Moi<\/strong> (hello)! Approaching the end of my stay in Joensuu a lot faster than I would like to, it is time to recap and tell you about all the great experiences I have made in Suomi<\/strong> (Finland) during the past four months. And while I must admit that my language skills in Finnish are still embarrassingly small, there are some nice, beautiful and curious little words that I would like to share with you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the moment, my favorite Finnish word must be kes\u00e4<\/strong>: summer! After months of cold and icy, yet exceptionally beautiful winter-wonderland-weather, the temperatures have turned around and Finland has put on it\u2019s pretty green summer dress. Within only a few days the ice melted off the lakes, the piles of snow disappeared (there were trucks helping with that), and the leaves started to grow. And yes, in Finish there is a unique word for the first, tiny, bright green leaves, and it\u2019s adorable: hiirenkorva<\/strong> (literally: mouse ears). Walking in mets\u00e4<\/strong> (forest) and among the koivut<\/strong> (birches) now feels like a completely different world. Sometimes I can\u2019t believe that it is only a few weeks ago that it was talvi<\/strong> (winter), and I was in those very same forests pursuing murtomaahiihto<\/strong> (cross-country-skiing) \u2013 one of the great Finnish hobbies I had never done before and came to love so quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

What amazed me the most when it comes to the Finnish working environment are the happy and healthy ways people are working together. Everyone I have met here has been interested in a genuine conversation and cooperation, people share laughs as often as they can and look after each other. This (together with the pretty Moomin<\/strong> souvenirs and other things I couldn\u2019t resist) will be what I take home from this experience, and keep dear to myself for my own (working) future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Living in Joensuu and working for UEF has not only been an amazing opportunity to learn, but to make new yst\u00e4v\u00e4t<\/strong> (friends) for life. One of my first happy Finnish memories is the 14th of February which in Finland isn\u2019t celebrated as a commercialized day for lovers, but with the words hyv\u00e4\u00e4 yst\u00e4v\u00e4npaiv\u00e4<\/strong> (happy friend\u2019s day). So much better, so true.  I have found my Finnish friends in many different places: in the office over kahvi<\/strong> (coffee) and pulla<\/strong> (sweet buns), during busy times organizing the brilliant SciFest <\/a>combining tiede<\/strong> (science) with taide<\/strong> (art), and \u2013 of course- in sauna<\/strong> (sauna).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, now I am departing with a heavy heart, for I will surely miss all these nice people, but at the same time I am already looking forward to the first time I can come back to visit Joensuu or welcome my friends back in my home town to tell them tervetuloa<\/strong> (welcome) in return!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What I want to say is kiitos<\/strong> (thank you) for all the great experiences, supervision, challenges, laughs, hugs, and memories I can take home. And maybe, lastly, \u201cno niin<\/strong>\u201d which (as I have been told) doesn\u2019t have one real translation, but usually just sums up your feelings in a particular moment. Be it \u201cokay, let\u2019s do this,\u201d \u201coh, well,\u201d \u201cyes, great,\u201d or \u201coh no!\u201d.  I feel like no niin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And for everyone who is so lucky to read this text even before a mobility to Joensuu, here is my top 3 list of things, no one should miss in this particularly beautiful place in the world:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yksi<\/strong>\u00a0(1): Meet the Fins. They are great! Drink\u00a0kahvi<\/strong>\u00a0with them and eat as many different\u00a0pullas<\/strong>\u00a0as you can. Those with the melted butter on top. And the sugar. And the strawberries \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kaksi<\/strong> (2): Be outside! It doesn\u2019t matter if you are visiting Finland in summer or winter, its nature is what makes this country so special. Kuhasalo, Utransaari, Lykynlampi, or Koivuniemi are close by, easily accessible and simply beautiful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kolme<\/strong> (3): Try everything that is recommended to you. Try all the sporty activities:try cross-country skiing, go hiking in the forest and swimming in the lakes (frozen, or not), try sauna, and snow-swimming-after-sauna. Try even Salmiakki<\/strong>. Honestly, the salty licorice is quite terrible to my taste. But you have to at least try. It also comes in chocolate, ice-cream, or beverages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
