Tutkimuksen avoimuuteen kuuluu keskeisen\u00e4 osana aineistojen avoin saatavuus. Tutkimusaineistojen avoimella saatavuudella edistet\u00e4\u00e4n tutkimuksen saavutettavuutta sek\u00e4 aineistojen ja tutkimustulosten jatkok\u00e4ytt\u00f6\u00e4. Avoimet aineistot pit\u00e4v\u00e4t sis\u00e4ll\u00e4\u00e4n monenlaista tietoa: ne voivat koostua julkaisuista, metatiedoista, dataseteist\u00e4 tai vaikkapa postereista tai PowerPoint-esityksist\u00e4. Olennaista on, ett\u00e4 aineistot ovat maksuttomasti muiden l\u00f6ydett\u00e4viss\u00e4 ja hy\u00f6dynnett\u00e4viss\u00e4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Olen aivot hiess\u00e4 perehtynyt k\u00e4yt\u00f6ss\u00e4 oleviin avoimiin tietoaineistopalveluihin ja niiden tarjoamiin mahdollisuuksiin. Tarjolla on sek\u00e4 suomalaisia ett\u00e4 kansainv\u00e4lisi\u00e4 palveluita, joista useimmat toimivat paitsi tutkimustiedon l\u00e4htein\u00e4, my\u00f6s omien tutkimustulosten jakelu- ja tallennuspaikkana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Suomalaisia avoimia tutkimusaineistojen hakupalveluita ovat mm. Etsin, AVAA, Aila, Doria ja Theseus. Etsimest\u00e4<\/strong><\/a> haetaan ja sinne tallennetaan metadataa eli tutkimusaineistoja kuvailevia tietoja eri tieteenaloilta. Tutkija tallentaa aineistonsa valitsemaansa tieteenalakohtaiseen tai yleiseen tietoarkistoon, josta metatiedot lis\u00e4t\u00e4\u00e4n Etsimeen. N\u00e4in tutkimustulokset ovat laajemman yleis\u00f6n haettavissa ja k\u00e4ytett\u00e4viss\u00e4. AVAA<\/strong><\/a> on aineistojen avaajille ja avointen aineistojen jatkohy\u00f6dynt\u00e4jille suunnattu tutkimusaineistojen julkaisualusta. AVAA sis\u00e4lt\u00e4\u00e4 t\u00e4ll\u00e4 hetkell\u00e4 p\u00e4\u00e4asiassa luonnontieteiden ja kielitieteiden paikkatietoaineistoja. Palveluportaali Ailasta<\/strong><\/a> l\u00f6ytyy yhteiskuntatieteelliseen tietoarkistoon arkistoituja, yhteiskunnallisten alojen tutkimusaineistoja metatietoineen. Aineistojen selaaminen ja hakeminen on vapaata ja aineistot ovat hy\u00f6dynnett\u00e4viss\u00e4 aineistojen luovuttajan k\u00e4ytt\u00f6ehtojen mukaisesti. Ladatut aineistot saa avattua esim. SPSS-ohjelmalla. It\u00e4-Suomen yliopiston s\u00e4hk\u00f6iset opinn\u00e4ytteet ja sarjat l\u00f6ytyv\u00e4t t\u00e4ll\u00e4 hetkell\u00e4 UEF Electronic Publications<\/bdo><\/strong><\/a> -palvelusta. Suuri osa julkaisuista on avoimesti saatavilla. Doria<\/strong><\/a> on Kansalliskirjaston yll\u00e4pit\u00e4m\u00e4 julkaisuarkisto, josta l\u00f6ytyy usean viranomaistahon tai muun julkisen organisaation (esim. ELY-keskus, Liikennevirasto ja Tilastokeskus) tuottamia julkaisuja. Theseuksesta<\/strong><\/a> voi hakea avoimesti saatavilla olevia ammattikorkeakoulujen opinn\u00e4ytet\u00f6it\u00e4 ja muita julkaisuja. Kielipankissa<\/strong><\/a> on laaja valikoima teksti- ja puheaineistoja hy\u00f6dynnett\u00e4v\u00e4ksi. Avoindata.fi<\/strong><\/a>-palvelusta l\u00f6ytyy mm. kuntien avoimia aineistoja. Vilkaise my\u00f6s kansalliskirjaston julkaisuarkistopalvelua<\/strong><\/a>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eurooppalainen Zenodo<\/strong><\/a> on tutkimustulosten jakamiseen ja tallentamiseen keskittyv\u00e4, OpenAIRE-hankkeen ja CERN:n kehitt\u00e4m\u00e4 palvelu. Zenodoon voi tallentaa aineistoja kaikilta tieteenaloilta. Palvelussa on avoimesti saatavissa mm. postereita, datasettej\u00e4, esityksi\u00e4, konferenssijulkaisuja, kuvia ja artikkeleita. EU-komission tukema, tutkimuksen avoimuutta edist\u00e4v\u00e4 OpenAIRE<\/strong><\/a> -portaali haravoi eurooppalaisia ja kansainv\u00e4lisi\u00e4 julkaisuarkistoja, ja sis\u00e4lt\u00e4\u00e4 t\u00e4ll\u00e4 hetkell\u00e4 noin 10 miljoonaa avointa julkaisua tai data-aineistoa. Portaali my\u00f6s opastaa tutkijoita l\u00f6yt\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n omaan tarpeeseen sopivan julkaisu- tai data-arkiston. CESSDA<\/strong><\/a> on eurooppalaisten yhteiskuntatieteellisten tietoarkistojen muodostama palvelukokonaisuus, jonka suomalainen palveluntuottaja on yhteiskuntatieteellinen tietoarkisto Aila. CESSDA:n sivuille on koottu eurooppalaisia tietoarkistoja ja -palveluita valtioittain. European Data Portal<\/bdo><\/strong><\/a> haravoi metadataa julkisen sektorin informaatiosta. Euroopan tasolla portaali kokoaa kansallista avointa aineistoa yhteen paikkaan muiden hy\u00f6dynnett\u00e4v\u00e4ksi. My\u00f6s European Union Open Data Portal<\/strong><\/a> <\/bdo>tarjoaa keskitetyn p\u00e4\u00e4syn EU:n toimielinten ja laitosten tuottamiin aineistoihin. Piipahda EUDAT<\/strong><\/a>:n sivuilla katsastamassa heid\u00e4n tietoaineistopalveluitansa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DOAJ<\/strong><\/a> on hakemisto verkossa vapaasti saatavana olevista kansainv\u00e4lisist\u00e4 tieteellisist\u00e4 aikakauslehdist\u00e4. Palvelun tavoitteena on kattaa kaikki tieteenalat. Europe PMC<\/bdo><\/strong><\/a> puolestaan kokoaa avoinna olevia PubMed:n ja PubMed Central:n kokotekstej\u00e4 ja abstrakteja. Pangaea<\/strong><\/a>:sta voi etsi\u00e4 geo- ja ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6tieteiden datasettej\u00e4. ArXiv<\/strong><\/a>-arkisto on tuttu etenkin matemaatikoille ja fyysikoille, sill\u00e4 n\u00e4ill\u00e4 aloilla tieteellisten tutkimusten ennakkojulkaisut on jo vuosia rinnakkaistallennettu ArXiv:iin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Palveluita avoimen datan etsimiseen ja julkaisemiseen on jo olemassa, hankalinta lienee valita itselleen ja omalle ty\u00f6lleen k\u00e4ytt\u00f6kelpoisimmat vaihtoehdot. Yleens\u00e4 omien t\u00f6iden julkaisemiseen suositellaan oman tieteenalan tietoarkistoa, jotta tutkimusaineistot saavuttavat oikean lukija- ja k\u00e4ytt\u00e4j\u00e4kunnan. UEF:n tulevan rinnakkaistallennuspalvelun, UEF\/\/eRepositoryn, avulla voimme l\u00e4hitulevaisuudessa saada UEF-julkaisut tallennettua avoimeen julkaisuarkistoon. T\u00e4m\u00e4n tieteen avoimuutta ja n\u00e4kyvyytt\u00e4 aimoharppauksin parantavan rinnakkaistallennuspalvelun k\u00e4ytt\u00f6\u00f6nottoa viel\u00e4 pari kuukautta odotellessa\u2026 Sill\u00e4 v\u00e4lin rohkeasti tutustumaan ja kokeilemaan n\u00e4it\u00e4 muita!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Open research data materials: what and for whom?<\/bdo><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

An essential part of open science is open access to research data.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Open access to data promotes the accessibility to research and the follow-up application of research data and results. Open access data features many sorts of information: publications, metadata, data sets or even posters or PowerPoint presentations. The main idea is that the data can be accessed and utilised by others \u2013 free of charge.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

My brain has been set to get acquainted with open access data material services that would already be in use and the possibilities they could offer. There are both Finnish and international services available, and most of them work not only as sources for research information but also as places of storing and distributing your own research results.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finnish open access data material search services include Etsin, AVAA, Aila, Doria and Theseus. In Etsin<\/a>, you can search for and save metadata, i.e. descriptive information regarding research data from different fields of science. Researchers choose into which discipline-specific or general data archive they store their data. Metadata is retrieved from there and added to Etsin. This allows research results to be retrievable and usable for a larger audience.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

AVAA<\/a> is an open data publishing platform designed for researchers who use and further refine data material. At the moment AVAA contains mainly georeferenced data and information of natural sciences and linguistics. Service portal Aila<\/a> has research data archived in the sociological data archive with their metadata. Browsing and searching the material is free of charge and the materials can be utilised according to terms and conditions defined by the data provider. The uploaded materials can be opened with software such as SPSS.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The electronic theses and series publications of the University of Eastern Finland can be found in the UEF Electronic Publications<\/a> service at the moment. Many of the publications are openly accessible. Doria is a publication archive maintained by the National Library of Finland. In Doria<\/a> you can find publications of several authorities or other public organisations (for example, Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment, Finnish Transport Agency, Statistics Finland). You can use Theseus<\/a> to search openly available theses and other publications of universities of applied sciences and polytechnics. The Language Bank of Finland<\/a> has a wide variety of written and spoken material to be utilised, while Avoindata.fi<\/a> contains, for instance, open material concerning municipalities, towns and cities in Finland. Take also a look at the National Library\u2019s publication archive service<\/a>!<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The European Zenodo<\/a> is a service developed by the OpenAIRE project and CERN, focusing on distribution and storage of research results. You can save materials from all fields of science into Zenodo. The service openly provides posters, data sets, presentations, conference publications, images and articles. The open access-promoting OpenAIRE<\/a> portal supported by the European Commission gathers material from European and international publishing archives. At the moment it contains approximately ten million open publications and data material files. The portal also guides researchers to find a suitable publication or data archive for their needs.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

CESSDA<\/a> is a service consortium comprised by European sociological data archives. Its Finnish service provider is the aforementioned Aila, and its European data archives and services have been gathered from different nations, while European Data Portal<\/a> gathers metadata from public sector information. On the European level, the portal collects national open data material into one place to be utilised by others. In addition, European Union Open Data Portal<\/a> offers a concentrated access to material produced by the institutions and departments of the European Union. Visit also the EUDAT<\/a>\u2019s website to check out their data material services.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

DOAJ<\/a> is an index of all international scientific journals openly accessible online. The goal of the service is to cover all fields of science. On the other hand, Europe PMC<\/a> gathers open full text and abstract material of the PubMed and PubMed Central databases. Pangaea<\/a> can be used to search data sets of geological and environmental sciences. The ArXiv<\/a> archive might be familiar to mathematicians and physicists, for practitioners of these fields of science have been self-archiving preprints of scientific research projects for years in ArXiv.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Services for open data searching and publishing do already exist, but the most difficult thing may be to choose the most suitable options for you and your work. Usually it is recommended to use a data archive of your own field of science, so that your research data materials reach the right readers and users. An upcoming self-archiving service brought to you by UEF, the UEF\/\/eRepository, will help us to store UEF publications into an open publication archive in the near future. A service that will promote the openness and visibility of science in leaps and bounds is coming, so stay tuned. Meanwhile, go ahead and have a go at the ones mentioned above!<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n
