Olen Anni Tarkiainen, UEF-kirjaston projektity\u00f6ntekij\u00e4. Aloitin ty\u00f6t elokuun puolessav\u00e4liss\u00e4 kirjaston koulutuksen kehitt\u00e4miseen keskittyv\u00e4ss\u00e4 hankkeessa, jossa teht\u00e4viini kuului p\u00e4\u00e4s\u00e4\u00e4nt\u00f6isesti kirjaston uuden, kaikille avoimen oppimateriaalin kanssa ty\u00f6skentely. Materiaali kulkee nimell\u00e4 Tiedonhakijan opas, ja se julkaistaan hetken p\u00e4\u00e4st\u00e4. Kannattaa siis seurata kirjaston tiedotusta!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kirjaston koulutuksen kehitt\u00e4minen -hanke on ehtinyt olla k\u00e4ynniss\u00e4 t\u00e4m\u00e4n vuoden alusta saakka. Elokuussa alkaneen projektity\u00f6ni sis\u00e4ll\u00f6ksi oli m\u00e4\u00e4ritelty materiaalin teknisen osuuden toteutus. Iso osa ty\u00f6ajastani kuluikin kirjaston asiantuntijoiden valmiiden materiaalien koostamisessa ja muotoilussa verkkosivuille sopiviksi. Toinen yht\u00e4 laaja osio oli kuvamateriaalien suunnittelu ja rakentaminen kaikille saavutettavaan muotoon. Saavutettavuudesta innostuneena tartuin my\u00f6s oppaan sis\u00e4lt\u00f6\u00f6n, jonka selkeyteen ja ymm\u00e4rrett\u00e4vyyteen teimme syksyn mittaan parannuksia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ty\u00f6kaverini Marika Mahlavuori toivoi, ett\u00e4 kertoisin millaista on ty\u00f6skennell\u00e4 It\u00e4-Suomen yliopiston kirjastolla projektissa. Aino Salosen koostamaa ja kirjoittamaa Duunitorin artikkelia<\/a> ja sen sis\u00e4lt\u00e4mi\u00e4 sananlaskuja siteeraten, lainaten, soveltaen ja t\u00e4ydent\u00e4en valitsin yhdeks\u00e4n ty\u00f6h\u00f6n liittyv\u00e4\u00e4 sananlaskua, jotka mielest\u00e4ni sopivat kuin nen\u00e4 kirjastolaisen p\u00e4\u00e4h\u00e4n:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ei kysyv\u00e4 tielt\u00e4 eksy.<\/strong>
Kirjastolla oli todella l\u00e4mmin vastaanotto ja kannustava ilmapiiri tehd\u00e4 t\u00f6it\u00e4. Kysyminen oli helppoa, ja projektity\u00f6ntekij\u00e4n\u00e4kin koin olevani yhdenvertainen ty\u00f6ntekij\u00e4 muiden, pidemp\u00e4\u00e4n talossa olleiden kanssa. Ty\u00f6paikasta riippumatta kannattaa tietysti olla itsekin aktiivinen ja normaalin mukava ty\u00f6ntekij\u00e4, kuunnella ja keskustella muidenkin kuin oman ty\u00f6huoneen pulinaporukan kanssa. Toimistop\u00e4ivin\u00e4 oli siis oikein mukava kerrata kuulumisia kaikkien kanssa kahvihuoneessa ja lounaalla. Samalla opin my\u00f6s, ett\u00e4 kirjaston teht\u00e4v\u00e4kentt\u00e4 on valtavan laaja ja kirjastolaisia on mukana todella monissa yliopiston toiminnoissa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aloittamista vaille valmis.<\/strong>
Olen huomannut, ett\u00e4 projekteilla on hyvin usein jokin suunnitelma, jota tulisi noudattaa. Joskus suunnitelma on l\u00f6yhempi, ja joskus taas tiukempi. Itse tykk\u00e4\u00e4n, ett\u00e4 projektin virallinen suunnitelma m\u00e4\u00e4ritt\u00e4\u00e4 isot suuntaviivat ja yksityiskohtaisemmasta tekemisest\u00e4 sovitaan pienemm\u00e4ss\u00e4 porukassa. T\u00e4ss\u00e4 projektissa suunnitelmat olivat tarpeeksi joustavia my\u00f6s pienten mutkien ilmaantuessa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hullu paljon ty\u00f6t\u00e4 tekee, viisas p\u00e4\u00e4see v\u00e4hemm\u00e4ll\u00e4.<\/strong>
Kirjaston nykyisist\u00e4 opetusmateriaaleista l\u00f6ytyi paljon sis\u00e4lt\u00f6\u00e4, joita hy\u00f6dynsimme onnistuneesti osana avointa oppimateriaalia. Kaikkea sis\u00e4lt\u00f6\u00e4 emme siis tehneet alusta saakka, vaikka toki muokkailimme materiaaleja selke\u00e4mp\u00e4\u00e4n suuntaan esimerkiksi yhtenev\u00e4n kieliasun ja kuvitusten osalta. Oppaan toteutuksessa otimme mahdollisimman hyvin huomioon koko paketin yll\u00e4pidett\u00e4vyyden ja k\u00e4ytimme It\u00e4-Suomen yliopiston k\u00e4yt\u00f6ss\u00e4 olevia ty\u00f6kaluja (mm. WordPress-pohjat ja ThingLink).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mittaa kahdesti ja sahaa yhdesti.<\/strong>
Mielest\u00e4ni suunnitelmallisuutta tarvitaan, jotta lyhyess\u00e4kin projektissa ty\u00f6aikaa k\u00e4ytet\u00e4\u00e4n j\u00e4rkev\u00e4sti ja mielekk\u00e4\u00e4sti. Tiedonhakijan oppaan materiaalien viimeistelyss\u00e4 suunnittelimme ty\u00f6n vaiheistusta niin, ett\u00e4 my\u00f6s odotusaikoina oli mielek\u00e4st\u00e4 tekemist\u00e4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yksi peruna kerrallaan.<\/strong>
Kun palastelimme oppaan rakentamisen pienempiin osiin, ei urakka tuntunut mahdottomalle, vaikka tekemist\u00e4 oli v\u00e4lill\u00e4 paljonkin. Nelj\u00e4n kuukauden ty\u00f6skentelyss\u00e4 saavutimme tavoitteet yksi kerrallaan oikein hyvin. Toisaalta ty\u00f6n edetess\u00e4 huomasimme monta uutta kehitt\u00e4miskohdetta, joita ty\u00f6stimme jo syksyll\u00e4 ja viemme eteenp\u00e4in my\u00f6s jatkossa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ei siin\u00e4 kauaa mene, kun t\u00f6it\u00e4 tekee.<\/strong>
Olen huomannut, ett\u00e4 lyhyiss\u00e4 projektit\u00f6iss\u00e4 voi olla paikallaan suhtautua t\u00f6ihin niin, ett\u00e4 ainakin tietyt tavoitetasot t\u00e4yttyv\u00e4t. Valmista j\u00e4lke\u00e4 on hyv\u00e4 olla tehtyn\u00e4 johonkin ennalta m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4ttyyn hetkeen menness\u00e4, koska projektin parissa ty\u00f6skentely muuttuu tai joskus jopa p\u00e4\u00e4ttyy tietyn ajanjakson j\u00e4lkeen. Projekteihin kuuluva aikapaine on mietitytt\u00e4nyt etenkin, jos projektissa ilmaantuu jotain ennalta-arvaamatonta. Minun syksyyni mahtui toki sellaisiakin kokemuksia ja onneksi ty\u00f6kaverit muistuttivat, ett\u00e4 maailma ei kaadu, vaikka oppaaseen j\u00e4\u00e4 t\u00e4ydennett\u00e4vi\u00e4 osioita.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rohkea rokan sy\u00f6.<\/strong>
Omien kokemusteni mukaan projektity\u00f6ss\u00e4 voi olla tarpeen heitt\u00e4yty\u00e4 ja omaksua nopeasti uusia taitoja. Vaatii rohkeutta oppia uuden ty\u00f6paikan tavoille, antautua ty\u00f6n opetuksille ja ymm\u00e4rt\u00e4\u00e4 sek\u00e4 muiden, ett\u00e4 omat asiantuntijuuden vahvuudet ja heikkoudet suhteessa projektity\u00f6n sis\u00e4lt\u00f6\u00f6n. Lyhyemmiss\u00e4 projekteissa n\u00e4m\u00e4 seikat korostuvat entisest\u00e4\u00e4n, koska aikaa on rajallisesti.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alku aina hankalaa, lopussa kiitos seisoo.<\/strong>
Alku ei t\u00e4ss\u00e4 kirjaston projektissa ollut minulle hankalaa, vaikka projektity\u00f6ss\u00e4 voikin olla alussa ep\u00e4tarkka mielikuva tulevien teht\u00e4vien sis\u00e4ll\u00f6st\u00e4 ja laajuudesta. Ty\u00f6n edetess\u00e4 vastaan tulee usein my\u00f6s asioita, joihin ei ole projektin aikana mahdollista panostaa niiden edellytt\u00e4m\u00e4ll\u00e4 voimakkuudella. Niit\u00e4 voidaan joutua karsimaan pois teht\u00e4v\u00e4listalta toistaiseksi tai kokonaan, jotta ty\u00f6n lopputulos palkitsee. Nyt minusta tuntuu, ett\u00e4 saimme oikein kattavan, kaikille avoimen tiedonhaun oppaan muovailtua ja voimme kehitt\u00e4\u00e4 opasta edelleen palautteiden perusteella.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ei niin pient\u00e4 ojaa, ettei sinne oma lehm\u00e4 mahtuisi.<\/strong>
Mielest\u00e4ni projektity\u00f6l\u00e4isenkin on hyv\u00e4 muistaa omasta itsest\u00e4 huolehtiminen: ihan koko ajan ei kannata osallistua kaikkiin ty\u00f6n ymp\u00e4rill\u00e4 tapahtuviin tilanteisiin, jos ne eiv\u00e4t tue projektin tavoitteiden saavuttamista tai vastaa omia kiinnostuksenkohteita. Itselleni oli t\u00e4rke\u00e4\u00e4, ett\u00e4 p\u00e4\u00e4sen t\u00e4ss\u00e4 ty\u00f6ss\u00e4 vahvistamaan verkko-oppimateriaalien toteuttamiseen ja saavutettavuusvaatimusten t\u00e4ytt\u00e4miseen liittyv\u00e4\u00e4 osaamista, ja t\u00e4m\u00e4 toive toteutui todella hyvin. Sain siis pit\u00e4\u00e4 oman lehm\u00e4ni ojassa! Ehk\u00e4 t\u00e4ss\u00e4 kohtaa on my\u00f6s paikallaan mainita, ett\u00e4 Biotieteiden LuK- ja FM-tutkintoni opinn\u00e4ytety\u00f6t tein lehmiin liittyvist\u00e4 aiheista, kun taas t\u00e4ll\u00e4 hetkell\u00e4 olen kirjastoty\u00f6n ohella tietojenk\u00e4sittelytieteen FM-opiskelija.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kiitos siis It\u00e4-Suomen yliopiston kirjastolaisille siit\u00e4, ett\u00e4 sain asiantuntijoiden tuella ty\u00f6st\u00e4\u00e4 t\u00e4rke\u00e4\u00e4 materiaalipakettia samalla, kun nautin osaavan, opiskelijoita arvostavan ja toisistaan innostuvan ty\u00f6porukan yhteis\u00f6llisest\u00e4 kulttuurista! My name is Anni Tarkiainen, and I am a project worker in the UEF (University of Eastern Finland) Library. I started in this role in mid-August. The project itself focuses on developing the library’s education services, and my duties included working with the new teaching material that is meant to be available for all. The material is called Information Retrieval Guide, and it will soon be published on a website. You might want to follow the library\u2019s information channels for announcements!<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This project for developing library\u2019s education services has been running since the beginning of this year. My part was to do the technical part of the process. I spent most of my time designing and modifying the contents made by library\u2019s experts so that the content would fit well to the website. Another equally wide section of my work was designing and creating visual materials in an accessible format. Because of enthusiasm for accessibility topics, I also suggested and made modifications to the original content to make the guide clearer and more understandable.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

My co-worker, Marika Mahlavuori, hoped that I would write a post about what it is like to work at the University of Eastern Finland Library in a short project. Aino Salonen wrote an article in Duunitori<\/a> with several Finnish proverbs related to work life, and I used that article in my Finnish post. This English translation includes the explanations attached to each proverb I used, but the proverbs are not translated.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEi kysyv\u00e4 tielt\u00e4 eksy.\u201d<\/strong>
In the UEF Library, I felt welcome and got to work in an encouraging atmosphere. If something was unclear, it was easy to ask for help. Even as a project worker I was an equal worker with others who had been in the house for longer periods. Of course, regardless of the job, it is always worth being an active and nice colleague, listening to and talking to different co-workers. On office days it was nice to chat with everyone in the coffee room and at lunch. At the same time, I also learned that the library takes part in multiple tasks and is also involved in several activities.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAloittamista vaille valmis.\u201d<\/strong>
I have noticed that projects very often have a plan that should be followed. Sometimes the plan is looser, and sometimes it is tighter. Personally, I like that the official plan of the project offers the big guidelines, and more detail is agreed on in a smaller group. In this project, the plans were flexible enough even when small bends appeared.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A lot of content was already available in the library’s current teaching materials, and the existing materials were successfully used as part of the open learning material created in this project. That means not all the content on the new website was made from scratch, although we did, of course, modify the materials to make them accessible and easier to learn from. For example, I aimed for uniform language and clear illustrations. The future maintenance of the guide was also considered as well as the contents of the guide were finalized with tools available to the University of Eastern Finland (e.g., WordPress and ThingLink).<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMittaa kahdesti ja sahaa yhdesti.\u201d<\/strong>
Planning is sometimes needed for effective and reasonable work even in a short project. In finalizing the materials of this guide, we designed our work so that there is also meaningful work to be done during the waiting times.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYksi peruna kerrallaan.\u201d<\/strong>
When the remaining work was returned to smaller parts, it did not seem impossible to finish the website in time although there was occasionally a lot to do. We achieved the goals very well during the four months of work. On the other hand, as the work progressed, many new areas were noticed waiting to be developed. Some of them we already worked on this autumn and will continue to work on in the future.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I think that in short-term projects work it might be best to work in a way that at least certain target levels are met. It is good to get things done by a predetermined moment, because projects might change or sometimes even end after a certain period. The time pressure of the projects may be of concern, especially if something unforeseeable appears. Naturally, some challenges came up during this autumn, and colleagues reminded me that it is not expected to have every little detail finished before the great deadline.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cRohkea rokan sy\u00f6.\u201d<\/strong>
Even though it is common that at the beginning of project work the scope of future tasks may lack details, starting on this project was not difficult for me. Also, as the work progresses, there are often also issues that cannot be invested in during the project with the necessary strength. Such issues may have to be cut off from the to-do list for the time being or in total to achieve prioritized goals. I am glad we managed to create a guide that is very comprehensive and open to all, and we can further develop the guide based on the feedback.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAlku aina hankalaa, lopussa kiitos seisoo.\u201d<\/strong>
It is also important for a project worker to remember to take care of herself: it is not always necessary to take part in all events if they do not support the project\u2019s goals or fit in with one\u2019s own interests. It was important for me to focus on the skills related to e-learning materials and the accessibility requirements, and this wish was well realized.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, thank you library experts of the University of Eastern Finland for supporting me and working together with an important learning material, and introducing me to the culture and company of a skilled, student-appreciating, and enthusiastic group of colleagues!
