Educational paths are shaped by many individual, social and structural factors. For some, an academic career is a clear goal from an early age, while for others, an interest in research emerges much later. I know several people who ended up pursuing doctoral studies after being encouraged by their master\u2019s thesis supervisor or through working on research projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For me, the words dissertation<\/em> or doctorate<\/em> did not mean much on a personal level just a few years ago. An academic career had never even crossed my mind. Yet, through a series of planned and unplanned events, I found myself, after already spending many years in working life, studying in the master\u2019s programme in adult education at the University of Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4. That was when I became interested in doing research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
What\u2019s in here?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
A doctoral journey can begin through a research project or as the result of a determined pursuit of an academic career. In my case, curiosity has always been one of my compasses in life, and following it eventually led me to doctoral research as well. I came across something I wanted to understand and questions I wanted answers to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I strongly relate to how one participant in my study described it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI kind of start poking around in the dark cave to see what\u2019s in there. And then either it works out, or the bear eats you.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
I wanted to know as much as possible about ADHD in women, and particularly about what it looks like in the context of learning. However, the existing research could not satisfy my curiosity, and that is how my research idea was born: Highly educated women diagnosed with ADHD and their experiences of learning at work.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
The bear didn\u2019t eat me<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Around the same time that I decided to apply for doctoral studies, a doctoral education pilot funded by the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture was launched. I wanted to apply, but my research idea did not fit the pilot\u2019s priorities, so I adapted it to better match the themes of the call.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I still remember discussing my research idea and situation with Anita Malinen, a lecturer in adult education. At the end of our conversation, she hugged me and said: \u201cYou shouldn\u2019t have to give up your original idea, the one you truly feel passionate about. It\u2019s yours.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Those words stayed with me. Soon afterwards, I contacted my current supervisor, Soila Lemmetty at the University of Eastern Finland. She found my research idea interesting and was willing to become my supervisor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I didn\u2019t get a place in the pilot. But I did get a wonderful supervisor and a research and work community. And most importantly, I got to keep my own idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On unfamiliar ground<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
In December 2024, I received the good news that I had been accepted into the doctoral programme. I remember joining our research group meeting for the first time. I felt completely out of my depth. Everyone else seemed to talk effortlessly about their research in English and used academic terms I had never even heard before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Still, I felt very welcome, and becoming part of the research community turned out to be an incredible source of richness and support. Little by little, I began to see myself as a researcher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A deep dive into the data<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
During spring 2025, I prepared for data collection, wrote grant applications, and familiarised myself with the practicalities of conducting research. To my surprise, I received two positive funding decisions, and as summer approached, I began working full-time as a doctoral researcher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I spent most of the summer collecting data. I conducted 36 interviews, during which I had the opportunity to hear about the participants\u2019 experiences, thoughts, and stories. Conducting the interviews required considerably more time and emotional energy than I had anticipated, but the result was a rich and comprehensive dataset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
By autumn, I had nearly 50 hours of interviews waiting to be transcribed. I transcribed everything manually. At times, the work felt endless, but it also meant that I became deeply familiar with the data, which made the analysis process smoother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As the new year began, I started analysing the data using thematic analysis. I used Atlas.ti as a kind of \u201cworkspace\u201d for developing codes, groups, and themes, but carried out each stage of the analysis manually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
When curiosity became research<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
In February, I travelled to the University of Technology Sydney for a research visit. There, I presented the theoretical foundations and methods of my study, along with my first observations from the data.<\/p>\n\n\n\nPhoto: Mia Ahonen<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n
I was incredibly nervous about the presentation, but the experience became one of the most meaningful moments of my research journey so far. I received feedback, gained new perspectives, and became more confident that my research could also spark interest beyond Finland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During the spring and early summer, I read extensively and worked on the manuscript for my first article. At times, the writing was exciting and moved forward quickly. At other times, it was frustrating and painfully slow. But little by little, the manuscript took shape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In early autumn, according to my original schedule, I submitted the article to a scientific journal. Its current status is \u201cAwaiting Reviewer Scores\u201d<\/em>, so there is definitely some nervous anticipation in the air!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When I think about the journey from those first curious thoughts to where I am now, I realise that it has been about much more than simply doing research. Along the way, there has been a whole spectrum of emotions, coincidences, encounters, successes, and above all, an enormous amount of learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The first peer review, or hopefully the acceptance of the article, is only one milestone on the way towards the final destination. Still, this feels like one of those moments when I want to stop properly, look back at how far I\u2019ve come, and say: Following the compass was worth it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
