T\u00e4m\u00e4 teksti kuuluu kirjoitussarjaan, jossa It\u00e4-Suomen yliopiston kirjaston ty\u00f6ntekij\u00e4t kertovat tavallisesta ty\u00f6p\u00e4iv\u00e4st\u00e4\u00e4n. Sarjan tarkoituksena on havainnollistaa nykyp\u00e4iv\u00e4n tieteellisten kirjastojen erilaisia teht\u00e4vi\u00e4 ja vastuita.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moi, Antti t\u00e4ss\u00e4. Minua ei juurikaan asiakastiloissa n\u00e4y, harvoin ty\u00f6p\u00e4iv\u00e4\u00e4n mahtuu asiakasviestint\u00e4\u00e4k\u00e4\u00e4n, jollei kirjaston tahi laajemmin yliopiston henkil\u00f6kunta lasketa teht\u00e4v\u00e4ni n\u00e4k\u00f6kulmasta asiakkaiksi. Ty\u00f6skentelen tietoj\u00e4rjestelm\u00e4asiantuntijana kirjastolla, p\u00e4\u00e4asiallisesti keskityn julkaisutoimintaa tukeviin tietoj\u00e4rjestelmiin. Suurimman osan ajasta teen ty\u00f6ni et\u00e4konttorilta, mutta kun kampuksella olen, olen Joensuun kampuksella.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ty\u00f6p\u00e4iv\u00e4ni alkaa t\u00e4n\u00e4\u00e4n et\u00e4n\u00e4 kello seitsem\u00e4lt\u00e4 ja niin normaalisti kuin p\u00e4iv\u00e4ni voikaan alkaa eli k\u00e4ynnist\u00e4m\u00e4ll\u00e4 j\u00e4rjestelmien kehitykseen rakentamani virtuaalitietokoneen, joka k\u00e4yt\u00e4nn\u00f6ss\u00e4 on tietokone t\u00e4m\u00e4n tietokoneen sis\u00e4ll\u00e4. Eik\u00e4 mik\u00e4 tahansa tietokone, vaan tismalleen samanlainen tietokone kuin kirjaston sis\u00e4isi\u00e4 ja julkisia verkkopalveluja tarjoava palvelin. Samalla kun t\u00e4m\u00e4 kehitysymp\u00e4rist\u00f6 latautuu k\u00e4ytt\u00f6kuntoon, j\u00e4\u00e4 minulle aikaa lukea edellisen\u00e4 p\u00e4iv\u00e4n\u00e4 kirjoittamani muistiinpanot. N\u00e4ist\u00e4 muistiinpanoista n\u00e4en mihin pisteeseen j\u00e4in edellisen\u00e4 p\u00e4iv\u00e4n\u00e4 ja n\u00e4iden perusteella rakennan hyv\u00e4n mielikuvan siit\u00e4, millainen ty\u00f6p\u00e4iv\u00e4 on tulossa. T\u00e4m\u00e4 mielikuva tosin murenee vilkaistessani kalenteriin, siell\u00e4h\u00e4n on sovittuna kokous, jota en ollut muistanut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kehitysymp\u00e4rist\u00f6 on t\u00e4ss\u00e4 samalla k\u00e4ynnistynyt, joten p\u00e4\u00e4sen hiljalleen jo itse asiaan. Isoin projektini on t\u00e4ll\u00e4 hetkell\u00e4 siirt\u00e4\u00e4 kirjaston julkaisuj\u00e4rjestelm\u00e4t uudelle palvelinalustalle ja samalla p\u00e4ivitt\u00e4\u00e4 julkaisuarkisto eRepoa palveleva sovellus DSpace uusimpaan versioon, joka on j\u00e4rjestysnumeroltaan 7. Ty\u00f6t\u00e4 t\u00e4ss\u00e4 riitt\u00e4\u00e4 ja se onkin vienyt leijonanosan ty\u00f6ajastani jo yli vuoden ajalta. Onneksi t\u00e4h\u00e4n ty\u00f6h\u00f6n on saatu valjastettua my\u00f6s toinen tietoj\u00e4rjestelm\u00e4asiantuntija, joten kaikkea ei tarvitse mietti\u00e4 yksin. T\u00e4m\u00e4n p\u00e4iv\u00e4n agenda olisikin selvitt\u00e4\u00e4 miten saisin kirjattua parhaiten saman metadatatiedon sek\u00e4 kaikkiin julkaisuarkisto eRepossa oleviin opinn\u00e4ytteisiin ett\u00e4 oman yliopistomme sarjajulkaisuihin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hyvin rankasti yleist\u00e4en ty\u00f6ni toistaa seuraavaa kaavaa:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

H\u00e4n on huomannut uuden pikkuversion (7.6.1) ilmestyneen t\u00e4st\u00e4 p\u00e4ivitett\u00e4v\u00e4st\u00e4 j\u00e4rjestelm\u00e4st\u00e4 ja olisi hyvin kiinnostunut sen tuomista uudistuksista, ja tietenkin siit\u00e4 miten p\u00e4ivitys tullaan tekem\u00e4\u00e4n. Kalenteroimme t\u00e4m\u00e4n tekemisen seuraavalle viikolle, niin ehdimme kumpikin hieman perehty\u00e4 asiaan ennalta. Luonnollisesti t\u00e4m\u00e4 lis\u00e4\u00e4 j\u00e4lleen testausta ja uusiin asioihin perehtymist\u00e4. T\u00e4m\u00e4 koko p\u00e4ivitysoperaatio tuntuu kuin olisi hypp\u00e4\u00e4m\u00e4ss\u00e4 liikkuvaan junaan ja itsens\u00e4 huolehtimisen lis\u00e4ksi pit\u00e4\u00e4 vahtia, ett\u00e4 kaikki matkalaukutkin saadaan ehjin\u00e4 kyytiin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Et\u00e4t\u00f6iden lomassa pit\u00e4\u00e4 muistaa my\u00f6s sy\u00f6d\u00e4, kampuksella t\u00e4m\u00e4 on huomattavasti helpompaa, kun ty\u00f6yhteis\u00f6 k\u00e4y hyvin suurella joukolla samaan aikaan sy\u00f6m\u00e4ss\u00e4. Nyt jouduin tyytym\u00e4\u00e4n siihen mink\u00e4 sain j\u00e4\u00e4kaapin antimista kyh\u00e4tty\u00e4 kasaan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

P\u00e4iv\u00e4n ainoa kalenteriin merkitty menoni t\u00e4n\u00e4\u00e4n onkin keskustella rinnakkaistallennuksesta vastaavan kollegan kanssa tieteellisten artikkelien avoimuusluvuista. Edellisen vuoden julkaisutiedot on saatu raportoitua VIRTA-opintotietopalveluun ja n\u00e4ist\u00e4 tiedoista meill\u00e4 on ollut tapana tarkastella yliopistomme julkaisujen avoimuuden tilaa. Ja n\u00e4it\u00e4 lukuja peilaamalla pohtia tapoja, joilla saada viel\u00e4 v\u00e4h\u00e4n n\u00e4it\u00e4 maksumuurin takana olevia artikkeleita avoimiksi. UEFin tieteellisten vertaisarvioitujen artikkelien (A1-A4) kokonaisavoimuusprosentiksi vuonna 2023 tulee noin 82 %, luku joka kuitenkin tulee muuttumaan vuoden 2024 aikana kun rinnakkaistallennamme n\u00e4it\u00e4 julkaisuja. Vuoden 2023 tilanne n\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 eritt\u00e4in hyv\u00e4lt\u00e4, olimme asettaneet tavoitteeksi saavuttaa yli 80 % avoimuusasteen ja t\u00e4m\u00e4n toteutuminen jo t\u00e4ss\u00e4 vaiheessa on kova tulos. Jatkamme asiasta keskustelua viel\u00e4 hieman julkaisutiimin kesken, mutta ainoastaan Teams-chatin muodossa. Avoimuuden kasvattaminen t\u00e4st\u00e4 korkeammaksi vaatii eritt\u00e4in kohdennettua viestint\u00e4\u00e4, julkaisutietojen analyysi\u00e4 ja mik\u00e4 t\u00e4rkeint\u00e4, pient\u00e4 lis\u00e4panosta my\u00f6s tutkijakent\u00e4lt\u00e4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Palaan t\u00e4m\u00e4n j\u00e4lkeen takaisin aiemmin aloittamaani metadata-selvitykseen. Kuten kaikessa ty\u00f6ss\u00e4, keskeytykset johtavat aina siihen, ett\u00e4 joudutaan hieman ottamaan takapakkia, jotta saadaan ajatukset kunnolla teht\u00e4v\u00e4n asian ymp\u00e4rille. P\u00e4\u00e4sen kuitenkin nopeasti vauhtiin ja saan kasattua kivasti kasaan SQL-kielisi\u00e4 lauseita, joilla saan haarukoitua tietomassasta ne julkaisutiedot, joihin haluan kohdistaa muutokset. Pohdittavaksi j\u00e4\u00e4 kyll\u00e4 olisiko j\u00e4rkev\u00e4 kirjoittaa t\u00e4m\u00e4n tueksi jokin pieni ohjelma, jonka avulla vastaavanlainen toimenpide olisi ketter\u00e4mpi suorittaa vastaisuudessa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kirjoitan ty\u00f6n lomassa jatkuvasti muistiinpanoja Obsidian-nimisell\u00e4 ty\u00f6kalulla, joka tallentaa tiedot tekstipohjaisina tiedostoina, joita on mahdollista linkitt\u00e4\u00e4 kesken\u00e4\u00e4n ja jolla voi luoda dokumentteihin tageja, joiden avulla pystyn ryhmittelem\u00e4\u00e4n muistiinpanojani joustavasti. Ty\u00f6kalun valinta sopii omiin ohjelmistokehitt\u00e4mistarpeisiini hyvin ja on puhtaasti henkil\u00f6kohtaiseen mieltymykseen perustuva. Osa n\u00e4ist\u00e4 muistiinpanoista on my\u00f6s (pienell\u00e4 lis\u00e4s\u00e4\u00e4t\u00e4misell\u00e4) jaettu samaa ty\u00f6t\u00e4 tekev\u00e4n kollegani kanssa. Ty\u00f6p\u00e4ivien rutiinissa minulla on juuri t\u00e4h\u00e4n sovellukseen liittyv\u00e4 ty\u00f6teht\u00e4v\u00e4: tapanani on kirjoittaa joka p\u00e4iv\u00e4n p\u00e4\u00e4tteeksi pienehk\u00f6 ty\u00f6p\u00e4iv\u00e4kirjamerkint\u00e4, jossa kirjaan muutamalla lauseella mit\u00e4 olen p\u00e4iv\u00e4n aikana tehnyt ja linkkaan n\u00e4ihin liittyv\u00e4t muistiinpanot, jotta p\u00e4\u00e4sen porautumaan n\u00e4ihin asioihin tarpeen tullen tarkemmin. Loppuun kirjaan mahdollisesti viel\u00e4 sen p\u00e4\u00e4llimm\u00e4isen\u00e4 olevan asian, jota seuraavana p\u00e4iv\u00e4n\u00e4 tulisin tekem\u00e4\u00e4n. Ja koska kello alkaa olla nyt yli kolmen, on jo aika tehd\u00e4 t\u00e4m\u00e4 ty\u00f6p\u00e4iv\u00e4n p\u00e4\u00e4tt\u00e4v\u00e4 rituaali ja jatkaa p\u00e4iv\u00e4\u00e4 ihan muissa hommissa, joihin ei liity tietotekniikkaa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This text belongs to a series of blog posts in which the University of Eastern Finland Library staff describe their ordinary days at work. The intention of the series is to illustrate the different tasks and responsibilities involved in present day academic libraries.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hi, Greetings from Antti! I’m rarely seen mingling with the customers and it’s not common for me to handle service requests. I work as an IT systems specialist in the library, focusing mainly on systems supporting the university publishing services. I use the option provided by the university to work mostly remotely, but when I’m at the campus library – it is the Joensuu campus library.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today is a normal day for me, working from home and the day starts at about seven o\u00b4clock. Once my laptop has booted up, I start another computer within my workstation. This virtual computer is an identical environment to the server hosting the web services that both the library staff and the customers use daily. While this development environment is loading, I read my notes from yesterday to catch up on what I was doing and to plan my day accordingly. This plan is about to be rewritten as I take a look at my calendar, I forgot I had a meeting scheduled for today.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The virtual computer has now started up and it’s time to get some actual work done. My biggest project at the moment is to move the applications supporting the publishing services to a new server and at the same time update our institutional repository eRepo to the newest version of DSpace -software, which is the version 7. This is no small task and I have been working on this for more than a year. Luckily, the workload is shared with a colleague. Today\u2019s agenda is to find out a way to add a metadata value to all repository items matching a certain item type, which in this case is our university theses and serial publications.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A very rough oversimplification of my work pattern:<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although a coding library staff member is a rare creature, the work is not done in total isolation. Most of those steps in my work pattern are often a result of teamwork, they begin as ideas from the team members. Of course, sometimes we work on fixing errors and bugs. This work cycle is then repeated with small variations until the desired outcome has been achieved.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

My unofficial remote office assistants interrupt me sometimes to inform me they need to be fed. And that my coffee break could be used also to entertain them. The furballs have also found a clever way to grab my attention, they sit beside me and actually pull my hand away from the keyboard or mouse. Simply irresistible. And annoying.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Working is sometimes interrupted by colleagues; this time it is my IT-colleague who is working with the same eRepo system as I am. She has noticed a new version update that has some new interesting features worth updating. We have decided that the update could be done in the following week and schedule a meeting for this. These updates usually create new issues and require a full testing process. This really feels like jumping on to a moving train.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lunchtimes are easier to remember while on campus and usually the restaurant is packed with librarians. At the remote office, it’s a bit trickier, at least for me. A quick rummaging through the fridge gives me something to eat.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The only scheduled appointment in my calendar today is to discuss the open access statistics with the self-archiving specialist from our publishing team. We tend to examine these numbers from the previous year when the reporting period is over, and all the data is delivered to the VIRTA service. The open access percentage for peer-reviewed articles in 2023 sets to 82%. But this number will change as we self-archive articles delivered to us. We also pay close attention to publications that are not published as gold OA, hybrid OA or even self-archived as green OA. This is to figure out ways to improve our capabilities to contact the university researchers and increase the number of open access articles. After the meeting we continue the discussion with other publishing specialists in a joint Teams chat.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is time to return to the metadata project started earlier. In every profession, interruptions lead to losing focus. It takes some time to get back on track, luckily this time I’m ready to continue quite easily and after a while I have some SQL-queries crafted. These queries filter the database so that the result set contains only the publication types I was hunting for. I’m left wondering if this should be written as a separate program, in which I could just change what I’m looking for. This program could make any similar operations in the future a lot easier.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

While working, I use notetaking software called Obsidian to write notes. It creates simple text files that can be linked together and added tags to, this combination enables me to create a searchable, flexible and navigable group of notes that (with some extra work) can be shared with others too. This tool fits my professional needs as well as my personal preferences. This notetaking app also contains a feature that helps me write a work-diary and this has proved to be a helpful routine for me. These notes contain a concise summary of the work done that day, links to related notes and some reminders on how to proceed tomorrow. Since it’s a bit past three o’clock, it’s also time to write this day\u2019s chapter and shut down the computer. My day continues in activities that require no digital devices at all.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n
