EOSC-Nordic<\/a>-hanke on jatkunut jo reilun vuoden ajan ja sen ty\u00f6paketit ovat saaneet aikaiseksi ensimm\u00e4iset tuloksensa. Ty\u00f6paketti 2, jossa me olemme aktiivisia, on selvitt\u00e4nyt kunkin osallistujamaan avoimen tieteen ohjelmaty\u00f6t\u00e4 ja valtioiden sitoutuneisuutta tutkimuksen avaamiseen. T\u00e4t\u00e4 tukee ty\u00f6paketti 3:n selvitys avoimeen tieteeseen liittyvist\u00e4 palveluista hankkeen osallistujamaissa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sis\u00e4lt\u00f6ihin liittyen ty\u00f6paketti 4 on tehnyt selvityksen hankealueen avoimen datan palveluiden FAIR yhteensopivuudesta ja kehitt\u00e4nyt sen arvioimiseksi FAIR kypsyysmallin. Hankkeen ty\u00f6paketti 5 on puolestaan m\u00e4\u00e4ritellyt paikallisia datahankkeita ja testannut niist\u00e4 datan siirtoa EOSC-alustan ja yksitt\u00e4isten palveluiden v\u00e4lill\u00e4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Avoimen datan palveluiden hallinta<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

EOSC:n tavoitteena on luoda toimintaymp\u00e4rist\u00f6, jossa tutkijat voivat joustavasti k\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 avoimen tieteen palveluita ja ennen kaikkea tehd\u00e4 uutta tutkimusta avattujen aineistojen ja menetelmien avulla.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

EOSC-Nordicissa on t\u00e4h\u00e4n liittyen valittu 10 pilottia viidelt\u00e4 eri tieteenalalta<\/a>, joissa testataan datan avaamista ja yhteisk\u00e4ytt\u00f6\u00e4. Niiss\u00e4 tavoitteena on osoittaa, kuinka temaattiset portaalit voidaan k\u00e4yt\u00e4nn\u00f6ss\u00e4 rakentaa hy\u00f6dynt\u00e4m\u00e4ll\u00e4 EOSC:n tarjoamia tallennus ja tietojenk\u00e4sittelyresursseja varastointi- ja laskentaymp\u00e4rist\u00f6n laajentamiseksi yksitt\u00e4isille toimijoille.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Laajat infrastruktuurit nojaavat t\u00e4ll\u00e4 hetkell\u00e4 kansallisiin keskitettyihin ratkaisuihin \u2014 Suomessa esimerkiksi CSC \u2014 ja tavoitteena on n\u00e4it\u00e4 hy\u00f6dynt\u00e4m\u00e4ll\u00e4 sek\u00e4 tehostaa ett\u00e4 laajentaa erityisesti avatun datan k\u00e4ytt\u00f6\u00e4 saman tieteenalan sis\u00e4ll\u00e4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

T\u00e4m\u00e4n toteuttamiseen liittyy paljon my\u00f6s juridisia ja valtioiden ja organisaatioiden k\u00e4yt\u00e4nt\u00f6ihin liittyvi\u00e4 haasteita, joita n\u00e4iden pilottitapausten avulla testataan ja selvitet\u00e4\u00e4n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mik\u00e4 EOSC lopulta on?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) tulee vastaan yh\u00e4 useammissa dokumenteissa, kuten UNIFIn avoin tiede ja data \u2013 toimenpideohjelma suomalaiselle tiedeyhteis\u00f6lle<\/a>, mutta mit\u00e4 EOSC k\u00e4yt\u00e4nn\u00f6ss\u00e4 tarkoittaa? Taustalla on globaali avoimen tieteen visio, jolla edistet\u00e4\u00e4n tieteen l\u00e4pin\u00e4kyvyytt\u00e4, lis\u00e4t\u00e4\u00e4n tutkimusdatan k\u00e4ytt\u00f6\u00e4 ja vauhditetaan innovaatiotoimintaa. Euroopassa kansainv\u00e4list\u00e4 avoimen tieteen visiota ryhdyttiin toteuttamaan ohjelmalla, joka sai nimekseen European Open Science Cloud, eli tuttavallisemmin EOSC. Se tarjoaa virtuaalisen ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6n, jossa on avoimet ja yhteen toimivat palvelut tutkimusdatalle. Ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6ss\u00e4 on mahdollista s\u00e4ilytt\u00e4\u00e4, hallita, analysoida ja uudelleenk\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 tutkimusdataa tieteenalasta riippumatta ja kansallisista rajoista v\u00e4litt\u00e4m\u00e4tt\u00e4. Suurimpana pyrkimyksen\u00e4 on yhdist\u00e4\u00e4 hajallaan olevat tutkimusinfrastruktuurit yhteentoimivaksi kokonaisuudeksi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

EOSC muodostuu erilaisista palveluista ja rajapinnoista. EOSC:n tarjoamilla palveluilla pyrit\u00e4\u00e4n helpottamaan tutkimusdatan ja tutkimusjulkaisujen jakelua erilaisilla alustaratkaisuilla. Se on er\u00e4\u00e4nlainen palveluiden markkinapaikka, josta tutkijat voivat valita haluamiaan palveluita ja\/tai tarvittavia rajapintoja tietojen siirt\u00e4miseen j\u00e4rjestelmien v\u00e4lill\u00e4. Palvelusta l\u00f6ytyy jakamiseen, l\u00f6ydett\u00e4vyyteen, analysointiin, datanhallintaan, tieteelliseen laskentaan, tallennukseen verkostojen hoitamiseen ja koulutukseen suunnattuja palveluita. V\u00e4ltt\u00e4m\u00e4tt\u00e4 emme tied\u00e4 k\u00e4ytt\u00e4v\u00e4mme EOSC-palveluita, kuten Eduroam, Zenodo, EUDAT-palvelut, CSC:n Pouta-palvelut ja Aila-portaali, muutamia esimerkkej\u00e4 mainitaksemme. Lis\u00e4ksi EOSC kokonaisuudesta l\u00f6ytyy turvallisuussertifikaatteja ja erilaisia rajapintoja, yhteens\u00e4 l\u00e4hes 300 erilaista palvelua. T\u00e4m\u00e4n kokonaisuuden luomiseen on Horisontti 2020 -ohjelmasta jaettu l\u00e4hes 600 miljoonaa euroa ja sit\u00e4 tullaan rahoittamaan my\u00f6s Horisontti Europe -ohjelmasta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Palveluita tutkijoille, mutta miten?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

EOSC tarjoaa viisi p\u00e4\u00e4asiallista palvelua eurooppalaisille tutkijoille: yksil\u00f6lliset tunnistus ja todennuspalvelut EOSC-palveluihin, suojatun ja personoidun ty\u00f6tilan, ajantasaista tietoa palveluista, toisten tuottamien tutkimusdatojen l\u00f6ydett\u00e4vyys, saatavuus, uudelleenk\u00e4ytt\u00f6 ja analysointipalvelut sek\u00e4 palvelut tutkimusdatan tuottamiseksi FAIR-kelpoiseksi sis\u00e4lt\u00e4en tallennuspalvelut ja pitk\u00e4aikaiss\u00e4ilytyksen. Suuren palvelukokonaisuuden haaste onkin saada tutkijat suuntaamaan palveluiden \u00e4\u00e4relle, eik\u00e4 se onnistu ilman markkinointia ja palveluiden esittely\u00e4. Saavutettavien tutkijoiden joukko on hyvin heterogeeninen ja viestin v\u00e4litt\u00e4minen osoittautuu varmasti haasteelliseksi. Viestiminen n\u00e4ist\u00e4 palveluista lienee osittain j\u00e4\u00e4nyt pohtimatta, ja toisaalta oikeanlaisen kielen, jota my\u00f6s tutkijat ymm\u00e4rt\u00e4v\u00e4t, l\u00f6yt\u00e4minen ei ole yksinkertaista. Tutkijat ja IT-asiantuntijat puhuvat usein samoista tarpeista eri termein, eik\u00e4 kumpikaan v\u00e4ltt\u00e4m\u00e4tt\u00e4 tule ymm\u00e4rretyksi.<\/p>\n\n\n

EOSC-Nordic has received funding from the European Union\u2019s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 857652<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The EOSC-Nordic<\/a> project has been proceeding for more than a year and its work packages have achieved their first results. Work Package 2, in which we are active, has explored the open science policy work of each participating country and the commitment of states to open up research. This is supported by the work being done in Work Package 3 on open science services in the participating countries.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In terms of content, Work Package 4 has conducted a study on the FAIR compatibility of open data services in the project area and developed a FAIR maturity model whereby it can be evaluated. Project Work Package 5, in turn, has identified local data projects and tested data transfer from them between the EOSC platform and individual services.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Management of open data services<\/bdo><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The aim of the EOSC is to create an environment where researchers can flexibly use the services of open science and, above all, to carry out new research using open resources and methods.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this context, EOSC-Nordic has selected 10 pilots from five different disciplines<\/a> to test data opening and sharing. They aim to show how thematic portals can be built in practice by leveraging the storage and computing resources provided by the EOSC to extend the storage and computing environment to individual actors.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Extensive infrastructures currently rely on national centralized solutions \u2013 in Finland, for example, CSC \u2013 and the aim is to utilize these both to increase the efficiency and to expand the use of open data, especially within the same discipline.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are also many legal and policy and governmental challenges to be overcome in achieving this goal; these will be tested and clarified through the pilot cases.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is ultimately the EOSC?<\/bdo><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) is mentioned in more and more documents, such as UNIFI\u2019s (Universities Finland, co-operational organization for Finnish universities) Open Science and Data \u2013 Action programme for the Finnish Scholarly Community<\/a>, but what does the EOSC mean in practice? The underlying theme is a global vision of open science that promotes transparency in science, increases the use of research data and fosters innovation activity. In Europe, this vision was implemented through a program called the European Open Science Cloud, or more familiarly EOSC. It provides a virtual environment with open and interoperable services for research data. In this virtual environment, it is possible to store, manage, analyse and re-use data regardless of discipline or national borders. The main goal is to combine decentralized research infrastructures into an interoperable entity.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The EOSC consists of various services and application programming interfaces. The services provided by EOSC aim to facilitate the distribution of research data and research publications through various platform solutions. It is a kind of marketplace for services from which researchers can choose the services they want and\/or the interfaces for transferring data between systems. The marketplace includes services for sharing, discoverability, analysis, data management, scientific computing, storage, network management and training. We may not be aware that we are even using EOSC services \u2013 these are Eduroam, Zenodo, EUDAT services, CSC\u2019s Pouta services and the Aila portal, to name just a few examples. In addition, the EOSC entity includes security certificates and various application programming interfaces, for a total of nearly 300 different services. Almost \u20ac600 million has been allocated from Horizon 2020 to create this entity and it will also be funded under Horizon Europe.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Services for researchers, but how will these be provided?<\/bdo><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The EOSC provides five main services for European researchers: a unique identification and authentication service and an access point and routing system towards the EOSC services, a protected and personalized work environment, access to relevant service information, services to find, access, re-use and analyse research data generated by others and services to produce research data in a FAIR-compliant manner including storage services and long-term preservation. The challenge of a large set of services is to encourage researchers to use the services. This will not be possible without marketing and promoting the services. The pool of researchers to be reached is very heterogeneous and getting a message across to so many researchers is challenging. Communicating about these services may have been partly overlooked and, on the other hand, finding the right kind of language that researchers also understand is not simple. Researchers and IT specialists often talk about the same needs, but in different terms, and may not necessary be understood by the other party.<\/bdo><\/p>\n\n\n\n
