It functions as a form of self-regulation by qualified members of a profession within the relevant field of study. Peer review methods are used to maintain quality standards, improve performance, and provide credibility. A scholarly peer review is often used to determine an academic paper\u2019s suitability for publication. Thus, peer review is a kind of a gatekeeper and serves as a source of constructive criticism offering expert feedback. CC-BY PLOS.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is&nbsp;open peer&nbsp;review (OPR) then?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Open peer review (Fig. 9) is a modification of several forms of the traditional scholarly peer review process. The three most common modifications to which the term is applied are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"1\" style=\"list-style-type:1\">\n<li><strong>Open identities<\/strong>: Authors and reviewers are aware of each other\u2019s identity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Open reports<\/strong>: Review reports are published alongside the relevant article (rather than being kept confidential).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Open participation<\/strong>: The wider community (and not just invited reviewers) are able to contribute to the review process.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>These modifications are supposed to address various perceived shortcomings of the traditional scholarly peer review process, in particular its lack of transparency and incentives (Ross-Hellauer, 2017). (2018) have proposed a list of ten considerations for OPR based on discussions with authors, reviewers, editors, publishers, and librarians, and provided a pragmatic hands-on introduction. Here is a summary of those considerations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"1\" style=\"list-style-type:1\">\n<li>Understand what kind of peer review you\u2019re dealing with<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Open peer review relies on, and encourages mutual trust, respect, and openness to criticism<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Open peer review enables constructive and efficient quality assurance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Open peer review increases transparency and accountability<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Open peer review facilitates wider, and more inclusive discussion<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Open peer review gives reviewers recognition and makes reviews citable<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Open peer review is gaining popularity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Open peer review offers learning opportunities and facilitates training<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There is room to practice open peer review even if it has not been formally introduced yet<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We need more analysis of and research on open peer review<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>We warmly suggest that you familiarize yourself with the paper entitled <a href=\"https:\/\/f1000research.com\/articles\/7-969\/v1\">Ten considerations for open peer review<\/a> (Schmidt et al., 2018) and read the details of the considerations above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Remember:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Consider open peer review as an option to open up your research.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>(8\/2024 KH)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\">Move to the part \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uef.fi\/ueflibrary-bors\/open-research-data\/\">Open research data<\/a>\u201c<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is peer review?
