Edelt\u00e4j\u00e4ni kirjastonjohtaja Jarmo Saarti kirjoitti t\u00e4ss\u00e4 blogissa 3.8.2021 otsikolla Miksi kirjasto on?<\/a> H\u00e4n kertoi intialaisen kirjastonhoitaja S. R. Ranganathanin laeista ja siit\u00e4, miten ne p\u00e4tev\u00e4t t\u00e4n\u00e4kin p\u00e4iv\u00e4n\u00e4. Kirjasto ei ole yliopistossa itsest\u00e4\u00e4nselvyys. Esimerkiksi Aalto-yliopisto on hajauttanut kirjaston toiminnot nelj\u00e4\u00e4n eri yksikk\u00f6\u00f6n ja Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4n yliopistossa kirjasto ja yliopiston kaksi museota yhdistettiin Avoimen tiedon keskukseksi. Jokaisen yksik\u00f6n pit\u00e4\u00e4 pysty\u00e4 perustelemaan olemassaolonsa joka p\u00e4iv\u00e4. Sill\u00e4 on oltava ydin, joka ei ole siirrett\u00e4viss\u00e4 muualle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kirjaston ydin on tiedon j\u00e4rjest\u00e4minen sek\u00e4 asiakkaiden tuntemus. Kirjastolaisten on tunnettava asiakkaansa, heid\u00e4n tiedontarpeensa sek\u00e4 yliopiston tutkimuksen ja opetuksen tieteenalat. Kirjaston on parhaimmillaan osattava ennakoida, mit\u00e4 tullaan tutkimaan ja opettamaan, jotta tarvittavat julkaisut ovat k\u00e4ytett\u00e4viss\u00e4 heti, kun niit\u00e4 tarvitaan. T\u00e4m\u00e4 toteuttaa n\u00e4kemykseni mukaan Ranganathanin toista lakia ”joka lukijalle kirja”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ranganathanin viides laki kuvaa kirjastoa kasvavana organismina. Parin viimeisen vuosikymmenen aikana kasvu on siirtynyt s\u00e4hk\u00f6iseen maailmaan. Kun viel\u00e4 90-luvun alussa kirjasto tilasi parhaimmillaan muutamia tuhansia tieteellisi\u00e4 lehti\u00e4, nykyisin niit\u00e4 on asiakkaiden k\u00e4ytett\u00e4viss\u00e4 kymmeni\u00e4 tuhansia. Vastaava murros on tapahtunut kirjojen kohdalla. Viel\u00e4 toistaiseksi lisenssiehdot rajaavat k\u00e4yt\u00f6n yliopiston osoiteavaruuteen, mutta toiveissani on, ett\u00e4 l\u00e4hitulevaisuudessa kaikki t\u00e4m\u00e4 aineisto on avoimesti saatavilla.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

T\u00e4llaisen valtavan tietomassan k\u00e4ytt\u00f6 edellytt\u00e4\u00e4 hyv\u00e4\u00e4 tiedon j\u00e4rjest\u00e4mist\u00e4. Googlaamalla l\u00f6yt\u00e4\u00e4 aina jotain, mutta kirjasto voi asiantuntemuksellaan luoda lis\u00e4arvoa asiakkailleen. Olennaista tiedon j\u00e4rjest\u00e4misess\u00e4 on metatiedon hallinta, ja se on kirjaston kovaa ydint\u00e4. Aineistojen kuvailu tietokantoihin auttaa asiakkaita suodattamaan itselleen t\u00e4rke\u00e4\u00e4 tietoa. Yliopiston omat julkaisut, tutkimusdata ja kohta my\u00f6s oppimateriaalit on kuvailtava, jotta ne l\u00f6yt\u00e4v\u00e4t k\u00e4ytt\u00e4j\u00e4ns\u00e4 maailmalla.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lukijan ajan s\u00e4\u00e4st\u00e4miseksi (Ranganathanin nelj\u00e4s laki) kirjasto ei vain j\u00e4rjest\u00e4 tietoa, vaan tukee my\u00f6s sen hankinnassa ja hallinnassa. Avoimen tieteen tuntemus on t\u00e4rke\u00e4 osa tutkimustaitoja, siin\u00e4kin kirjasto voi auttaa asiakkaitaan osaamisellaan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kirjasto on yliopiston tietovirtojen solmukohta. Se hankkii ja v\u00e4litt\u00e4\u00e4 aineistoja asiakkailleen, mutta my\u00f6s tarjoaa yliopiston tuottamaa avointa tietoa koko maailman k\u00e4ytt\u00f6\u00f6n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Siksi kirjasto on edelleen t\u00e4rke\u00e4 osa yliopistoa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My predecessor, library director Jarmo Saarti, wrote on this blog on August 3, 2021, entitled Why does the library exist?<\/a>”. He spoke about the laws of Indian librarian S. R. Ranganathan and how they apply to this day. I will continue with Jarmo\u2019s thoughts and explain why the library will be in the future as well.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is not self-evident that a university has a library. For example, Aalto University has decentralized the library’s functions into four different units, and at the University of Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4, the library and the university’s two museums were merged into the Open Science Center. Every unit needs to be able to justify its existence every day. It must have a core that is not transferable elsewhere.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The core of the library is its ability to organize information as well as knowledge of the needs of its customers. Librarians need to know their clients, their information needs, and the disciplines of university research and teaching. At its best, the library is able to anticipate what will be researched and taught in order to acquire necessary publications just on time. This, in my view, implements Ranganathan\u2019s second law, \u201cevery reader a book\u201d.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ranganathan\u2019s fifth law describes the library as a growing organism. Over the last two decades, growth has shifted to the electronic world. While in the early 1990s, the library at its best subscribed to a few thousand scientific journals, today there are tens of thousands of them available to customers. A similar revolution has taken place for books. For the time being, the licence terms limit use to the university\u2019s address space, but I hope that all of this material will be openly available in the near future.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The use of such a huge amount of data requires good information organization. Google always finds something, but with its expertise, a library can add value to its customers. Metadata management is essential in organizing information, and it is the hard core of a library. Describing materials to databases helps customers filter information that is important to them. The university’s own publications, research data and soon also the study materials must be described in order for them to find their users in the world.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

To save reader’s time (Ranganathan\u2019s fourth law), the library not only organizes information but also supports its acquisition and management. Knowledge of open science is an important part of research skills, and even here the library can help its customers with its expertise.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The library is a hub for university information flows. It acquires and distributes materials to its clients, but also provides open information produced by the university for use worldwide.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therefore, the library is still an important part of the university.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n
