Tutkimusdataan liittyvien ammattien ja asiantuntijuuksien m\u00e4\u00e4rittely ei ole viel\u00e4 vakiintunut. Joillain tutkimusaloilla data-ammattilaisia on ty\u00f6llistetty jo vuosikymmeni\u00e4, joillain ei edes tunnisteta sellaisten tarvetta. Ammattinimikkeit\u00e4 ja ty\u00f6teht\u00e4vien osaamissis\u00e4lt\u00f6j\u00e4 on runsaasti. On datamanageria, data stewardia, data-analyytikkoa, data championia ja tietoasiantuntijaa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tutkimuksen yhteydess\u00e4 tutkimusaineistojen asiantuntijuuteen kuuluu keskeisesti niiden hallinnan laaja-alainen ymm\u00e4rrys avoimen tieteen periaatteiden mukaisesti. T\u00e4ll\u00f6in asiantuntijuuteen ei kuulu ainoastaan \u2013 tai v\u00e4ltt\u00e4m\u00e4tt\u00e4 ollenkaan \u2013 teknisluonteinen datan k\u00e4sittely, vaikka sellainen herk\u00e4sti liitet\u00e4\u00e4nkin kaikkiin data-alkuisiin nimikkeisiin. L\u00e4ht\u00f6oletuksena on, ett\u00e4 tutkija on vastuussa itse omasta aineistostaan. Tutkija saattaa kuitenkin tarvita apua tutkimuksen ja tutkimusaineiston elinkaaren vaiheissa. Erityisen t\u00e4rke\u00e4\u00e4 on pit\u00e4\u00e4 mieless\u00e4, ett\u00e4 tutkija on oman tutkimusaineistonsa erityisasiantuntija v\u00e4hint\u00e4\u00e4nkin sis\u00e4ll\u00f6llisesti. T\u00e4m\u00e4 saattaa j\u00e4\u00e4d\u00e4 helposti syrj\u00e4\u00e4n data-asiantuntijuuksien keskustelusta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

T\u00e4ss\u00e4 blogikirjoituksessa pohdimme tutkimusaineistojen asiantuntijuuden monia kasvoja ja houkuttelemme tutkijoita tuomaan esiin omia aineistonhallinnan tarpeita, toiveita ja turhautumisia. T\u00e4h\u00e4n on hyv\u00e4 tilaisuus OA-viikolla 27.10.2021 j\u00e4rjestett\u00e4v\u00e4ss\u00e4 ty\u00f6pajassa tutkijoille Tutkijoiden dataosaaminen ja -tarpeet esiin<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tutkijat ja organisaatiot m\u00e4\u00e4rittelem\u00e4ss\u00e4 datanhallinnan palveluja ja osaamisen sis\u00e4lt\u00f6j\u00e4<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Kunnianhimoinen tavoite tutkimusdatan, tai v\u00e4hint\u00e4\u00e4n sit\u00e4 kuvailevan metadatan, avaamiseen FAIR-periaatteiden<\/a> mukaisesti konkretisoituu lis\u00e4\u00e4ntyneen\u00e4 tarpeena kehitt\u00e4\u00e4 tutkimusorganisaatioiden datanhallinnan tukipalveluita. T\u00e4h\u00e4n liittyy erottamattomasti my\u00f6s tarve monipuolistaa tutkijoiden datanhallintaa t\u00e4ydent\u00e4vi\u00e4 ja avustavia asiantuntijuuksia. Vaikka FAIR-kirjainyhdistelm\u00e4 on ehk\u00e4p\u00e4 jo monelle tuttu, sen merkityssis\u00e4lt\u00f6 saattaa olla k\u00e4yt\u00e4nn\u00f6n toteutusten osalta h\u00e4m\u00e4r\u00e4n peitossa. FAIR-toimintakulttuuri viittaa tutkimusaineistojen osalta niin kutsuttuihin FAIR-dataobjekteihin, jotka ovat helposti l\u00f6ydett\u00e4viss\u00e4 (Findable), saavutettavissa (Accessible), yhteentoimivia (Interoperable) ja uudelleenk\u00e4ytett\u00e4viss\u00e4 (Reusable). Tutkimusaineistojen avoimuuden palveluiden kehitysty\u00f6ss\u00e4 pyrit\u00e4\u00e4n edist\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n tutkimusyhteis\u00f6jen ja tutkijoiden mahdollisuuksia tuottaa FAIR-periaatteiden mukaista dataa ja metadataa, joita avaamalla tietoa voidaan hy\u00f6dynt\u00e4\u00e4 ja vertailla niin kansallisella kuin kansainv\u00e4lisell\u00e4 tasolla muun muassa European Open Science Cloud<\/a> (EOSC) -pilvipalveluiden v\u00e4lityksell\u00e4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kansallisella tasolla on ty\u00f6stetty tavoitteita ja toimenpiteit\u00e4 tutkimusaineistojen avoimuuden palveluista organisaatioissa osana avoimen FAIR-toimintakulttuurin edist\u00e4mist\u00e4. Esimerkiksi kev\u00e4\u00e4ll\u00e4 2021 julkaistussa, tutkimusaineistojen avointa saatavuutta k\u00e4sittelev\u00e4ss\u00e4 linjauksessa todetaan, ett\u00e4 \u201dtutkijoilla on k\u00e4ytett\u00e4viss\u00e4\u00e4n vastuullisen aineistonhallinnan mahdollistavat infrastruktuurit ja palvelut, ja niit\u00e4 kehitet\u00e4\u00e4n tutkijoiden tarpeet huomioiden taloudellisesti kest\u00e4v\u00e4ll\u00e4 tavalla<\/em>\u201d (Tutkimusaineistojen ja -menetelmien avoimen saatavuuden linjaus<\/a>, osalinjaus 1, s. 11).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Periaate asettaa monella tavoin kovat tavoitteet tutkimusorganisaatioille, jotka linjausten mukaan vastaavat tutkijoiden tarvitsemien infrastruktuurien ja palvelujen tuottamisesta. Mit\u00e4 palveluja pit\u00e4isi olla tarjolla, millaista infraa ja asiantuntemusta tarvitaan ja mik\u00e4 yksikk\u00f6 t\u00e4st\u00e4 vastaa? Periaatteen toteuttaminen edellytt\u00e4\u00e4 my\u00f6s tutkijoilta itselt\u00e4\u00e4n hyv\u00e4\u00e4 ymm\u00e4rryst\u00e4 tutkimusaineistojen avoimen saatavuuden ja hallinnan sis\u00e4ll\u00f6st\u00e4 ja toteuttamisesta, jotta he pystyv\u00e4t ylip\u00e4\u00e4t\u00e4\u00e4n kertomaan omat tarpeensa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Datanhallinnan ammattilaisia ja asiantuntijoita<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Tutkimusaineistojen hallinnan kokonaisuus on sirpaleinen. Tutkimusaineistoihin ja -dataan kohdistuu lukuisia toimenpiteit\u00e4 ennen tutkimusta, sen aikana ja tutkimuksen j\u00e4lkeen, ja n\u00e4m\u00e4 toimenpiteet voivat erota merkitt\u00e4v\u00e4sti tieteenalasta ja aineistotyypist\u00e4 toiseen. Tutkimusorganisaatiot voivat olla hyvinkin erilaisia valtiosta, lains\u00e4\u00e4d\u00e4nn\u00f6llisest\u00e4 asemasta ja tieteenalasta riippuen. Kaikki t\u00e4m\u00e4 heijastuu tutkimusdatan hallintaan liittyviss\u00e4 ammateissa ja asiantuntijuuksissa, joiden m\u00e4\u00e4rittely on joidenkin asiantuntijuuksien kohdalla vakiintumassa mutta kautta linjan ty\u00f6teht\u00e4viss\u00e4 ja nimikkeiss\u00e4 on viel\u00e4 paljon kirjoa organisaatioiden r\u00e4\u00e4t\u00e4l\u00f6idess\u00e4 ty\u00f6teht\u00e4vi\u00e4 omien tarpeidensa mukaan. Ammattinimikkeit\u00e4 ja ty\u00f6teht\u00e4vien osaamissis\u00e4lt\u00f6j\u00e4 on runsaasti ja teht\u00e4v\u00e4t voivat perustua kokoaikaisuuteen tai osa-aikaisuuteen. Monissa organisaatioissa on jo vakiintuneempaa toimintaa, jossa datatuen peruspalveluita tuottavat yhteisty\u00f6ss\u00e4 kirjaston tietoasiantuntijat sek\u00e4 IT- ja lakipalveluiden asiantuntijat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yhten\u00e4 esimerkkin\u00e4 tyypillisesti kokoaikaisina organisaatioihin palkattavista data-asiantuntijoista ovat datamanagerit. Datamanagerit ty\u00f6skentelev\u00e4t yliopistoissa ja tutkimusorganisaatioissa eritoten kliinisten tutkimusten tukena sek\u00e4 monitieteisiss\u00e4 tutkimusprojekteissa, joissa ker\u00e4t\u00e4\u00e4n suuria datam\u00e4\u00e4ri\u00e4. Datamanagerin keskeisiin ty\u00f6teht\u00e4viin sis\u00e4ltyy tyypillisesti datatietokantojen yll\u00e4pitoa ja tietokantoihin tulevan datan hallinnointia niin, ett\u00e4 sen ominaisuudet t\u00e4ytt\u00e4v\u00e4t tutkimusryhm\u00e4n tai organisaation datalle asettamat keskeiset vaatimukset. Datamanagereilla on usein keskeinen rooli jo datan keruun suunnittelussa ja kehitysty\u00f6ss\u00e4, jolloin he voivat osaltaan varmistaa ker\u00e4tyn datan yhteensopivuuden ja laadun. Datamanageri on usein sidoksissa tiettyyn tai tiettyihin tutkimushankkeisiin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Osa-aikaisina datan hallinnan asiantuntijoina ja tukihenkil\u00f6in\u00e4 n\u00e4ytt\u00e4ytyv\u00e4t useissa yliopistoissa niin kutsutut data championit tai data agentit. Toiminnalla on pyritty vastaamaan tieteenalakohtaisen datanhallinnan tuen tarpeeseen rekrytoimalla joko vapaaehtoisina tai osa-aikaisella pestill\u00e4 erityisesti tutkijoita ja muita datanhallinnan osaajia k\u00e4ytt\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n tietyn osan ty\u00f6ajastaan muiden tutkimusyhteis\u00f6n j\u00e4senten tukemiseen ja kouluttamiseen datanhallinnan eri osa-alueilla. Kun mukaan saadaan tutkijoita eri aloilta, pystyt\u00e4\u00e4n hy\u00f6dynt\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n my\u00f6s osaamista eri tutkimusmenetelmist\u00e4 ja ymm\u00e4rryst\u00e4 eri tutkimuksen vaiheista ja prosesseista. Er\u00e4\u00e4n\u00e4 vahvana teemana data championien roolissa on lis\u00e4t\u00e4 tietoisuutta FAIR \u2013 periaatteista ja niist\u00e4 konkreettisista teoista, joilla kukin voi omalta osaltaan soveltaa periaatteita tuottamansa tutkimusdatan hallinnassa. Data championeille tyypillisin\u00e4 ty\u00f6kaluina toimivat muun muassa ty\u00f6pajat, luennot sek\u00e4 datanhallinnan hyvi\u00e4 k\u00e4yt\u00e4nt\u00f6j\u00e4 kiteytt\u00e4vien tietopakettien kehitt\u00e4minen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tutkijoiden dataosaaminen ja -tarpeet esiin: ty\u00f6paja tutkijoille<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Edell\u00e4 kuvatut esimerkit erilaisista datanhallinnan asiantuntijuuksista ja ammateista liittyv\u00e4t my\u00f6s It\u00e4-Suomen yliopiston datatuen kehitt\u00e4mishankkeeseen<\/a>. Sen yhten\u00e4 keskeisen\u00e4 tavoitteena on kytke\u00e4 tiedekunnat ja niiss\u00e4 sijaitseva datanhallinnan osaaminen vahvemmin osaksi yliopiston datatuen muodostavaa moniammatillista asiantuntijoiden verkostoa. Hankkeessa tehd\u00e4\u00e4nkin nyt pohjaty\u00f6t\u00e4, jossa selvitet\u00e4\u00e4n datanhallinnan asiantuntijuuksia. T\u00e4m\u00e4 auttaa linkitt\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n datanhallinnan osaamista eri tieteenaloilla osaksi laajempaa, koko yliopiston kattavaa verkostoa sek\u00e4 kartoittamaan mahdollisuutta perustaa tutkijal\u00e4ht\u00f6isi\u00e4 data-asiantuntijuuksia \u2013 kuten data championeja \u2013 my\u00f6s It\u00e4-Suomen yliopiston tiedekuntiin ja laitoksille. Tutkijataustainen osaaminen t\u00e4ydent\u00e4isi siten UEFin tarjoamia tutkimusdatan tuen peruspalveluita.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Open Access -viikko 25.10\u201329.10.2021 toimii oivallisena foorumina avata keskustelua datanhallinnan arjesta kaikissa tiedekunnissa ja kaikilla tieteenaloilla. Kutsumme tutkijoita osallistumaan ty\u00f6pajaamme, jossa pohdimme tarkemmin eri tieteenalojen tutkimusaineistojen hallintaan liittyvi\u00e4 kokemuksia ja haasteita, ja miten n\u00e4iden pohjalta kertyv\u00e4\u00e4 tietotaitoa voitaisiin hy\u00f6dynt\u00e4\u00e4 laajemmin yli tiedekuntarajojen. The definition of professions and expertise related to research data is not yet well-established. In some research fields, data professionals have been employed for decades, in some the need for such is not even recognized. There are plenty of professional titles and job competencies, such as data manager, data steward, data analyst, data champion and data expert.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the context of research, expertise includes a broad understanding of the management of research data in accordance with the principles of open science. In this case, expertise does not include only – or necessarily at all – the technical processing of data although it is easily associated with all headings beginning with data. In principle, researchers are responsible for their own data. However, they may need assistance in the different stages of the research and research data life cycles. It is especially important to keep in mind that the researcher is a specialist in his or her own research data, at least in terms of content. This can easily be ignored when discussing data expertise.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this blog post, we discuss the many faces of experts on research data and call researches to share their needs, hopes and frustrations. For this, there is a good opportunity in a workshop on 27 October Uncovering the data skills and needs of researchers<\/a>. The workshop is part of the UEF Library\u00b4s events during the International Open Access Week.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Researches and organizations defining the services and the contents of expertise<\/bdo><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The ambitious goal for opening research data (or at least the metadata) in line with the FAIR-principles<\/a> materialises in a growing need for developing data support services in research organizations. This goes hand in hand with the need to diversify the data management expertise that complement and help the data management of the researchers.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bar is set high for the research organization; according to national and international guidelines, they are responsible for providing the information and services that researchers need. What services should be available, what kind of infrastructure and expertise is needed, and which unit is the responsible one? Moreover, researchers need to have a good understanding of the content and implementation of the management and open access of research data, so that they can communicate their needs.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Experts and professionals of data management<\/bdo><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The entity of research data management is rather fragmented. There are numerous procedures applied to data before, during, and after research, and these procedures can vary significantly depending on the field of research and the type of data used. Moreover, research organizations can be quite different depending on their country of location, legal status, and research foci. Such aspects are also reflected in the variety of research data management professions and experts. Some data management professions have started to become more established, while overall there is still quite an array of different job titles with somewhat overlapping work descriptions, as organisations tend to tailor expertise positions according to their specific needs. The professional titles and required qualifications are numerous, and the positions can be on a full- or part-time basis. Many organizations have already relatively established basic data management support services that are typically run as a collaborative effort between the library informaticians, IT-professionals and the law department.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

One example of data management professionals hired typically on full-time basis to organizations are data managers. Data managers work at universities and research institutes, especially in support of clinical research as well as in multidisciplinary research projects amassing large quantities of data. Database maintenance is one of the typical tasks of data managers, as well as making sure that the attributed of data flowing into databases complies with those prerequisites assigned by research group, consortium, or organization. Data managers typically have a central role already in the planning phase of data collection, enabling them to make sure on their part that the data to be collected is compatible and of adequate quality. Data managers tend to be embedded in a specific research project or projects.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In several organizations, part-time data management experts and support personnel can appear in the form of data champions or data agents. Data champion programmes are an attempt to match the need for discipline specific research data management support by recruiting researchers (and other personnel with expertise on data management) on voluntary or part-time basis to spend some of their working time in support of and to train others in different areas of research data management. The participation of researchers as data champions of different disciplines has the added benefit of bringing in expertise in different research methods and understanding of the various processes and phases of research. The role of a data champion is often closely tied to the overall theme of increasing awareness on the FAIR-principle, including sharing information on the concrete actions that each member of the scientific community can apply in managing the research data they produce. Among the typical tools of data champions are work shops, lectures, and developing information packages about the best practices of data management.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Uncovering the data skills and needs of researchers: a workshop for researchers<\/bdo><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The above-mentioned examples of data management experts and professions relate to a UEF project<\/a>, which aims at developing the data support services. Among the tasks is a stronger link between the current central data support services and the faculties with their discipline specific know-how managing data.\u00a0 Part of this work is to explore the possibility of developing a network of data champions in some form across the faculties and departments.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Open Access Week that takes place on 25\u201329 October offers a good platform to open the discussion about research data management issues on a grass root level in every faculty and in every research field. We invite researchers to take part in the workshop to talk about and share the experiences and challenges of research data management as well as to search ways to disseminate the knowledge and know-how across the different disciplines and faculties.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n
