Hanke arvioi, kehitti ja rakensi infrastruktuuria uuden sukupolven tutkimusmetriikoille ja indikaattoreille tuottamalla dataa, ty\u00f6kaluja, palveluita ja ohjeistusta muun muassa Euroopan avoimen tieteen pilvipalveluekosysteemin (<bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">European Open Science Cloud<\/bdo>) laajentamiseksi ja seurantapalveluiden parantamiseksi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Suomesta GraspOS-hankkeeseen osallistuivat hankepartnereina Tieteellisten seurain valtuuskunta (TSV) ja Tieteen tietotekniikan keskus (CSC) sek\u00e4 CSC:n alaisena affiliaattina It\u00e4-Suomen yliopisto (UEF). UEF toimi yhten\u00e4 hankkeen yhdeks\u00e4st\u00e4 pilottiorganisaatiosta ja edusti tutkimusinfrastruktuurity\u00f6ss\u00e4 yliopiston tutkimusta tekev\u00e4n organisaation n\u00e4k\u00f6kulmaa. Toteutimme osana hanketoimintaa my\u00f6s UEFin pilottitutkimuksen, jossa arvioimme ja kehitimme uusia menetelmi\u00e4 vastuulliseen tutkimuksen arviointiin ja avoimen tieteen seurantaan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">UEF-kehitt\u00e4misty\u00f6ss\u00e4 analysoimme tutkimusaktiviteetteja<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>UEFin pilotissamme tavoitteenamme oli l\u00f6yt\u00e4\u00e4 innovatiivisia tapoja edist\u00e4\u00e4 avointa tiedett\u00e4. Analysoimme ja arvioimme v\u00e4hemm\u00e4n k\u00e4ytettyj\u00e4 avoimen tieteen indikaattoreita. Tutkimme mahdollisuuksia k\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 uusia indikaattoreita yliopiston vaikuttavuuden, tutkimuksen ja avoimen tieteen arvioinnissa ja tietojohtamisessa. Erityisesti tarkastelimme avoimen julkaisemisen ja avoimen toimintakulttuurin indikaattoreita.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Selvitimme, miten v\u00e4hemm\u00e4n k\u00e4ytettyj\u00e4 julkaisujen indikaattoreita, kuten kotimaisia, monikielisi\u00e4 ja\/tai suurelle yleis\u00f6lle suunnattuja yleistajuisia julkaisuja, voitaisiin hy\u00f6dynt\u00e4\u00e4 tutkimuksen avoimuuden ja yhteiskunnallisen vaikuttavuuden seurannassa. Samalla kartoitimme, mit\u00e4 ja miten vertaisarviointia, asiantuntijateht\u00e4vi\u00e4, kansalaistiedeprojekteja ja muita tutkimusaktiviteetteja voitaisiin hy\u00f6dynt\u00e4\u00e4 yliopiston avoimen tieteen ja toimintakulttuurin seurannassa. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tutkimuksen ja avoimen tieteen arvioinnissa laajasti k\u00e4ytetyt julkaisum\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4t ja viittausluvut ovat pitk\u00e4lti tieteellisen yhteis\u00f6n sis\u00e4isi\u00e4 mittareita, kun taas v\u00e4hemm\u00e4n k\u00e4ytetyt tutkimustoiminnan indikaattorit voisivat tuoda esiin tutkimuksen yhteiskunnallisen vaikuttavuuden potentiaalia. Avoimuus ja yleistajuistaminen edist\u00e4v\u00e4t tieteellisen tiedon k\u00e4ytt\u00f6\u00e4 koulutuksen eri tasoilla, elinkeinoel\u00e4m\u00e4ss\u00e4, viranomaistoiminnassa ja poliittisessa p\u00e4\u00e4t\u00f6ksenteossa. Pilottitutkimuksessamme k\u00e4ytimme UEFin tutkimustietoj\u00e4rjestelm\u00e4\u00e4 UEF-CRISi\u00e4 esimerkkin\u00e4 siit\u00e4, miten CRIS-dataa voitaisiin hy\u00f6dynt\u00e4\u00e4 uudella tavalla ja millaista uutta dataa voitaisiin tulevaisuudessa ker\u00e4t\u00e4, k\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 ja kehitt\u00e4\u00e4. Lue tarkemmin englanninkielisest\u00e4 <a href=\"https:\/\/graspos.eu\/inside-stories-from-the-pilot-studies-novel-methods-2-in-responsible-research-assessment-and-open-science-evaluation-at-the-university-of-eastern-finland\">haastattelusta<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Vuonna 2023 sukelsimme yhteiskunnallisesta vuorovaikutuksesta kertovaan dataan<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Ty\u00f6 pilottitutkimuksemme parissa k\u00e4ynnistyi konkreettisesti elokuussa 2023. Saimme TSV:lt\u00e4 suomalaisten yliopistojen julkaisuaktiviteetteja vuosilta 2020\u20132022 sis\u00e4lt\u00e4neen tiedoston, joka oli koottu kansallisesta VIRTA-tietovarannosta ja muokattu TSV:n tutkimustarpeisiin. Tutkimme tiedostoa SPSS-ohjelmalla saadaksemme kuvan sen sis\u00e4ll\u00f6st\u00e4 ja k\u00e4ytt\u00f6mahdollisuuksista pilotissamme. Alkuvaiheen kokeiluissa tuotimme listauksia ja ristiintaulukointeja UEFin sek\u00e4 muiden suomalaisten yliopistojen julkaisutoiminnasta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pilottimme keskeisen\u00e4 tavoitteena oli kehitt\u00e4\u00e4 avoimen tieteen arviointimenetelmi\u00e4 UEFin tapausesimerkin pohjalta. Monissa tutkimuksissa on todettu perinteisten l\u00e4hdeviittausten laskemiseen perustuvien bibliometristen indikaattoreiden olevan riitt\u00e4m\u00e4tt\u00f6mi\u00e4 ja usein v\u00e4\u00e4rink\u00e4ytettyj\u00e4 vastuullisessa arvioinnissa. Mietimme, mit\u00e4 uutta voisimme kehitt\u00e4\u00e4 t\u00e4ydent\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n perinteist\u00e4 metriikkaa kestoltaan ja resursseiltaan rajallisessa pilottitutkimuksessamme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.finlex.fi\/fi\/lainsaadanto\/2009\/558\">Yliopistolaki 558\/2009<\/a> edellytt\u00e4\u00e4 yliopistoilta yhteiskunnallista vuorovaikutusta. Yliopistojen tulee my\u00f6s edist\u00e4\u00e4 tutkimustulosten yhteiskunnallista vaikuttavuutta. Nostimme pilottitutkimuksemme keskipisteeksi avoimen tieteen yhteiskunnallisen vaikuttavuuden. Otimme VIRTA-datan lis\u00e4ksi tarkasteluun UEF-CRISin. Sielt\u00e4 l\u00f6ysimme sis\u00e4lt\u00f6\u00e4, jota ei ker\u00e4t\u00e4 kansalliseen VIRTAan eik\u00e4 <a href=\"https:\/\/tiedejatutkimus.fi\/fi\/\">Tiedejatutkimus.fi<\/a>-portaaliin, mutta jolla voisi olla merkityst\u00e4 avoimen tieteen yhteiskunnallisessa vaikuttavuudessa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kyseess\u00e4 ovat monien tutkijoiden toteuttamat tiedeyhteis\u00f6n ulkopuoliset yhteiskunnalliset aktiviteetit. T\u00e4llaisia ovat esimerkiksi erilaiset yleis\u00f6- ja asiantuntijaluennot, mediaesiintymiset, tieteen popularisointi ja kansalaistiedeprojektit. Yliopistolain ohjeistuksesta huolimatta ei aktiviteetteja t\u00e4ll\u00e4 hetkell\u00e4 virallisesti huomioida yliopiston tuloksellisuuden arvioinnissa. T\u00e4st\u00e4 syyst\u00e4 niit\u00e4 ei tallenneta systemaattisesti tutkimustietoj\u00e4rjestelmiin eik\u00e4 my\u00f6sk\u00e4\u00e4n vied\u00e4 kansallisiin tietoj\u00e4rjestelmiin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pohdimme, voisimmeko nostaa aktiviteettien painoarvoa kehitt\u00e4m\u00e4ll\u00e4 niille helposti laskettavan indikaattorin. Otimme mukaan tarkasteluun my\u00f6s VIRTA-tiedostosta l\u00f6yt\u00e4m\u00e4mme yleistajuiset ja ammatilliset julkaisut, jotka tavoittavat laajasti tiedeyhteis\u00f6n ulkopuolisia lukijoita. Toisistaan poikkeavien aineistotyyppien ottaminen mukaan johti ajatukseen <em>hybridi-indikaattorista<\/em>. Se kuvaa omalta osaltaan, miten tutkimus ja tutkijat n\u00e4kyv\u00e4t ja toivottavasti my\u00f6s vuorovaikuttavat yhteiskunnassa. Ajatuksemme oli, ett\u00e4 hybridi-indikaattori voisi jatkossa olla yksi osanen tutkimustoiminnan vastuullista arviointia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Vuonna 2024 kehitimme hybridi-indikaattorimallin<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>UEFin pilottitutkimuksessa vuoden 2024 hankety\u00f6ss\u00e4 keskityimme indikaattorimallin kehitt\u00e4miseen. Ty\u00f6 alkoi selvitt\u00e4m\u00e4ll\u00e4 UEF-CRISiin tallennettujen tutkimusaktiviteettien ja VIRTA-palveluun vietyjen yleistajuisten ja ammatillisten julkaisujen metadatojen sopivuutta uuden indikaattorin kehitt\u00e4misen tausta-aineistoiksi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Millaisen yhteiskunnallisesta aktiivisuudesta kertovan tarinan aineistot voivat tarjota?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Millaisella tasolla aineistoja on j\u00e4rkev\u00e4\u00e4 tarkastella?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ent\u00e4 miten mahdolliset virhetulkinnat voidaan est\u00e4\u00e4?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Meid\u00e4n tuli huomioida, ett\u00e4 tutkimusaktiviteettien tallentaminen CRISiin ei ole vakiintunut k\u00e4yt\u00e4nt\u00f6, eik\u00e4 k\u00e4yt\u00f6ss\u00e4mme oleva aineisto siksi vastaa todellista, oikeassa el\u00e4m\u00e4ss\u00e4 toteutuneiden yhteiskunnallisten aktiviteettien m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4\u00e4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1770\" height=\"1564\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.uef.fi\/ueflibrary\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2025\/10\/Blogikuva1.png\" alt=\"Piirroskuvassa henkil\u00f6 kysyy, miksi datasetit ovat eri vuosilta. Emme pilottitutkimuksessamme pyrkineet arvioimaan mit\u00e4\u00e4n yksitt\u00e4ist\u00e4 organisaatiota tai yksikk\u00f6\u00e4. K\u00e4ytimme UEF-CRIS- ja VIRTA-aineistoja vain pohjana hybridi-indikaattorimallin rakentamiselle. Aineistot vahvistivat hybridi-indikaattorimallin toteutettavuuden, vaikka alkuper\u00e4isten aineistojen t\u00e4ydellisess\u00e4 paikkansapit\u00e4vyydess\u00e4 olikin puutteita ja aineistojen ajanjaksot poikkesivat toisistaan.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Indikaattorin osalta ty\u00f6p\u00f6yd\u00e4llemme tuli my\u00f6s vaikuttavuuden mittaamisen problematiikka. Lannistumisen sijaan innostuimmekin pohtimaan huolella mahdollisuuksiamme kehitt\u00e4\u00e4 vaikuttavuuden saavuttamista kuvaavia indikaattoreita. On todettu, ett\u00e4 tietyt vuorovaikutustapahtumat edelt\u00e4v\u00e4t vaikuttavuuden saavuttamista (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.siampi.eu\/\">SIAMPI-projekti<\/a>). Koska UEF-CRIS- ja VIRTA-aineistoihin on tallennettu vuorovaikutustapahtumia, meid\u00e4n voisi olla vaikuttavuuden tutkimisen sijaan luontevampaa keskitty\u00e4 vuorovaikukseen. Tallennettuja vuorovaikutustapahtumia on mahdollista laskea yhteen ja numeerisista arvoista edelleen lasketut vuorovaikutusyritysten tasot sopivat yhteiskunnallista vuorovaikutusta kuvaaviksi indikaattoreiksi. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indikaattorin kehitt\u00e4misen tulokset voidaan lopulta jakaa kolmeen kokonaisuuteen:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Indikaattoreiden rakentamista ohjaava teoria ja kaavio<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Toistettavissa oleva ja skaalautuva indikaattoreiden laskentamenetelm\u00e4<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Esimerkinomaisia, havainnollistavia tuloksia (aineiston rajoitteet)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Koska GraspOS-hankkeessa teht\u00e4v\u00e4n\u00e4mme oli my\u00f6s pilotoida muun muassa olemassa olevia EOSC-palveluita, testasimme indikaattorimalliamme my\u00f6s <a href=\"https:\/\/graph.openaire.eu\/\">OpenAIRE Graphin<\/a> ja <a href=\"https:\/\/explore.openaire.eu\/\">OpenAIRE Exploren<\/a> UEFin aineistolla. Kansainv\u00e4liset aineistot voisivat jatkossa sopia t\u00e4ydent\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n indikaattorimalliamme, kunhan aineistoista tunnistetaan riitt\u00e4v\u00e4sti yhdist\u00e4misess\u00e4 tarvittavia tekij\u00f6it\u00e4 ja sis\u00e4ll\u00f6t sopivat yhteen yhteiskunnallisten aktiviteettiemme merkeiss\u00e4. N\u00e4ist\u00e4 tuloksista raportoimme suoraan hankkeen toteuttajille.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Vuonna 2025 haastattelimme yliopiston johtoa ja viestimme hybridi-indikaattorimallista<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Vuosi 2025 k\u00e4ynnistyi haastattelukierroksella. Haastattelimme yliopistomme johtoa yhteiskunnallisesta vaikuttavuudesta, yhteiskunnallisista aktiviteeteista, tutkimuksen arvioinnista ja avoimesta tieteest\u00e4. Haastateltavien rekrytointi onnistui yli odotustemme: saimme haastateltaviksemme kaikki yliopiston ja tiedekunnan johdon keskeiset edustajat, jotka olimme toivoneet tavoittavamme. T\u00e4m\u00e4 osoitti, ett\u00e4 GraspOS-projektin ja pilottitutkimuksemme teemat ovat sek\u00e4 ajankohtaisia ett\u00e4 merkityksellisi\u00e4 yliopiston johdolle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Totesimme yhdess\u00e4, ett\u00e4 teemamme on t\u00e4rke\u00e4 kaikilla tieteenaloilla; saimme itsekin muokata oletustamme siit\u00e4, ett\u00e4 yhteiskunnalliset aktiviteetit olisivat humanistisille aloille merkityksellisempi\u00e4 kuin luonnontieteiden aloille. Aktiivinen osallistuminen yhteiskunnan toimintaan n\u00e4htiin t\u00e4rke\u00e4n\u00e4 kaikilla aloilla. Johtajien haastattelut eiv\u00e4t ainoastaan tuottaneet arvokasta tietoa pilottitutkimustamme varten, vaan tarjosivat my\u00f6s erinomaisen tilaisuuden tiedottaa yliopiston johtoa GraspOS-hankkeessa tehdyst\u00e4 kehitt\u00e4misty\u00f6st\u00e4. Monet kiitokset kaikille haastatelluille antoisista keskusteluista!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hankkeen loppupuolella keskeisen\u00e4 hanketeht\u00e4v\u00e4n\u00e4 n\u00e4ytt\u00e4ytyi pilottihankkeemme l\u00f6yd\u00f6sten esitt\u00e4minen niin GraspOS-hankkeen raportoinnissa kuin kotimaisissa ja kansainv\u00e4lisiss\u00e4 seminaareissa ja konferensseissa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Kokeilimme aiheen kiinnostavuutta jo Reykjavikissa vuonna 2024 j\u00e4rjestetyss\u00e4 <a href=\"https:\/\/nwb2024.hi.is\/\">NWB2024<\/a> (<bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Nordic Workshop on Bibliometrics and Research Policy<\/bdo>) -konferessissa, jossa esittelimme hybridi-indikaattorimallin rakentamista posteriesityksess\u00e4mme. The project assessed, developed, and built infrastructure for a new generation of research metrics and indicators by producing data, tools, services, and guidelines in order to, among other things, expand the European Open Science Cloud ecosystem and improve monitoring services.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">From Finland, project partners included the Federation of Finnish Learned Societies (TSV) and CSC \u2013 IT Centre for Science, with the University of Eastern Finland (UEF) participating as an affiliate under CSC. UEF served as one of the project\u2019s nine pilot organisations and brought the perspective of a university conducting research to the work on research infrastructure. As part of the project activities, we also carried out a pilot study in the UEF, in which we evaluated and developed new methods for responsible research assessment and the monitoring of open science.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">In UEF\u2019s development work, we analysed research activities<\/bdo><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">In the UEF pilot, our aim was to identify innovative ways to promote open science. We analysed and assessed less commonly used open science indicators, exploring the potential of applying new indicators in the evaluation of a university\u2019s impact, research, and open science, as well as in knowledge management. In particular, we examined the indicators of open publishing and open research culture.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We investigated how less-used publication indicators \u2013 such as domestic, multilingual, and\/or popular science publications aimed at the general public \u2013 could be utilised in monitoring research openness and societal impact. At the same time, we mapped out how peer review, expert tasks, citizen science projects, and other research activities could be applied in monitoring a university\u2019s open science and open research culture.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">While publication counts and citation numbers, which are widely used in the assessment of research and open science, are largely internal metrics within the scientific community, less-used indicators of research activities could highlight the potential for societal impact the research has. Openness and popularisation foster the use of scientific knowledge at all levels of education, in business and industry, in public administration, and in political decision-making. In our pilot study, we used UEF\u2019s research information system, UEF CRIS, as an example of how CRIS data could be utilised in new ways, as well as what new data could be collected, used, and developed in the future. Read more in <a href=\"https:\/\/graspos.eu\/inside-stories-from-the-pilot-studies-novel-methods-2-in-responsible-research-assessment-and-open-science-evaluation-at-the-university-of-eastern-finland\">this interview<\/a>.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">In 2023, we dived into data on societal engagement<\/bdo><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The practical work on our pilot study began in August 2023. We received from the Federation of Finnish Learned Societies (TSV) a file containing information on the publication activities of Finnish universities from 2020\u20132022, which was compiled from the national VIRTA data repository and adapted to TSV\u2019s research needs. We examined the file using the SPSS software to gain an understanding of its contents and potential uses in our pilot. In our initial tests, we produced lists and cross\u2011tabulations of publication activities at UEF and other Finnish universities.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">A key goal in our pilot was to develop assessment methods for open science, using UEF as a case example. Many studies have found that traditional bibliometric indicators based on citation counts are inadequate and often misused in responsible assessment. We considered what new approaches we could create to complement traditional metrics within the time and resource constraints of our pilot.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finlex.fi\/en\/legislation\/2009\/558\">the Universities Act 558\/2009<\/a>, universities are required to engage with society. They must also promote the societal impact of research results. Thus, we made the societal impact of open science the central focus of our pilot study. Alongside VIRTA data, we also examined UEF CRIS, wherein we found content that is not collected in the national VIRTA repository or <a href=\"https:\/\/research.fi\/en\/\">the Research.fi<\/a> portal, but which could be relevant for the societal impact of open science.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">This content consists of societal activities carried out by many researchers outside the academic community. Examples include public and expert lectures, media appearances, science popularisation, and citizen science projects. Despite the guidelines in the Universities Act, such activities are currently not officially considered in evaluating a university\u2019s performance. For this reason, they are not systematically recorded in research information systems nor transferred to national information systems.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We pondered whether these activities could be given greater prominence by developing an easily calculable indicator for them. In our examination. we also included professional and popularised publications identified in the VIRTA file, which reach a broad audience beyond the scientific community. Including these differing data types led to the idea of a hybrid indicator \u2013 one that, in its own way, illustrates how research and researchers are visible in, and hopefully engage with, society. Our thinking included the idea that, in future, such a hybrid indicator could form one component of the responsible assessment of research activities.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">In 2024, we developed the hybrid indicator model<\/bdo><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">In UEF\u2019s pilot study, the project work in 2024 focused on developing the aforementioned indicator model. We began by examining whether the metadata of research activities recorded in UEF CRIS and of popular science and professional publications transferred to the VIRTA service would be suitable as background material for developing the new indicator.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">What kind of story about societal activity can the datasets offer?<\/bdo><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">At what level is it reasonable to examine the datasets?<\/bdo><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">And how can possible misinterpretations be prevented?<\/bdo><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n&lt;p<bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">&gt;We had to take into account that recording research activities in CRIS is not an established practice, and therefore the data available to us does not reflect the actual number of societal activities that have taken place in real life.\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1770\" height=\"1564\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.uef.fi\/ueflibrary\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2025\/10\/Blogimage1.png\" alt=\"In the illustration, a person asks why the datasets are from different years. We used the UEF CRIS and VIRTA datasets solely as a basis for building the hybrid indicator model. The datasets confirmed the feasibility of the hybrid indicator model, even though the original datasets were imperfect in terms of complete accuracy and had differing time spans from one another.<em> <\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Regarding the indicator, we also encountered the challenges of measuring impact itself. Instead of being discouraged, we were excited to carefully consider our possibilities for developing indicators that describe how the impact is achieved. It has been noted that certain interactions precede the attainment of impact (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.siampi.eu\/\">SIAMPI project<\/a>). Since UEF CRIS and VIRTA datasets include recorded interactions, it was more natural for us to focus on interaction rather than directly on impact in our research. The recorded interactions can be added up, and the interaction levels calculated from those numerical values are suitable as indicators describing societal engagement.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The results of developing the indicator can ultimately be divided into three main components:<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Theory and diagram guiding the construction of the indicators<\/bdo><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Repeatable and scalable calculation method for the indicators<\/bdo><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Example illustrative results (dataset limitations)<\/bdo><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">As part of our tasks in the GraspOS project, we were also to pilot, among other things, existing EOSC services. We tested our indicator model using a UEF dataset in both <a href=\"https:\/\/graph.openaire.eu\/\">OpenAIRE Graph<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/explore.openaire.eu\/\">OpenAIRE Explore<\/a>. International datasets could complement our indicator model in the future, provided that enough elements required for merging datasets are identified and that the contents align with the nature of the societal activities. We reported these results directly to the project implementers.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">In 2025, we interviewed our university\u2019s leaders and shared our findings on the hybrid indicator model<\/bdo><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The year 2025 began with a series of interviews. We interviewed our university\u2019s leadership on societal impact, societal activities, research assessment, and open science. Recruitment of interviewees exceeded our expectations: we secured interviews with all the key representatives of the university and faculty leadership we had hoped to reach. This demonstrated that the themes of the GraspOS project and our pilot study are both timely and relevant to the university\u2019s leadership.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Together we concluded that our theme is important across all disciplines; we ourselves adjusted our assumption that societal activities would be more relevant to the humanities than to the natural sciences. Active participation in societal activities was seen as important in all fields. The leaders\u2019 interviews not only provided valuable data for our pilot study but also offered an excellent opportunity to inform the university\u2019s leadership about the development work carried out in the GraspOS project. Sincere thanks to all interviewees for the enriching and thought-provoking discussions!<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Towards the end of the project, a key task was to present the findings of our pilot both in the GraspOS project reporting and in domestic and international seminars and conferences.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We tested the interest in our topic already in Reykjavik at the <a href=\"https:\/\/nwb2024.hi.is\/\">NWB2024<\/a> (Nordic Workshop on Bibliometrics and Research Policy) conference in 2024, where we presented the construction of the hybrid indicator model in our poster presentation. Our poster is available on Zenodo: <a href=\"https:\/\/zenodo.org\/records\/14045124\">Hybrid Indicator for Responsible Research Assessment and Open Science Evaluation<\/a>.<\/bdo><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We shared information about our hybrid indicator in March 2025 at the <a href=\"https:\/\/avointiede.fi\/en\/events\/graspos-benefits-finnish-organisations\">EOSC Finnish Forum webinar<\/a>. Our presentation is available on the event page and on Zenodo: <a href=\"https:\/\/zenodo.org\/records\/15267458\">GraspOS Benefits to Finnish Organisations<\/a>.<\/bdo><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">CSC project participants presented GraspOS development work and the hybrid indicator model to representatives of the Ministry of Education and Culture in a meeting between CSC and OKM in April 2025.<\/bdo><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We took part in the <a href=\"https:\/\/events.tuni.fi\/rsd2025-en\/\">Research Service Days in Tampere in August 2025<\/a>: <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><\/ul><\/bdo>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"color: initial;font-size: 1.125rem\">We presented the results of our interviews in a joint oral presentation by the YUFERING and GraspOS projects: <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 1.125rem\" href=\"https:\/\/events.tuni.fi\/app\/uploads\/sites\/1313\/2025\/08\/tutkimuspalvelupaivat_maria-pietila-ja-katri-rintamaki-18.8.2025.pdf\">Avoin tiede osana tutkijanarviointia<\/a><span style=\"color: initial;font-size: 1.125rem\"> (in Finnish).<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: initial;font-size: 1.125rem\"><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We explored the calculation model of our hybrid indicator, with example results, in a poster presentation. In our article, \u201cDeveloping novel indicators for verifying societal interactions of open science\u201d, we present the background of the hybrid indicator, the calculation methodology, and our example results, along with comprehensive reflections.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">In addition, we are writing a professional article about the results and insights that came from the GraspOS project work, in collaboration with TSV and CSC. The timeframe for the publication has been more or less fluid, so stay tuned!<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The GraspOS project will conclude at the end of 2025. We have collaborated with our European colleagues to develop European research infrastructure, responsible research assessment, and open science.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">GraspOS project participants have met regularly in various meeting configurations online. Our UEF pilot has been part of the pilots\u2019 WP5 work package, and we have met monthly in pilot participant meetings. Participants from all project work packages have met every two months in <em>All-Hands Bi-Monthly<\/em> meetings. The project\u2019s communications team has brought participants together virtually via the <a href=\"https:\/\/graspos.eu\/\">project website<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/graspos.eu\/newsletters\">newsletter<\/a>. On the website, you can, among other things, read <a href=\"https:\/\/graspos.eu\/inside-stories-from-the-pilot-studies\">interviews<\/a> with all pilot participants and watch <a href=\"https:\/\/graspos.eu\/training-material\">recordings of the project\u2019s webinars<\/a>.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">In addition to official meetings, we have also formed informal groups and gatherings. Among Finnish project participants, CSC, TSV, and UEF, we have met in order to exchange timely updates and on separate occasions as needed. Our UEF pilot team has met weekly, most often face-to-face.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The project\u2019s collaboration was not based solely on remote meetings. Annual project meetings were held as hybrid events in Athens in January 2023, in Leiden in January 2024, and in Bologna in May 2025. The pilot participants gathered for an face-to-face meeting in Espoo in November 2023, and together with OpenAIRE representatives in Athens in May 2024.
