Syksy kylmenee, joten palataan hieman ajassa taaksep\u00e4in UEFin kirjaston harjoittelijoiden l\u00e4mpim\u00e4mpiin ja v\u00e4rikk\u00e4\u00e4mpiin tunnelmiin syyskuun lopulla. P\u00e4\u00e4simme osallistumaan kansalaistieteen ryhm\u00e4n kanssa Tutkijoiden y\u00f6n toteuttamiseen. Kyseess\u00e4 on Euroopan laajuinen tiedetapahtuma, johon osallistui Suomessa l\u00e4hes kymmenen yliopistoa. T\u00e4n\u00e4 vuonna tapahtuma j\u00e4rjestettiin 25.9. molemmilla UEFin kampuksilla.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Valmistautuminen ja suunnittelu<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Ty\u00f6nkuvaamme kuului Joensuun kampuksen tapahtumapisteen suunnittelu ja toteutus yhdess\u00e4 kirjaston kansalaistieteen tiimin kanssa. Oli mielenkiintoista osallistua n\u00e4in isoon tapahtumaan. Meill\u00e4 oli hyvin v\u00e4h\u00e4n tapahtumasuunnittelukokemusta, joten pidimme t\u00e4t\u00e4 mahdollisuutta arvokkaana. Osallistuimme kansalaistieteen tapahtumapisteiden sosiaalisen median viestinn\u00e4n ja Joensuun toteutuksen suunnitteluihin. Lis\u00e4ksi perehdyimme kansalaistieteeseen ja erilaisiin kansalaistiedehankkeisiin It\u00e4-Suomen yliopistossa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joensuun tapahtumapisteell\u00e4mme oli vierailevina t\u00e4htin\u00e4 ECHO-hankkeen<\/a> tutkijoita. Heid\u00e4n kansalaistiedett\u00e4 edustavassa hankkeessaan tavalliset ihmiset osallistuvat maaper\u00e4n\u00e4ytteiden ker\u00e4\u00e4miseen Euroopan alueella. Kaikki halukkaat saivat pisteelt\u00e4mme mukaansa paketin ohjeineen maaper\u00e4n\u00e4ytteiden ottamiseen, ja heit\u00e4 riitti, sill\u00e4 saimme kaikki paketit jaettua tapahtuman aikana. Pisteell\u00e4mme pystyi tutustumaan my\u00f6s muihin UEFissa toteutettuihin kansalaistiedehankkeisiin. Esimerkiksi VIZAZI-hankkeessa<\/a> on tutkittu nuorten osallisuuden vahvistamista ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6hallinnassa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ECHO-hankkeen tutkijat toivat my\u00f6s mukanaan k\u00e4vij\u00f6it\u00e4 houkuttelevaksi aktiviteetiksi tietokoneeseen liitett\u00e4v\u00e4n mikroskoopin. Oli hauska seurata, miten eri ik\u00e4iset osallistujat olivat uteliaita ja riemuissaan niin puun juurien, vaahteranlehden kuin omien k\u00e4siens\u00e4 tutkimisesta mikroskoopin avulla.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Toisena aktiviteettina molemmilla kampuksilla oli kysymystaulu, johon k\u00e4vij\u00e4t kirjoittivat vastauksia eri kysymyksiin. Joensuussa kysyimme, mist\u00e4 aiheesta k\u00e4vij\u00e4t haluaisivat tehd\u00e4 tutkimusta. Etenkin lasten vastaukset ja suulliset perustelut olivat ihanan monipuolisia ja persoonallisia. Suosittuja aiheita vastauksissa olivat kulttuuriin ja luontoon liittyv\u00e4t tutkimusaiheet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tapahtumailta ja tunnelmat<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Tapahtumassa oli ihastuttavan paljon k\u00e4vij\u00f6it\u00e4. K\u00e4vimme mukavia ja avartavia keskusteluja niin tutkijoiden kuin pisteell\u00e4 k\u00e4yneiden tapahtuman osallistujien kanssa. P\u00e4ivystysvuorojemme lis\u00e4ksi meill\u00e4 oli aikaa k\u00e4yd\u00e4 my\u00f6s tutkimassa tapahtuman muita pisteit\u00e4. Tutustuimme muun muassa karjalan kielen s\u00e4ilytt\u00e4miseen ja teologian tutkimukseen sek\u00e4 arvuuttelimme satuhahmojen alkuper\u00e4maita. Lis\u00e4ksi kuvansimme logopedian ultra\u00e4\u00e4nell\u00e4 kielen liikkeit\u00e4 puhuessamme ja lauloimme karaokea \u00e4\u00e4nenmuuntimella. Suosikkejamme olivat langankehruu ja kielen ultra\u00e4\u00e4nitutkimus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tutkijoiden y\u00f6h\u00f6n osallistuminen oli innostavaa. Opimme tapahtumaj\u00e4rjest\u00e4mist\u00e4, projektity\u00f6skentely\u00e4 ja saimme arvokasta ty\u00f6kokemusta jatkoa ajatellen. Kansalaistieteeseen tutustuminen oli hyvin mielenkiintoista ja samalla avautui konkreettisesti se, kuinka tutkimus voi hy\u00f6ty\u00e4 kansalaisten kanssa tehdyst\u00e4 yhteisty\u00f6st\u00e4. Parasta kokemuksessa olivat konkreettiset ty\u00f6mme tulokset ja n\u00e4hd\u00e4 etenkin lapsien l\u00f6yt\u00e4v\u00e4n tieteen ilon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As autumn grows colder, let\u2019s look back to the warmer, more colourful days of late September, when we took part in Researchers\u2019 Night as library interns at UEF. We helped the citizen science team to organize the event. Researcher\u2019s Night is a Europe-wide science event, with nearly ten universities taking part in Finland. This year it was held on 25 September at both UEF campuses.<\/strong><\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Preparing and planning<\/bdo><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Our role was to plan and run the event stand at the Joensuu campus together with the library\u2019s citizen science team. It was exciting to be involved in such a large event. We had very little experience in event planning, so we considered this a valuable opportunity. We helped to plan social media communications for the citizen science stands and the event in Joensuu. We also learned about citizen science and various citizen science projects at UEF.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Researchers from the ECHO project<\/a> were special guests at our Joensuu stand. In their citizen science project, members of the public collect soil samples across Europe. Visitors could take home a kit with instructions for collecting soil samples \u2014and there was plenty of interest: we handed out every kit during the event. Visitors could also learn about other citizen science projects at UEF. For example, the VIZAZI project<\/a> has explored ways to strengthen young people\u2019s participation in environmental governance.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ECHO researchers also brough a computer-connected microscope to attract visitors. It was fun to see participants of all ages explore tree roots, a maple leaf and even their own hands under the microscope, full of curiosity and delight.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another activity at both campuses was a question board where visitors could write their answers to different questions. In Joensuu, we asked what topic visitors would like to research. The children\u2019s answers \u2013 and the reasons they gave \u2013 were especially varied and full of personality. Popular topics included culture and nature.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event and its atmosphere<\/bdo><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There were a wonderful number of visitors. We had enjoyable and thought-provoking conversations with both researchers and people who stopped by our stand. In addition to our shifts, we had time to explore the other stands at the event. We learned about efforts to preserve the Karelian language and how the researchers research theology and tried to guess the countries of origin of fairy tale characters. We also used an ultrasound equipment to visualise tongue movements while speaking and sang karaoke with a voice changer. Our favorites were wool-spinning and the ultrasound imaging of the tongue.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taking part in Researchers\u2019 Night was inspiring. We learned about organizing events and working on projects and gained valuable experience for the future. Learning about citizen science was fascinating and it also gave us concrete sense of how research can benefit from collaboration with the public. The best part of the experience was seeing the tangible results of our work \u2013 and, above all, seeing children discover the joy of science.<\/bdo>
