The sound diary is one of the protocols we use in this village survey with local school children. Like any good student, I started mine on the first day of arriving in Lesconil, noting the first and last sounds I heard during the day, as well as the most and least pleasant ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But as I went to bed on the second night, I could still hear the same low-frequency humming of the mechanical ventilation that I had heard the night before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the morning, I was awoken in the middle of a dream by the sound, which I imagined was trawlers leaving the harbour for a day of fishing. I thought it must be 5 or 6 am. However, as I listened more closely, I noticed something strange about the sound: it wasn’t decreasing, as it should have been for boats sailing away. I realised it was, once again, the steady, breathless, ubiquitous and discreetly enveloping motorised ventilation of the contemporary-designed apartment we had rented. I also realised that it would be the first and last sound I would hear all week, and the most unpleasant one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But what about the most pleasant sound of the day? I slowly got the feeling that the questions in this sound diary belonged to an outdated protocol. Even today, we can be confronted with such basic quantitative enquiries (more or less pleasant), but Cresson\u2019s research has been developed on more qualitative methodologies precisely to avoid this poor scale of judgement. So what is the point in pretending that one sound is pleasant and another is not?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let’s consider one of the most common sounds in Lesconil: the sound of motorbikes passing by. Most people find this sound unpleasant, disturbing and irritating. Moreover, it bears little resemblance to the soundscape of a coastal village, to the extent that we have even excluded it from our perceptions and memories. Yet it is present in our archives from the year 2000 and still is today, so we could consider it one of Lesconil’s soundmarks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From this vantage point, we can observe the local youth and their rituals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pursuing the investigation, we discovered the place in town where these young motorised people used to meet. We were told that some of them even tampered with the exhaust of their machines to make a louder or different filtered noise. Finally, when talking to older people (those who complain about this unpleasant sound), some of them admitted that they did the same in their teenage years and loved it! So… pleasant or not?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To conclude this brief reflection, let’s consider an example that relates to Heikki’s questions about ambient music. At first glance, music could be classed as a pleasant sound. Whether you like a particular style of music or not is not the point here, but let\u2019s consider that we don\u2019t play or put music on to be unpleasant, even with a punk attitude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, when we consider background music and all the muzak we can hear in many bars, restaurants and other public places, it is interesting to note that most people don’t listen to it and filter it out of their conscious perception. In some situations, such as when you\u2019re having an intimate conversation with someone, music can be a distraction. Is it sonic pollution?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Strange, isn’t it? If we minimally define music as ‘any organised sound you listen to’, then in these circumstances, organised music becomes something you avoid listening to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is it pleasant or not?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is at this point that my personal socio-musicological musings begin…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pourquoi j’ai arr\u00eat\u00e9 mon journal sonore au 3\u00e8me jour<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le journal sonore est l’un des protocoles que nous utilisons dans cette enqu\u00eate villageoise avec les \u00e9coliers locaux. Comme tout bon \u00e9tudiant, j’ai commenc\u00e9 le mien le premier jour, en arrivant \u00e0 Lesconil, en notant le premier et le dernier son, le son le plus agr\u00e9able et le moins agr\u00e9able que j’avais entendu pendant la journ\u00e9e.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mais en me couchant le deuxi\u00e8me soir, j’ai eu dans les oreilles le m\u00eame bourdonnement de basses fr\u00e9quences de la ventilation m\u00e9canique que la nuit pr\u00e9c\u00e9dente. Le matin, j’ai \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9veill\u00e9 en plein r\u00eave par le bruit – que j’imaginais – de chalutiers quittant le port pour une journ\u00e9e de p\u00eache. Je pensais qu’il devait \u00eatre 5 ou 6 heures du matin. Mais en \u00e9coutant attentivement, j’ai remarqu\u00e9 quelque chose d’\u00e9trange dans ce son : il n’\u00e9tait pas dicr\u00e9ant, comme il aurait d\u00fb l’\u00eatre pour des bateaux qui s’\u00e9loignaient… <\/p>\n\n\n\n

J’ai r\u00e9alis\u00e9 qu’il s’agissait encore et toujours de la ventilation motoris\u00e9e de l’appartement contemporain que nous louons sur BnB : r\u00e9guli\u00e8re et haletante, omnipr\u00e9sente et discr\u00e8tement enveloppante. J’ai \u00e9galement r\u00e9alis\u00e9 que c’\u00e9tait et serait le premier, le dernier et le plus d\u00e9sagr\u00e9able des bruits que j’entendrais tout au long de la semaine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Qu’en est-il du son le plus agr\u00e9able de la journ\u00e9e ? J’ai peu \u00e0 peu eu le sentiment que les questions de ce journal sonore relevaient peut-\u00eatre d’un protocole d\u00e9pass\u00e9. Aujourd’hui encore, nous pouvons \u00eatre confront\u00e9s \u00e0 de telles enqu\u00eates quantitatives basiques (plus ou moins agr\u00e9ables), mais les recherches de Cresson se sont d\u00e9velopp\u00e9es sur des m\u00e9thodologies plus qualitatives, pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment pour \u00e9viter cette pauvre \u00e9chelle de jugement. Apr\u00e8s tout, \u00e0 quoi bon pr\u00e9tendre que tel ou tel son est, ou n’est pas, agr\u00e9able ?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prenons l’exemple d’un des bruits les plus courants que l’on peut entendre \u00e0 Lesconil : le passage des motos. La plupart des gens le trouvent d\u00e9sagr\u00e9able, d\u00e9rangeant, irritant. De plus, il correspond si peu \u00e0 l’image sonore d’un village c\u00f4tier, que nous l’avons m\u00eame \u00e9vacu\u00e9 de nos perceptions et de nos m\u00e9moires. Pourtant, elle est pr\u00e9sente dans nos archives de l’an 2000, et l’est encore aujourd’hui, si bien que nous pourrions la consid\u00e9rer comme l’un des rep\u00e8res sonores de Lesconil. En l’\u00e9coutant de ce point de vue, elle t\u00e9moigne de la vie et des rituels de la jeunesse locale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

En poursuivant l’enqu\u00eate, nous avons d\u00e9couvert l’endroit en ville o\u00f9 ces jeunes motoris\u00e9s ont l’habitude de se retrouver, on nous a dit que certains d’entre eux trafiquent m\u00eame le pot d’\u00e9chappement de leur machine pour faire un bruit filtr\u00e9 plus fort ou diff\u00e9rent, et enfin, en discutant avec des personnes plus \u00e2g\u00e9es (celles qui se plaignent de ce son d\u00e9sagr\u00e9able), certains d’entre eux admettent qu’ils faisaient la m\u00eame chose dans leurs ann\u00e9es d’adolescence, et qu’ils adoraient \u00e7a !<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alors… agr\u00e9able ou pas ?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Terminons cette br\u00e8ve r\u00e9flexion par un exemple inverse, qui peut \u00eatre mis en relation avec les interrogations de Heikki sur la musique d’ambiance. A priori, la musique peut \u00eatre consid\u00e9r\u00e9e comme un son agr\u00e9able. Que vous aimiez ou non tel ou tel style de musique, l\u00e0 n’est pas la question, mais consid\u00e9rons que nous ne jouons pas ou ne mettons pas de la musique pour \u00eatre d\u00e9sagr\u00e9able (m\u00eame avec une attitude punk).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cependant, lorsque nous pensons \u00e0 la musique d’ambiance et \u00e0 toutes les diffusions publiques de muzak que nous pouvons entendre dans de nombreux bars, restaurants et autres lieux publics, il est remarquable de constater que la plupart des personnes actuelles ne l’\u00e9coutent pas, l’\u00e9vacuent de leur perception consciente. Dans certaines situations, par exemple lors d’une conversation intime avec quelqu’un, la musique peut devenir une perturbation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Une pollution sonore ? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c9trange, non ? Si l’on d\u00e9finit a minima la musique comme \u00ab toute organisation sonore que l’on \u00e9coute \u00bb, ici, dans ce genre de circonstances, la musique organis\u00e9e devient un ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne que l’on \u00e9vite d’\u00e9couter… <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Est-ce agr\u00e9able ou non ?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
