Olipas erinomaisen l\u00e4mmin ja asiantunteva EAHIL-konferenssi Riiassa, Latviassa kes\u00e4kuussa 2024<\/a>. EAHIL tarkoittaa kansankielell\u00e4 Euroopan terveyskirjastojen j\u00e4rjest\u00f6\u00e4 eli European Association for Health Information and Libraries<\/a>. EAHIL j\u00e4rjest\u00e4\u00e4 vuosittain joko konferenssin tai workshop-tyyppisen tapahtuman, joihin osallistuu satoja akateemisissa ja sairaaloiden kirjastoissa ty\u00f6skentelevi\u00e4 informaatioalan ammattilaisia. T\u00e4ll\u00e4 kertaa konferenssin aiheena oli ”Small Step and a Giant Leap: Reorienting Towards a New Environment”, joka tarkoittanee laajalla skaalalla sit\u00e4, ett\u00e4 ty\u00f6ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6mme muuttuu alati digitalisaation my\u00f6t\u00e4. Eik\u00e4 vain informaatioalalla vaan kaikkialla.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

T\u00e4ss\u00e4 kirjoituksessa keskityn muutamaan tutkimusdatanhallintaan liittyv\u00e4\u00e4n ty\u00f6pajaan, joihin konferenssissa otin osaa. Konferenssi sis\u00e4lsi my\u00f6s liudan esityksi\u00e4 ja postereita mm. tiedonhausta tutkimuksessa, opetuksesta, hyvist\u00e4 k\u00e4yt\u00e4nteist\u00e4, viestinn\u00e4st\u00e4 sek\u00e4 tietysti tutkimusdatanhallinnasta, joita kaikkia en enn\u00e4tt\u00e4nyt edes seurata. Tutkimusdatanhallinnan ollessa suuri osuus ty\u00f6teht\u00e4vist\u00e4ni halusin osallistua mahdollisimman paljon siihen liittyviin osuuksiin. K\u00e4vin v\u00e4liss\u00e4 pit\u00e4m\u00e4ss\u00e4 my\u00f6s oman esitykseni datanhallinnan integroimisesta perustutkintokoulutukseen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nyt niihin ty\u00f6pajoihin: Ensiksi osallistuin tutkimusdatan kuvailu -ty\u00f6pajaan, Research Data Management @ KU Leuven: Interactive workshop on metadata and documentation<\/a>, jonka pitiv\u00e4t KU Leuvenin yliopiston tutkimusdataekspertit; Anouk D’Hont ja Thomas Vandendriessche. He kertoivat, millainen sapluuna heill\u00e4 on tutkijoille pidett\u00e4v\u00e4\u00e4n koulutukseen metadatasta ja dokumentaatiosta. Heill\u00e4 on tutkijoille esimerkkidata, joka tutkijoiden tulee j\u00e4rjestell\u00e4 hyv\u00e4\u00e4n kuosiin ja suunnitella datalle esimerkiksi hyv\u00e4 ja selke\u00e4 kansiorakenne. Lis\u00e4ksi tutkijat p\u00e4\u00e4sev\u00e4t tuon esimerkkidatan avulla miettim\u00e4\u00e4n, millaisia hy\u00f6dyllisi\u00e4 metadatatietoja on hyv\u00e4 ottaa yl\u00f6s datasta, jotta metadata on havainnollistavaa sit\u00e4 tarkasteleville ulkopuolisille henkil\u00f6ille eli vaikkapa mahdollisille yhteisty\u00f6kumppaneille. Tuo esimerkkidata oli todella vaikuttavasti tehty ja sit\u00e4 hy\u00f6dynnet\u00e4\u00e4n loistavasti tutkijoiden ty\u00f6pajoissa. Hyv\u00e4\u00e4 ty\u00f6t\u00e4 belgialaisilta ja todellakin hyv\u00e4 k\u00e4yt\u00e4nt\u00f6, jota mekin voisimme UEF datatuen koulutuksissa hy\u00f6dynt\u00e4\u00e4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Toinen ty\u00f6paja oli yleisempi koulutus tutkimusdatanhallinnasta kokonaisuudessaan nimelt\u00e4\u00e4n ”Introduction to research data management (RDM) for personal health data”<\/a>. Sen pitiv\u00e4t Birte Lindstaedt ja Julia F\u00fcrst Saksasta  (ZB MED \u2013 Information Centre for Life Sciences). T\u00e4m\u00e4 ty\u00f6paja sis\u00e4lsi suurilta osin minulle tuttua asiaa, mutta keskustelut osallistujien kesken olivat sit\u00e4kin hedelm\u00e4llisempi\u00e4. Huomasimme muun muassa sen kuinka lains\u00e4\u00e4d\u00e4nn\u00f6lliset seikat ohjaavat datanhallintaa todella eri tavoin eri maissa. Mielenkiintoista ja eritt\u00e4in opettavaa! Jos haluat lis\u00e4tietoa n\u00e4iden ty\u00f6pajojen sis\u00e4ll\u00f6st\u00e4, ota yhteytt\u00e4 minuun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

EAHIL-konferenssi Riiassa tarjosi paljon omaa ammattitaitoa kehitt\u00e4v\u00e4\u00e4 sis\u00e4lt\u00f6\u00e4, mutta my\u00f6s mahtavia verkostoitumismahdollisuuksia. Etenkin k\u00e4yt\u00e4nn\u00f6n j\u00e4rjestelyt olivat omaa luokkaansa. Oma sovellus konferenssille helpotti osallistujan navigointia sek\u00e4 verkossa ett\u00e4 paikan p\u00e4\u00e4ll\u00e4. Onnittelut siis j\u00e4rjest\u00e4jille onnistuneesta konferenssista! N\u00e4hd\u00e4\u00e4n ensi vuonna EAHIL 2025 workshopissa Puolassa \u0141\u00f3d\u017ain kaupungissa 9.-13. kes\u00e4kuuta<\/a>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I attended the EAHIL conference<\/a> filled with warmth and expertise in Riga, Latvia on June 2024. EAHIL stands for European Association for Health Information and Libraries<\/a>. Each year, EAHIL organises either a conference or a workshop type event, attended by hundreds of information professionals working in academic and hospital libraries. This time the theme of the conference was ”Small Step and a Giant Leap: Reorienting Towards a New Environment”, which, I reckon, on a large scale means the fact that our working environment is constantly changing due to digitalisation. Not just in the informational field of work, but everywhere.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this blog post, I focus on a few research data management workshops that I participated in at the conference. The conference also included a number of interesting presentations and posters on topics such as information retrieval in research, teaching, good practices, communication and, of course, research data management, all of which I had no time to follow, but with research data management, as a large part of my work tasks, I wanted to participate as much as possible in the related sessions. In between, I also gave my own presentation on integrating data management into undergraduate education.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let’s go into those workshops. First, I participated in a research data description workshop, Research Data Management @ KU Leuven: Interactive workshop on metadata and documentation <\/a>held by KU Leuven university’s research data experts; Anouk D’Hont and Thomas Vandendriessche. They told how they train researchers on metadata and documentation of research data. They have an example dataset for researchers, which researchers should organize themselves in the training session and for example, plan a good and clear folder structure for the datasets. In addition, researchers can use that example data to think about what kind of useful metadata would be good to write down about the whole data, so that the metadata is illustrative to any external people looking at it, for example potential research collaborators. The example data was made impressively and is brilliantly utilized in their own university’s training for the researchers. Good work from the Belgians and indeed a good practice that we could also use in data support training at UEF.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second workshop was a more general training in research data management as a whole and called ”Introduction to research data management (RDM) for personal health data”<\/a>. It was held by Birte Lindstaedt and Julia F\u00fcrst from Germany (ZB MED Information Centre for Life Sciences). For me, this workshop included a lot of familiar information, but the conversations among the participants were all the more fruitful. Among other things, we discussed how legal issues steer data management in really different ways in different countries. Interesting and very educational! The EAHIL conference in Riga offered a lot of content to develop one’s own professional skills, but also great networking opportunities and especially practical arrangements were in a class of their own. A dedicated app for the conference made it easier for the participant to navigate both online and on-site. Congratulations to the organizers for a successful conference!
