Lukuvuoden 2021\u20132022 lopulla It\u00e4-Suomen yliopiston (UEF) kirjaston tiedonhaun ja tutkimuksen tuen opetuksissa palattiin v\u00e4hitellen monimuoto-opetukseen edellisen lukuvuoden verkko-opetuksen j\u00e4lkeen. Kirjasto tuottaa opintopisteytettyj\u00e4 tiedonhaun opintojaksoja UEFin perustutkinto-opiskelijoille, tutkimuksen tuen opintojaksoja UEFin jatko-opiskelijoille sek\u00e4 tiedonhaun ja tutkimuksen tuen lyhytkursseja UEFin opiskelijoille ja UEFin ja Kuopion yliopistollisen sairaalan (KYS) henkil\u00f6kunnalle. Kandidaatinopintojen ja englanninkielisten maisteriohjelmien tiedonhaun opintojaksot j\u00e4rjestet\u00e4\u00e4n tieteenaloittain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

T\u00e4rkeit\u00e4 oppeja<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Kandidaattiopintojen ja englanninkielisten maisteriohjelmien tiedonhaun opintojaksojen opiskelijapalautteissa t\u00e4rkeimmiksi opituiksi asioiksi nousivat tiedonhaun ydinasiat: UEFin oman kirjastotietokannan UEF-Primon<\/a> ja kansainv\u00e4listen tietokantojen k\u00e4ytt\u00f6, hakusanojen valinta, tiedonhakutekniikat, kuten Boolen logiikan ja haun rajausten k\u00e4ytt\u00e4minen sek\u00e4 \u201dhelmenkasvatuksen\u201d eli jo l\u00f6ydetyn hyv\u00e4n l\u00e4hdeteoksen avainsanojen ja viitteiden hy\u00f6dynt\u00e4minen muiden samankaltaisten l\u00e4hteiden l\u00f6yt\u00e4miseksi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

T\u00e4rke\u00e4ksi opituksi asiaksi nostettiin my\u00f6s tiedonl\u00e4hteiden luotettavuuden arviointi, ja siihen liittyen sek\u00e4 luotettavien vertaisarvioitujen ett\u00e4 ep\u00e4luotettavien saalistajajulkaisujen tunnistaminen. L\u00e4hdemateriaalin k\u00e4sittelyss\u00e4 auttavia ohjelmia pidettiin hy\u00f6dyllisin\u00e4. Lis\u00e4opetusta toivottiin ulkomaisten l\u00e4hteiden l\u00f6yt\u00e4misest\u00e4, eri tietokannoista ja viitteidenhallintaohjelmistoista, e-kirjojen k\u00e4yt\u00f6st\u00e4 ja l\u00e4hdeviittausten tekemisest\u00e4. Tiedonhaun opintojakson kiitettiin avanneen sek\u00e4 tiedonhakua ett\u00e4 omaa ymm\u00e4rryst\u00e4:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201dOmalla kohdallani tiedonhaku helposti jym\u00e4ht\u00e4\u00e4 samoille vanhoille urille ja tuloksena on l\u00e4hinn\u00e4 turhautuminen. T\u00e4ll\u00e4 kurssilla sain uusia v\u00e4lineit\u00e4, joilla voin poiketa v\u00e4h\u00e4n tuntemattomillekin vesille tiedon kalasteluun.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Erilaisia suoritustapoja<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Kiitosta sai opintojakson sijoittuminen kandidaatinseminaarin yhteyteen: tiedonhaun opintojaksolla opittuja taitoja p\u00e4\u00e4si heti k\u00e4ytt\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n kandidaatintutkielmassa. Toisaalta todettiin, ett\u00e4 tiedonhaun taidoille olisi ollut tarvetta jo aiemminkin ja toivottiin kurssia jo ensimm\u00e4iselle opiskeluvuodelle tai v\u00e4hint\u00e4\u00e4nkin kurssin sis\u00e4lt\u00f6jen sivuamista jo aikaisemmassa vaiheessa opintoja:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201dMinulle t\u00e4m\u00e4 kurssi oli eritt\u00e4in hy\u00f6dyllinen ja ehdottoman tarpeellinen. Sain juuri niit\u00e4 ty\u00f6kaluja ja osaamista, mit\u00e4 olen jo aikoja sitten kaipaillut!\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tiedonhaun koulutuksissa toivottiin nostettavan esille paitsi opiskelun, my\u00f6s ty\u00f6el\u00e4m\u00e4n tiedonhakua:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201dOlisin halunnut oppia, tiet\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n, onko jatkossa, opiskelun j\u00e4lkeen mit\u00e4\u00e4n mahdollisuuksia ty\u00f6el\u00e4m\u00e4ss\u00e4, saada selville yht\u00e4 hyvin t\u00e4rke\u00e4\u00e4 tietoa.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

L\u00e4hi- ja et\u00e4opetusta yhdist\u00e4vi\u00e4 vaihtoehtoisia suoritustapoja kehuttiin. L\u00e4hi- ja et\u00e4opetuksena j\u00e4rjestettyj\u00e4 tiedonhakuharjoituksia ja ryhm\u00e4ty\u00f6skentelyn vertaistukea arvostettiin, mutta my\u00f6s itsen\u00e4isen ty\u00f6skentelyn koettiin tarjoavan mahdollisuuden keskitty\u00e4 itselle relevantteihin kysymyksiin:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201dAjattelin ensin, ett\u00e4 kurssi on ns. turha, koska olen jo yhden alemman korkeakoulututkinnon suorittanut, mutta p\u00e4in vastoin. Koen, ett\u00e4 opin paljon uutta itsen\u00e4isen ty\u00f6skentelyn avulla.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Opintojaksojen opettajia kiitettiin opintojaksojen monipuolisista opetusmenetelmist\u00e4, oppimista tukevista teht\u00e4vist\u00e4, rakentavasta palautteesta ja itsen\u00e4iseen ty\u00f6skentelyyn rohkaisemisesta:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201dMielest\u00e4ni tiedonhakukurssi oli eritt\u00e4in mielenkiintoinen sek\u00e4 hyv\u00e4ll\u00e4 tavalla haastava, koska ei t\u00e4llaisia asioita opi kuin opettelemalla ja oppimalla omista virheist\u00e4. En ole koskaan ennen edes ajatellut n\u00e4in laajasti tiedonhaun merkityst\u00e4, ja huomasin omista tekemisist\u00e4ni kurssiteht\u00e4vi\u00e4 tehdess\u00e4, ett\u00e4 tiedonhaku onkin paljon vaikeampaa, kun osasin kuvitellakaan.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Valinnaisia opintojaksoja<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Maisterintutkielman tekij\u00f6ille suunnatun valinnaisen Syvent\u00e4v\u00e4t informaatiotaidot -opintojakson t\u00e4rkeimp\u00e4n\u00e4 opittuna asiana nostettiin tiedonhaun lis\u00e4ksi viitteidenhallintaohjelmistot ja aineistonhallinta. Opintojakson kiiteltiin v\u00e4hent\u00e4v\u00e4n graduun liittyvi\u00e4 paineita ja stressi\u00e4.  Opintojaksoa toivottiin markkinoitavan laajemminkin vaikkapa suoraan eri oppiaineiden graduryhmille. Opintojakson opettajat saivat kiitosta k\u00e4yt\u00e4nn\u00f6nl\u00e4heisest\u00e4 opetuksesta, kannustavasta ilmapiirist\u00e4 ja huolenpidosta:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201dT\u00e4m\u00e4 kurssi nyt ja jatkossakin v\u00e4hensi oleellisesti esim graduun liittyvi\u00e4 paineita ja stressi vapautuu k\u00e4ytt\u00f6\u00f6n eik\u00e4 koteloidu. Kiit\u00e4n kaikkia opettajia, huolenpito oli l\u00e4mp\u00f6ist\u00e4!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tohtorikoulun tutkimuksen tuen opintojaksojen \u2013 Tutkimuksen tiedonhaku ja -hallinta (2 op), Tutkimusaineiston hallinta (1 op) ja Basics of Open and Responsible Science (2 op) \u2013 t\u00e4rkeimmiksi opeiksi nostettiin avoin tiede, julkaisukanavien valinta ja avoimen julkaisemisen hy\u00f6dyt, tutkijan n\u00e4kyvyys, viitteidenhallinta ja metriikka, aineistonhallinnan merkitys tutkimuksen suunnittelussa ja aineistonhallintasuunnitelman laatiminen sek\u00e4 datan avaaminen ja pitk\u00e4aikaiss\u00e4ilytys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Opintojakso sai kiitosta monipuolisuudesta ja joustavuudesta eli siit\u00e4, ett\u00e4 sen pystyi suorittamaan lukukausien aikana itsen\u00e4isesti oman aikataulun mukaan, mutta my\u00f6s videoluentoja, vuorovaikutteisuutta, kes\u00e4suoritusmahdollisuutta ja suomenkielisi\u00e4 oppimateriaaleja toivottiin:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201dOmalla aikataululla teht\u00e4v\u00e4t verkkokurssit ovat erinomaisia t\u00e4llaisen asian opiskeluun, kun on mahdollista tehd\u00e4 teht\u00e4v\u00e4t silloin kun siihen on aikaa.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201dHy\u00f6dyllinen kurssi, suosittelisin kaikille jatko-opiskelijoille.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Viitteidenhallinnan uutuuksia<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Opintojaksopalautteissa usein mainitut viitteidenhallintaohjelmat nousivat muutoinkin esille kev\u00e4\u00e4ll\u00e4 2022, sill\u00e4 sopimusteknisist\u00e4 syist\u00e4 RefWorks-viitteidenhallintaohjelman tilaus p\u00e4\u00e4ttyy vuoden 2022 lopussa. Kirjasto kartoitti helmikuussa 2022 eri viitteidenhallintaohjelmien k\u00e4ytt\u00f6\u00e4 UEFissa ja k\u00e4ytt\u00e4jien toiveita tulevista ty\u00f6kaluista. Vastauksia saatiin runsaasti, l\u00e4hemm\u00e4s 200.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Viitteidenhallintaohjelmistojen teknisten ominaisuuksien ja k\u00e4ytt\u00e4j\u00e4kyselyvastausten perusteella UEFin kirjasto tarjoaa jatkossa koulutusta avoimen l\u00e4hdekoodin Zotero<\/a>-viitteidenhallintaohjelmasta ja k\u00e4ytt\u00f6tukea sek\u00e4 Mendeleyn<\/a> ett\u00e4 Zoteron ilmaisversioihin k\u00e4ytt\u00f6\u00f6n. Zoteron koulutuksia j\u00e4rjestet\u00e4\u00e4n viikoittain syyslukukaudella 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Opintojaksopalautteissa todettiin viitteidenhallintakoulutuksen innostaneen hakeutumaan my\u00f6s systemaattisten kirjallisuuskatsausten laadinnan tueksi tarkoitetun Covidence<\/a>-ohjelmiston k\u00e4ytt\u00f6koulutukseen. Covidence-ohjelmisto auttaa systemaattisten kirjallisuuskatsauksen teossa: ty\u00f6kaluun voi ladata viitteit\u00e4 eri tietokannoista ja seuloa niit\u00e4 mm. tiivistelm\u00e4n ja otsikon perusteella. Kaikki UEFin opiskelijat ja henkil\u00f6kunta saavat Covidencen k\u00e4ytt\u00f6\u00f6ns\u00e4 UEF-Primon kautta. Kirjasto tarjoaa teknist\u00e4 tukea my\u00f6s Covidencen k\u00e4ytt\u00f6\u00f6n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kirjastolle voi antaa palautetta ja tehd\u00e4 kehitt\u00e4misehdotuksia my\u00f6s opintojaksojen ulkopuolella mm. kirjaston palautelomakkeella<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the end of the academic year 2021-2022, the information skills and research support education at the University of Eastern Finland (UEF) library gradually returned to blended learning after the online teaching during the previous academic year. The library produces credit-graded information skills courses for UEF undergraduate students and research support courses for UEF postgraduate students, as well as short courses in information skills and research support for UEF students and UEF and Kuopio university hospital (KUH) staff. The information skills courses for the Bachelor\u2019s programmes and Master\u2019s programmes in English are organised by discipline.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lessons to take away<\/bdo><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The key lessons learned from student feedback from the Bachelor\u2019s and Master\u2019s degree programmes for information skills courses were: The use of UEF Primo<\/a>, UEF\u2019s own library database, as well as international databases, the selection of search terms, information retrieval techniques such as the use of Boolean logic and the various ways to delimit searches as well as the use of \u201cpearl growing\u201d, i.e., the use of keywords and references from a good reference work already found in order to find other similar sources.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Evaluating the reliability of information sources was also highlighted as an important lesson learned, and, in connection with that, identifying both reliable peer-reviewed and unreliable predatory publications. Programmes that help in processing the source material were considered useful. Additional teaching was requested on finding foreign sources, various databases and reference management software, as well as on using e-books and making references to sources. The information skills course was praised for having opened up both students\u2019 understanding of information retrieval and their own understanding:<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn my own case, searching for information easily falls into the same old ruts, mostly resulting in frustration. This course provided me with new tools with which I can venture into a slightly unfamiliar territory to fish for knowledge.\u201d<\/em><\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Different study implementations<\/bdo><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Particularly appreciated by students was the fact that the course was placed in connection with the bachelor\u2019s seminar: this meant that students were immediately able to put the information skills that they had learned in the course to good when writing their bachelor\u2019s thesis. On the other hand, students noted that they would have needed information skills even earlier, and expressed the hope that the first-year studies or, at the very least, the contents of the course should be touched on at an earlier stage of their studies:<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor me, this course was very useful and absolutely necessary. I got exactly the tools and know-how I\u2019ve been longing for for ages!\u201d<\/em><\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students hoped that teaching on information skills should highlight information skills not only during studies but also in the working life:<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201dI would have liked to learn and to know if there are any opportunities later, in the working life, after completing my studies, to find equally easily important information.\u201d<\/em><\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alternative methods that combine contact and distance teaching were praised. While teaching, information retrieval exercises and group work organised in the form of contact teaching and the peer support it offered were well-liked, independent work was also felt to offer an opportunity to focus on issues that were relevant to students:<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI first thought that the course would be just a waste of time, because I have already completed one Bachelor\u2019s degree, but the opposite proved be true. I feel that I learned a lot of new things through independent work.\u201d<\/em><\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The teachers of the courses were praised for versatile teaching methods, learning assignments that supported studying, constructive feedback on assignments and encouragement to independent work:<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn my opinion, the information skills course was very interesting and challenging in a good way, because you don\u2019t learn such things except by learning and learning from your own mistakes. I have never even thought so extensively about the importance of searching for information before, and I noticed from my own assignments that searching for information is much more difficult than I could have imagined.\u201d<\/em><\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Optional courses<\/bdo><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In addition to information retrieval, reference management software and data management were highlighted as the most important lessons learned in the elective Advanced information skills<\/em> course aimed at writers of the master\u2019s thesis. The course was praised for reducing the pressure and stress associated with writing the thesis. Students hoped that the course would be marketed more extensively, directly to the thesis groups of different subjects, for example.
The teachers of the course received praise for their pragmatic approach to teaching, an encouraging atmosphere that they created even in distance learning, and their solicitude:<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis course, both now and also later, significantly reduced the pressure associated with, for example, writing the master\u2019s thesis, enabling the stress to be put to good use and preventing it from being encapsulated. I thank all the teachers, their care was warm! \u201c<\/em><\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

With regard to the doctoral school research support studies \u2013 Research information retrieval and management for postgraduate students<\/em> (2 ECTS); Basics of research data Management<\/em> (1 ECTS); Basics of open and responsible science<\/em> (2 ECTS) \u2013 the most important lessons learned were open science, selecting publication channels and open publishing and its benefits, researcher visibility, reference management and metrics, preparing a data management plan and the significance of data management in the planning of research,  and opening and long-term storage of data.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the course was praised for its versatility and flexibility, which means that students could complete it independently during semesters according to their own schedule, video lectures, interaction, the possibility of completing the course in summer, and Finnish-language learning materials were also desired:<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOnline courses on your own schedule are excellent for studying this kind of material, as it is possible to complete assignments when you have time to do so.\u201d<\/em> \u201cA useful course, I would recommend it to all postgraduate students\u201d.<\/em><\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is new in reference management<\/bdo><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The reference management programmes, often referred to in course feedback, were also raised in feedback in spring 2022 as the subscription to the reference management program RefWorks will end at the end of 2022 for contractual reasons. In February 2022, the library surveyed the use of various reference management programmes at UEF and user preferences for future tools. A great number of responses were received, close to 200.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Based on the technical features of the reference management software and the user survey responses, the UEF library will provide training on the open source reference management software Zotero<\/a> and user support for both Mendeley<\/a> and Zotero free versions. Zotero trainings have been and will be organised weekly in the autumn term 2022.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The course feedback found that the reference management training also inspired students to apply for training on the Covidence<\/a> software which is intended to support the preparation of systematic literature reviews. The Covidence software helps in the preparation of systematic literature reviews: references from various databases can be uploaded to the tool and screened on the basis of abstracts and titles, for example. All UEF students and staff have access to Covidence via UEF Primo. The library also provides technical support for using Covidence.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The library thanks you for the course feedback! They provide a valuable addition to the development of the library\u2019s information skills and research support courses.
