It\u00e4-Suomen yliopiston kirjasto tarjoaa tutkimusaineistojen hallintaan tietoa ja tukea koulutuksissa sek\u00e4 aineistonhallintasuunnitelmien (DMP) kommentointipalveluna. Kirjaston tutkimuksen tuen data-asiantuntijat kommentoivat pyynn\u00f6st\u00e4 tutkimusta varten tehtyj\u00e4 aineistonhallintasuunnitelmia. Tukipalvelu toimii palveluosoitteen opendata[at]uef kautta. Palvelu on keskitetty erityisesti tukemaan rahoitusta hakevia tutkijoita, mutta palvelee kaikkia aineistonhallintaa suunnittelevia tutkijoita. Vuoden suurin kommentointiurakka oli syyskuussa Suomen Akatemian hakujen yhteydess\u00e4, t\u00e4ss\u00e4 yhteenvetoa kokemuksista ja tutkijoilta ker\u00e4tyst\u00e4 palautteesta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kommentoitavia suunnitelmia tuli l\u00e4hes kaksinkertainen m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4 edellisen vuoden syksyyn verrattuna. Silti vasta osa Suomen Akatemialta rahoitusta hakevista hy\u00f6dynt\u00e4\u00e4 kommentointipalvelua. Lis\u00e4tiedotusta palvelusta tarvitaan varmasti viel\u00e4. Tutkijat l\u00e4hettiv\u00e4t kommentointipyynn\u00f6t ajoissa, ensimm\u00e4iset kommentoitavat aineistonhallintasuunnitelmat tulivat jo elokuun puoliv\u00e4liss\u00e4, mik\u00e4 oli eritt\u00e4in hyv\u00e4; palvelu ei ruuhkautunut ja pystyimme vastaamaan nopeasti kysymyksiin. T\u00e4n\u00e4 syksyn\u00e4 kirjastossa aineistonhallintasuunnitelmia kommentoitiin kahden henkil\u00f6n voimin, muun ty\u00f6n ohessa. Palvelua toteuttava porukka voi vaihdella ty\u00f6tilanteesta ja resurssista riippuen, joten siksi on t\u00e4rke\u00e4\u00e4 k\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 kommentointipyynt\u00f6ihin ja kysymyksiin palveluosoitetta, etteiv\u00e4t viestit j\u00e4\u00e4 kenenk\u00e4\u00e4n henkil\u00f6kohtaiseen s\u00e4hk\u00f6postiin, vaan ne tavoittavat oikeat henkil\u00f6t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DMP tuki- ja kommentointity\u00f6 on todella mielenkiintoista, aina tulee uutta opittavaa eteen. T\u00e4n\u00e4kin syksyn\u00e4 saimme pohtia esimerkiksi geenidatan, luun\u00e4ytteiden, haastattelujen, historiallisten tekstien ja MRI-datan hallintaa. Tieteenalojen ja eri tyyppisten tutkimusaineistojen kirjo on valtava, ja me voimme tietenkin antaa tukea vain yleisell\u00e4 tasolla aineistonhallintaan, vaikka parhaamme mukaan huomioimmekin aina kyseisen aineiston erityisvaatimukset. Kommentoimme esimerkiksi sit\u00e4, onko suunnitelmassa vastattu kaikkiin olennaisiin kysymyksiin datanhallinnasta, muistutamme tarvittaessa esimerkiksi siit\u00e4, ett\u00e4 data tai v\u00e4hint\u00e4\u00e4n metadata eli kuvaileva tieto tutkimusaineistosta tulee avata (edellytys ainakin Suomen Akatemian hauissa), autamme ymm\u00e4rt\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n mit\u00e4 metadata on, miksi on t\u00e4rke\u00e4\u00e4 dokumentoida dataa ja muistutamme siit\u00e4, ett\u00e4 datan varmuuskopioinnista tulee huolehtia. N\u00e4m\u00e4 ovat t\u00e4rkeit\u00e4 ennen kaikkea tutkijan ty\u00f6n sujuvuuden takia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ker\u00e4simme kirjaston DMP kommentointipalvelusta palautetta syksyn rahoitushaun p\u00e4\u00e4tytty\u00e4. Palautekyselyn perusteella palvelun k\u00e4ytt\u00e4j\u00e4t olivat hyvin tyytyv\u00e4isi\u00e4 palveluun; palvelu sai keskiarvosanaksi 4,6 (asteikko 5 paras – 1 huonoin).  Vastaajat kokivat saaneensa varmuutta oman aineistonhallintasuunnitelman suhteen, sek\u00e4 uutta tietoa tai n\u00e4k\u00f6kulmia aineistonhallintaan. Suunnitelmaan laitettavia valmiita tekstej\u00e4 toivottiin, mutta niit\u00e4 on mahdotonta kenenk\u00e4\u00e4n muun kuin aineistonsa tuntevan tutkijan kirjoittaa. Sen sijaan tutkijaa aineistonhallinnan suunnittelussa tukevia ohjeita ja materiaalia kehitet\u00e4\u00e4n edelleen saadun palautteen perusteella.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aineistonhallintasuunnitelmien yhteydess\u00e4 kannattaa huomioida, ett\u00e4 siin\u00e4 vaiheessa, kun rahoitushaku on k\u00e4ynniss\u00e4, aika on rajallinen ja tutkijalla on paljon muutakin valmisteltavaa. Eli aineistonhallintaan kannattaa kouluttautua etuk\u00e4teen, ja niit\u00e4 oppeja voi hy\u00f6dynt\u00e4\u00e4 sitten kun oman suunnitelman kirjoittaminen on ajankohtaista. Kirjaston tutkimuksen tuen verkkosivuilta<\/a> l\u00f6ytyy tietoa aineistonhallintaan. Kirjasto toteuttaa yhteisty\u00f6ss\u00e4 tietotekniikkapalvelun kanssa kev\u00e4isin ja syksyisin aineistonhallintaan koulutuksia ja ty\u00f6pajoja, joissa tarjotaan perustietoa ja tuetaan rahoitusta hakevia tutkijoita oman suunnitelman tekemisess\u00e4. My\u00f6s jatko-opiskelijat ja muut aiheesta kiinnostuneet ovat tervetulleita koulutuksiin ja ty\u00f6pajoihin. Jatko-opiskelijoille tarjoamme datanhallinnan opetusta<\/a> my\u00f6s tohtorikoulun valinnaisella opintojaksolla. Tutkimusaineistojen avaamiseen kirjasto toteuttaa koulutusta v\u00e4hint\u00e4\u00e4n kerran vuodessa lyhyen\u00e4 verkkokoulutuksena. Tulemme mielell\u00e4mme pit\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n koulutusta my\u00f6s vaikka laitokselle tai muulle pienemm\u00e4lle ryhm\u00e4lle, jolloin voimme yhdess\u00e4 syventy\u00e4 aineistohallintasuunnitelman tekemiseen tai miten tutkimusaineistoja voidaan avata. The University of Eastern Finland Library provides information and support for research data management in trainings and by offering the data management plan (DMP) review service. The Library\u2019s research data experts provide comment on data management plans made for research on request. The support service uses the service email opendata[at]uef. The support service is especially intended to support researchers who apply for research funding, but it likewise serves all researchers planning data management.\u00a0The largest commenting task of the year involved the Academy of Finland’s applications in September; here is a summary of the experiences and feedback from researchers.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The number of plans that were sent for review almost doubled from the previous year. Nonetheless, only some of the researchers who applied for funding from the Academy of Finland submitted their DMPs for review. More information about the service is definitely needed. The researchers sent their review requests on time; the first DMPs were sent already in mid-August. This was very good for the staff, as the service was not congested during this period and we could respond quickly to the requests. This autumn, two people from the Library reviewed the DMPs in addition to their other work tasks. As the service team can vary depending on the work situation and available resources, it’s vital to use a service address for review requests and questions so that the messages are not left in anyone’s personal email but reach the right people instead.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

DMP support work is very interesting because there is always something to learn. This autumn, we helped in planning the management of gene data, bone samples, interviews, historical texts and MRI data. As there are a wide range of disciplines and different types of research data, we can naturally only provide support at a general level for data management, though we always do our best to consider the specific requirements of each data type. We comment, for example, on whether the plan covers all the relevant questions about data management, remind the researchers that data or at least metadata, i.e. the descriptive information about research data, should be opened (which is a requirement at least for Academy of Finland funding) and that it is important to back up data. Above all, these are important aspects for the researcher\u2019s work.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We collected feedback from the Library\u2019s DMP review service after the autumn funding call. According to the feedback survey, the service users were very satisfied with the service; the service received an average score of 4.6 (scale: 5 best – 1 worst). The respondents felt that they gained confidence about their own data management plan, as well as new knowledge or perspectives on data management. The ready-made texts to be included in the plan were desired, but it is impossible for anyone other than the researcher who knows their data to write the texts to the DMP. Instead, the guidance and material supporting the researcher in writing the DMP will be further developed based on the feedback received.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

With regard to data management plans, it is worth noting that time is limited and the researcher has much to prepare when applying for funding. Therefore it is a good idea to participate in data management training in advance, and these lessons can be applied when writing your own plan.The Library\u2019s Research Support website<\/a>\u00a0provides information on data management. In the spring and autumn, the Library, in cooperation with the IT service, provides training and workshops on data management, offering basic information and support for researchers who are writing DMPs for funding applications. Doctoral students and others interested in the subject are also welcome to training and workshops. For doctoral students, we also offer data management education<\/a> as an optional course. The Library provides training about open research data at least once a year in the form of a short online training session. We are also happy to provide training for the departments or other smaller groups about data management plans or opening research data. It\u00e4-Suomen yliopiston kirjasto tarjoaa tutkimusaineistojen hallintaan tietoa ja tukea koulutuksissa sek\u00e4 aineistonhallintasuunnitelmien (DMP) kommentointipalveluna. Kirjaston tutkimuksen tuen data-asiantuntijat kommentoivat pyynn\u00f6st\u00e4 tutkimusta varten tehtyj\u00e4 aineistonhallintasuunnitelmia.
