Kansalliskirjaston<\/a> kahden vuoden v\u00e4lein j\u00e4rjest\u00e4m\u00e4t kirjastoverkkop\u00e4iv\u00e4t<\/a> toteutettiin t\u00e4ll\u00e4 kertaa kokonaisuudessaan et\u00e4tapahtumana 27.\u2013 28.10.2021.  Tarjonta oli runsasta, sill\u00e4 ohjelmaa j\u00e4rjestettiin nelj\u00e4n kaistan kautta. Ennen varsinaista kaksip\u00e4iv\u00e4ist\u00e4 tapahtumaa j\u00e4rjestettiin 26.10.2021 Verkkoseminaari: Digitaalisen kulttuuriperinn\u00f6n aika \u2013 katse kauemmas.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ensimm\u00e4inen p\u00e4iv\u00e4 – Asiaohjelmaa ja keskusteluja<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

P\u00e4ivien avaajana toimi Kansalliskirjaston ylikirjastonhoitaja Cecilia af Forselles. P\u00e4\u00e4puhujaksi oli kutsuttu Helsingin yliopiston tietojenk\u00e4sittelytieteen professori Teemu Roos, jonka aiheena oli ”Teko\u00e4ly — Ensyklopedistin unelma vai Baabelin kirjasto?”<\/a>. Ensyklopedistin unelmassa teko\u00e4ly on 2000-luvulla helpottanut ja nopeuttanut isojen tietomassojen k\u00e4sittely\u00e4 tiedonhaussa ja tieteellisess\u00e4 tutkimuksessa, automatisoinut logistiikkaa ja tuonut uusia mahdollisuuksia viihteeseen. Teko\u00e4lyn tuottavuuden kasvuodote maailmanlaajuisesti v. 2030 on 15,7 biljoonaa $ (PwC, 2017). Toisaalta Baabelin kirjaston n\u00e4k\u00f6kulmasta teko\u00e4ly on uskomattoman voimakas ty\u00f6kalu, jolla on my\u00f6s arveluttavia k\u00e4ytt\u00f6tarkoituksia kuten profilointi. Demokratian n\u00e4k\u00f6kulmasta riskin\u00e4 on datan keskittyminen valtaville alustatalousyrityksille. Lis\u00e4ksi j\u00e4rjestelmien kompleksisuus ja l\u00e4pin\u00e4kym\u00e4tt\u00f6myys ovat s\u00e4\u00e4ntelyn kannalta haaste. Roos esitteli my\u00f6s Helsingin yliopiston Avoimen yliopiston tarjoamia avoimia teko\u00e4lyyn liittyvi\u00e4 verkkokursseja.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

E-aineistojen hallinta -sessiossa, jossa osallistujia oli l\u00e4hes 200, tuotiin esimerkkien kautta esille metatiedon merkitys e-aineistojen hallinnassa. Puheenvuoroja k\u00e4yttiv\u00e4t Ritva Nikola Oulun kaupunginkirjastosta ja Aija Laine Helsingin kaupunginkirjastosta. Fasilitaattorina toimi Matti Sarmela Helsingin kaupungin kirjastosta. E-aineistojen hallintaa katsottiin erityisesti yleisten kirjastojen n\u00e4k\u00f6kulmasta. Keskustelua k\u00e4ytin Padletissa ja esille nousi tarve tarjota sek\u00e4 e-aineistot ett\u00e4 painetut aineistot saman asiakask\u00e4ytt\u00f6liittym\u00e4n kautta. T\u00e4ll\u00e4 hetkell\u00e4 e-aineistot tarjotaan useimmiten erillisen e-aineistolinkin tms. kautta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lounaan j\u00e4lkeen kaistalla yksi jatkettiin teemalla \u201dOpen access – t\u00e4ss\u00e4 ja nyt\u201d Kansalliskirjaston Jyrki Ilvan johtaessa puhetta. Osuuden avasi Suomen Akatemian Jussi Varkemaa kertomalla Plan S:n ajankohtaisista kuulumisista. Varkemaan j\u00e4lkeen Kansalliskirjaston Arja Tuuliniemi jatkoi esittelem\u00e4ll\u00e4 FinELibin transformatiivisten sopimusten kehityst\u00e4 ja niiden vaikutusta avoimen julkaisemisen yleistymiseen. Transformatiivisten sopimusten ja artikkelimuotoisten julkaisujen avoimuudesta siirryttiin seuraavaksi pohtimaan tieteellisten kirjojen avointa saatavuutta. Viimeist\u00e4 varsinaista ty\u00f6p\u00e4iv\u00e4\u00e4ns\u00e4 Oulun yliopiston kirjaston johtajana viett\u00e4nyt Pekka Olsbo kertoi paitsi tieteellisten monografioiden ja kokoomateosten avoimena julkaisemisen haasteista, my\u00f6s tehdyst\u00e4 ja tekeill\u00e4 olevasta ty\u00f6st\u00e4 kirjojen avoimen julkaisemisen edist\u00e4miseksi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Samaan aikaan kaistalla kaksi kuultiin Finto-palvelusta. Finto-palvelun<\/a> kautta p\u00e4\u00e4see k\u00e4ytt\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n suomalaisia asiasanastoja ja ontologioita. Jarmo Saarikko Kansalliskirjastosta esitteli, kuinka kuka tahansa voi tehd\u00e4 uusia asiasanaehdotuksia YSO<\/a>-sanastoon (Yleinen Suomalainen Ontologia). Toisessa puheenvuorossa Joeli Takala Kansalliskirjastosta kertoi Kansalliskirjaston kehitt\u00e4m\u00e4st\u00e4 avoimen l\u00e4hdekoodin Skosmos-ohjelmistosta, jota k\u00e4ytet\u00e4\u00e4n ymp\u00e4ri maailmaa. Skosmos<\/a> toimii my\u00f6s Finto-palvelun selailuk\u00e4ytt\u00f6liittym\u00e4n taustaohjelmistona.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Samalla kakkoskaistalla oli seuraavaksi aiheena Ajankohtaista j\u00e4rjestelmist\u00e4. Anne Koivisto esitteli kehitteill\u00e4 olevaa kirjastoj\u00e4rjestelmist\u00e4 riippumatonta asiakastoimista tilausmoduulia Varastokirjastotilauksia varten. It\u00e4-Suomen yliopiston kirjaston johtaja Ari Muhonen puolestaan kertoi korkeakoulukirjastojen yhteistilastoinnin jatkon\u00e4kymist\u00e4. Lis\u00e4ksi kuultiin ajankohtaista tietoa Melindasta sek\u00e4 Koha-yhteisty\u00f6st\u00e4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kello kolmen j\u00e4lkeen ykk\u00f6skaistalla perehdyttiin viel\u00e4 Kansalliskirjaston tuoreeseen kuvailupolitiikkaan ja kansallisbibliografiaty\u00f6h\u00f6n Kansalliskirjaston edustajien puheenvuorojen my\u00f6t\u00e4. Marja-Liisa Sepp\u00e4l\u00e4 avasi pelin esittelem\u00e4ll\u00e4 tuoretta kuvailupolitiikkaa vuosille 2021\u20132030. Katri Kananen laajensi teemaa ottamalla mukaan kansallisbibliografiaty\u00f6n suhteen kuvailupolitiikkaan. Satu Niininen kertoi t\u00e4m\u00e4n j\u00e4lkeen tarkemmin kansallisbibliografisen tiedon rakenteesta ja k\u00e4yt\u00f6st\u00e4 sek\u00e4 kansainv\u00e4lisist\u00e4 periaatteista kansallisbibliografiaty\u00f6n taustalla. Puheenjohtaja Martin Engberg p\u00e4\u00e4tti osuuden ja samalla p\u00e4iv\u00e4n varsinaisen asiaohjelman havainnollistamalla kansallisbibliografian kuvailua ja periaatteita k\u00e4yt\u00e4nn\u00f6ss\u00e4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jos kirjastoverkkop\u00e4iv\u00e4t olisi j\u00e4rjestetty l\u00e4hitapahtumana, ensimm\u00e4isen p\u00e4iv\u00e4n p\u00e4\u00e4tteeksi olisi j\u00e4rjestetty iltajuhla. Et\u00e4tapahtumassa p\u00e4iv\u00e4n p\u00e4\u00e4tti kulttuuriohjelma, jossa esiintyi Stand up -koomikko Iikka Kivi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Toinen p\u00e4iv\u00e4 – Ty\u00f6pajat<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

T\u00e4n\u00e4 vuonna ty\u00f6pajoja j\u00e4rjestettiin kaikkiaan seitsem\u00e4n laajalla skaalalla. Mukana oli mm. kuvailuun, tilastointiin sek\u00e4 tutkimusdataan liittyvi\u00e4 aihepiirej\u00e4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

TP1: Tutkimusdatan kuvailu, hallinnointi, organisointi ja niiden pulmat<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Ennen varsinaista ty\u00f6pajan alkua kuultiin lyhyit\u00e4 esityksi\u00e4 erilaisista n\u00e4k\u00f6kulmista tutkimusaineistojen ja \u2013datan hallinnan toiminnan kent\u00e4ll\u00e4. Ensimm\u00e4isen\u00e4 vuorossa oli ammattikorkeakoulujen puheenvuoro Eeva Klinga-Hy\u00f6dylt\u00e4 Haaga-Heliasta. Seuraavaksi Hannu Markkanen Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4n yliopistosta toi esimerkkej\u00e4 havaituista kipupisteist\u00e4 asiakkaan datanhaussa. Yhten\u00e4 haasteena h\u00e4n toi esiin kuvailun ja konversiot sek\u00e4 niiden kautta menetetyn tiedon. Esimerkiksi jos metatietoja kuvaillaan tutkimustietoj\u00e4rjestelm\u00e4\u00e4n ja siit\u00e4 edelleen muihin j\u00e4rjestelmiin, kaikkia tietoja ei pystyt\u00e4 konvertoimaan. Datapalveluiden n\u00e4k\u00f6kulmaa mukaan toi CSC:n kehitysp\u00e4\u00e4llikk\u00f6 Jessica Parland-von Essen. H\u00e4n esitteli muun muassa Fairdata-palvelukokonaisuutta, jossa kuvailutiedot siirtyv\u00e4t sujuvasti palvelusta toiseen, sill\u00e4 eri palveluiden yli siirrytt\u00e4ess\u00e4 yhten\u00e4 haasteena on ollut muun muassa aineiston elinkaaren dokumentointi. Viimeisess\u00e4 esityksess\u00e4 Kansalliskirjaston Liisa N\u00e4p\u00e4r\u00e4 kertoi tuloksia kev\u00e4\u00e4ll\u00e4 2021 pidetyist\u00e4 Kansalliskirjaston j\u00e4rjest\u00e4mist\u00e4 ty\u00f6pajoista. N\u00e4ist\u00e4 ty\u00f6pajoista aiheina nousivat neuvonnan tarpeen kasvaminen ja aineistojen jatkok\u00e4yt\u00f6n haasteet, koska aineistoja ei ole aina alun perin ker\u00e4tty tutkimustarkoitukseen. My\u00f6s kirjaston roolin selkeytys oli otettu esiin, eritoten tutkimusdatan kuvailuun liittyen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Esitysten j\u00e4lkeen siirryttiin pienryhmin\u00e4 varsinaiseen TP1 ty\u00f6pajaan, joka toteutettiin Flingaa hy\u00f6dynt\u00e4m\u00e4ll\u00e4. Kysymyksin\u00e4 pohdittiin oman organisaation roolia tutkimusdatan kent\u00e4ll\u00e4 sek\u00e4 tutkimusdataan liittyvi\u00e4 haasteita ja puutteita. Tulevaisuuden n\u00e4kymien suhteen mietittiin sit\u00e4, milt\u00e4 tutkimusdatan kentt\u00e4 n\u00e4ytt\u00e4isi vuonna 2030 ja miten vuoden 2030 tavoitteisiin p\u00e4\u00e4st\u00e4isiin. Haasteina mainittiin sek\u00e4 ammattikorkeakouluissa ett\u00e4 yliopistokent\u00e4ll\u00e4 resurssien puute. My\u00f6s tutkimustietoj\u00e4rjestelmien ja projektinhallintaj\u00e4rjestelmien kankeus tuotiin esiin yhten\u00e4 haasteena. Kirjastojen vahvaa roolia metadataty\u00f6ss\u00e4 tuotiin esiin, ja muuta (kirjaston) osaamista toivottiin n\u00e4kyv\u00e4mm\u00e4ksi. Tutkimusaineiston hallinta synnytt\u00e4\u00e4 uusia rooleja kirjastoalan ammattilaisille, jolloin my\u00f6s koulutusten t\u00e4rkeys tulee korostumaan. J\u00e4rjestelmien vaihtuessa on t\u00e4rke\u00e4\u00e4 huomioida datan s\u00e4ilytt\u00e4minen pitk\u00e4ll\u00e4 aikav\u00e4lill\u00e4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

TP2: Asiakastoiminen Varastokirjasto-\/kaukolainatilaus<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Avauspuheenvuorossaan Varastokirjaston johtaja Johanna Vesterinen esitteli Varastokirjaston Airut-hankkeen. Sen tavoitteena on Varastokirjaston aineistoon kohdistuvan kaukolainauksen yksinkertaistaminen erilaisista kirjastoj\u00e4rjestelmist\u00e4. Asiakas voisi tilata aineistoa Varastokirjastosta joko suoraan omasta kirjastoj\u00e4rjestelm\u00e4st\u00e4\u00e4n tai kirjastossa virkailija voisi tehd\u00e4 t\u00e4m\u00e4n asiakkaan puolesta. Ty\u00f6pajaty\u00f6skentelyss\u00e4 tavoitteena oli saada lis\u00e4\u00e4 ideoita ja k\u00e4yt\u00e4nn\u00f6n vinkkej\u00e4 hankkeen toteuttamiseen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aluksi kuultiin Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4n kaupunginkirjaston ja Helsingin yliopiston kirjaston alustukset. Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4n kaupunginkirjasto on pyrkinyt lis\u00e4\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n omatoimisuutta, kun asiakas tilaa aineistoa Varastokirjastosta.  Helsingin yliopiston kirjasto puolestaan on ottanut Alman kaukopalveluohjelmistokseen sek\u00e4 l\u00e4hett\u00e4v\u00e4ss\u00e4 ett\u00e4 pyyt\u00e4v\u00e4ss\u00e4 kaukopalvelussa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ty\u00f6pajassa keskusteltiin painettujen aineistojen tulevaisuudesta, tilausten logistiikasta, asiakastoimisen tilaamisen toteuttamisesta ja erilaisista teknisist\u00e4 ratkaisuista kaukopalveluty\u00f6n sujuvoittamisessa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

TP3: Ajankohtaisia kuvailuasioita KUMEAlta<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Kuvailevan metatiedon asiantuntijaryhm\u00e4n (KUMEA) koordinoimassa ty\u00f6pajassa k\u00e4siteltiin kuvailun ajankohtaisia ja tulevia muutoksia sek\u00e4 k\u00e4ytiin l\u00e4pi k\u00e4yt\u00e4nn\u00f6n kuvailuteht\u00e4vi\u00e4. Ty\u00f6pajan aluksi kuultiin KUMEAn pienryhmien tuoreita kuulumisia, mink\u00e4 j\u00e4lkeen k\u00e4siteltiin sidosasutietojen merkint\u00e4tapaan tullutta muutosta. Kuvailussa tullaan jatkossa korvaamaan sidosasuja kuvailevat termit kansityyppej\u00e4 kuvailevilla termeill\u00e4, esimerkiksi sidottu on kovakantinen, nidottu pehme\u00e4kantinen ja rengaskirja kierreselk\u00e4. Muutoksen tarve syntyi painettujen teosten monipuolistuneista muodoista, jolloin saattaa olla haastavaa m\u00e4\u00e4ritt\u00e4\u00e4 sidosasutietoja. Samanlaisia kansityyppej\u00e4 kuvailevia termej\u00e4 on jo n\u00e4kynyt ulkomaisten tietokantojen tietueissa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mentimeter-sivuston avulla kartoitettiin osallistujien ajatuksia siit\u00e4, tulisiko saman nimekkeen erilaisille sidosasuille tehd\u00e4 oma tietueensa sek\u00e4 millaisia hy\u00f6tyj\u00e4 tai haittoja t\u00e4st\u00e4 syntyisi. T\u00e4m\u00e4n j\u00e4lkeen eri toimijat kertoivat n\u00e4k\u00f6kulmansa asiasta: erilaisia ajatuksia kuultiin yleisten ja tieteellisten kirjastojen sek\u00e4 Finnan ja Melindan edustajilta. Puheenvuoroissa korostui asiakasn\u00e4k\u00f6kulma: esimerkiksi osa asiakkaista ei v\u00e4ltt\u00e4m\u00e4tt\u00e4 halua taskukirjaa eli pokkaria, sill\u00e4 kirjasinkoko on n\u00e4iss\u00e4 yleens\u00e4 pienemp\u00e4\u00e4 ja osalle siten hankalalukuista. Toisaalta pohdittiin, hankaloittavatko eri tietueet varaamista eritoten kurssikirjojen osalta, jos sidosasulla ei ole asiakkaalle merkityst\u00e4. T\u00e4rke\u00e4\u00e4 olisi kuitenkin pysy\u00e4 yhten\u00e4isiss\u00e4 k\u00e4yt\u00e4nteiss\u00e4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ty\u00f6pajan viimeisess\u00e4 osiossa tarkasteltiin kuvailun ennakkoteht\u00e4v\u00e4\u00e4, jonka kirjastot olivat palauttaneet etuk\u00e4teen. Teht\u00e4v\u00e4ss\u00e4 oli tarkoituksena l\u00f6yt\u00e4\u00e4 ja korjata teosten, ekspressioiden (teosten sis\u00e4lt\u00f6jen ilmenemis- tai esitysmuotojen) ja p\u00e4\u00e4vastuullisten tekij\u00f6iden tiedot mahdollisimman tarkasti RDA (Resource Description and Access) -kuvailustandardin mukaiseen muotoon. Ty\u00f6pajassa teht\u00e4v\u00e4t ja niiden oikeat vastaukset k\u00e4ytiin kohta kohdalta l\u00e4pi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

TP4: Kiinalaisen huoneen arvoitus: automaattisen sis\u00e4ll\u00f6nkuvailun arviointi jatkuu<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Kaista nelj\u00e4 oli nimetty lyhenteell\u00e4 AI ja kanavan ainoa ty\u00f6paja keskittyikin teko\u00e4lyn (AI = Artificial Intelligence) soveltamiseen sis\u00e4ll\u00f6nkuvailussa. T\u00e4m\u00e4 oli kolmas kerta, jolloin ty\u00f6pajaan osallistujat saivat arvioitavakseen aineistojen sis\u00e4ll\u00f6nkuvailutietoja. Sis\u00e4ll\u00f6nkuvailutiedot olivat joko henkil\u00f6iden tekemi\u00e4 tai Annifin<\/a> erilaisten algoritmien tuottamia. Lopulliset arviointitulokset tulevat my\u00f6hemmin, mutta alustavana tuloksena kerrottiin, ett\u00e4 ihmisen tuottamat sis\u00e4ll\u00f6nkuvailut arvoitiin edelleen paremmiksi niin kattavuudessaan, merkityksellisyydess\u00e4\u00e4n kuin laadussaankin Annifin tuottamiin kuvailuihin verrattuna. Ty\u00f6pajan loppuosa toteutettiin englanninkielisen\u00e4 ja sen aloitti Koraljka Golubin<\/a> (Linnaeus University) esitys sis\u00e4ll\u00f6nkuvailun laadun arvioinnista – teknisten haasteiden takia esitys tarjottiin YouTube-videona<\/a>. Onneksi Golub p\u00e4\u00e4si osallistumaan k\u00e4ytyyn keskusteluun. Toisena puhujana oli Mona Lehtinen Annif-tiimist\u00e4. H\u00e4n kertoi lyhyesti alustavaa tietoa Finto AI:<\/a>n testauksesta, jota oli tehnyt Sis\u00e4ll\u00f6nkuvailun asiantuntijaryhm\u00e4n<\/a> Automaattisen sis\u00e4ll\u00f6nkuvailun ty\u00f6ryhm\u00e4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

TP5: Suosittelupalvelut<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

P\u00e4ivien ohjelman mukaan t\u00e4m\u00e4 ty\u00f6paja k\u00e4sitteli enemm\u00e4n tai v\u00e4hemm\u00e4n l\u00e4pin\u00e4kym\u00e4tt\u00f6mien suosittelualgoritmien merkitt\u00e4v\u00e4\u00e4 vaikutusta digitaaliseen asiakaskokemukseemme. Toisaalta Finna-vision mukaan kulttuuriperint\u00f6organisaatioiden tulisi parantaa digipalveluidensa asiakaskokemusta mm. \u00e4lykk\u00e4\u00e4mm\u00e4ll\u00e4 haulla, personoinnilla ja suosittelulla. Ty\u00f6pajassa perehdyttiin suositteluj\u00e4rjestelmien toimintaperiaatteisiin, k\u00e4yt\u00e4nn\u00f6n toteutuksiin sek\u00e4 keskusteltiin siit\u00e4, mink\u00e4laista lis\u00e4arvoa kulttuuriperint\u00f6organisaatioiden suositteluj\u00e4rjestelmien pit\u00e4isi syv\u00e4llisemmin ajateltuna  tarjota erityisesti Finna-palveluymp\u00e4rist\u00f6ss\u00e4. T\u00e4ss\u00e4 ty\u00f6pajassa ei kirjastostamme ollut osallistujia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

TP6: Korkeakoulujen yhteistilasto -ty\u00f6paja<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Ty\u00f6pajan fasilitaattorina toimi Matti Raatikainen (Aalto-yliopiston oppimispalvelut). Aluksi esiteltiin lyhyesti, miss\u00e4 yhteistilastoinnissa menn\u00e4\u00e4n, sek\u00e4 ehdotus siit\u00e4, miten nykyist\u00e4 KITT-kokonaisuutta on ehdotettu muutettavaksi. Alustuksen j\u00e4lkeen osallistujat (48 henkil\u00f6\u00e4) jaettiin kuuteen pienryhm\u00e4\u00e4n, joista kukin sai vastuulleen yhden osan nykyisest\u00e4 yhteistilastojaosta: A. Kirjastot, B. This time, the Library Network Days<\/a> (in Finnish) organised every two years by the National Library of Finland<\/a> were held as a fully remote event from 27 to 28 October 2021.\u00a0 The offerings were plentiful because the programme was available on four channels. On 26 October 2021, before the two-day event itself, the online seminar \u2018Digitaalisen kulttuuriperinn\u00f6n aika \u2013 katse kauemmas\u2019 (The time of digital cultural heritage \u2013 looking further ahead)<\/a> was held.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

First day \u2013 factual programme and discussions<\/bdo><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The event was opened by Cecilia af Forselles, National Librarian of the Finnish National Library. Teemu Roos, Professor of Computer Science at the University of Helsinki, was invited as the main speaker; his topic was<\/bdo> \u2018Teko\u00e4ly — Ensyklopedistin unelma vai Baabelin kirjasto?\u2019<\/a> (Artificial intelligence \u2013 an encyclopaedist\u2019s dream or the Library of Babel?). In the dream of the encyclopaedist in the 2000s, artificial intelligence has made the processing of large masses of data easier and faster in information searches and scientific research; it has automated logistics and introduced new possibilities in entertainment. The global growth expectancy of artificial intelligence\u2019s profitability is $15.7 billion in 2030 (PwC, 2017). In contrast, from the perspective of the Library of Babel, artificial intelligence is an incredibly powerful tool that also has questionable uses, such as profiling. From the perspective of democracy, there is a risk of data being concentrated in enormous platform economy companies. In addition, the complexity and opacity of the systems pose a challenge for regulation. Roos also presented the open online courses<\/a> related to artificial intelligence, offered by the Open University of the University of Helsinki.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The session on the management of e-resources had nearly 200 participants, and it discussed the importance of metadata in the management of e-resources with examples. Speakers included Ritva Nikola from the Oulu City Library and Aija Laine from the Helsinki City Library. Matti Sarmela from the Helsinki City Library acted as a facilitator. The management of e-resources was examined especially from the perspective of public libraries. There were discussions in Padlet, and the need to offer both e-resources and printed materials via the same customer interface was brought up. Currently, e-resources are usually offered via a separate e-resource link or similar.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Channel one continued with the topic \u2018Open access – t\u00e4ss\u00e4 ja nyt\u2019 (Open access \u2013 here and now) led by Jyrki Ilva from the National Library of Finland. The section was opened by Jussi Varkemaa from the Academy of Finland with current news about Plan S. After Varkemaa, Arja Tuuliniemi from the National Library of Finland continued the programme by presenting the development of transformative agreements in FinELib and their impact on open publication becoming increasingly common. From the openness of transformative agreements and publications in article format, the discussion moved on to considering open access to scientific books. On his last actual working day as the Director of the Oulu University Library, Pekka Olsbo talked not only about the challenges of open publication of scientific monographs and compilations, but also about the work done and currently in progress to promote the open publication of books.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, channel two discussed the Finto service. The Finto service<\/a> provides a way to use Finnish thesauri and ontologies. Jarmo Saarikko from the National Library of Finland showed how anyone can submit new proposals for subject words in the YSO<\/a> (General Finnish ontology) vocabulary. The second speaker, Joeli Takala from the National Library of Finland, talked about the open source Skosmos software developed by the National Library of Finland and used all around the world. Skosmos<\/a> (in Finnish) also acts as the background software of the browser interface of the Finto service.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next topic on the same channel two was current news about systems. Anne Koivisto presented the customer order module for orders from the National Repository Library, independent from library systems, that is currently being developed. As for Ari Muhonen, the Director of the University of Eastern Finland Library, he talked about the future outlook of joint statistics by university libraries. In addition, current information was provided about Melinda as well as the Koha cooperation.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After three o\u2019clock, channel one learned more about the new description policy of the National Library of Finland and the work on Finland\u2019s national bibliography in talks by representatives of the National Library of Finland. Marja-Liisa Sepp\u00e4l\u00e4 started the show by presenting the new description policy for the years 2021\u20132030. Katri Kananen expanded on the topic by including the relationship between the work on Finland\u2019s national bibliography and the description policy. After this, Satu Niininen provided more details about the structure of the national bibliography data and their use as well as the international principles behind the work on the national bibliography. The Chair Martin Engberg concluded the section and the day\u2019s factual programme by demonstrating the descriptions and principles of the national bibliography in practice.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the Library Network Days had been arranged as a face-to-face event, the first day would have ended with an evening party. Now, the remote event day concluded with a cultural programme, with a performance by the stand-up comedian<\/bdo> Iikka Kivi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Second day \u2013 Workshops<\/bdo><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This year, a total of seven workshops were held on a wide range of themes. They included topics such as descriptions, statistics, and research data.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

TP1: Description, management and organisation of research data and related problems<\/bdo><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Before the actual workshop started, short presentations were given on various perspectives in the field of research data management. The first speaker, Eeva Klinga-Hy\u00f6ty from Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences, presented the perspective of universities of applied sciences. The next speaker, Hannu Markkanen from the University of Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4, showed examples of problem spots discovered in the data search of customers. One of the challenges he mentioned involved descriptions and conversions and the information lost through them. For instance, if metadata are described in the research data system and from there on in other systems, converting all information is not possible. Development Manager Jessica Parland-von Essen, CSC, introduced the perspective of data services. Among other things, she presented the Fairdata service package, in which document description data are transferred smoothly from one service to another, because one of the challenges from moving across different services has been the documentation of the data lifecycle. In the final presentation, Liisa N\u00e4p\u00e4r\u00e4 from the National Library of Finland showed results of the workshops organised by the National Library of Finland, held in the spring of 2021. Topics arising from these workshops included the increasing need for advice and the challenges involved in the reuse of data, because the data have not always been originally collected for research purposes. Clarifying the role of the library was also brought up, especially in connection with the description of research data.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the presentations, the participants started the actual TP1 workshop in small groups; it was implemented with Flinga. The questions discussed included the role of one\u2019s own organisation in the field of research data and the challenges and deficiencies related to research data. Concerning the future, the groups thought about what the field of research data would look like in 2030 and how the 2030 goals could be reached. The lack of resources was mentioned as a challenge both at the universities and the universities of applied sciences. The rigidity of research information systems and project management systems was also brought up as one of the challenges. The strong role of libraries in metadata work was highlighted, and a desire to increase the visibility of (the libraries\u2019) other expertise was expressed. Research data management creates new roles for library professionals, meaning that the importance of training will also be emphasised. As systems change, it is important to take the long-term preservation of data into account.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

TP2: Customer orders from the National Repository Library\/interlibrary loan orders<\/bdo><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In her opening address, the Director of the National Repository Library Johanna Vesterinen introduced the Airut project by the National Repository Library. Its goal is to simplify interlibrary loans of the National Repository Library\u2019s materials from different library systems. A customer could order material from the National Repository Library either directly from their own library system, or a librarian could make the order on behalf of the customer in a library. The goal of the workshops was to find more ideas and practical tips for implementing the project.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Introductions by the Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4 City Library and the Helsinki University Library were heard at the start. The Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4 City Library has aimed to increase the independence of customers when ordering material from the National Repository Library.\u00a0 As for the Helsinki University Library, it has included Alma as an interlibrary loan collection, both for sending and requesting interlibrary loans.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The workshops discussed the future of printed materials, the logistics of orders, implementing customer orders, and different kinds of technical solutions for making the interlibrary loans work more smoothly.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

TP3: Current news about descriptive cataloguing from KUMEA<\/bdo><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The workshop coordinated by the Description standard group KUMEA discussed the current and future changes in descriptive cataloguing and went through practical description assignments. Recent news from KUMEA\u2019s small groups were heard at the start of the workshop, after which the change in the labelling of binding types was discussed. In the future, terms for different types of bindings in the description will be replaced by terms describing different types of covers: for instance, the terms hardback, paperback and spiral-bound will be used. The need for a change arose from the increasingly diverse formats of printed works, which can make the definition of a binding challenging. Similar terms describing cover types can already be found in the records of foreign databases.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Mentimeter site was applied to survey the participants\u2019 views on whether the various bindings of the same title should be given their own record, as well as what pros and cons this would bring forth. This was followed by various sources explaining their views on the matter: different thoughts were voiced by the representatives of public and scientific libraries as well as Finna and Melinda representatives. All the various statements emphasized the customer\u2019s point of view: for example, some of the customers might not want a paper back, as their font tends to be on the small side and thus difficult to read for some. On the other hand, there was concern whether different records would complicate reservations, especially when it comes to course books in cases where the bindings wouldn\u2019t matter to the customer. In any case, it would be important to stick to common practices.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The last part of the workshop focused on reviewing the preliminary assignment of the descriptive cataloging, that the libraries had returned in advance. The assignment included finding and correcting the information on works, expressions (the works\u2019 forms of appearance or expression) and principally responsible creators as accurately as possible in accordance with the RDA (Resource Description and Access) description standard. The assignments and their correct answers were visited one by one in the workshop.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

TP4: A Chinese room mystery: the assessing game in automated document description continues<\/bdo><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Channel four was named AI for Artificial Intelligence, and the only workshop on the channel focused on the application of AI in subject indexing. This was the third time that the workshop participants received document subject indexing data for their assessment. The document subject indexing data were created either by individuals or the differentAnnif<\/a> algorithms. The final assessment results will be made available later, but the initial results reported that human-generated document subject indexing were still considered to be better with regard to both comprehensiveness and meaningfulness as well as their quality compared to the subject indexing generated by Annif. The end of the workshop was implemented in English, and it started with a presentation by Koraljka Golub<\/a> (Linnaeus University) on the quality evaluation of subject indexing\u2013 due to technical challenges, the presentation was offered as a YouTube video<\/a>. Fortunately, Golub was able to participate in the discussion. The second speaker was Mona Lehtinen from the Annif team. She gave a brief introduction to the testing of the Finto AI,<\/a> which had been conducte.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

TP5: Recommendation services<\/bdo><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In accordance with the event programme, this workshop discussed the significant impact of the opaque recommendation algorithms on our digital customer experience. According to the Finna vision, it is also true that cultural heritage organisations should improve the customer experience of their digital services by means such as a smarter search, personalisation, and recommendations. The workshop studied the operating principles of recommendation systems and their practical implementations, and discussed what kind of added value, when looking deeper, the recommendation systems of cultural heritage organisations should offer, especially in the Finna service environment. There were no participants from our library in this workshop.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

TP6: Joint statistics of higher education institutions \u2013 workshop<\/bdo><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Matti Raatikainen (Learning Services, Aalto University) acted as the workshop facilitator. At the start, there was a brief presentation on what is happening in joint statistics, as well as a proposal for changes in the Finnish Research Library Statistics Database (KITT). After the introduction, the participants (48 people) were divided into six small groups, each of which was assigned one part of the current division of joint statistics: A. Libraries,\u00a0B. Collections,\u00a0C. Library use and users,\u00a0D. Opening times and facilities,\u00a0E. Finances, and\u00a0F. Staff.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The small groups discussed the section assigned to the group and recorded the observations made in presemo. Comments on the other sections could also be made freely via presemo, if the participants wished. After working in small groups, everyone reviewed all comments received together; the consensus was that the suggestions made in advance, especially the liberal pruning of matters included in the statistics in many areas, were successful.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

TP7: Identifier workshop<\/bdo><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Identifiers are related to either materials or persons and organisations. Material identifiers are used in identifying and processing publications and ensuring their retrievability. Of material identifiers, the ones presented included the ISBN (International Standard Book Number), ISSN (International Standard Serial Number), ISMN (International Standard Music Number), ISIL (International Standard Identifier for Libraries and Related Organizations) and ISNI (International Standard Name Identifier) provided for Finland by theidentifier services of the National Library of Finland<\/a> (in Finnish). Similarly, identifiers linked to people and organisations make it easier to identify and find their targets. Identifiers are often used in different information systems, meaning that they are often in numerical format. Out of people and organisation identifiers, ORCID<\/a> and ROR<\/a> (Research Organization Registry Community) were also presented. Functional identifiers, URN (Uniform Resource Name) and DOI (Digital Object Identifier), are unique and permanent identifiers that can be read automatically and that can contain information, such as location data. Juha Hakala from the National Library of Finland presented the new guide on identifying electronic publications \u2018Elektronisten julkaisujen identifiointi\u2019<\/a> (in Finnish), which includes basic information about how to use functional identifiers in identifying electronic publications.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Library Network Days were interesting and rewarding, and they provided people with ideas for their own work. Holding the days as a remote event worked well, taking the circumstances into account. Hopefully, next time in 2023 we will be able to see each other face to face.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n
