About the project
FUTE project is a transformative international initiative that equips future educators with essential competencies to address sustainability challenges within educational systems. With a focus on integrating Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) into teacher preparation programs, FUTE fosters a holistic approach to sustainable practices across diverse teaching disciplines, empowering future teachers to champion sustainability in both local and global contexts.
Led by the University of Eastern Finland (UEF) and supported by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland through the Higher Education Partnership (HEP) Programme (2024–2026), FUTE brings together the University of Turku (UTU), Dar es Salaam University College of Education (DUCE), and the University of Namibia (UNAM). Each partner institution contributes distinct expertise: the University of Eastern Finland is renowned for its innovations in teacher education, the University of Turku provides strong foundations in sustainability science, and the African partners add invaluable perspectives on adapting ESD to local contexts and challenges. Collectively, these institutions aim to enhance teacher educators’ and student teachers’ capacities, fostering an evidence-based, contextually relevant, and globally connected approach to sustainable education
The project is implemented in three cycles:
1st cycle 2024-2025: Teacher educators’ capacity building through professional development training
2nd cycle 2025: Analysing and redesigning teacher education courses to ensure the integration of sustainable development aspects
3rd cycle 2025-2026: Practical application of learning outcomes in the real world through local mini projects
FUTE builds lasting institutional and professional networks that transcend national boundaries, creating a community of educators prepared to drive sustainable change in education systems worldwide.
