: Ecological cutlery manufacturer operating in international markets. Valamo Monastery: Centre of Orthodox religious life and cultural activities.
Joensuu district multicultural association JoMoni ry: Promotes multiculturalism, fights against racism and looks after the interests of immigrants. They organise cultural events and provide opportunities for sports activities.
During the visit we will also hear about the RADUGA project of North Karelia Seta ry (website in Finnish). North Karelia Seta is a local LGBTQIA+ rights NGO.
VisitKarelia: VisitKarelia,the DMO (destination marketing organisation) of Business Joensuu oy, is responsible for the regional development and marketing of tourism in eastern Finland. The focus of the activities is on sustainable tourism, digitalization, data-driven management, and investments.
North Karelian Society for Social security: Their focus areas are supporting organisational activities, promoting people’s participation and opportunities for influence, and influencing social policy.

Instructions for ECTS and a digital badge:
You can earn 1 ECTS or a digital badge by participating in the visits and writing a report, or a blog post on the CUDIS website.
The company tour includes:
Day trips to companies outside Joensuu. Usually two companies/trip.
Short visits to companies in Joensuu (usually one company/day)
For the credit/digital badge you need to visit four (4) companies in the programme. For example, you could join 1 day trip and 2 Joensuu visits. However, feel free to join as many visits as you want!
Submit your report or blog text to the project staff via the DigiCampus platform (link). The deadline is 10.12.2024.
The report (3–5 pages) should include:
Company introduction: sector/industry, products/services etc.
Internationality in the company: How it manifests in operations, sales, communication etc.
Digital technologies in the company: How they manifest in operations, sales, communication etc.
Internships and job opportunities: What kind of opportunities are there?
Thesis topics: Does the company already have thesis topics available for students? What kind of topic could you offer to the company?
What kind of job opportunities are available to you in the company? If there are no suitable positions at the moment, what could they be?
What did you learn about companies operating in North Karelia?
You can choose to focus the report on one company in more depth or on all companies. On the cover page (not counted towards the page limit), include your name, student number, and the course you are seeking credit (1 ECTS) towards, along with the information of the teacher in charge of that course. Note: You must confirm in advance with the course teacher whether the texts are acceptable as a substitute for course credit. The project staff will review the texts and record the credits in the study register.
Blog text (approx. 2 pages)
As an alternative to the report, you can write a post for our blog (it will be published). The content of the blog post can follow the structure of the report, however, so that you focus on 1-2 companies in more detail or limit the perspective to, for example, their international operations.. The content of the blog post will be planned together with the project team. Welcome to the kick-off event of our North Karelia Future Skills Forum. This is a collaborative forum for identifying change in working and business life: skills anticipation, trends, and weak signals. Companies, trailblazers, experts, and others who are interested in developing working life, are welcome to join us!
An increasing number of employees use a foreign language daily at work. The varying levels of language proficiency require both employers and employees to adopt new practices for job orientation, instruction, and daily conversations. How are language technologies utilized in the workplace in these situations? How could language technologies better support interaction and language learning? Additionally, what new solutions and ideas are needed for different uses?

Attend two North Karelia Future Skills Forum events and write texts about them. Submit the texts to the project staff according to the agreed schedule via the DigiCampus platform (link published soon).
Assignments:
Write a total of four texts about two forum events, which you can optionally offer for publication on the CUDIS website/blog. From each event, write one shorter news-style article and one longer article.
A shorter news-style article or report-type summary, at least 300–400 words: basic information about the event, speakers, key contents, main messages, etc. Did you learn anything new?
A longer article that complements the news piece about the same event, at least 750–850 words: the article can be an interview or a perspective piece that focuses on a specific theme with an analytical approach. The article may include sources and personal reflections.
Both articles can include photos from the event (note: ensure photography permissions).”

Digital and international competence development service, March–May 2024
In North Karelian companies, support is needed for the digital and international leap. Expertise in computer science and language and culture fields is an important part of the change. Utilise your strengths and apply your skills in real-life work situations – Participate in the pilot of the Digital and international competence development service. You will gain direct connections to companies in the region and experience in multidisciplinary and multilingual teamwork.
For: 1) North Karelian enterprises, 2) master’s and postgraduate students of Humanities and Computing 3) Recently graduated jobseekers from these fields. Students in the final stages of their bachelor’s studies are also welcome.
ECTS and other attainments? You can earn 5 credits and/or an open badge by participating in the orientations and other events (19 hrs), doing a company interview, and creating a development plan (teamwork, 50-80 hrs). Humanities students can include the credits for example in Work Experience 1–10 ECTS studies/course and computing students can include the credits in Optional and minor subject studies. Discuss credit incorporation with the respective course instructors. Jobseekers must check the possible effects of participating in the training on unemployment benefits with the TE services.
Implementation of the development service
In the development service, companies’ current digital capabilities, ability to recruit and lead international talents and communicate with multilingual customers are assessed. After the assessment, teams create development plans for the companies.
Participation in the pilot requires attending orientations and committing to teamwork. After the orientation, the teams conduct interviews to assess digital and international readiness in companies. The interview questions are based on VTT’s DigiMaturity Tool and Business Finland’s Talent Boost Index. Based on the interview results, teams will craft individual development plans for companies.

Training: Digital and international competences of enterprises,February 2024
Working life training which focuses on improving digital and international competences and the operational environments of enterprises. Operational environments are prone to rapid change both locally and globally. Communication with employees is increasingly taking place in foreign languages. There are various new technologies on the market. Enterprises must be prepared to adjust to these changes.
The half of the training offers information on digital technologies used in enterprises and the opportunities of AI in internal communication and improving work performance. The second half focuses on the recruitment of international experts and communication in diverse work communities. The training includes expert-led lectures and case examples from the business field.

Do you want to enhance your employability during your studies? Have you recently graduated but need to upgrade your skills? Knowledge of the various forms of self-employment is a fundamental skill for professional jobs in any sector. For self-employed individuals, quality customer service and communication skills are essential. Fluency in multilingual and multicultural interaction is required when dealing with customers, whether the business is domestic or international. To succeed in this, you need to be familiar with the opportunities offered by digital technologies and be able to use them.
What? Working life training (19 hr) which focuses on the basics of customer-oriented self-employment. The training discusses different types of self-employment, entrepreneurial skills and starting your own business, and provides information on how new digital technologies and service design can support customer interaction. The training includes case examples from the business world and presentations from work life experts.
For: Master’s and postgraduate students in the humanities and computer science and recent job seekers in these fields. Students in the final stage of their Bachelor’s studies are also welcome.

ECTS? Students and recent graduates can attend individual training events and include them in their professional portfolios. By attending all events (19 hrs) and completing the mandatory assignments students can earn 3 ECTS credits.
