The links to these discipline-specific databases are shown at the end of this page and on the subpages of this module.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<div id=\"accordion-block_bd81f2444d4e9f32dd17765e0d2c02ba\" class=\"accordions\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"accordion accordion-js\">\n\t\t\t\t<button class=\"accordion__button\" aria-controls=\"content-4787\" aria-expanded=\"false\" id=\"accordion-control-4787\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"accordion__heading\" >\n\t\t\t\t\t\tBasic search elements of a database\t\t\t\t\t<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t<\/button>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"accordion__content\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-control-4787\" aria-hidden=\"true\" id=\"content-4787\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>Despite the varying interfaces of the databases, they all share some basic elements:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"has-background\">\n<li>the search is based on the <strong>Boolean operators AND, OR, NOT<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>AND and NOT are executed before OR regardless of the order in which you type the operations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>proximity operators<\/strong> for connecting terms in close distance\n<ul>\n<li>number (n) of words between given terms can be defined<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>phrase searching<\/strong> with quotation marks \u201d\u00a0 \u201c<\/li>\n<li><strong>truncation<\/strong> of terms with *\n<ul>\n<li>truncation is possible at least at the end of a word, quite often also in the middle and\/or in the beginning of the word<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>wildcards<\/strong> replacing one or one\/zero character in a term<\/li>\n<li><strong>punctuation<\/strong>: commas, hyphens, etc., are ignored<\/li>\n<li><strong>stemming, spelling variations and automatic equivalent terms <\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>singular and plural forms, as well as adjectives, will be found if you type any of the variants<\/li>\n<li>spelling variations of terms (color \u2013 colour) and symbols (\u03c9 \u2013 omega) will be found automatically<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>terms can be addressed to certain <strong>search fields <\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>combination of Title, Abstract and Keywords\/Subjects is a good starting point<\/li>\n<li>\u2018Title\u2019 alone might be too restrictive, but it may be used to focus on the most relevant results<\/li>\n<li>\u2018All text\u2019: the results may lose some relevancy, but it may be used if the number of results is too few otherwise<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>the use of <strong>limiters\/refining <\/strong>helps to improve the result for existing needs<\/li>\n<li>the queries and results can be <strong>saved, printed and exported<\/strong> to other programs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The module 1 describes these basic search technique issues in more detail. These are shown in the sub-chapters.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"accordion accordion-js\">\n\t\t\t\t<button class=\"accordion__button\" aria-controls=\"content-2808\" aria-expanded=\"false\" id=\"accordion-control-2808\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"accordion__heading\" >\n\t\t\t\t\t\tImportance of keywords and subject indexing\t\t\t\t\t<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t<\/button>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"accordion__content\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-control-2808\" aria-hidden=\"true\" id=\"content-2808\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>A subject term is a standardized word or phrase that describes a main idea in the article or in the book. Standardization means that the term is included in a controlled vocabulary called thesaurus. Thesaurus is list of terms used for a certain concept.<\/p>\n<p>A standardized subject term is important in searching for two reasons:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a subject term represents issues that are of primary importance to the content of the publication in its entirety<\/li>\n<li>a single term covers several alternative expressions and forms for one concept<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This picture is an example of a subject term within a thesaurus:<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7683\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.uef.fi\/ueflibrarypostgrad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/33\/2022\/04\/MOD2_yso.png\" alt=\"Screen capture of YSO search result. YSO is trilingual.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The actual subject term, <em>community art<\/em> (preferred term) also covers the idea or expression of <em>social art (<\/em>entry term).<\/p>\n<p>The thesaurus also expresses a broader (or a narrower) context to a concept.<\/p>\n<p>Related concepts don\u2019t hold the exact same idea as the original terms, but they serve as hints to other possible themes around the subject.<\/p>\n<p>Not every discipline\/database has a controlled vocabulary or thesaurus. Some databases only use the author\u2019s own keywords (the words that author used to describe the article). Uncontrolled keywords and their forms vary from author to another, and therefore all the possible expressions must be included in the query. Nevertheless, a keyword tells something essential about the content.<\/p>\n<p>The information about the thesaurus used within each database is attached to the details of the databases on the sub-chapters of this module.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"accordion accordion-js\">\n\t\t\t\t<button class=\"accordion__button\" aria-controls=\"content-6999\" aria-expanded=\"false\" id=\"accordion-control-6999\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"accordion__heading\" >\n\t\t\t\t\t\tSearch tools for tracking other interesting articles\t\t\t\t\t<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t<\/button>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"accordion__content\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-control-6999\" aria-hidden=\"true\" id=\"content-6999\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>Once you get hold of an interesting article, the databases offer assistance in tracing other relevant publications related to that document.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6902\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.uef.fi\/ueflibrarypostgrad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/33\/2022\/03\/MOD2_tools_citations.png\" alt=\"A screen capture of a data record of a publication is shown. These might be interesting for you, too.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related articles<\/strong><br \/>\nMany databases automatically generate related results based on the information of the article on hand. These might be expressed as: \u201crelated documents\u201d, \u201crelated items\u201d, \u201cyou may also like\u201d, \u201cfind similar results\u201d, \u201csimilar articles\u201d etc.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Citations<\/strong><br \/>\nSome databases offer the possibility of tracking the articles that have used the current article as a reference. Expressions like \u201ccited by\u201d or \u201ccitations\u201d refer to this functionality.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Keywords<\/strong><br \/>\nIndexed keywords and subject terms can give you an idea of additional effective search terms. Sometimes these terms are ready-made links, so you can easily perform a new search.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"accordion accordion-js\">\n\t\t\t\t<button class=\"accordion__button\" aria-controls=\"content-214\" aria-expanded=\"false\" id=\"accordion-control-214\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"accordion__heading\" >\n\t\t\t\t\t\tFilters and limiting\t\t\t\t\t<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t<\/button>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"accordion__content\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-control-214\" aria-hidden=\"true\" id=\"content-214\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>Databases offer some predefined filters that help limiting the result according to certain characteristics, like time or document type.
