Balancing Academics and Family Life as a University Student in Joensuu, Finland

I am Reza, a Master’s degree student in Linguistics Data Sciences (LDS) at the University of Eastern Finland (UEF). In this blog, I share my experiences as a student at the University of Eastern Finland about balancing family life with academic responsibilities here in Joensuu. I’ll discuss the challenges and rewards of managing both worlds, along with tips and resources that can help us thrive as students and family members in this welcoming city.

The Value of Life-Study Balance

Keeping a healthy life-study balance is crucial. UEF understands this well and offers resources to help students manage their workload effectively. For instance, UEF’s Student Wellbeing Services provide guidance on managing stress, staying organized, and maintaining mental health, which is invaluable for students juggling multiple responsibilities. Finding ways to balance study with life outside of it—like taking study breaks at Joensuu’s beautiful parks or even a quick visit to the UEF Library’s calm reading spaces—can make a world of difference. Balance doesn’t just make you a better student; it also makes you a more present parent and partner.

Embrace and Explore: Discovering Joensuu’s Culture

Living in Joensuu means experiencing Finnish culture up close, and there are many ways to get involved. UEF and the city often host events where students and families can meet others, explore local traditions, and connect with the university community. From attending a UEF-hosted Finnish holiday celebration to joining local nature excursions, there are countless ways to make memories while deepening cultural understanding.

Engaging in these events can ease the adjustment for both students and their families. For instance, winter in Finland can be daunting at first, but activities like skating, skiing, and participating in local winter festivals can make the season exciting. Embracing the culture also allows families to build connections with locals, making Joensuu feel like home.

Coping with the Challenge of Adjustments

Adjusting to a new lifestyle or balancing family obligations with academic pressures can sometimes impact studies. UEF offers support to help students manage these adjustments, and their tips on setting up effective study habits and maintaining motivation are especially helpful when juggling family commitments. One effective technique is to create a consistent study schedule that works for the whole family, perhaps dedicating certain hours for study and others for family time. Having a designated “study zone” at home can also help everyone stay organized and mentally prepared.

The long, cold winters in Joensuu can seem daunting, but plenty of enjoyable activities are offered for families to embrace the season together. From ice skating and sledding to cross-country skiing and cozying up in warm cafes, there are countless ways to make wintertime memorable. Many local parks and trails remain open, offering opportunities to explore snowy landscapes, and community events, such as holiday markets and winter festivals, bring a festive atmosphere to the chilly months. These activities help families stay active, connect with the community, and make winter in Joensuu an exciting time.

Supporting Kids through Change

For students with children, it’s essential to support them through the transitions of a new environment. UEF’s Family-friendly Study Programs and Joensuu’s local resources can ease this adjustment. For instance, children may need time to adapt to the Finnish language or new school routines, and UEF’s Language Centre offers language learning resources that can be beneficial for both parents and children. Fun, language-learning apps or participating in local youth programs can also be a great help. Encouraging children to join local sports teams or attend afterschool activities helps them form friendships and feel more at home in their new environment.

In Joensuu, children have access to a variety of programs that help them engage with the local culture and integrate into the community. These programs offer activities ranging from sports and arts to language clubs and cultural workshops, allowing children to connect with their peers and gain a deeper understanding of Finnish traditions and values. Such programs not only provide a safe and enriching environment for kids but also play an essential role in fostering a sense of belonging and inclusivity for families from diverse backgrounds.
