Se on hieno!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yliopistossa ja suomalaisessa yhteiskunnassa el\u00e4mme monenlaisen tiedon keskell\u00e4, mutta harvoin pys\u00e4hdymme pohtimaan, kuka tiedon omistaa tai kenelle se kuuluu. Kenen tietoa opetamme? Miten teko\u00e4ly muokkaa tiedon kulkua ja saatavuutta? Miten voimme yhdess\u00e4 edist\u00e4\u00e4 tiedon ja oppimisen avoimuutta?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ajatustavan muutos<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Tieteellinen tieto auttaa ymm\u00e4rt\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n maailmaa, kehitt\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n uutta ja ratkaisemaan globaaleja haasteita. Silti suuri osa tiedosta, niin tieteellisist\u00e4 julkaisuista kuin oppimateriaaleistakin, on edelleen maksullista, tai kokonaan saavuttamattomissa, kuten valtaosa tutkimusdatoista. Suomessakin avoimen tieteen ja avoimen oppimisen merkityst\u00e4 joudutaan edelleen perustelemaan. Miksi t\u00e4m\u00e4 on t\u00e4rke\u00e4\u00e4 \u2013 ja mit\u00e4 voimme UEFissa tehd\u00e4 asian edist\u00e4miseksi?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tiedon ja oppimisen avoimuus ei ole vain tekninen tai tekij\u00e4noikeuksiin liittyv\u00e4 kysymys, vaan kulttuurin ja ajatustavan muutos. Kompastuskivi\u00e4 muodostavat usein mm. teemaan liittyv\u00e4n keskustelun kapea-alaisuus, kokemukset resurssien puutteesta, Creative Commons -lisenssiosaamisen haasteet ja se, ettei avoimuus aina n\u00e4y meritoitumisessa. Siksi tarvitaan esimerkkej\u00e4, jotka osoittavat, ett\u00e4 tiedon ja oppimisen avoimuus on mahdollista ja siit\u00e4 hy\u00f6tyv\u00e4t kaikki.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Avoin tiede ja avoin oppiminen \u2013 arvona yhdenvertaisuus<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Kun tutkimusta rahoitetaan, julkaistaan ja hy\u00f6dynnet\u00e4\u00e4n eri tavoin, kuka omistaa syntyv\u00e4n tiedon ja kuka saa p\u00e4\u00e4tt\u00e4\u00e4 sen k\u00e4yt\u00f6st\u00e4? Tutkijat, yliopistot, rahoittajat, kustantajat vai koko yhteiskunta? Tutkijat ovat tieteellisen tiedon ensisijaisia tuottajia. Yleens\u00e4 he ty\u00f6skentelev\u00e4t yliopistoissa tai tutkimuslaitoksissa, jotka tarjoavat resurssit ja infrastruktuurin. Moni tutkimus saa rahoituksensa valtiolta, EU:lta tai muilta julkisilta tai yksityisilt\u00e4 tahoilta. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Iso osa tieteellisist\u00e4 julkaisuista ja oppimateriaaleista on maksullisia ja suurten kustantajien hallussa. Etenkin tieteellisten artikkelien suhteen t\u00e4m\u00e4 on johtanut tilanteeseen, jossa tutkijat maksavat julkaistakseen ty\u00f6ns\u00e4, ja lukijat maksavat p\u00e4\u00e4st\u00e4kseen lukemaan. Avoin tiede pyrkii muuttamaan t\u00e4t\u00e4: erityisesti julkisella rahoituksella tuotetun tiedon tulisi olla vapaasti kaikkien saatavilla. T\u00e4m\u00e4 koskee paitsi tieteellisi\u00e4 julkaisuja, my\u00f6s tutkimusdatoja ja oppimateriaaleja. Lis\u00e4ksi pyrit\u00e4\u00e4n varmistamaan, ett\u00e4 tutkija voi s\u00e4ilytt\u00e4\u00e4 tekij\u00e4noikeudet omaan julkaisuunsa tieteellisen julkaisemisen prosessissa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Avoin tiede voi tuoda tutkimusta l\u00e4hemm\u00e4s arkea. T\u00e4m\u00e4 tarkoittaisi esim. sit\u00e4, ett\u00e4 kansalaisilla olisi paremmat mahdollisuudet p\u00e4\u00e4st\u00e4 k\u00e4siksi tieteelliseen tietoon, tutkijat voisivat hy\u00f6dynt\u00e4\u00e4 olemassa olevia tutkimusdatoja omissa tutkimushankkeissaan, opettajilla ja oppijoilla olisi k\u00e4yt\u00f6ss\u00e4\u00e4n laadukkaita avoimia oppimateriaaleja ja p\u00e4\u00e4tt\u00e4j\u00e4t perustaisivat p\u00e4\u00e4t\u00f6ksentekonsa ajantasaiseen ja luotettavaan tietoon. Niin elinkeinoel\u00e4m\u00e4ss\u00e4 kuin perusarjessakin tarvitaan lis\u00e4\u00e4 ajankohtaista, ymm\u00e4rrett\u00e4v\u00e4\u00e4, tutkimusperustaista tietoa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Erityisen t\u00e4rke\u00e4 tieteen avoimuus on globaalille etel\u00e4lle. Avoimet julkaisut, datarepositoriot ja oppimateriaalit mahdollistavat p\u00e4\u00e4syn uusimpaan tutkimukseen, tukevat koulutuksen laatua ja vahvistavat paikallista osaamista. Kun tieto on vapaasti saatavilla, poistetaan saatavuuden esteit\u00e4, edistet\u00e4\u00e4n yhdenvertaisuutta ja parhaimmillaan vauhditetaan kehityst\u00e4, koulutusta ja innovaatioita.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Teko\u00e4ly yhdenvertaisuuden palveluksessa?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Teko\u00e4ly voi osaltaan parantaa muun muassa oppimisen saavutettavuutta ja inklusiivisuutta esimerkiksi muokattaessa avoimia oppimateriaaleja eri kielille ja k\u00e4ytt\u00f6tarkoituksiin &#8211; lisenssiehtojen mukaisesti tietenkin. Teko\u00e4lyn k\u00e4ytt\u00f6 edellytt\u00e4\u00e4 kuitenkin toimivaa teknist\u00e4 infrastruktuuria, jota ei ole kaikkialla. Viime vuonna julkaistu <a href=\"https:\/\/avointiede.fi\/fi\/ajankohtaista\/tekoalyn-ja-avoimuuden-ristipolytysta-uudessa-dubain-julistuksessa\">UNESCOn Dubain julistus<\/a> (Dubai Declaration on Open Educational Resources (OER)) korostaa, ett\u00e4 teko\u00e4lyn tulisi tunnistaa materiaalien tekij\u00e4t ja lisenssit, jotta oppimateriaalien tuotanto olisi luotettavaa ja tekij\u00f6iden ansioiden n\u00e4kyminen s\u00e4ilyisi. Kehityksen suunta t\u00e4m\u00e4n suhteen j\u00e4\u00e4 viel\u00e4 n\u00e4ht\u00e4v\u00e4ksi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Kartalla tekij\u00e4noikeuksista<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Monia pohdituttaa, tarkoittaako avoimuus tekij\u00e4noikeuksista luopumista. Ei tarkoita. Open Access -viikolla on hyv\u00e4 muistutella, ett\u00e4 lisenssien, kuten <a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/chooser\/\">Creative Commons<\/a>, avulla suojaat omaa ty\u00f6t\u00e4si ja kerrot muille, miten materiaalia saa k\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4. Jakamalla lisensoitua aineistoa, julkaisuja, dataa tai oppimateriaalia, saat n\u00e4kyvyytt\u00e4 ty\u00f6llesi ja osaamisellesi, mutta my\u00f6s mahdollistat muille laadukkaiden materiaalien hy\u00f6dynt\u00e4misen, s\u00e4\u00e4st\u00e4t resursseja ja edist\u00e4t yhteisty\u00f6t\u00e4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Yhteis\u00f6llisyys avaimena<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Ilman yhteist\u00e4 sitoutumista muutosta ei tapahdu. Kansainv\u00e4lisen\u00e4 vauhdittajana toimii muun muassa <a href=\"https:\/\/avointiede.fi\/sites\/default\/files\/2023-03\/UNESCO-suositus-2021.pdf\">UNESCOn avoimen tieteen suositus<\/a>. Kansallisella tasolla aktiivista ty\u00f6t\u00e4 tehd\u00e4\u00e4n <a href=\"https:\/\/avointiede.fi\/fi\/avoimen-tieteen-asiantuntijaryhmat\">avoimen tieteen ja tutkimuksen (AVOTT) ty\u00f6ryhmiss\u00e4<\/a>, joihin kaikki tutkimusyhteis\u00f6n j\u00e4senet ovat tervetulleita. My\u00f6s meill\u00e4 UEFissa avoimen tieteen eri osa-alueita edistet\u00e4\u00e4n jo monin tavoin. Emme kuitenkaan voi j\u00e4m\u00e4ht\u00e4\u00e4 paikoillemme, vaan meid\u00e4n on hyv\u00e4 olla mukana muutosten kelkassa ja seurata aktiivisesti, mit\u00e4 kansallisesti ja kansainv\u00e4lisesti avoimen tieteen saralla tapahtuu. Open Access -viikko on tilaisuus pys\u00e4hty\u00e4 ja kysy\u00e4: Miten voimme edist\u00e4\u00e4 avoimuutta, avointa tietoa, oppimista ja opetusta sek\u00e4 avoimia oppimateriaaleja? Vastaus on yhteis\u00f6llisyys: kun opettajat, tutkijat, kirjastot ja opiskelijat toimivat yhdess\u00e4 avoimuuden edist\u00e4miseksi, avoimuuden taustalla oleva arvomaailma kirkastuu ja korostuu. Kenties se voidaan sitten omaksua toimintatavaksi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>T\u00e4llaisten teemojen parissa viihdymme t\u00e4ll\u00e4 viikolla. Edistet\u00e4\u00e4n tiedon avoimuutta ja juhlitaan Open Access -viikkoa. Sticker design: Bettiina Lievonen.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This week marks the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.openaccessweek.org\/\">International Open Access Week<\/a> (Oct 20\u2013Oct 26, 2025) under the theme &#8221;Who Owns Our Knowledge?&#8221;. The UEF is celebrating the week in many ways: There will be blog posts related to the theme, webinars, the traditional open thesis raffle, and, of course, the awarding of the Open Science Advocate \u2013 for the tenth year already! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moreover, don&#8217;t forget to pick up the UEF\u2019s own Open Science sticker from the library. It looks great!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At universities and in Finnish society, we live surrounded by many kinds of knowledge, but we rarely stop to consider who owns the knowledge or to whom it belongs. Whose knowledge do we teach? How does artificial intelligence change the flow and accessibility of knowledge? How can we together promote the openness of knowledge and education?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Change in Mindset<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Scientific knowledge helps us understand the world, develop new things, and solve global challenges. Still, much of the knowledge \u2013 both scientific publications and educational resources \u2013 remains behind paywalls, or is completely inaccessible, such as most research data. Even in Finland, the importance of open science and open education still needs to be justified. Why is it important, and what can we do at the UEF to advance openness?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The openness of knowledge and education is not just a technical or copyright issue but a cultural and mindset change. Obstacles often include the narrow scope of discussions on the topic, experienced lack of resources, challenges in understanding Creative Commons licenses, and the fact that openness does not always contribute to academic merit. That\u2019s why we need examples showing that openness in knowledge and education is possible and benefits everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Open Science and Open Education \u2013 Equity as a Value<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When research is funded, published, and used in different ways, who owns the resulting knowledge and who decides how it is used? Researchers, universities, funders, publishers, or society as a whole? Researchers are the primary producers of scientific knowledge. They usually work at universities or research institutes that provide the required resources and infrastructure, although many studies are funded by the state, the EU, or other public or private entities, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A large part of scientific publications and educational materials is behind paywalls and controlled by major publishers. Especially with scientific articles, this has led to a situation where researchers pay to publish their work, and readers pay to access it. Open science aims to change this: Especially knowledge produced with public funding should be freely available to all. This applies not only to scientific publications but also to research data and educational resources. In addition, efforts are made to ensure that the researcher can retain the copyright to their publication in the process of scientific publishing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Open science can bring research closer to everyday life. This would mean, for example, that citizens would have better opportunities to access scientific information, researchers could use existing research data in their own projects, teachers and learners would have quality open educational resources at their disposal, and decision-makers would base their decisions on up-to-date and reliable information. Both in business and in everyday life, there is a need for more timely, understandable, and research-based information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The openness of science is especially important for the global south. Open publications, data repositories, and learning materials enable access to the latest research, support the quality of education, and strengthen local expertise. When knowledge is freely available, barriers to access are removed, equity is promoted, and at best, development, education, and innovation gain in the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Artificial Intelligence in the Service of Equity?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Artificial intelligence can also help improve learning accessibility and inclusion, for example, by adapting open educational materials for different languages and purposes, according to license terms. However, using AI requires a functional technical infrastructure, which is not available everywhere. Last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/unesdoc.unesco.org\/ark:\/48223\/pf0000392271.locale=en\">UNESCO\u2019s Dubai Declaration on Open Educational Resources (OER)<\/a> emphasised that AI should recognise the creators and licenses of materials to ensure reliable production of learning materials and ensure that creators\u2019 contributions are acknowledged. The direction of development in this regard remains to be seen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Revision Time: Copyrights<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Many wonder if openness means giving up copyrights. It does not. During Open Access Week, it is good to remember that licenses, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/chooser\/\">Creative Commons<\/a>, help protect your work and inform others how the material can be used. By sharing licensed materials, publications, data, or learning resources, you gain visibility for your work and expertise, but also enable others to use quality materials, save resources, and promote collaboration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Community as the Key&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Without shared commitment, change will not happen. At the international level, <a href=\"https:\/\/unesdoc.unesco.org\/ark:\/48223\/pf0000379949.locale=en\">UNESCO\u2019s Recommendation on Open Science<\/a> is one of the driving forces. At the national level, active work is being done in the <a href=\"https:\/\/avointiede.fi\/en\/open-science-expert-panels\">Open Science and Research (AVOTT) working groups<\/a>, which welcome all members of the research community. At the UEF, we are already promoting various aspects of open science in many ways. However, we cannot remain stagnant; instead, we should stay involved in the ongoing changes and actively follow national and international developments in open science. Open Access Week is an opportunity to pause and reflect: How can we promote openness, open knowledge, open education, and open educational resources? The answer is community: When teachers, researchers, libraries, and students work together to promote openness, the values underlying openness become clearer and more prominent. Perhaps then openness can become the standard way of operating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These are the themes we are focusing on this week. Let\u2019s advance open knowledge and celebrate Open Access Week.
