Module 2: Discipline-specific information retrieval

Make sure you have familiarized yourself with Module 1 before moving to this one. 

To complete this module:

  • Go through the material from Introduction to Multidisciplinary databases 
  • Go through at least one of the discipline-specific sections
  • Do the assignment (Module 2) in UEF Moodle (opens in new window)

After completing Module 2 you:

  1. Know the most important scholarly databases in your discipline
  2. Know how to use various information search tools 
  3. Are able to conduct a comprehensive information search on your own topic

Introduction

There are different kinds of scholarly databases and search engines: 

  • Multidisciplinary databases, such as Scopus, Web of Science and UEF-Primo, are suitable for most disciplines as well as interdisciplinary searching 
  • Specialized databases, such as PubMed (health sciences) and MathSciNet (mathematics), allow for more targeted searching 
  • Every database looks a bit different and most have some unique features and exceptions. More about this is described in the following sections.
