Hi! My name is Milja, and I\u2019ve started my internship at the Joensuu Campus Library in early August. My internship will last for five months. For me, library was a natural choice for an internship, as I\u2019m studying library and information services at Sein\u00e4joki University of Applied Sciences.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n I\u2019ve taken a few wrong turns before I began studying library and information services. Literature and reading have always been very dear hobbies for me, and I\u2019ve been a frequent visitor to the city library since I was a child. Still, it took me quite a while to realise that it is possible to study library and information services in Finland. I like to say that my experiences with higher education have somewhat followed the fairytale \u2018Goldilocks and the Three Bears\u2019: my first choice was too much in one direction (fashion and costuming), the second was too much in the other direction (art history) and the third, current choice is just right (library and information services).<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n I chose to apply for an internship at the Joensuu Campus Library partially because Joensuu is my hometown where I was born and grew up. This means that I\u2019ll only need to learn where to find everything in a new library, and not in the city itself as well. In addition, my studies have focused mainly on how a public library operates, and I felt like this internship was my best chance to see what it is like to work in a university library. It\u2019s nice to be able to learn at least a little bit about both types of libraries, since I have no set opinions on whether I\u2019d rather work in a public library or a university library after graduation. The most important thing is that I will get to work in a library.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n Five months is a rather long period for an internship, and thus the schedule for my internship is wide-ranging and packed with all types of interesting tasks and talks. It\u2019s exciting to have the opportunity to try my hands in practice with things that have been only spoken about in my studies, and of course to be able to learn new things specific to this library.
