The anniversary theme, “Thriving Together: Impact, Innovation, and Inclusion in Business and Management”, emphasized the importance of fostering a collaborative and supportive environment within the business and management community, where individuals and institutions can work together to make a positive impact on society.

Royal Holloway

Management researchers had gathered to discuss a wide range of research topics, from strategic change in organisations to tourism and everything in between. My conference trip began with a stroke of luck, as I arrived in rainy London — how else could it have been — just in time on the last Finnair flight before a technical issue brought the entire UK airspace to a halt. Due to the system failure, the plans of several conference participants had changed unexpectedly, as flights had been significantly delayed and many had even been cancelled altogether.

The conference opening session featured several talks from both the private sector and academia. Coincidence seemed to show its sense of humour, as one of the first speakers was Steve Armitage, Head of Innovation and Intelligent Automation at Heathrow Airport. At the beginning of his talk, he naturally apologised for the fact that a considerable number of our colleagues were missing from the venue. With characteristically dry British humour and fluent turns of phrase, the situation was quickly acknowledged and moved past, after which Armitage gave an interesting presentation on the complexity of airport operations.

Another speaker was Professor Lynda Gratton from London Business School, who posed three human-centred questions, intertwined with working life and learning, about the future changes brought about by artificial intelligence:

How will people learn and become capable?

If AI makes experts six times more productive — what will happen to the time it releases?

What kind of working life will AI make possible?

The purpose of these questions was above all to stimulate the audience’s thinking, and Gratton did not provide direct answers to them — which, of course, is not even possible. According to her, however, the situation regarding the changes brought about by AI is not as fatal as some of the more dystopian scenarios sometimes suggest. I found myself reflecting especially on the relationship between independent thinking and AI. AI makes it easier, for instance, to produce texts and analyses, but it does not necessarily increase or improve thinking in itself. At worst, the opposite may happen, if part of the thinking process is outsourced to AI and the user no longer fully understands their own (?) outputs. What follows from this? How should we respond?

Opening session

The renewal of working life was also addressed by Janine Chamberlin, Country Manager of LinkedIn UK. She stated that 70% of the skills currently needed in working life will change by 2030 — in just a little over three years. A prediction that feels dizzying in its pace. Chamberlin also noted that, alongside AI and IT skills, the most in-demand working life skills at the moment include leadership, cultural and communication skills. My doctoral dissertation, which examines the connections between organisational strategy implementation, interaction and workplace learning, is therefore highly timely.

Discussions and Learning

Management research is a broad field, as reflected in the number of conference tracks: 31 thematic areas in total. In honour of the anniversary year, the number of participants was record-breaking, with more than 1,300 attendees and around 1,700 conference papers. Although it was a conference of the British academy, the participant group was highly international, with attendees from 74 different countries. This time, only the second person I spoke with turned out to be Finnish — not the first, as had happened at my previous international conference. A small world, a large research field.

Over the course of four days, there were plenty of parallel sessions, making it impossible to attend everything of interest. I participated in the Strategy as Practice track with my presentation “Psychological Safety and Learning Supporting Employees’ Strategic Attributes”. My micro-level perspective on strategic change, focusing on the role of individuals across organisational levels and combining adult education with organisational behaviour, sparked interest and prompted discussion.

In one session, I also acted as a discussant, meaning that I commented on a conference paper assigned to me in advance and opened the discussion after the presentation. The paper examined the connection between the quality of interaction between top and middle management and strategy implementation, focusing particularly on trust, openness and reciprocity. The topic was very close to my own research interests and dissertation, which made it especially engaging reading. More broadly, the presentations in the Strategy as Practice track covered a wide range of topics, including the relationship between informality and formality, organisational agility and, of course, artificial intelligence.

Conference days involve a great deal of listening, discussion and thinking. At the same time, they offer a refreshing contrast to ordinary research work, where one often works on one’s own research alone. It is valuable to receive comments and different perspectives from the international research community on a topic with which one spends so much time individually. This not only deepens one’s understanding of research work but also supports the development of one’s researcher identity.

Perspectives on Change

During my conference trip, change was present on many levels: for example, in the conference talks and research topics, in reflecting on my own researcher identity, and in the technical challenges faced by air traffic. In addition, change was visible in a very concrete way on the Royal Holloway campus and in the cityscape of London, where old and new worlds blend in a unique way. Looking west from Waterloo Bridge across the Thames, Westminster stands majestically by the river with its historic buildings, while to the east the modern glass façades of the City rise through the clouds. The physical distance is only a few kilometres, but the temporal distance spans hundreds of years.

Westminster

City

As in the cityscape, old and new often coexist in organisations as well, and renewal does not happen overnight. Goals can be written into strategies and officially put into effect on a given day “on paper”, but people’s skills, thinking and ways of working do not automatically change at the same moment. Since organisations are made up of people, change at a practical level involves changes in how people think and act. This is why change ultimately takes shape in everyday workplace practices through interaction and learning.

The BAM conference was an instructive glimpse into the academic world. It illustrated the diversity of the research world even within a single research area. Discussions with people approaching the same research topic from different perspectives are important, and different research contexts, designs and methods can provide ideas for one’s own research, both consciously and sometimes unconsciously. Although the conference was only a brief moment in my research journey into the world of academia, I returned home not only with fresh ideas, but also with new perspectives on change.

Teemu Ojala, PhD researcher

In early September, I attended the British Academy of Management’s 40th anniversary conference at the Royal Holloway campus of the University of London.
