The conference gathered together around 400 participants interested in open science from around 30 different countries. The presentations started off with our host inquiring after the speakers’ favourite places and things about their cities, establishing a feeling of interaction to the conference. In addition to the presentations, the remote conference included a poster session and Meet the Speakers events where participants could discuss with the presentation givers. The seminar participants also had the chance of taking part in a shared photo session via a Zoom link. Except for small technical issues (temporary connection interruptions and the cancellation of an American presentation due to a black-out caused by a snowstorm), the remote conference was a success.</bdo>

<bdo lang="en" dir="ltr">Several presentations highlighted the importance of open science and open data amidst the current pandemic. The Covid-19 crisis has truly shown the importance of openly available information in e.g. enabling fast research, finding reliable information and switching to remote working.</bdo>

<bdo lang="en" dir="ltr">As in scientific research in general, the funding for activities supporting open science is often project-related, posing challenges for the continuity and upkeep of established infrastructure and services. It is also a question of increasing awareness and changing prevailing conventions and attitudes. It is important that researchers and research groups are able to observe the benefits of open science. Top-down regulation rarely genuinely motivates the promotion of open science.</bdo>

<bdo lang="en" dir="ltr">The promotion of open science must also be included in the evaluation of researchers. The idea of creating an open science researcher profile with the help of various permanent identifiers and utilising it in the evaluation was also put forward in the conference. This discussion referred to the European University Association survey on research assessment and its relationship to open science. According to the survey, 80% of the respondents regarded scientific publications and 12% open science and open access (OA) to be very important in evaluating a researcher’s career. Open science is constantly taking great strides, so let’s hope that the survey is taken further.</bdo>

<bdo lang="en" dir="ltr">Currently, a significant share of research data gathered with public funding, up to 80% according to an estimate, is lost after the research is completed. We evidently need active measures and practices for preserving data for future needs.</bdo>

<bdo lang="en" dir="ltr">Incorporating open science into an operational culture requires effort from the research community and multidisciplinary environments in particular are required to observe the issue from different perspectives. The Faculty of Science of the University of Helsinki has established an open science working group that has produced recommendations to promote the issue. These recommendations defined a shared faculty operating principle: as open as possible, as closed as necessary. Furthermore, open science works are taken into account in staff performance reviews and other evaluations, and open science merits are included in the recruitment processes. The faculty also shares information about the best open science practices, produces training on them and arranges peer support in order to promote a culture of open science, while acknowledging the contents of open science in degree and doctoral programmes.</bdo>

<bdo lang="en" dir="ltr">Open science is not only a matter for researchers and support staff in science communities, but it also belongs to teachers and students. A research conducted in the Finnish universities of applied sciences in 2019 discovered that the teachers’ open science competence is lacking and few teachers have opened up their educational resources. There are also insecurities surrounding the licensing of materials and IPR matters. Open science training for teachers has already been organised, meaning that we are moving in the right direction. The national Library of Open Educational Resources, aoe.fi, also needs to be promoted. Teachers in higher education are key in promoting the production and utilisation of open learning materials.</bdo>

<bdo lang="en" dir="ltr">Some conference highlights:</bdo>

<bdo lang="en" dir="ltr">• UNESCO Open Science Recommendation (draft): The recommendation aims to offer an international framework for the policies and practices of open science.
