Selkie fire area studies in collaboration with Snowchange Cooperative
In summer of 2022 we started the field measurements in Selkie fire area (6 hectares of forest burned in Eastern Finland in summer of 2021). The area is owned by Snowchange Cooperative, and it will be allowed to develop under natural succession after the forest fire.
Intensive field measurements will take place to: assess the post-fire soil GHG (CO2 and CH4) exchange through growing season, status of soil properties (soil chemical and soil physical conditions), main biodiversity issues and links to surrounding control sites (protected forest sites and unburned economic/managed forest sites). The plan is also to link the Selkie natural fire site to the near-by Mellitsanpuro catchment – questions on carbon transfers (both DOC and DPyC).
