UiB Piloting Learning Analytics in Statistics Course
The University of Bergen has piloted the use of learning analytics in its STAT110 Basic Course in Statistics through the ISILA project. This blended course offers first-year students with foundational probability theory and statistical analysis skills, fostering practical interpretation and application across nine interactive modules on the Canvas platform.
In the pilot, anonymized data from student interactions, quizzes, and self-regulated learning surveys were harnessed via custom dashboards to monitor engagement and progress. The visualizations uncovered key patterns, like correlations between formative assessments and mandatory assignments, highlighting how students leverage quizzes for deeper understanding.
Using these findings, the team is revamping the course: streamlining consent processes for broader data access, introducing student dashboards to promote self-reflection, and enhancing analytics with SRL-performance links and detailed quiz diagnostics. This initiative spotlights the promise of data-informed education while addressing privacy and applying more effective, inclusive statistics teaching in the future.
