Vuosi 2022 muistetaan varmasti pitk\u00e4\u00e4n koronatoimien p\u00e4\u00e4ttymisest\u00e4. Yliopistollekin p\u00e4\u00e4si taas vapaasti. Pohdimme kirjastossa alkuvuodesta, mahtavatko asiakkaat l\u00f6yt\u00e4\u00e4 takaisin tiloihimme. Iloksemme saatoimme todeta vastauksen positiiviseksi. Esimerkiksi syyslukukauden alku<\/a> oli meille yht\u00e4 juhlaa, kun saimme tuta uusien opiskelijoiden h\u00e4mmennyksen ja riemun opiskelun alkamisesta. Nuorten into tarttuu meihinkin, ty\u00f6el\u00e4m\u00e4ss\u00e4 kiinni oleviin kirjastolaisiin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Useimmat aineistojamme k\u00e4ytt\u00e4vist\u00e4 asiakkaistamme tekev\u00e4t ty\u00f6t\u00e4\u00e4n et\u00e4n\u00e4, joten kirjaston palveluidenkin pit\u00e4\u00e4 olla saavutettavissa verkossa. S\u00e4hk\u00f6isten aineistojen k\u00e4ytt\u00f6 kasvaa koko ajan. Tukea siihen tarvitaan kuitenkin jatkuvasti. Siksi laadimme uuden tiedonhakijan oppaan<\/a> sek\u00e4 otimme k\u00e4ytt\u00f6\u00f6n kaksi uutta palvelujen tukij\u00e4rjestelm\u00e4\u00e4, Efecten ja chattibotin. Ensin mainittu on kirjaston sis\u00e4inen j\u00e4rjestelm\u00e4, jolla voimme entist\u00e4 tehokkaammin kohdentaa s\u00e4hk\u00f6isesti tulevat kysymykset oikean asiantuntijan vastattavaksi. Chattibotti Uffe puolestaan auttaa vastaamalla yksinkertaisiin kysymyksiin, monimutkaisemmat ohjautuvat edelleen asiantuntijoillemme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Opiskelu ja tutkimus eiv\u00e4t en\u00e4\u00e4 katso aikaa ja paikkaa, joten kirjaston tilojenkin on oltava k\u00e4ytett\u00e4viss\u00e4 vuorokauden ymp\u00e4ri joka p\u00e4iv\u00e4. Niinp\u00e4 laajensimme tilojen ymp\u00e4rivuorokautista k\u00e4ytt\u00f6\u00e4 my\u00f6s pyh\u00e4p\u00e4iviin. K\u00e4ytt\u00f6 edellytt\u00e4\u00e4 kulkutunnisteen hankkimista sek\u00e4 sitoutumista k\u00e4ytt\u00f6s\u00e4\u00e4nt\u00f6jen noudattamiseen. Menneen\u00e4 vuonna havaitsimme muutamia k\u00e4ytt\u00f6h\u00e4iri\u00f6it\u00e4. Onneksi keskusteluilla ja tiedottamisella tilanteet purkautuivat nopeasti. On kaikkien kannalta parasta, ett\u00e4 asiakkaamme antavat toisilleen ty\u00f6rauhan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yliopiston kampuskehityshanke k\u00e4ynnistyi viime vuonna. Opiskelun ja tutkimuksen teon muutokset edellytt\u00e4v\u00e4t uutta ajattelua my\u00f6s tilojen k\u00e4ytt\u00f6\u00f6n. Kirjastolle t\u00e4m\u00e4 on mahdollisuus. Esimerkiksi painettujen aineistojen v\u00e4henemisen my\u00f6t\u00e4 kokoelmille varattuja tiloja voidaan muuntaa asiakask\u00e4ytt\u00f6\u00f6n. Kirjasto on my\u00f6s luonteva paikka yliopistolaisten ja kaupunkilaisten yhteisiin tilaisuuksiin. T\u00e4m\u00e4n suuntaisia tilank\u00e4yt\u00f6n muutoksia on jo ideoitu, toivottavasti ne tulevaisuudessa my\u00f6s toteutuvat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Opetuksen muutokset<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Korona-aika joudutti kovasti yliopiston opetuksen monimuotoistumista. Pakkoet\u00e4opetus on koronan v\u00e4istymisen my\u00f6t\u00e4 takana, hybridiopetus on tullut tilalle. Kansallinen Digivisio 2030 -hanke lis\u00e4\u00e4 opiskelijoiden mahdollisuuksia suorittaa et\u00e4kursseja eri yliopistoista. T\u00e4m\u00e4 kaikki edellytt\u00e4\u00e4 paljon my\u00f6s oppimateriaaleilta. Pelkk\u00e4 painettu aineisto ei riit\u00e4, et\u00e4opetus ja korkeakoulujen v\u00e4linen opetus kaipaavat kovasti s\u00e4hk\u00f6isi\u00e4 aineistoja. Kirjastolle t\u00e4m\u00e4 on uhka ja mahdollisuus. S\u00e4hk\u00f6iset kurssikirjat ovat jo ly\u00f6neet l\u00e4pi, mutta ne ovat kalliita hankkia. Avoimet oppimateriaalit ovat hyv\u00e4 ja joustava vaihtoehto, mutta niiden k\u00e4ytt\u00f6 edellytt\u00e4\u00e4 viel\u00e4 paljon pohtimista ja k\u00e4yt\u00e4nn\u00f6n toimia ennen kuin ne saadaan laajalti k\u00e4ytt\u00f6\u00f6n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kirjasto on saanut ottaa t\u00e4rke\u00e4n askeleen opetuksen suunnittelussa, kun sen edustajat ovat p\u00e4\u00e4sseet mukaan tiedekuntien koulutuksen kehitt\u00e4misen toimikuntiin (KOTO). N\u00e4in kirjasto saa tarpeellista tietoa opetussuunnitelmaty\u00f6st\u00e4 ja voi olla mukana tarjoamassa omaa opetustaan mukaan kurssitarjottimiin. Erilaiset opintojaksomme ovat olleet kovin suosittuja<\/a> ja niit\u00e4 kaivataan lis\u00e4\u00e4. Erityisesti tiedonhaku, tiedon luotettavuuden arviointi, saalistajajulkaisujen tunnistaminen sek\u00e4 aineistonhallintasuunnitelman teko olivat aiheita, joista meilt\u00e4 kaivattiin opastusta opintojen eri vaiheisiin. Kurssitarjontamme onkin laajenemassa edelleen<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vuonna 2021 p\u00e4\u00e4ttyneen datatukihankkeen palvelut<\/a> saatiin vakinaistettua osaksi kirjaston toimintaa vuoden 2022 alussa. N\u00e4ille palveluille onkin laaja tarve tutkimuksen digitalisoitumisen my\u00f6t\u00e4. Tutkijoiden on saatava tukea datanhallintaan ty\u00f6ns\u00e4 kaikissa vaiheissa aineistonhallintasuunnitelman laatimisesta datan elinkaaren p\u00e4\u00e4ttymiseen asti. Kirjastolla on merkitt\u00e4v\u00e4 rooli t\u00e4m\u00e4n kokonaisuuden hahmottamisessa sek\u00e4 palvelutarjonnan koordinoinnissa. Kirjastossa on laadittu oma sivustonsa tutkimusdataan liittyville kysymyksille, ja se on jo osoittautunut tarpeelliseksi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Avoin tiede<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Kirjaston lokakuussa 2022 j\u00e4rjest\u00e4m\u00e4t valtakunnalliset Tiedejulkaisemisen p\u00e4iv\u00e4t kokosivat korkeakoulujen v\u00e4ke\u00e4 pohtimaan avoimien aineistojen tulevaisuutta sek\u00e4 haasteita. Alati kohoavien tieteellisten julkaisujen lisenssimaksujen rinnalle ovat tulleet korkeat julkaisujen avoimeksi saattamisen kustannukset<\/a>. Sen lis\u00e4ksi, ett\u00e4 niist\u00e4 on tullut kiinte\u00e4 osa kustantajien lisenssimaksuja, yliopistossa maksettiin noin 400 000 euroa n\u00e4it\u00e4 niin sanottuja APC-maksuja. Kotimaisten tieteellisten lehtien avoimeksi saattaminen ei viel\u00e4k\u00e4\u00e4n edennyt, koska sopivaa kustannusmallia ei ole saatu aikaiseksi. Pohdinta jatkuu niilt\u00e4kin osin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yksi yliopistomme strategisista tavoitteista on olla avoimen tieteen edell\u00e4k\u00e4vij\u00e4. Yliopistolle perustettu uusi avoimen tieteen ty\u00f6ryhm\u00e4 pohtii, mit\u00e4 t\u00e4m\u00e4 tarkoittaa sek\u00e4 tekee esityksi\u00e4 avoimen tieteen linjaamiseksi sek\u00e4 edist\u00e4miseksi. Sen agendalla ovat niin avoin julkaiseminen, avoin data kuin avoin oppiminenkin. Ty\u00f6ryhm\u00e4 pohtii, miten kansalliset linjaukset ja kansainv\u00e4liset suositukset saadaan sovitettua toiminnaksi yliopistossamme. Se tekee esityksi\u00e4 p\u00e4\u00e4tt\u00e4ville tahoille eli tutkimuksen johtoryhm\u00e4lle sek\u00e4 opetuksen ohjausneuvostolle. Ty\u00f6 on vasta alussa, mutta tahti on kiihtyv\u00e4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Painetut aineistot<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Vaikka l\u00e4hes kaikki uutuushankinta suuntautuu s\u00e4hk\u00f6isiin aineistoihin, kirjaston laajat painetun aineiston kokoelmat ovat edelleen hyvin varteenotettava l\u00e4hdemateriaali monille tutkimusaloille. Voidaankin puhua humanistisesta infrastruktuurista. Etenkin kirjaston vapaakappalekokoelma<\/a> on viel\u00e4 osin l\u00f6yt\u00e4m\u00e4t\u00f6n voimavara, siksi sen markkinointiin panostettiin viime vuonna. Kokoelma k\u00e4sitt\u00e4\u00e4 l\u00e4hes kaiken Suomessa painetun aineiston noin nelj\u00e4n vuosikymmenen ajalta. Vapaakappaleiden l\u00f6ytyvyys on parantunut, kun aineistoa on saatu n\u00e4kyviin kirjaston Primo-hakupalveluun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Toinen yll\u00e4tyksi\u00e4kin tarjoava vapaakappaleiden osa-alue on Kansalliskirjaston ker\u00e4\u00e4m\u00e4 s\u00e4hk\u00f6inen aineisto<\/a>. Se on vapaasti k\u00e4ytett\u00e4viss\u00e4 kirjaston molemmilla kampuksilla olevilla ty\u00f6asemilla.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kirjaston teht\u00e4v\u00e4n\u00e4 on pit\u00e4\u00e4 osaltaan huolta siit\u00e4, ett\u00e4 yliopistolaiset menestyv\u00e4t opinnoissaan, tutkimuksissaan ja muissa t\u00f6iss\u00e4\u00e4n. Nykyisin t\u00e4m\u00e4 tarkoittaa kirjastolle hyvin moninaisia teht\u00e4vi\u00e4. Ty\u00f6teht\u00e4vien vaativuus on kasvanut, mutta henkil\u00f6kuntamme on vastannut haasteeseen laajentamalla osaamistaan. Uusissa rekrytoinneissa tohtorikoulutuksen saaneiden henkil\u00f6iden osuus on kasvanut. T\u00e4m\u00e4 vahvistaa tutkijoille annettavien palvelujen tarjontaa entisest\u00e4\u00e4n. Kirjaston mahdollisuus tukea yliopiston menestyst\u00e4 on hyviss\u00e4 k\u00e4siss\u00e4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The year 2022 will certainly be long remembered as the year when the corona measures came to an end, and the university too was once again freely available. At the beginning of the year, we at the library discussed whether customers would find their way back to our premises. We were pleased to confirm that the answer was positive. For example, the beginning of the autumn semester<\/a> was a throughout celebration for us, as we got to know the confusion and joy of new students about to start their studies. Despite being firmly in working life ourselves, the enthusiasm of young people attached onto us librarians as well.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most of the customers that use our materials work remotely, so the library services must also be accessible online. The use of electronic materials is growing continuously, and support for this use is also needed. This is why we created the new Guide to Information Retrieval<\/a> and introduced two new service support systems, Efecte and a chatbot. The former is the library’s internal system, with which we can forward electronic queries efficiently to the right expert. The chatbot Uffe, on the other hand, helps by answering simple questions, although the more complex ones are still directed to our experts.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Studying and research are no longer tied to time and place, so the library facilities must also be available around the clock, every day. Thus, we extended the round-the-clock use of the facilities to public holidays as well. 24\/7 use requires the acquisition of a personal access badge and commitment to comply with the terms of use. We noticed a few failures to comply in the past year. Fortunately, the situations quickly unravelled with discussion and proper informing. It is best for everyone that our customers grant each other a peaceful environment.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The university’s campus development project was launched last year. Changes in studying and research also require new ideas for the utilisation of facilities. We view this as an opportunity for the library. For example, with the decrease in printed materials, spaces previously reserved for collections can now be converted for customer use. The library is also a suitable environment for joint events between university students and personnel as well as other city residents. There has already been brainstorming regarding changes towards this direction, and these ideas will hopefully also be implemented in the future.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Changes in teaching<\/bdo><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The coronavirus pandemic hastened the diversification of university teaching significantly. Compulsory remote education is behind us as the coronavirus has receded, and hybrid teaching has taken its place. The national Digivisio 2030 programme increases students’ opportunities to take online courses from different universities. All this requires much in terms of educational material. Printed material alone is not enough, as distance education and inter-university teaching are in dire need of electronic materials. For the library, this is both a threat and an opportunity. Electronic course books are already in wide use, but they are expensive to acquire. While open educational resources are a good and flexible option, a great deal of consideration and practical action is needed before they can serve as the main solution.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The library has been able to take an important step in the planning of teaching by having its representatives included in the faculties\u2019 committees for the development of education (KOTO). This way, the library receives necessary information about the curriculum work and can participate by offering its own teaching to the list of courses. Our various courses have been a success<\/a> and there is a demand for more. We were sought guidance from particularly on the topics of information retrieval, evaluation of the reliability of information, identification of predatory publishing, and the creation of a data management plan. Our list of courses is ever-expanding<\/a>.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The services that were a part of our data support project<\/a>, which ended in 2021, were made a permanent part of the library’s operations at the beginning of 2022. The digitalisation of research ensures a widespread need for these services. Researchers must receive support for data management at all stages of their work, from the preparation of a data management plan to the end of the data life cycle. The library plays a significant role in shaping the overall picture and coordinating the range of services. The library has created a specific website for questions related to research data, and it has already seen much use.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Open science<\/bdo><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Research Publishing Days 2022, organised by the library in October, brought together people from higher education institutions to reflect on the future and challenges of open materials. In addition to the ever-increasing licensing fees for research publications, there are now also the high costs of making them open access<\/a>. These have become an integral part of publishers’ license fees, and the university spent close to 400,000 euros on these so-called APC fees. The process of making domestic scientific journals open access has not yet proceeded, because a suitable cost model has not been found. The reflection continues on those points as well.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the strategic goals of our university is to be a forerunner in open science. The new open science working group of the university will consider the topic and further propose actions for the outlining and promotion of open science. Open access publishing, open data, and open learning are all included in its agenda. The working group will consider how national policies and international recommendations are to be adapted into actions at our university. It will make proposals to the decision-making bodies, i.e., the research management team and the Council for Teaching and Guidance. The work is just beginning, but the pace is accelerating.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Printed materials<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

While almost all new material acquisitions are electronic in nature, the library’s extensive collections of printed material remain noteworthy information resources for many fields of research. It is suitable to talk about humanistic infrastructure. The library’s legal deposit collection<\/a>, in particular, remains underutilised as a resource, which is why we invested in its marketing last year. The collection comprises almost all material printed in Finland over a period of about four decades. The findability of legal deposit copies has improved as the material has been made available in the Library’s UEF Primo search service.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another, sometimes surprising area of the legal deposit activity consists of the electronic materials<\/a> collected by the National Library of Finland. The collection is freely available on the legal deposit workstations on both campuses of the library.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The library’s task is to ensure that university students as well as staff members succeed in their studies, research, and other work. Today, this comes with a wide range of tasks for the library. The requirements for the tasks\u2019 completion have increased, but our staff has responded to the challenge by developing their expertise. In new recruitments, the number of applicants with doctoral training has increased. This will further improve the services provided to researchers. The library’s opportunity to support the success of the university is in good hands.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n
