Avoin oppiminen voidaan n\u00e4hd\u00e4 merkitt\u00e4v\u00e4n\u00e4 osana yliopiston yhteiskunnallista vuorovaikutusta, ja UEFin tavoitteena onkin toimia avoimen oppimisen edist\u00e4j\u00e4n\u00e4, niin kansallisesti kuin kansainv\u00e4lisestikin. Lokakuussa 2024 julkaistut <a href=\"https:\/\/tiedejatutkimus.fi\/fi\/science-innovation-policy\/open-science-and-research-indicators\">kansalliset avoimen tieteen ja tutkimuksen seurannan tulokset<\/a> toivat UEFille mukavia uutisia: Oppimisen avoimuuden tasomme nousi kahdessa vuodessa merkitt\u00e4v\u00e4sti, siirtyen viisiportaisella asteikolla tasolta 2 (2022) tasolle 4 (2024). T\u00e4m\u00e4n kehityksen taustalla on erityisesti vuoden 2024 alussa voimaan tullut <a href=\"https:\/\/studentuef.sharepoint.com\/:b:\/s\/www-documents\/EbzN4KvgqJZJoDqyBJHGRX4Bv4EOy7XzylKuV2ejJqnXfg?e=7j4sSg\">UEF avoimen tieteen ja tutkimuksen linjaus<\/a>, joka kattaa my\u00f6s keskeisi\u00e4 avoimen oppimisen teemoja. Jotta pysymme t\u00e4ll\u00e4 tiell\u00e4 jatkossakin, tarvitsemme lis\u00e4\u00e4 k\u00e4yt\u00e4nn\u00f6n toimenpiteit\u00e4 oppimisen avoimuuden edist\u00e4miseen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Avointen oppimateriaalien avulla jokaisella on maksutta mahdollisuus oppia uutta ja kerrata vanhaa omaan tahtiinsa. Avoimet oppimateriaalit eiv\u00e4t sin\u00e4ll\u00e4\u00e4n ole uusia asia, vaan osa UEFin opettajista on tuottanut avoimia oppimateriaaleja jo vuosia. Haasteena sen sijaan on, ett\u00e4 oppimateriaalit ovat hajallaan eri palveluissa, jolloin niiden l\u00f6yt\u00e4minen ja hy\u00f6dynt\u00e4minen on hankalaa. Esimerkiksi eri kehitt\u00e4mishankkeissa tuotetuille avoimesti k\u00e4ytett\u00e4v\u00e4ksi tarkoitetuille materiaaleille tarvitaan paikka, jossa hankeaineistot on koottu yhteen ja niit\u00e4 voidaan k\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 hankekauden j\u00e4lkeenkin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">UEFissa on k\u00e4yt\u00f6ss\u00e4 avoimen julkaisemisen v\u00e4lineit\u00e4, muttei alustaa, johon avoimet oppimateriaalit kootaan<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Tietyt kansalliset palvelut, kuten <a href=\"https:\/\/aoe.fi\/#\/etusivu\">Avointen oppimateriaalien kirjasto<\/a> ja pian avautuva <a href=\"https:\/\/digivisio2030.fi\/opin\/\">Opin.fi<\/a>, auttavat oppimateriaalien jakelussa, mutta eiv\u00e4t sovi oppimateriaalien tuottamiseen. Avointen oppimateriaalien kirjastosta oppimateriaalien kuvailutiedot siirtyv\u00e4t my\u00f6s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finna.fi\/\">Finna-palveluun<\/a>. L\u00f6ydett\u00e4vyys Finnassa on sin\u00e4ll\u00e4\u00e4n hyv\u00e4, mutta kuinka moni tosiasiassa etsii sielt\u00e4 juuri UEFissa tuotettua oppimateriaalia? Oma lukunsa ovat my\u00f6s YouTubessa julkaistut videot ja podcasteina tuotetut oppimateriaalit. Kuinka n\u00e4m\u00e4 saadaan kartoitettua ja helpotettua niiden l\u00f6yt\u00e4mist\u00e4?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UEFissa k\u00e4yt\u00f6ss\u00e4 olevista palveluista muun muassa eLearn Moodle, Panopto ja DigiCampus tarjoavat hyv\u00e4n alustan erityyppisten oppimateriaalien tuottamiseen ja k\u00e4ytt\u00e4miseen, mutta p\u00e4\u00e4s\u00e4\u00e4nt\u00f6isesti oppimateriaalit ovat vain UEFin tai muiden kirjautuneiden k\u00e4ytt\u00e4jien saatavissa. Interaktiivisten kuvien tuottamiseen UEFilla k\u00e4yt\u00f6ss\u00e4 oleva ThingLink on ollut toimiva ja sen kautta luotuja kuvia ja oppimateriaaleja on ollut helppo tuoda usealle eri alustalle joko linkkein\u00e4 tai upotuksina. T\u00e4m\u00e4 onkin yksi avoimen oppimateriaalin etu: Voit k\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 yht\u00e4 avoimesti julkaisemaasi oppimateriaalia esimerkiksi usealla opintojaksolla. Riitt\u00e4\u00e4, ett\u00e4 p\u00e4ivit\u00e4t ja yll\u00e4pid\u00e4t oppimateriaalia vain yhdess\u00e4 paikassa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UEFin kirjastossa avoimia oppimateriaaleja on tuotettu p\u00e4\u00e4s\u00e4\u00e4nt\u00f6isesti WordPress-alustalle (esim. <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.uef.fi\/tiedonhaku-kirjasto\/\">Tiedonhakijan opas<\/a>). WordPressin hyvi\u00e4 puolia ovat monipuolisuus, t\u00e4ysi avoimuus sek\u00e4 hakukonel\u00f6ydett\u00e4vyys. Toisaalta WordPressin k\u00e4ytt\u00f6\u00f6notto saattaa tuntua hankalalta ja alusta toimii parhaiten laajempien oppimateriaalien tekemisess\u00e4 ja julkaisemisessa. Oppimateriaalituotannon v\u00e4lineen\u00e4 WordPress ei ainakaan oman kokemuksemme mukaan ole yleisesti k\u00e4ytetty kirjaston ulkopuolella. Alustana se ei my\u00f6sk\u00e4\u00e4n nykymuodossaan ratkaise oppimateriaalien l\u00f6ydett\u00e4vyyden ongelmaa; sit\u00e4, ett\u00e4 oppimateriaalit ovat koottuina yhteen paikkaan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UEFin tarjoamilla sis\u00e4ll\u00f6ntuotannon ty\u00f6kaluilla on mahdollista tuottaa laadukkaita oppimateriaaleja, vaikka kaikki tarjotut v\u00e4lineet eiv\u00e4t v\u00e4ltt\u00e4m\u00e4tt\u00e4 olisikaan suoraan niit\u00e4 varten kehitetty. Ongelmaksi tulee kuitenkin oppimateriaalien l\u00f6ydett\u00e4vyys ja se, miten koko yliopiston avoimet oppimateriaalit saataisiin koottua yhteen paikkaan. Yksi huomioitava tekij\u00e4 on my\u00f6s oppimateriaalien laajuus. Olisi hyv\u00e4 olla yhteinen julkaisupaikka eri formaateissa julkaistuille ja erilaajuisille oppimateriaaleille. Esimerkiksi DigiCampus toimii opintojaksojen tuottamisessa, mutta itsen\u00e4isten oppimateriaalien avaamiseen se ei sovellu. Mielenkiinnolla odotamme, miten Opin.fi vastaa t\u00e4h\u00e4n tarpeeseen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oma avointen oppimateriaalien alusta mahdollistaisi UEFin avointen oppimateriaalien kokoamisen, tuottamisen ja julkaisemisen yhdess\u00e4 paikassa. N\u00e4in oppimateriaalit olisivat helposti kaikkien l\u00f6ydett\u00e4viss\u00e4 ja hy\u00f6dynnett\u00e4viss\u00e4 esimerkiksi siten, ett\u00e4 erityyppiset oppimateriaalit olisi jaettu alustalla eri teemoihin ja niit\u00e4 voisi my\u00f6s hakea esimerkiksi sis\u00e4lt\u00f6\u00e4, tieteenalaa tai teemaa kuvailevilla sanoilla.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hyv\u00e4 oppimateriaalien alusta on monipuolinen, ohjaava, varmatoiminen ja helposti k\u00e4ytett\u00e4v\u00e4<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Kirjasto haluaa edist\u00e4\u00e4 oppimisen avoimuutta tarjoamalla opettajille ja oppijoille tukea ja toimivan infrastruktuurin avointen oppimateriaalien tuottamiseen ja k\u00e4ytt\u00e4miseen. Osana t\u00e4t\u00e4 tavoitetta kirjaston ja digipalveluiden yhteisty\u00f6ss\u00e4 on vuosina 2024\u20132025 tehty esiselvityst\u00e4 mahdollisuudesta hankkia UEFille digitaalinen julkaisu- ja tallennusalusta. Sen avulla UEFin opettajat voisivat tuottaa ja julkaista omia oppimateriaalejaan paitsi UEFin opiskelijoiden, my\u00f6s muiden oppijoiden avoimesti k\u00e4ytett\u00e4viksi. Halusimme kuulla mahdollisten k\u00e4ytt\u00e4jien mietteit\u00e4 avointen oppimateriaalien alustasta sek\u00e4 avoimesta oppimisesta yleisesti, joten toteutimme syksyll\u00e4 2024 palvelumuotoiluty\u00f6pajan ja verkkokyselyn. Molempiin kutsuttiin osallistujiksi koko UEF-yhteis\u00f6\u00e4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ty\u00f6pajaty\u00f6skentelyss\u00e4 tunnistettiin erilaisia rooleja ja tarpeita<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Syyskuiseen kahden tunnin mittaiseen palvelumuotoiluty\u00f6pajaan osallistui l\u00e4hes kaksikymment\u00e4 opettajaa eri tiedekunnista ja palveluista. Ty\u00f6pajan vet\u00e4j\u00e4n\u00e4 toimi jatkuvan oppimisen asiantuntija Sanna Soppela. Yhdess\u00e4 kokosimme alustaan liittyvi\u00e4 k\u00e4ytt\u00e4j\u00e4tarpeita ja -toiveita ja tunnistimme erilaisia k\u00e4ytt\u00e4j\u00e4profiileja.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ty\u00f6pajassa pohdimme my\u00f6s osallistujien omaa roolia avointen oppimateriaalien alustan k\u00e4ytt\u00e4jin\u00e4, avointen oppimateriaalien alustan hy\u00f6tyj\u00e4 ja t\u00e4rkeimpi\u00e4 ominaisuuksia sek\u00e4 nykyisten alustaratkaisujen mahdollisuuksia. Palvelumuotoiluty\u00f6pajassa tunnistettiin nelj\u00e4 keskeist\u00e4 k\u00e4ytt\u00e4j\u00e4profiilia: sis\u00e4ll\u00f6ntuottaja, -hy\u00f6dynt\u00e4j\u00e4, -k\u00e4ytt\u00e4j\u00e4 ja avoimiin oppimateriaaleihin tutustuva tulokas. N\u00e4ist\u00e4 tarkempaan pohdintaan otettiin sis\u00e4ll\u00f6ntuottaja (vrt. opettajat) ja sis\u00e4ll\u00f6n k\u00e4ytt\u00e4j\u00e4 (vrt. hy\u00f6dynt\u00e4j\u00e4t, oppijat), joiden tarpeita heijastellen t\u00e4rkeimmiksi oppimateriaalin alustan ominaisuuksiksi saatiin:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>helppok\u00e4ytt\u00f6isyys ja intuitiivisuus<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ajantasaisuus ja helppo p\u00e4ivitett\u00e4vyys<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>aito avoimuus<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>monipuolisten formaattien tuki<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>saavutettavuus ja kielivalinnat<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Erillisess\u00e4 validointitapaamisessa edell\u00e4 mainitut teemat laitettiin t\u00e4rkeysj\u00e4rjestykseen (Kuva 1). Millaiseen j\u00e4rjestykseen sin\u00e4 laittaisit ty\u00f6pajassa nimetyt avointen oppimateriaalien ominaisuudet? Ent\u00e4 mitk\u00e4 n\u00e4ist\u00e4 ominaisuuksista hy\u00f6dytt\u00e4isiv\u00e4t my\u00f6s avointen oppimateriaalien pariin juuri tullutta tulokasta?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1913\" height=\"968\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.uef.fi\/ueflibrary\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2025\/03\/pamu_kuva.png\" alt=\"Ty\u00f6pajassa todettiin, ett\u00e4 seuraavat avointen oppimateriaalien alustan ominaisuudet olisivat t\u00e4rkeimm\u00e4t (t\u00e4rkeimm\u00e4st\u00e4 v\u00e4hiten t\u00e4rke\u00e4\u00e4n): 1) helppok\u00e4ytt\u00f6isyys ja rakenteen selkeys, 2) monipuolinen sis\u00e4ll\u00f6ntuotanto, 3) l\u00f6ydett\u00e4vyys, 4) aito avoimuus, ei kirjautumista, 5) materiaalin ajantasaisuus, 6) toimiminen eri laitteilla ja k\u00e4ytt\u00f6j\u00e4rjestelmill\u00e4, 7) saavutettavuus ja kieliversiot, 8) visuaalisuus.\" class=\"wp-image-22840\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.uef.fi\/ueflibrary\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2025\/03\/pamu_kuva.png 1913w, https:\/\/blogs.uef.fi\/ueflibrary\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2025\/03\/pamu_kuva-1250x633.png 1250w, https:\/\/blogs.uef.fi\/ueflibrary\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2025\/03\/pamu_kuva-151x76.png 151w, https:\/\/blogs.uef.fi\/ueflibrary\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2025\/03\/pamu_kuva-768x389.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.uef.fi\/ueflibrary\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2025\/03\/pamu_kuva-1536x777.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1913px) 100vw, 1913px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Ty\u00f6pajan tuliaisina todettiin, ett\u00e4 oppimateriaalien alustalta kaivataan ennen kaikkea helppok\u00e4ytt\u00f6isyytt\u00e4 ja selkeytt\u00e4, mahdollisuuksia monipuoliseen sis\u00e4ll\u00f6ntuotantoon ja hyv\u00e4\u00e4 l\u00f6ydett\u00e4vyytt\u00e4.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Oppijat toivovat, ett\u00e4 UEFin avoimet oppimateriaalit l\u00f6ytyv\u00e4t yhdest\u00e4 paikasta<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Lokakuussa toteutettuun avoimen oppimisen kyselyyn saatiin 39 vastausta. Vastaajista noin puolet oli opiskelijoita (21) ja puolet henkil\u00f6kuntaa (18). Vastaajia oli varsin tasaisesti kaikista UEFin tiedekunnista sek\u00e4 jatkuvan oppimisen keskuksesta, ja lis\u00e4ksi muista yksik\u00f6ist\u00e4. Avoimia oppimateriaaleja k\u00e4sittelev\u00e4ss\u00e4 kyselyss\u00e4 kysyttiin muun muassa, mist\u00e4 vastaajat etsiv\u00e4t avoimia oppimateriaaleja, mill\u00e4 tavoin ja mille k\u00e4ytt\u00e4j\u00e4ryhmille he ovat tuottaneet avoimia oppimateriaaleja, miten ja mihin tarkoituksiin he haluaisivat hy\u00f6dynt\u00e4\u00e4 avointen oppimateriaalien alustaa, ja mit\u00e4 he toivoisivat alustalta ja avoimen oppimisen tukipalveluilta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Poimimme t\u00e4h\u00e4n blogitekstiin kahden avointen oppimateriaalien ominaisuuksia koskevan kysymyksen TOP-5-vastaukset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mitk\u00e4 ominaisuudet ovat mielest\u00e4si t\u00e4rkeimpi\u00e4 avoimen oppimateriaalin k\u00e4ytt\u00e4j\u00e4lle (oppijalle)? (Valitse 1\u20135 t\u00e4rkeint\u00e4.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>UEFin kaikki avoimet oppimateriaalit saa samasta paikasta (29 vastaajaa)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Erilaisten oppijoiden ja oppimistyylien huomiointi (17 vastaajaa)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Palvelun hakutoiminnot, esim. avainsanat, luokitukset, haku (16 vastaajaa)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Oppimateriaaleja voi k\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 kirjautumatta (15 vastaajaa)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Aktivoivat elementit, esim. kyselyt, \u00e4\u00e4nestykset, automaattitarkisteiset teht\u00e4v\u00e4t (14 vastaajaa)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Mitk\u00e4 ominaisuudet ovat mielest\u00e4si t\u00e4rkeimpi\u00e4 avoimen oppimateriaalin tuottajalle? DOI, URN, Handle (11 vastaajaa)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Alustan k\u00e4ytt\u00f6 eri organisaatioiden kesken (10 vastaajaa)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Suurten k\u00e4ytt\u00e4j\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4rien yht\u00e4aikainen k\u00e4ytt\u00f6 (10 vastaajaa)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Saimme ilahduttavan paljon my\u00f6s sanallisia avovastauksia. Avoimien oppimateriaalien k\u00e4ytt\u00f6mahdollisuuksina ja etuina nostettiin esille seuraavia asioita (luettelon kohdat on koostettu samaan teemaan liittyvist\u00e4 erillisist\u00e4 vastauksista):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Avoimia oppimateriaaleja voi jakaa ja k\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 eri koulutustilanteissa, eri koulutustasoille ja ty\u00f6el\u00e4m\u00e4lle sek\u00e4 my\u00f6s poliittista keskustelua varten.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Oppimateriaalien tuottaminen yhteen paikkaan ja yhdell\u00e4 kertaa eri kohderyhmille s\u00e4\u00e4st\u00e4\u00e4 p\u00e4\u00e4llekk\u00e4iselt\u00e4 ty\u00f6lt\u00e4.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoimet oppimateriaalit toimivat virikkein\u00e4 sek\u00e4 lis\u00e4- ja tukimateriaaleina oppimisen tueksi opiskelijoille, jotka toivovat enemm\u00e4n opetusta kuin opintojakso tarjoaa.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoimia oppimateriaaleja voi tarjota opintoja harkitseville, jotka voivat niiden avulla pohtia opintoihin hakemista.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoimessa yliopistossa on tarve opiskelijoille tarjottaville orientaatio- ja opiskelutaitomateriaaleille, jotka olisivat ilmaiseksi ja avoimesti saatavilla jo silloin, kun oppija pohtii (maksullisten) avoimen opintojen aloittamista.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoimia oppimateriaaleja voi tuottaa, k\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 ja kehitt\u00e4\u00e4 yhteisty\u00f6ss\u00e4 toisen organisaation kanssa.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoimen oppimateriaalin avulla voi osallistua jatkuvan oppimisen kehitt\u00e4miseen, tuottaa pieni\u00e4 oppimiskokonaisuuksia tai MOOC-kursseja.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avointen oppimateriaalien tuottajana voi jakaa omaa osaamistaan ja meritoitua.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Hy\u00f6dynn\u00e4mme kyselyn kuulumisia ahkerasti avoimen oppimisen edist\u00e4misess\u00e4. Kiitos siis kaikille vastaajille uusien n\u00e4k\u00f6kulmien tuomisesta ty\u00f6mme tueksi!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Seuraavat askeleet<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>T\u00e4h\u00e4n menness\u00e4 avointen oppimateriaalien alustan esiselvityksess\u00e4 olemme kartoittaneet ja tutustuneet saatavilla oleviin avoimen oppimisen alustaratkaisuihin. Tarkoituksenamme on pilotoida muutamia alustaratkaisuja, ja ker\u00e4t\u00e4 pilotointien kautta lis\u00e4tietoa mahdollisen hankintap\u00e4\u00e4t\u00f6ksen pohjaksi. Open education can be seen as a significant aspect of the university&#8217;s societal interaction, and UEF aims to be a promoter of open learning both nationally and internationally. <a href=\"https:\/\/research.fi\/en\/science-innovation-policy\/open-science-and-research-indicators\">The results from national Monitoring of open science and research<\/a>, published in October 2024, brought good news for UEF: Our level of openness in learning increased significantly in two years, moving from level 2 (2022) to level 4 (2024) on a five-point scale. This development is particularly due to the <a href=\"https:\/\/studentuef.sharepoint.com\/:b:\/s\/www-documents\/ET44gm9uX6tAhY_u2VT4oCMB0k2H1InJbiTK5mg7iNT0hA?e=FCGoGe\">UEF open science and research policy<\/a> that came into effect at the beginning of 2024, which also covers key themes of open learning. To stay on this path, we need more practical measures to promote openness in learning.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">With open educational resources, everyone has the opportunity to learn new things and review old ones at their own pace, free of charge. Open educational resources are not a new concept; some UEF teachers have been producing open educational materials for years. The challenge, however, is that the materials are scattered across different services, making them difficult to find and utilize. For example, materials produced in various development projects intended for open use need a place where project materials are collected and can be used even after the project period.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">UEF has tools for open publishing but lacks a platform to compile open educational resources&nbsp;<\/bdo><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Certain national services, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/aoe.fi\/#\/etusivu\">Library of Open Educational Resources<\/a> and the upcoming <a href=\"https:\/\/digivisio2030.fi\/en\/opin\/\">Opin.fi<\/a>, help distribute educational resources but are not suitable for producing them. Descriptive information about educational materials from the Library of Open Educational Resources is also transferred to the national Finna service. While findability in Finna is good, but how many people search for materials produced specifically at UEF there? Another issue is the video material published on YouTube and educational material produced as podcasts. How can these be mapped and made easier to find?<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Among the services available at UEF, eLearn Moodle, Panopto, and DigiCampus offer good platforms for producing and using various types of educational materials, but these are mainly accessible to UEF or other registered users. ThingLink, used at UEF for producing interactive images, has been effective, and the images and educational materials created through it have been easy to bring to various platforms either as links or embeds. This is one advantage of open educational resources: You can use the same openly published material in multiple courses. All you have to do is update and maintain it in one place.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">In the UEF library, open educational resources have mainly been produced on the WordPress platform (e.g., the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.uef.fi\/tiedonhaku-kirjasto\/?lang=en\">Guide to Information Retrieval<\/a>). The advantages of WordPress are its versatility, full openness, and search engine findability. On the other hand, adopting WordPress may seem challenging, and the platform works best for creating and publishing more extensive educational materials. As a tool for producing educational materials, WordPress is not commonly used outside the library, at least in our experience. As a platform, it also does not currently solve the problem of findability of educational resources; that is, having the materials collected in one place.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">With the content production tools offered by UEF, it is possible to produce high-quality educational materials, even if not all the tools provided are directly developed for that purpose. However, the problem becomes the findability of educational resources and how to compile all the university&#8217;s open educational materials in one place. Another factor to consider is the scope of the educational materials. It would be good to have a common publication platform for materials published in different formats and of varying extents. For example, DigiCampus is suitable for producing courses but not for opening independent educational materials. We are eagerly awaiting how Opin.fi will address this need.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">A dedicated platform for open educational resources would enable the compilation, production, and publication of UEF&#8217;s open educational materials in one place. This way, the materials would be easily accessible and usable by everyone, for example, by categorizing different types of educational materials on the platform and allowing them to be searched by keywords describing the content, discipline, or theme.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">A good platform for educational resources is versatile, guiding, reliable, and easy to use<\/bdo><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The library aims to promote openness in learning by providing teachers and learners with support and a functional infrastructure for producing and using open educational materials. As part of this goal, the library and digital services have conducted a preliminary study in 2024\u20132025 on the possibility of acquiring a digital publishing and storage platform for UEF. This platform would allow UEF teachers to produce and publish their own educational resources for open use by both UEF students and other learners. We wanted to hear the thoughts of potential users about the platform for open educational resources and open learning in general, so we conducted a service design workshop and an online survey in the fall of 2024. The entire UEF community was invited to participate in both.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Identifying different roles and needs in workshop activities<\/bdo><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Nearly twenty teachers from various faculties and services participated in the two-hour service design workshop held in September. The workshop was led by Sanna Soppela, an expert in continuous learning. Together, we gathered user needs and wishes related to the platform and identified different user profiles.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">In the workshop, we also considered the participants&#8217; own roles as users of the open educational resources platform, the benefits and key features of the platform, and the possibilities of current platform solutions. Four key user profiles were identified in the service design workshop: content producer, content user, content consumer, and newcomer to open educational resources. Of these, the content producer (e.g., teachers) and content user (e.g., learners) were taken into more detailed consideration, and the most important features of the educational resources platform were identified based on their needs:<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Ease of use and intuitiveness<\/bdo><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Up-to-dateness and easy updatability<\/bdo><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Genuine openness<\/bdo><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Support for various formats<\/bdo><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Accessibility and language options<\/bdo><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">In a separate validation meeting, the above themes were further prioritized. The meeting concluded that the platform for educational resources needs to be, above all, easy to use and clear, offer opportunities for versatile content production, and have good findability.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Learners want UEF&#8217;s open educational resources to be found in one place<\/bdo><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The open education survey conducted in October received 39 responses. About half of the respondents were students (21) and half were staff (18). Respondents were fairly evenly distributed across all UEF faculties and the Center for Continuous Learning, as well as other units. The survey on open educational resources asked, among other things, where respondents search for open educational resources, how and for which user groups they have produced open educational resources, how and for what purposes they would like to use the open educational resources platform, and what they would like from the platform and from open education support services.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We have compiled the top 5 responses to two questions about the features of open educational resources for this blog post.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What features do you think are most important for a user (learner) of open educational resources? (Select 1\u20135 most important.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>All UEF&#8217;s open educational materials can be found in one place (29 respondents)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consideration of different learners and learning styles (17 respondents)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Search functions of the service, e.g., keywords, classifications, search (16 respondents)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Educational resources can be used without logging in (15 respondents)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Activating elements, e.g., surveys, polls, automatically checked tasks (14 respondents)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">What features do you think are most important for a producer of open educational materials? (Select 1\u20135 most important.)<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Easy updating and editing of educational resources (22 respondents)<\/bdo><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">UEF&#8217;s commitment to the use and development of the platform for a longer period (16 respondents)<\/bdo><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Permanent identifiers, e.g., DOI, URN, Handle (11 respondents)<\/bdo><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Use of the platform between different organizations (10 respondents)<\/bdo><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Simultaneous use by large numbers of users (10 respondents)<\/bdo><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We also received a gratifying number of open-ended responses. The following points were highlighted as possibilities and benefits of using open educational resources (the list items are compiled from separate responses related to the same theme):<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Open educational resources can be shared and used in different educational situations, at different educational levels, and for the workforce, as well as for political discussion.<\/bdo><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Producing educational resources in one place and at one time for different target groups saves overlapping work.<\/bdo><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Open educational resources serve as stimuli and additional and support materials for learning for students who want more teaching than the course offers.<\/bdo><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Open educational resources can be offered to those considering studies, who can use them to think about applying for studies.<\/bdo><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">There is a need for orientation and study skills materials for students in open university, which would be freely and openly available already when the learner is considering starting (paid) the studies.<\/bdo><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Open educational resources can be produced, used, and developed in collaboration with another organization.<\/bdo><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Open educational resources can contribute to the development of continuous learning, produce small learning modules, or MOOC courses.<\/bdo><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">As a producer of open educational resources, you can share your expertise and gain merit.<\/bdo><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We will actively use the survey results to promote open education. Thank you to all respondents for bringing new perspectives to support our work!<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Next steps<\/bdo><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">So far, in the preliminary study of the open educational resources platform, we have mapped and familiarized ourselves with the available platform solutions for open educational resources. Our intention is to pilot a few platform solutions and gather additional information through the pilots to support a possible procurement decision. In collaboration with other experts of various university units, we are currently building an open education support service in the library to better support teachers in utilizing, producing, and publishing open educational resources.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">You can find more information on the developing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uef.fi\/en\/open-learning\">UEF open education pages<\/a> and by participating in the UEF open learning network activities (only in Finnish, at the moment.).
