Lesson from ERASMUS \u201con the move\u201d to Pharos University, Alexandria, Egypt<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although ever since the turn of the millennium, the mobility<\/strong> of students and researchers from all over the world to Scandinavia, more-closer to UEF has increased, however mobility for students\/ professionals to different medical Universities to Egypt from UEF<\/strong> is stagnated. Having the support of Erasmus+ mobility program between Pharos University in Alexandria (PUA)<\/strong> and University of Eastern Finland, I took off my winter boots and pulled on my moccasin<\/em><\/strong> when with dr. Aisha Banafa<\/strong> (early stage researcher at Institute of Dentistry), we were the first ever staff members from our University under the umbrella of ERASMUS Mobility prorgram, in Alexandria, Egypt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Visiting Pharos University in Alexandria<\/a><\/u><\/strong>, it was a great deal to recognize many untapped opportunities<\/strong> during our official meetings<\/strong> with Prof. Dr. Mahmoud Mohy El-Din \/President<\/strong> of Pharos University\/, Prof. Dr. Nourhan Fanaki \/Vice President<\/strong> for student affairs\/, Prof. Dr. Yehia Ashour, \/Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry<\/strong>\/, Prof. Dr. Fayza Eldaly \/Vice dean<\/strong> of the Faculty of Dentistry\/, Dr. Mohamed Ragab \/Secretary general<\/strong> of the University\/, Dr. Mennatallah Gowayed \/Chief officer of the international relations<\/strong> of the University\/ and Dr. Nancy Bedwani \/officer of the international relations<\/strong> at Faculty of Dentistry\/  to increase<\/strong>  visibility of our preclinical and clinical education and research at PUA, facilitating<\/strong> the breakthrough of deeper discussion in <\/strong>dental educational exports\/imports <\/strong>between PUA & UEF.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We tried also to discover and highlight<\/strong> possible common interest<\/strong> in dental applied research<\/strong> for the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I wish to believe that presenting our high-end educational and research competence at PUA during this mobility<\/strong> and receiving remarkably effective<\/strong> way their quality feedbacks and learning more about the facility and staff at Dental Faculty of PUA might promote further networking in education<\/strong>, bilateral exchange of professionals and the dental students which in the future might also end up in common research interest and projects.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After these brainstorming<\/strong> meetings it was also unique experience to discover <\/strong>the streets of Alexandria<\/strong>, the country\u2019s window onto the Mediterranean Sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are You interested on<\/strong> anything more about this \u201cOn the move<\/strong>\u201d in moccasin<\/em><\/strong>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You even might ask, why<\/strong> to travel<\/strong> to <\/strong>PUA<\/strong> from<\/strong> a University like UEF<\/strong> having so exclusive rank<\/strong>s<\/a>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I should tell you, that without personalized reporting is hard to summarize anything more, however might be the most important thing is,<\/strong> to answer why we visited PUA, in Alexandria. It is simple: we wanted to complete the professional mission<\/strong> agreed on earlier in an ERASMUS agreement between our Uni`s. I am happy to say, we reached our major goals, so I wish to believe our ERASMUS mission is completed<\/strong>. Moreover, during active and face-to-face dialogues to President of PUA, Secretary General, Deans, Professors, visiting dental clinical practices and giving lectures <\/strong>we were able to discover the similarities and differences in dental curriculums\/ practical issues existing between PUA and UEF education. So I personally feel that PUA<\/strong> in Alexandria at near<\/strong>-middle east<\/strong> and its dental education system is not as much far from our <\/strong>basic dental standards, <\/strong>as we expected before this trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

We were able to map <\/strong>and compare <\/strong>accurately the curricular content, teaching methods<\/strong> and assessment techniques, core facilities<\/strong> used in dental preclinical\/clinical programs at PUA<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Second, we had to took off our winter boots<\/em><\/strong>, because Egypt<\/strong> offers something of what Kuopio might not have it during early spring time: massive positive Celsius with vivid street life<\/strong> even after sunset.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Although I am having several 100s of thousands kilometer behind my back, as a driver from middle of (K<\/strong>)nowhere I felt challenging<\/strong> the everyday trafficking<\/strong> in Alexandria. There are thousands, if not millions, of trucks, buses, cars<\/strong>, motorcycles and pedestrians<\/strong> sharing the same infrastructure DAY & NIGHT<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second thing, that Egypt driver`s<\/strong> national anthem<\/strong>: car horns<\/strong>. Egyptian traffic is notorious for it. They use car horns to say \u201cHello<\/strong>\u201d, to warn \u201cWatch out<\/strong> I am merging into your lane whether you like it or not,\u201d and to shout \u201cWTF<\/strong>, why are you stopped<\/strong>!\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, a two-lane road<\/strong> is not actually a two-lane road. A two-lane road is often transformed<\/strong> into a three, four or even five lane road<\/strong> by drivers according to actual situations. In extreme cases cars are driven in \u201crandom\u201d directions while relaxed civilians crossing the street at the middle of nowhere<\/strong>, extra \u201cspiced\u201d with fiacres<\/strong>, as it shown below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our drivers<\/strong> were<\/strong> superb, accurate<\/strong> towards traffic rules and laws while our transportation, but after 3 days \u201con the move<\/strong>\u201c I started to agree with their statements \u201cA car in Egypt without any scratch or bump, is only exist in the showroom\u201d.Thanks God we did not increased \u201cbumps\u201d. So <\/strong>although the traffic looked for us a kind of endeavor but thanks to our expert dental drivers to dr. Mohamed Saad Islami and dr. Ahmed Yassen, we survived \u201con the move\u201d in <\/strong>Alexandrian traffic<\/strong>, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Third, in Alexandria<\/strong>, you\u2019re never more than a few steps<\/strong> away from<\/strong> the sea<\/strong>, which never freeze, so I really enjoyed to pull on <\/em><\/strong>only my moccasin<\/em><\/strong>. Entering the town even midnight (our flight arrived after 1 PM) was an invitation<\/strong> to fascinating insights into<\/strong> its proud past<\/strong> embedded, since only few cities of the world have a history as rich and glorious as that of Alexandria with so vivid present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The feeling continued next coming days when we could shortly discover<\/strong> the atmosphere of gripping mosques, the beach,<\/strong> the casino strip of the Corniche, some lovely ancient gardens<\/strong> with thriving markets and some more places shown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fourth, as a Dentist & Anatomist<\/strong>, to be at PUA offered me new experiences<\/strong>, which gained information motivates me for <\/strong>further fune-tuning <\/strong>of my on educational style<\/strong> moving on<\/strong> back to UEF<\/strong>.  You know \u201cAnatomist\u201d always have different instincts, \u201cage dependent experience\u201d, or derive more please for the process of education<\/strong> development than others, expecially if different cultural background does exist between parties, like Scandinavia and Egypt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At last but not at least<\/strong>, during the ERASMUS mobility travel we had even side effect<\/strong>: injecting something interesting and meaningful to our mind and explore<\/strong>d their non-obvious <\/strong>cultural influence<\/strong> on preclinical\/dental dental and medical education, which is sometimes more valuable that the brainstorming results itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taken everything together, if passion<\/em> drives you<\/strong>, you should <\/strong>visit PUA<\/strong> and Alexandria<\/strong>, since only few cities of the world have a history as rich and glorious as that of Alexandria, and PUA University might have developing connection to UEF in the future, so let reason<\/em> hold U\u00b4r reins<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We hope also that through a forming frame of bidirectional exchange we can say<\/strong> in the future to visitors<\/strong> from PUA<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
