So this feels like a good moment to sit down and ask what kinds of thoughts the use of AI raises in two experienced experts in academic information searching.</bdo>

<bdo lang="en" dir="ltr">What are the benefits of artificial intelligence fo</bdo><bdo lang="en" dir="ltr">r</bdo><bdo lang="en" dir="ltr"> information searching?</bdo>

Laura: <bdo lang="en" dir="ltr">I’m speaking here especially about AI tools that are integrated directly into databases – </bdo> <bdo lang="en" dir="ltr">so-called AI assistants. Such assistants are available, for example, in UEF Primo, Scopus, and Web of Science. These AI assistants are subscription-based and can be accessed by members of UEF. The basic idea behind these tools is that they generate a summary in response to your question based on the material available in the database and display the sources used for that summary. These assistants are particularly useful when you are getting acquainted with a new topic. They help you quickly grasp the main points. Previously, when encountering an unfamiliar subject, you might have gone to read Wikipedia just to get some kind of overall picture. Now, that overview is provided by an AI assistant.</bdo>

<bdo lang="en" dir="ltr">It’s also a good thing that information seekers don’t need to immediately master all search techniques to function within databases, because in some databases you can search for articles and other sources simply by asking a question. Getting started is therefore easier. If needed, the search can then be continued independently using more traditional methods. For certain information needs, this kind of AI-assisted database searching is perfectly sufficient</bdo><bdo lang="en" dir="ltr"> – especially when there is no need to explore the topic more deeply or comprehensively.</bdo>

Taisa: <bdo lang="en" dir="ltr">If we think about AI tools other than those integrated into databases, Copilot, for example, is quite good with terminology. It can suggest search terms that you might not think of yourself. It’s also good at finding synonyms. So, when brainstorming search terms, it can save a lot of time.</bdo>

<bdo lang="en" dir="ltr">How do you use artificial intelligence for information searching?</bdo>

Taisa: <bdo lang="en" dir="ltr">I mainly use AI specifically for brainstorming search terms. Not all of the search terms suggested by AI are directly usable, though – you have to be able to pick out the best ones. In addition, if you already know how database searching works, you can ask tools like Copilot to create complete search queries. This does require a certain level of information-searching expertise, because you need to be able to critically evaluate the search queries suggested by AI. Different databases also operate using slightly different techniques. AI can help translate these searches from one database to another.</bdo>

Laura: <bdo lang="en" dir="ltr">I also mainly use Copilot for generating search terms. For example, I might ask, “I’m doing a search in an article database on topic X – come up with search terms for me.” Recently, however, I’ve noticed that this doesn’t necessarily work very well anymore. The lists of search terms and concepts can become enormous, and some of the terms are highly irrelevant. I’m now experimenting with whether a more direct command like “give me synonyms for concept X” might work better going forward.</bdo>

<bdo lang="en" dir="ltr">Taisa </bdo><bdo lang="en" dir="ltr">also mentioned creating search queries with the help of AI. I don’t use AI for that purpose myself; I’ve noticed that after 25 years of crafting search queries by hand, AI doesn’t do it any better, or save me any time. In this respect, experience still outperforms AI.</bdo>

<bdo lang="en" dir="ltr">What concerns do you have about using AI in information searching?</bdo>

Laura: <bdo lang="en" dir="ltr">When everything is easy and fast and the result looks good, you don’t always have the patience to check whether things are actually correct. Even though AI assistants integrated into databases base their summaries on genuine sources, AI can still misinterpret or distort information. The less you know about a topic, the harder it is to evaluate the results critically. It is also more difficult for the user to influence an AI-driven search, because the process is not always very transparent. With traditional searching, you can modify your own search query and thereby influence the search process and its results.</bdo>

Taisa: <bdo lang="en" dir="ltr">I sometimes worry that people will do their entire information search using AI and no longer search databases at all. AI can invent studies and sources that don’t actually exist. That’s why it’s extremely important to verify the sources suggested by AI – you can’t trust them blindly. I’m also sometimes concerned about whether people know how to prompt AI properly. It would be good to understand that the same prompt can produce different results on different days. This is quite typical of AI tools based on large language models. As a result, searches are not reproducible. In some theses and research projects, information searching is a research method in its own right. It must be done by the researcher</bdo><bdo lang="en" dir="ltr">s</bdo><bdo lang="en" dir="ltr"> themselves, reported properly, and – crucially – it needs to be reproducible.</bdo>

<bdo lang="en" dir="ltr">Both of my colleagues – like myself – are also concerned about the environmental impact of using artificial intelligence. Who would want to further burden an environment that is already under strain? We spend a long time discussing the dilemma that, in order to keep up with developments in information searching, AI tools must be tested and adopted. In the end, we arrive at only a thinly comforting conclusion: we use AI as little as possible in today’s knowledge work, and only for legitimate purposes. The time for AI-generated images and light‑hearted video clips has passed, but AI has certainly come to stay within databases.</bdo>

<bdo lang="en" dir="ltr">Give a tip for using AI in information searching or in knowledge work more generally</bdo>

Laura: <bdo lang="en" dir="ltr">The other day, I was pleasantly surprised by how well Copilot can help with technical IT problems. In the past, I would have spent a lot of time struggling with a malfunctioning system, but this time Copilot found a solution almost instantly. I also want to point out that AI in information searching is developing very quickly. It’s not a good idea to get stuck with a single tool that you may have used in the past – such as ChatGPT – which many people have adopted as a permanent tool. New tools are constantly emerging and development is ongoing, and with a bit of experimentation you may find a much better tool for your own needs.</bdo>

Taisa: <bdo lang="en" dir="ltr">Get to know the AI tool you are using. Familiarize yourself with how large language models available on the open web, such as Copilot or ChatGPT, actually work. For example, do they have access to subscription-based, academic databases? Compare these AI applications with AI assistants that are integrated directly into databases, and consider what the differences between them are. This kind of understanding already goes a long way when searching for scholarly information.</bdo>

Riitta Holopainen, tietoasiantuntija | <bdo lang="en" dir="ltr">Information Specialist</bdo>
Opetus- ja tietopalvelut | <bdo lang="en" dir="ltr">Training and information services</bdo>

(Please, scroll down to read in English.) ”Tekoäly alkaa kyllä olla jokapäiväinen puheenaihe”, toteaa kollegani Taisa Teams -puhelussa tietokoneeni ruudulla.
