The conference was held in M\u00fcnster, Germany.\u00a0The journey there turned into a 14-hour adventure, including seven hours of back-and-forth travel in German regional trains in over 30-degree heat due to disruptions in the German rail system.\u00a0Otherwise, the trip was successful and\u00a0a very interesting\u00a0experience \u2013 and it was quite a contrast to return home to Joensuu to rain and temperatures between 2 and 6 degrees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uef.fi\/oikeuttakohtuudella\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/06\/Screenshot-2026-06-23-at-14.03.03.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1010\" height=\"754\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.uef.fi\/oikeuttakohtuudella\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/06\/Screenshot-2026-06-23-at-14.03.03.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3101\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.uef.fi\/oikeuttakohtuudella\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/06\/Screenshot-2026-06-23-at-14.03.03.png 1010w, https:\/\/blogs.uef.fi\/oikeuttakohtuudella\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/06\/Screenshot-2026-06-23-at-14.03.03-768x573.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1010px) 100vw, 1010px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The conference took place in M\u00fcnster\u2019s\u00a0Speicherstadt, which functioned as\u00a0a logistics\u00a0and catering centre for National Socialist troops during the Second World War. The site included, for example, a bakery that once produced bread for tens of thousands of soldiers each day. The venue was strikingly fitting for a conference where questions of war and peace, and the safeguarding of human rights and democracy, were at the forefront.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uef.fi\/oikeuttakohtuudella\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/06\/Screenshot-2026-06-23-at-14.04.09.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1400\" height=\"1046\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.uef.fi\/oikeuttakohtuudella\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/06\/Screenshot-2026-06-23-at-14.04.09.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3102\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.uef.fi\/oikeuttakohtuudella\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/06\/Screenshot-2026-06-23-at-14.04.09.png 1400w, https:\/\/blogs.uef.fi\/oikeuttakohtuudella\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/06\/Screenshot-2026-06-23-at-14.04.09-768x574.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1400px) 100vw, 1400px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The inspiring keynote lectures by Audrey Osler, Marina Weisband and Annedore Prengel were delivered next to the massive wartime ovens. The keynotes offered a wealth of valuable insights into how peace, equality and democracy could be advanced by ensuring that knowledge of human rights is accessible to everyone through human rights education \u2013 not only to a privileged few, for example in the Global North.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My own presentation explored the integration of transformative human rights education and arts-based pedagogy\u00a0as a way to\u00a0foster creativity among law students in a turbulent world \u2013 one that\u00a0perhaps needs\u00a0courageous and solution-oriented legal professionals more than ever.\u00a0I conducted the study in spring 2026 as part of my course Legal Communication,\u00a0Creativity\u00a0and Influence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uef.fi\/oikeuttakohtuudella\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/06\/Screenshot-2026-06-23-at-14.05.20.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1570\" height=\"1178\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.uef.fi\/oikeuttakohtuudella\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/06\/Screenshot-2026-06-23-at-14.05.20.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3103\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.uef.fi\/oikeuttakohtuudella\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/06\/Screenshot-2026-06-23-at-14.05.20.png 1570w, https:\/\/blogs.uef.fi\/oikeuttakohtuudella\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/06\/Screenshot-2026-06-23-at-14.05.20-768x576.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.uef.fi\/oikeuttakohtuudella\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/06\/Screenshot-2026-06-23-at-14.05.20-1536x1152.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1570px) 100vw, 1570px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I had the pleasure of enjoying the conference dinner seated next to the highly esteemed pioneer\u00a0in the field of human rights education,\u00a0Audrey Osler.\u00a0I\u00a0immediately\u00a0felt that I was warmly welcomed into the international community of human rights education.\u00a0Conversations with scholars from different disciplines specialising in human rights were truly enriching and have already sparked plans for several future collaborations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uef.fi\/oikeuttakohtuudella\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/06\/Screenshot-2026-06-23-at-14.06.14.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1576\" height=\"1178\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.uef.fi\/oikeuttakohtuudella\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/06\/Screenshot-2026-06-23-at-14.06.14.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3104\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.uef.fi\/oikeuttakohtuudella\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/06\/Screenshot-2026-06-23-at-14.06.14.png 1576w, https:\/\/blogs.uef.fi\/oikeuttakohtuudella\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/06\/Screenshot-2026-06-23-at-14.06.14-768x574.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.uef.fi\/oikeuttakohtuudella\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/06\/Screenshot-2026-06-23-at-14.06.14-1536x1148.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1576px) 100vw, 1576px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On the wall of the conference venue, a text based on Article 1(1) of the German Basic Law was displayed: \u201cHuman dignity shall be inviolable. To respect and protect it shall be the duty of all state authority.\u201d It served as a powerful reminder of the history of the place and of how, during the Holocaust, certain groups were systematically targeted for destruction.\u00a0The text thus conveys a fundamental normative demand: that human dignity must be safeguarded for all people in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uef.fi\/oikeuttakohtuudella\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/06\/Screenshot-2026-06-23-at-14.07.39.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1438\" height=\"892\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.uef.fi\/oikeuttakohtuudella\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/06\/Screenshot-2026-06-23-at-14.07.39.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3105\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.uef.fi\/oikeuttakohtuudella\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/06\/Screenshot-2026-06-23-at-14.07.39.png 1438w, https:\/\/blogs.uef.fi\/oikeuttakohtuudella\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/06\/Screenshot-2026-06-23-at-14.07.39-768x476.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1438px) 100vw, 1438px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Regrettably, serious human rights violations continue to occur across the world, not least in the context of armed conflicts. In such situations, both human rights and the principle of human dignity are often entirely disregarded, highlighting the limitations of law and legal regulation in practice. Nevertheless, legal scholars can and should contribute to identifying ways to improve national, European, and global security and to prepare for emerging threats through legal regulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Complex crises and human rights challenges require approaches that go beyond traditional doctrinal legal analysis, calling instead for more creative and interdisciplinary thinking. This is something that should also be reflected more strongly in legal education.
