T\u00e4m\u00e4n kertaisten Kirjastoverkkop\u00e4ivien<\/a> alkupalaksi Monica Crump<\/strong> Irlannin kansalliskirjastosta esitti innostavan puheenvuoron kirjastojen tulevaisuudesta<\/a>. H\u00e4n n\u00e4ki, ett\u00e4 kirjastotieteen yhden ”is\u00e4n” S. R. Ranganathan<\/strong>in\u00a0lait<\/a> eli kirjastotieteen peruspilarit p\u00e4tev\u00e4t edelleen. Annifista on t\u00e4ll\u00e4 hetkell\u00e4 k\u00e4yt\u00f6ss\u00e4 jo sen toinen versio, joka toimii huomattavasti paremmin kuin proto-versio. Iltap\u00e4iv\u00e4n rinnakkaisohjelmista kiinnosti tietysti erityisesti Almaan liittyv\u00e4t integraatiot koska Alma otetaan k\u00e4ytt\u00f6\u00f6n my\u00f6s It\u00e4-Suomen yliopiston kirjastossa t\u00e4m\u00e4n vuoden vaihteessa. Finnan kohdalla integraation<\/a> tilanne 21.10.2019: kaikki kunnossa. Melindan Alma-integraatiota<\/a> ty\u00f6stet\u00e4\u00e4n parhaillaan. Tiedet\u00e4\u00e4n, ett\u00e4 Asterin toimija-auktoriteetit ovat k\u00e4ytett\u00e4viss\u00e4 Alma-kuvailussa. My\u00f6s Finton<\/a> sanastoista YSO, YSO-paikat ja SLM ovat k\u00e4ytett\u00e4viss\u00e4 Almassa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ensimm\u00e4isen p\u00e4iv\u00e4n iltap\u00e4iv\u00e4n p\u00e4\u00e4tti paneelikeskustelu<\/a>, jossa aiheena oli Kirjastojen matka vuodesta 2020 vuoteen 2030. Panelistien mielenkiintoisessa keskustelussa puhuttiin mm. mit\u00e4 asioita ottaisi ja mit\u00e4 ei mukaan t\u00e4st\u00e4 ajasta vuoteen 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Korkeakoulukirjastojen tulevaisuuden tilastointitarpeet-ty\u00f6pajassa<\/a> keskusteltiin monipuolisesti tulevaisuuden tilastointitarpeista, sill\u00e4 nykymuotoinen tilastointi p\u00e4\u00e4ttyy vuoteen 2020. Tilastointia tarvitaan my\u00f6s sen j\u00e4lkeen, joten yhteinen tavoite on luoda \u201dTulevaisuuden tilasto\u201d, KITT2030. Ty\u00f6pajassa keskusteltiin yleens\u00e4, mit\u00e4 tilastoja tarvitaan? Mik\u00e4 on \u201dpakko\u201d ja mik\u00e4 on \u201dsuotavaa\u201d tilastoida. Tilastokeskuksen ja OKM:n tarvitsemien kansallisen tason tilastotietojen lis\u00e4ksi kirjastot tarvitsevat itse tietoa vuosikertomukseen ja toiminnan suunnitteluun. Nyky\u00e4\u00e4n KITT2:een<\/a> ker\u00e4t\u00e4\u00e4n yli 600 lukua, joista tilastokeskukselle menee reilu 100 ja OKM:lle pari lukua. Yhten\u00e4 ongelmana on ollut se, ett\u00e4 juuri mit\u00e4\u00e4n lukua ei ole karsittu vuosien saatossa pois. Tiedot kokoelmista, lainauksesta ja rahoituksesta muodostavat kirjastotilastojen ytimen, mutta on my\u00f6s uudenlaisia tilastointitarpeita, miten saada esim. asiakaskokemus mukaan tilastoihin? T\u00e4t\u00e4 varten voidaan kehitt\u00e4\u00e4 ty\u00f6pajan vet\u00e4j\u00e4n, Markku Laitisen<\/strong> mukaan uudenlaisia tulevaisuuden indikaattoreita, \u201dyhdistelm\u00e4indeksej\u00e4\u201d, jotka voisivat koostua useammasta kuin yhdest\u00e4 osaindikaattorista.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tilastolukujen saaminen on kirjastoissa vuosittainen iso ponnistus. Siirtymiset uusiin kirjastoj\u00e4rjestelmiin kuten KOHAan ja Almaan vaativat tietokantojen rakenteisiin tutustumista my\u00f6s tilastoinnin n\u00e4k\u00f6kulmasta. Ty\u00f6pajan alussa Anneli \u00d6sterman<\/strong> esitteli meille KOHA-j\u00e4rjestelm\u00e4n tilastointia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Automaattinen kuvailu: Aaveita koneessa -ty\u00f6pajassa<\/a> p\u00e4\u00e4siv\u00e4t osallistujat arvioimaan aineistoihin liittyvi\u00e4 asiasanoja, joita oli tuotettu Annifilla ja\/tai ihmisen voimin. Kuten ensimm\u00e4isess\u00e4 Annifin ja ihmisen kohtaamisessa my\u00f6s t\u00e4ss\u00e4 toisessa kohtaamisessa ihmisen tuottama sis\u00e4ll\u00f6nkuvailu oli laadukkaampaa. Tosin Annif on kehittynyt niin, ett\u00e4 sen k\u00e4ytt\u00f6\u00e4 sis\u00e4ll\u00f6nkuvailun apuv\u00e4lineen\u00e4 voi jo harkita vakavasti.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Melindan tutut konstit ja uudet metkut -ty\u00f6pajassa<\/a> oli esill\u00e4 mm. Melindassa k\u00e4ytett\u00e4viss\u00e4 olevat ty\u00f6kalut: Merge<\/a>, Muuntaja<\/a> ja Cyrillux<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kirjastoverkkop\u00e4iv\u00e4t olivat onnistuneet. Mukana kotiin tuli uusia asioita hy\u00f6dynnett\u00e4v\u00e4ksi omassa ty\u00f6ss\u00e4. Mieleen j\u00e4iv\u00e4t isot muutokset, joiden keskell\u00e4 olemme nyt – julkaisujen saattaminen avoimiksi, teko\u00e4lyn tuomat mahdollisuudet, uudet kirjastoj\u00e4rjestelm\u00e4t ja uudistuvat tilastot. Monenlaisia paloja n\u00e4iden lis\u00e4ksi ehtii viel\u00e4 tulla matkalla kohti vuotta 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year, the biennial Library Network Days (Kirjastoverkkop\u00e4iv\u00e4t<\/a> in Finnish) organised by the National Library of Finland<\/u><\/a> drew more than 500 library professionals. The 2019 Library Network Days kicked off with an inspiring talk about the future of libraries<\/a> by Monica Crump<\/strong> from the National Library of Ireland. She posited that the Five Laws of Library Science<\/a> put forward by S. R. Ranganathan<\/strong>,\u00a0one of the fathers of library science, hold true to this day. However, instead of the book as the traditional library collection item, she spoke more broadly of all types of content to which Ranganathan\u2019s laws can be applied.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Crump advocates genuine open publication wherein libraries would not need to pay extra charges for publishing scientific articles openly, and she finds that researchers should not be burdened with additional tasks and hurdles related to the open publication of their articles \u2013 \u201csave the time of the reader\/author.\u201d Her advice to customer service staff at libraries was particularly memorable: \u201cBe a friendly, supportive face in the anonymity of the digital world.\u201d She also quoted a section from IFLA\u2019s Global Vision report<\/a> on retaining content for future readers, stating that \u201cwe are the guardians of the memory of the world.\u201d<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nuggets of information from parallel sessions and workshops<\/bdo><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Day 1<\/bdo><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The portion on artificial intelligence and the automatic description of materials shed light on the partnership between CSC, the National Library of Finland and the National Archives of Finland to utilise artificial intelligence. The data generated by the project will be published openly.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other half of the portion presented the future prospects of the Annif<\/a>, tool for automated subject indexing and classification, and how it is used for indexing of master\u2019s theses at the University of Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4. The second version of Annif, which is vastly improved over the proto version, is already in use. In the future, the Annif tool will also be used for new doctoral dissertations, alongside master\u2019s theses. According to Osma Suominen<\/strong>, the functionalities of Annif will be further improved in the future, and a production-oriented interface will be created based on it and implemented in the National Library\u2019s systems. The solution\u2019s international user community will also be expanded.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As for the parallel programmes in the afternoon, the integrations related to Alma were naturally a draw, since the system will also be introduced at the library of the University of Eastern Finland at the turn of the year. Integration status for Finna on 21st October 2019: everything is in order. Melinda\u2019s Alma integration is currently under way. It is known that the Asteri operator authorities are available in the Alma descriptions. Of the Finto<\/a> vocabularies, YSO, YSO Places and SLM are also available through Alma.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first afternoon concluded with a panel discussion on the path of libraries from 2020 to 2030. The fascinating discussion covered many topics, including what the panellists would take with them from today to the year 2030 and what they would leave behind.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day 2<\/bdo><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The workshop on future needs to collect statistics at the libraries of institutes of higher education entailed a diverse discussion on statistical needs in the coming years, as the current model for collecting statistics will be retired in 2020. The need for statistics will obviously not suddenly cease after that, which is why the common goal is to create a \u201cstatistical system of the future\u201d \u2013 KITT2030. The workshop participants discussed what types of statistics are actually needed on a general level. What kinds of statistics \u201cneed\u201d to and \u201cshould\u201d be collected. In addition to the nationwide statistics required by Statistics Finland and the Ministry of Education and Culture, the libraries themselves need information for their annual reports and operational planning. At the moment, more than 600 pieces of data are being collected into KITT2<\/a>, of which more than 100 are relayed to Statistics Finland and a few to the Ministry of Education and Culture. One of the problems has been that very few figures have been trimmed out over the years. Information regarding collections, loans and funding form the core of library statistics, but there are also new kinds of statistical needs, such as how to represent the customer experience in statistical form. According to Markku Laitinen<\/strong> who helmed the workshop, new kinds of indicators \u2013 \u201ccompound indices\u201d \u2013 consisting of multiple part indicators could be developed for the purpose.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The annual compilation of statistics is a considerable effort at libraries each year. Transitions to new library systems, such as KOHA and Alma, require the database structures to be examined from a statistical perspective. At the beginning of the workshop, Anneli \u00d6sterman<\/strong> introduced us to the compilation of statistics in the KOHA system.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Automated metadata: In the \u201cGhosts in the Machine\u201d workshop<\/a>, participants got to evaluate content-related keywords that had been generated through Annif and\/or staff effort. As was the case the first time Annif and library employees were pitted against each other, the quality of the metadata created by actual people was higher. However, Annif has developed enough that its use as a tool to support automated indexing and classification can be considered in earnest.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u201cMelinda\u2019s familiar traits and new quirks\u201d workshop<\/a> presented the tools available in Melinda, such as Merge<\/a>, Convert<\/a> and Cyrillux<\/a>.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Library Network Days were a success. The participants took home new lessons and ideas to utilise in their own work. Among the notable topics were the massive changes we are currently tackling: open publication, the opportunities provided by artificial intelligence, new library systems and updated statistics. That being said, many additional pieces will be added to the puzzle on our way to 2030.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n
