Globally, 2-4 % of all pregnancies are twin pregnancies. In Finland, there were 43 882 births in 2024, of which 549 were multiple births. Twins were born in 543 families and triplets in six families. Multiple births account for 1.3% of all births in Finland. This has remained relatively stable over the years, as elsewhere in Europe. The information and support needs of multiple-birth families arise from parenting and meeting the needs of more than one child of the same age. Multiple-birth families are special families with individual needs that require individual solutions. Health and social care professionals in maternity and child health clinics and hospitals play a significant role in supporting the parenting and the growth and development of children in multiple-birth families, as well as in promoting the health and well-being of the whole family. Previous research has demonstrated the need for the development of multiple-birth nursing in different kinds of nursing settings.

Our new two-year project, ProMONI, meets this need. The project started at the Department of Nursing Science, University of Eastern Finland, from the beginning of January 2026. In the name of the project, ProMONI, ’pro’ indicates support, but refers also to professionals, while ’moni’ is a Finnish word with the meaning ‘multi’, referring here to multiples, and multiple-birth family. The aim of the project is to strengthen nurses’ expertise in evidence-based care and specialist practice related to multiple-birth families, to enhance safety, and to support the professional competence of nurses in a changing working environment. The project supports midwives, public health nurses, and nurses to develop into multiple birth specialists. The expert training organized during ProMONI project will strengthen the knowledge and skills of health and social care professionals regarding multiple births. This will facilitate more family- and client-oriented care and the development of maternity and childcare, leading to enhanced support, tailored information, and high-quality care for multiple-birth families. The project’s long-term impact will improve maternal health care and reduce maternal and infant mortality.

This innovative project, unique to Finland and internationally, involves the Department of Nursing Science at the UEF, the wellbeing services county of North Savo, educational institutions, and third sector actors. The ProMONI project team, formed by project manager Kristiina Heinonen, pedagogical expert Ari Haaranen, and project assistant Jutta Laurikainen, is grateful for this multifaceted collaboration and the support they have received.

There are more twins in the world today than ever before.
