Open science means opening of research publications, data and methods. Open access refers to a form of online publishing in which a scientific publication is openly accessible and utilisable for everyone, without separate compensation. UEF, like many other universities and funders around the world, demands research results to be published with an open access (OA) within the limits of agreements and laws.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Open access of publications can be achieved via three routes:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Gold open access<\/li>\n<li>Green open access<\/li>\n<li>Hybrid publishing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Explore these <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uef.fi\/en\/web\/open-uef\/avoimen-julkaisemisen-vaihtoehdot\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">open access publishing options.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Watch the\u00a0videos about open access publishing:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1GTA3YxI2_E\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">An Introduction to Open Access publishing <\/a>(1:54)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=stPntPhqWgY\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gold and Green Open Access Publishing\u00a0<\/a>(1:19) (Note! Use publication repositories instead.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Open Access articles can be searched via various services, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www3.uef.fi\/en\/web\/open-uef\/julkaisuarkistoja-ja-open-access-lehtihakemistoja\">publication archives and\u00a0 open access journal directories<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Read <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uef.fi\/ueflibrary\/preprintit-julki-missa-ja-miksi-preprint-archives-what-and-why\/\">UEF Library&#8217;s blog post about pre-print archives.<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Sherpa\/Romeo<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/v2.sherpa.ac.uk\/romeo\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SHERPA\/RoMEO <\/a>is a service for showing the copyright and open access self-archiving policies of academic journals. The database uses a colour-coding scheme to classify publishers according to their self-archiving policy. RoMEO contains publishers&#8217; general policies on self-archiving of journal articles and certain conference series.\u00a0The service\u00a0provides a summary of the publisher&#8217;s policy, including what version of an article can be deposited, where it can be deposited, and any conditions that are attached to that deposit. RoMEO&#8217;s database covers over 22 000 journals.<\/p>\n<h2>APC benefits for UEF researchers<\/h2>\n<p>Scientific journals usually charge an Article\/Author Processing Charge (APC) from the author of an article to cover the costs of open access publishing. UEF researchers can have discount on APCs of several publishers.
