Vakiintunut matematiikan, fysiikan ja l\u00e4hialojen <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">arXiv<\/a> tosin aloitti jo vuonna 1991. Terveystieteiden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medrxiv.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MedRxiv<\/a> taas taitaa olla uusimpia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Preprinttien julkaiseminen on yksi avoimen julkaisemisen muodoista. Esimerkiksi <a href=\"https:\/\/connect.medrxiv.org\/relate\/content\/181\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">COVID-19-pandemia<\/a> on tilanne, jossa tutkimustuloksia jaetaan avoimesti ja niihin toivotaan pikaisia kommentteja, kun tutkijat kaikkialla maailmassa pyrkiv\u00e4t ratkomaan virukseen ja sen aiheuttamaan tautiin liittyvi\u00e4 haasteita.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Preprint-arkistojen k\u00e4ytt\u00f6 ei kuitenkaan rajoitu vain kriisitilanteisiin, vaan kyse on yksinkertaisesti online-julkaisuarkistoista, joihin voi l\u00e4hett\u00e4\u00e4 tieteellisi\u00e4 julkaisuja, joita ei viel\u00e4 ole vertaisarvioitu perinteisiss\u00e4 akateemisissa lehdiss\u00e4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Artikkelit seulotaan ja tarkistetaan mm. plagioinnin varalta. Preprint voi olla esimerkiksi konferenssiesitelm\u00e4, sill\u00e4 joillain aloilla julkaisun nopeus on oleellisinta ja preprint-arkiston osoitteella niihin voi viitata. Monien tutkijoiden mielest\u00e4 perinteinen vertaisarviointiprosessi kest\u00e4\u00e4 liian kauan ja viiv\u00e4stytt\u00e4\u00e4 t\u00e4rkeiden tutkimustulosten levitt\u00e4mist\u00e4. Altmetriikan avulla seurataan, mist\u00e4 juuri nyt puhutaan ja kirjoitetaan, jolloin nopeus on etu. Preprint voi tuoda julkaisulle enemm\u00e4n lukijoita ja viittauksia julkaisulle. Preprint-julkaisemisen etuihin kuuluvat siis ainakin varhainen palaute ja tutkimuksen lis\u00e4\u00e4ntyv\u00e4 n\u00e4kyvyys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rahoittajista esimerkiksi <bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">US National Institutes of Health<\/bdo> ja <bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Wellcome Trust<\/bdo> hyv\u00e4ksyv\u00e4t preprintit apurahahakemuksissa, mutta Opetus- ja kulttuuriministeri\u00f6n (OKM) linjauksen mukaan vertaisarvioimattomia k\u00e4sikirjoituksia ei raportointivaiheessa lueta avoimiksi julkaisuiksi eli OKM edellytt\u00e4\u00e4 julkaisun olevan vertaisarvioitu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"932\" height=\"668\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.uef.fi\/ueflibrary\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2020\/04\/Preprint.jpg\" alt=\"Sana preprint kuvan keskell\u00e4. However, the well-established <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/\">arXiv<\/a> of mathematics, physics and other related fields has been operating since 1991. In contrast, the health sciences\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medrxiv.org\">MedRxiv<\/a> is one of the newest ones.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Preprints are a form of open access publishing. For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/connect.medrxiv.org\/relate\/content\/181\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the COVID-19 pandemic<\/a> has prompted scientists to openly share their findings, hoping for quick comments, as researchers around the globe are trying to solve the problems connected to the virus and the disease it causes.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">But the use of preprint repositories is not limited to just crisis situations. Instead, they are online publishing archives where scientific publications can be submitted before they have been peer-reviewed in traditional academic journals.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The articles are screened and checked for plagiarism, among other things. A preprint can be a conference presentation, for example, since in some fields swift publication is key and a preprint archive address allows the citation of these articles. Preprints can be commented on, and many believe they are a great way of sharing and receiving feedback on work still in progress.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Popular preprint repositories include:<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">arXiv<\/a> \u2013 mathematics, physics, computer science, etc.<\/bdo><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biorxiv.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BioRxiv<\/a> \u2013 biology<\/bdo><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/chemrxiv.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ChemRxiv<\/a> \u2013 chemistry<\/bdo><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/figshare.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Figshare<\/a> \u2013 a multi-field archive that also contains other material, such as presentations, research data and posters<\/bdo><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medrxiv.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MedRxiv<\/a> \u2013 medicine and health sciences<\/bdo><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/osf.io\/preprints\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">OSF Preprints<\/a> \u2013 a multi-field portal that gathers preprint archives from different fields<\/bdo><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/psyarxiv.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PsyArXiv<\/a> \u2013 psychology<\/bdo><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/peerj.com\/archives-preprints\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PeerJ Preprints<\/a> \u2013 biology, medicine, computer science, chemistry, etc.<\/bdo><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"http:\/\/repec.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RePEc<\/a> \u2013 economics and managerial economics<\/bdo><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/osf.io\/preprints\/socarxiv\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SocArXiv<\/a> \u2013 social sciences<\/bdo><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/zenodo.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zenodo<\/a> \u2013 a multi-field archive that also contains other material, such as research data<\/bdo><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Preprints are a fast-growing part of scientific communications. Many researchers believe that the traditional peer review process is too time-consuming and delays the distribution of important research findings. Altmetrics help users keep track of what is currently being discussed and written about, making speed an asset. Preprints can also attract more readers and citations, and early feedback and increased visibility are among the benefits of this publication form.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Funders including the National Institutes of Health in the US and the Wellcome Trust in the UK accept preprints in grant applications.
