T\u00e4m\u00e4 ei ole roskaposti. T\u00e4m\u00e4 on rakkauskirje, jonka viesti on lainattu Yleisradion Mikael Hindsbergilt\u00e4, ja se kuuluu n\u00e4in: \u201cMetadata on rakkauskirje tulevaisuudelle\u201d. Kaunista, eik\u00f6 vain?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Saatat ehk\u00e4 kysy\u00e4, miten metadata ja rakkauskirje liittyv\u00e4t toisiinsa? Ent\u00e4 tulevaisuus? Tulevaisuudesta emme tied\u00e4, edes valistuneita arvauksia emme t\u00e4ss\u00e4 heit\u00e4. Mutta juuri tulevaisuuden ep\u00e4varmuuden vuoksi haluammekin muistuttaa tutkimuksen metadatasta, joka on olennainen osa tutkimusdatanhallintaa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Metadata on siis tietoa tiedosta, dataa tutkimusdatasta. Tiesitk\u00f6, ett\u00e4 on olemassa erilaisia metadatatyyppej\u00e4, kuten hallinnollinen metadata tai tekninen metadata? Valtaosa n\u00e4ihin tyyppeihin kuuluvasta&nbsp;metadatasta kertyy kuin huomaamatta erilaisten s\u00e4hk\u00f6isten j\u00e4rjestelmien ja v\u00e4lineiden avulla. Muitakin metadatan tyyppej\u00e4 tai alalajeja on olemassa.&nbsp; Erityisesti toivomme, ett\u00e4 Sinua kiinnostaisi kuvaileva metadata, sill\u00e4 sen rooli on ennen kaikkea parantaa tutkimusaineiston l\u00f6ydett\u00e4vyytt\u00e4. T\u00e4ss\u00e4 kohtaa tutkimusaineiston huolella dokumentoitu metadata muuttuukin rakkauskirjeeksi tulevaisuudelle: tutkimusdata t\u00e4ytyy tehd\u00e4 n\u00e4kyv\u00e4ksi ja hakukelpoiseksi, jotta sen s\u00e4ilytett\u00e4vyys, saavutettavuus ja jatkok\u00e4ytt\u00f6 mahdollistuisi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tutkimuksen metadatan tallennus tarkoittaa yksinkertaisimmillaan sit\u00e4, ett\u00e4 aineistosta on tallennettu tekij\u00e4n tiedot, tutkimusaineiston nimeke, aihe (mielell\u00e4\u00e4n my\u00f6s asiasanat) ja tarkoitus, k\u00e4ytt\u00f6ehdot sek\u00e4 saatavuus- tai sijaintitiedot. Tutkimusaineiston metadatan voi tallentaa tiettyjen standardien ja formaattien mukaan, mutta t\u00e4rkeint\u00e4 on se, ett\u00e4 metadataa on ylip\u00e4\u00e4ns\u00e4 ker\u00e4tty ja tallennettu. Formaattien, standardien ja sanastojen etuna on muun muassa datan yhtenev\u00e4isyys ja l\u00f6ydett\u00e4vyys, mutta my\u00f6s oman tutkimusalan ja siihen liittyvien termien n\u00e4kyv\u00e4ksi tekeminen. Tutkimusaineisto puolestaan kannattaa mahdollisuuksien mukaan tallentaa data-arkistoon jatkol\u00f6ydett\u00e4vyyden vuoksi, jolloin aineisto saa esimerkiksi pysyv\u00e4n tunnisteen.&nbsp; Toisinaan tutkimukseen liittyy salassa pidett\u00e4v\u00e4\u00e4 materiaalia, jonka vuoksi itse tutkimusta tai tutkimusaineistoa ei voi avata. Silloinkin kannattaa muistaa, ett\u00e4 tutkimuksen metadataa voi aina avata.&nbsp;Suosittelemmekin metadatan tallennusta esimerkiksi <a href=\"https:\/\/etsin.avointiede.fi\/fi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Etsin-palveluun<\/a>, jonne on mahdollista tallentaa metadataa kaikista tutkimusaineistoista.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tutkimusaineisto on arvokasta paitsi tutkijalle, my\u00f6s vastaanottajalle tai lukijalle. Annathan siis, arvoisa tutkija, tutkimuksellesi mahdollisuuden l\u00f6yty\u00e4, s\u00e4ily\u00e4 pitk\u00e4\u00e4n ja antautua jatkok\u00e4ytt\u00f6\u00e4 varten kuvailemalla ja tallentamalla tutkimuksesi metadatan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yst\u00e4v\u00e4llisin terveisin,<br \/>Anne ja Katja<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PS. This is not junk mail. This is a love letter and the title is a quote from Mikael Hindsberg at Yle (Finnish Broadcasting Company). He has said, \u201dMetadata is a love letter for the future\u201d. Beautifully said, isn\u2019t it?<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">You may wonder what metadata has to do with love letters. Or with the future, for that matter. We do not know the future and we are not going to make any educated guesses either. However, for the very reason that the future is uncertain, we want to remind you of metadata and the fact that it is an essential part of the research data management.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Metadata is information about information, data about research data. Did you know that there are different types of metadata, for example, administrative and technical metadata? Most of these types of metadata get collected almost unnoticed by different electronic systems and devices. Other types and subtypes of metadata exist, too. We hope that you would be especially interested in descriptive metadata because its role before anything is to improve the findability of research data. Thus, the meticulously documented metadata of the research data becomes a love letter for the future: research data must be made visible and searchable so that its preservability, accessibility and future usability can be ensured.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">At its simplest, storing the metadata of a research means that the name of the research data, information on the author, subject (preferably also subject headings) and purpose, terms and conditions as well as availability and location information are stored. You can store the metadata of research data according to specific standards and formats but the most important thing is that the metadata is collected and stored in the first place. The benefit of using formats, standards and vocabularies is, amongst other things, the consistency and findability of data. In addition, they help to make your own field of research and its terms visible. If possible, the research data should be stored to a data repository or archive to ensure its future findability. When the data is stored to a data repository, it will receive, for example, a permanent identifier. Sometimes a research contains confidential material and therefore it or its research data cannot be opened. However, please remember that even then you can open some of the research\u2019s metadata. Therefore, we recommend that you save the metadata, for example, to the data searching service <a href=\"https:\/\/etsin.avointiede.fi\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Etsin<\/a>\u00a0where it is possible to save metadata from all types of research data.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Research data is valuable not only for the researcher but also for the recipient or reader.
