{"id":340,"date":"2017-05-19T09:44:44","date_gmt":"2017-05-19T09:44:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ueflibraryscifor.wordpress.com\/?page_id=340"},"modified":"2024-07-10T10:18:02","modified_gmt":"2024-07-10T07:18:02","slug":"phrase-searching","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uef.fi\/ueflibraryscienceforestry\/search-terms-for-queries\/phrase-searching\/","title":{"rendered":"Phrase searching"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A phrase is a group of two or more words that express a single idea or meaning, when written next to each other. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Phrase searching means searching a database for words together, in a precise order.<br><br>By the general rules, the way to search for <strong>terms next to each other is to enclose them in quotation marks:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><i><strong>&#8220;global warming&#8221; <\/strong><\/i><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><i><strong>&#8220;coastal marine fish&#8221;<\/strong><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The quotation mark in question is double quote &#8220;, not single quote &#8216; clicked twice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.uef.fi\/ueflibraryscienceforestry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/55\/2023\/09\/fisherman-239487_640.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2027\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.uef.fi\/ueflibraryscienceforestry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/55\/2023\/09\/fisherman-239487_640.jpg 640w, https:\/\/blogs.uef.fi\/ueflibraryscienceforestry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/55\/2023\/09\/fisherman-239487_640-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A phrase searching helps to screen out the cases, where the words occurring together is essential to the meaning of a search term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A good example is <strong>&#8220;forest management&#8221;<\/strong>: &#8216;a branch of forestry concerned with overall administrative, economic, legal, and social aspects, as well as scientific and technical aspects, such as silviculture, protection, and forest regulation&#8217; (definition from Wikipedia).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>&#8220;Interactions between windthrow, bark beetles and <strong>forest management<\/strong> in the Tatra national parks&#8221;<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The meaning of the phrase is lost, if the words don&#8217;t appear together:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>&#8220;<em>Divergent trends in ecosystem services under different climate-<strong>management<\/strong> futures in a fire-prone <strong>forest<\/strong> landscape<\/em>&#8220;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>So a phrase searching is a very useful but also a restricting search tool. Notice that two words without truncation marks are the same as AND-command between the words<\/em>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Using a phrase is sometimes a good way to get rid of irrelevant results. But it is good to be aware, that it might leave also something useful out from the result.
