Reippaasti yli satap\u00e4inen EU-tallekirjastojen edustajajoukko kokoontui t\u00e4h\u00e4n Euroopan komission Viestinn\u00e4n p\u00e4\u00e4osaston organisoimaan tapahtumaan, jonka viisi p\u00e4\u00e4teemaa olivat akateemisten yhteis\u00f6jen osallistaminen, EU-tietokantakoulutukset, sosiaalinen media, vuoden 2024 europarlamenttivaalit ja ty\u00f6pajat EU-tallekirjastojen roolista. Ehk\u00e4 koronavuosien my\u00f6t\u00e4 yleistyneiden et\u00e4kokousten j\u00e4lkeen kaikki olivat erityisen ilahtuneita tapaamaan vanhoja ja uusia kollegoita kasvotusten. Uutena EU-tallekirjastolaisena oli varsin helppoa ja luontevaa sujahtaa joukon jatkoksi verkostoitumaan ja kuuntelemaan mielenkiintoisia esityksi\u00e4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Richard K\u00fchnel (Euroopan komissiosta) kertoi avajaispuheessaan ensimm\u00e4isen EU-tallekirjaston perustamisvuoden olleen 1963. Veikkaan tiedon saaneen monen kuulijan pohtimaan kuinka t\u00e4t\u00e4 voidaan huomioida ja kenties juhlistaa omassa ty\u00f6yhteis\u00f6ss\u00e4 ensi vuonna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EU-tallekirjastojen roolia k\u00e4siteltiin monesta n\u00e4k\u00f6kulmasta koulutusp\u00e4ivien aikana. Ensimm\u00e4isen\u00e4 Gaetane Ricard-Nihoul ja Alessandro Giordani (molemmat Euroopan komissiosta) valottivat paneelikeskustelussa muun muassa EU-tallekirjastojen mahdollisuuksia osallistaa akateemista maailmaa mukaan aktiiviseen keskusteluun Euroopan tulevaisuudesta. Yhdeksi keinoksi mainittiin kansalaispaneelit, joita tullaan j\u00e4rjest\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n tulevaisuudessa. EU-tallekirjastojen rooliteeman pohdiskelua jatkettiin nelj\u00e4ss\u00e4 rinnakkaisessa ty\u00f6pajassa. Toisessa ty\u00f6pajassa hahmoteltiin keinoja saada opiskelijoita osallistumaan muun muassa kansalaistoimintaan napakan johdantoesitelm\u00e4n pohjalta. Nuorille suunnattua osallistavaa materiaalia on yll\u00e4tt\u00e4v\u00e4n paljon valmiiksi luotuna. Koulutusp\u00e4ivien p\u00e4\u00e4tteeksi ty\u00f6pajojen keskeisimm\u00e4t oivallukset esiteltiin yhteisesti kaikille.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nelj\u00e4ss\u00e4 tiiviiss\u00e4 ja k\u00e4yt\u00e4nn\u00f6nl\u00e4heisess\u00e4 \u201d<bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Search Like a Pro\u201d<\/bdo> -tietoiskussa tarjoiltiin tietoa nelj\u00e4st\u00e4 EU-tietol\u00e4hteest\u00e4:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>EUR-LEX<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">EU Open Data Portal<\/bdo><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Legislative Observatory<\/bdo><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">EC Library Guides<\/bdo><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Jokainen <bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\u201cSearch Like a Pro\u201d<\/bdo>-tietoisku alkoi lyhyell\u00e4 tietoiskulla kulloisestakin tietol\u00e4hteest\u00e4 ja p\u00e4\u00e4ttyi kysymys-vastaus-osioon, jossa yleis\u00f6n kiperiin kysymyksiin vastailtiin syv\u00e4ll\u00e4 asiantuntemukselle. Tietoiskujen suurin anti oli niiden konkreettiset tiedonhakuesimerkit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kolmessa lyhyess\u00e4 hissipuheessa esiteltiin kolmea eri tietovarantoa:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">EU Academy<\/bdo><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Publications Office<\/bdo><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Learning Corner<\/bdo><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Mielenkiintoisina nostoina n\u00e4ist\u00e4 voi mainita Learning Corner -sivuston yll\u00e4tt\u00e4v\u00e4n laajat ja monipuoliset opetusmateriaalit, pelit ja esitysmateriaalit, jotka on jaoteltu ik\u00e4ryhmitt\u00e4in. Maininnan arvoisena tutustumiskohteena voi suositella my\u00f6s EU Academyn aineistojen (muun muassa opetusvideoita sis\u00e4lt\u00e4vi\u00e4) kursseja. Palvelun k\u00e4ytt\u00e4minen vaatii rekister\u00f6itymisen. Euroopan unionin julkaisutoimiston sivusto pit\u00e4\u00e4 sis\u00e4ll\u00e4\u00e4n valtavasti aineistoa esimerkiksi eurooppalaisesta datasta, EU-julkaisuista sek\u00e4 tutkimuksesta ja innovoinnista.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ensimm\u00e4isen p\u00e4iv\u00e4n ehtoopuolella Stephen Clarkin (Euroopan parlamentista) taidokkaasti koottua esityst\u00e4 vuoden 2024 europarlamenttivaaleista oli ilo katsella ja kuunnella. Clarkin taito kiteytt\u00e4\u00e4 sanomansa kuvan ja parin ydinsanan avulla on taito, jonka toivon oppivani. Vaikka europarlamenttivaaleihin on yli vuosi aikaa, niihin valmistautuminen aloitetaan hyviss\u00e4 ajoin Euroopan unionissa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ensimm\u00e4isen p\u00e4iv\u00e4n viimeisess\u00e4 esityksess\u00e4 paneuduttiin tuhdilla tietopaketilla sosiaalisen median maailmaan. Esityksen valovoimaisin anti oli Belgian Antwerpenin <bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">EUROPE DIRECT -pisteen edustajien konkreettiset esimerkit heid\u00e4n tavoistaan k\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 sosiaalista mediaa (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn ja Pinterest). Yleis\u00f6st\u00e4 kyseltiin, miksi heill\u00e4 ei ole Twitter-tili\u00e4. Syyn\u00e4 oli muun muassa sen p\u00e4ivitystiheyden tarve. Kuulijoille tarjoiltiin my\u00f6s tietoa sosiaalisen median k\u00e4yt\u00f6n hy\u00f6dyist\u00e4.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ensimm\u00e4inen p\u00e4iv\u00e4 p\u00e4\u00e4ttyi cocktail-tilaisuuteen ja illalliseen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Toinen p\u00e4iv\u00e4<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Toinen koulutusp\u00e4iv\u00e4 alkoi Jeremy Herryn (Euroopan komissiosta) Euroopan vihre\u00e4n kehityksen ohjelman esittelyll\u00e4. Sen tavoitteena on ilmastoneutraali Eurooppa vuoteen 2050 menness\u00e4. Esityksess\u00e4 annettiin EU-tallekirjastolaisille vinkkej\u00e4, kuinka ilmastosanomaa voidaan vied\u00e4 eurooppalaisten tietoisuuteen. Valmiiden (englanninkielisten) tietovarantojen avulla, kuten Climate Pact ja Education for Climate Coalition, on helppo j\u00e4rjest\u00e4\u00e4 esimerkiksi keskustelutilaisuuksia ilmastonmuutoksesta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Koulutusp\u00e4ivien viimeisess\u00e4 puheessa Alessandro Giordani antoi l\u00e4htij\u00f6ille kotiinviemisiksi teht\u00e4vi\u00e4, jotka liittyv\u00e4t muun muassa viestint\u00e4\u00e4n omassa ty\u00f6yhteis\u00f6ss\u00e4. Koulutusp\u00e4iv\u00e4t eiv\u00e4t j\u00e4\u00e4 irralliseksi tapahtumaksi, vaan kotiteht\u00e4v\u00e4t tuovat jatkuvuutta EU-tallekirjastojen toimintaan Euroopan unionissa. EU-tallekirjastojen toimintaverkoston laajuus hahmottuu parhaiten kurkkaamalla <a href=\"https:\/\/european-union.europa.eu\/contact-eu\/meet-us_fi\">kartasta<\/a> toimipisteet. Toivottavasti vastaavanlaista koulutusta j\u00e4rjestet\u00e4\u00e4n tulevaisuudessa l\u00e4hitapaamisformaatilla, vaikka et\u00e4koulutuksilla on oma t\u00e4rke\u00e4 paikkansa nykymaailmassa. Kuva | Photo: Marika Mahlavuori<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Introduction<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201cEuropean Documentation Centres\u2019 Training Seminar\u201d, lasting about a day and a half, was held in Brussels on 16\u201317 November 2022. This event, organised by the European Commission&#8217;s Directorate-General for Communication, brought together an audience of well over 100 representatives from most European Documentation Centres (EDC). The five main themes of the seminar were: engagement with the academic community, EU database training, social media, the European Elections 2024, and workshops on the role of EDCs. The programme of the training days was concise and informative. You can find a more detailed list of links to the materials of the training days at the end of the blog post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Day one<\/bdo><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Even before the first speech was held, one could sense that the audience was on an open and enthusiastic mood, and had a thirst for learning. Perhaps after remote meetings that became a commonplace during the COVID-19 years, everyone was particularly pleased to meet old and new colleagues face to face. As a new employee of the European Documentation Centre, it was fairly easy and natural to blend in with others, and network and listen to interesting presentations.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">In his opening speech, Richard K\u00fchnel (from the European Commission) said that the first European Documentation Centre was established in 1963. I bet that hearing this piece of information made many of the listeners consider how they could take this into account and perhaps celebrate it in their own work community next year.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The role of EDCs was discussed from many perspectives during the training days. First, Gaetane Ricard-Nihoul and Alessandro Giordani (both from the European Commission) shed light on the possibilities of EDCs, among others, to involve the academic community in an active debate on the future of Europe. One of the means mentioned was the European citizens&#8217; panels, which will be organised in the future. The reflection on the theme concerning the role of EDCs continued in four parallel workshops. Each participant could choose two workshops of their preference.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I first took part in a workshop that discussed how to guide students to EU databases and sources of information. The second workshop outlined ways by which to attract students to participate in, for example, civic life with the help of compact introductory presentations. There is already a surprisingly large amount of ready-made participatory materials intended for young people available. Finally, the main observations made and insights found in the parallel workshops were collected on big Post-it notes and divided into the following categories: challenges, best practices and recommendations. At the end of the training days, the key insights of the workshops were shared with everyone.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Four concise and practical \u201cSearch Like a Pro\u201d information spots provided knowledge on four sources of EU information:<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">EUR-LEX<\/bdo><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">EU Open Data Portal<\/bdo><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Legislative Observatory<\/bdo><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">EC Library Guides<\/bdo><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Each \u201cSearch Like a Pro\u201d spot started with a short bulletin on the source of information in focus and ended with a Q &amp; A session where experts with in-depth knowledge of the subject answered the tough questions from the audience. The biggest benefit the information spots gave me were the concrete examples of information searches.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Three short elevator pitches were held to present three different information resources:<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">EU Academy<\/bdo><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Publications Office<\/bdo><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Learning Corner<\/bdo><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">As an interesting highlight of these, I could mention the surprisingly extensive and versatile educational materials, games and presentation materials on the Learning Corner website, divided by age group. Another resource I could recommend as worth exploring are the courses found in the EU Academy materials (including educational videos). Using the service requires registration. The website of the Publications Office of the EU contains a huge amount of material on European data, EU publications, research and innovation, etc.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Towards the end the first day, it was a pleasure to see and listen to Stephen Clark&#8217;s (from the European Parliament) skilfully compiled presentation of the European Elections 2024. Clark&#8217;s ability to crystallise his message with the help of an image and a few key words is the kind skill I hope to learn. The most illuminative part of the presentation were the concrete examples given by the representatives of the EUROPE DIRECT service point in Antwerp, Belgium, of how they use social media (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and Pinterest). The audience asked them why they do not have a Twitter account. One of the reasons was that it would need to be updated very frequently. The listeners were also informed about the benefits of using social media.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The first day ended with a cocktail reception and dinner.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Day two<\/bdo><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The second day of training began with the presentation by Jeremy Herry (from the European Commission) on the European Green Deal, aimed at a climate-neutral Europe by 2050. The presentation gave tips to EDC employees on how they could bring the climate message to the attention of Europeans. Ready-made data resources (in English), such as Climate Pact and Education for Climate Coalition, make it easy to organise discussion events on climate change, for example.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><bdo lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">In the last speech of the training days, Alessandro Giordani gave as homework for the delegates tasks related, among other things, to communications in their own work community. The training days will not remain a separate event, but the homework given brings continuity to the activities of EDCs within the European Union. The best way to fathom the scope of the operating network of EDCs is to take a look at the locations of the EDC service points on <a href=\"https:\/\/european-union.europa.eu\/contact-eu\/meet-us_en\">a map<\/a>. You can also find the contact details of EDC employees on the map.
