You can use the following questions to help you to choose the right open access (OA) channel for your research publication:<\/p>\n\n\n\t<div id=\"accordion-block_86bb09200c7da26e7bb5b5b9a30c4ecb\" class=\"accordions\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"accordion accordion-js\">\n\t\t\t\t<button class=\"accordion__button\" aria-controls=\"content-1884\" aria-expanded=\"false\" id=\"accordion-control-1884\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"accordion__heading\" >\n\t\t\t\t\t\t1. What kind of OA do you and your co-authors want for your article?\t\t\t\t\t<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t<\/button>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"accordion__content\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-control-1884\" aria-hidden=\"true\" id=\"content-1884\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>Gold, Diamond or Green OA? Gold open access usually requires an APC fee for immediate access on the journal&#8217;s homepage, while green open access (i.e. self-archiving) involves placing the accepted manuscript in a publication repository after a potential embargo period.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"accordion accordion-js\">\n\t\t\t\t<button class=\"accordion__button\" aria-controls=\"content-7395\" aria-expanded=\"false\" id=\"accordion-control-7395\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"accordion__heading\" >\n\t\t\t\t\t\t2. Does your funder\/institution have an open policy whose requirements you need to consider?\t\t\t\t\t<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t<\/button>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"accordion__content\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-control-7395\" aria-hidden=\"true\" id=\"content-7395\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>Verify if your funder or institution has specific open access mandates. This can influence your choice of journal and the type of open access you select. At UEF, follow the recommendations of the UEF Open Science and Research Policy.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"accordion accordion-js\">\n\t\t\t\t<button class=\"accordion__button\" aria-controls=\"content-1927\" aria-expanded=\"false\" id=\"accordion-control-1927\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"accordion__heading\" >\n\t\t\t\t\t\t3. Are your co-authors bound by any OA requirements?\t\t\t\t\t<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t<\/button>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"accordion__content\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-control-1927\" aria-hidden=\"true\" id=\"content-1927\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>Different institutions may have variable open access requirements.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"accordion accordion-js\">\n\t\t\t\t<button class=\"accordion__button\" aria-controls=\"content-9153\" aria-expanded=\"false\" id=\"accordion-control-9153\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"accordion__heading\" >\n\t\t\t\t\t\t4. Does your preferred journal provide the OA option you need?\t\t\t\t\t<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t<\/button>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"accordion__content\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-control-9153\" aria-hidden=\"true\" id=\"content-9153\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>Confirm that your preferred journal offers the open access option you want.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"accordion accordion-js\">\n\t\t\t\t<button class=\"accordion__button\" aria-controls=\"content-1371\" aria-expanded=\"false\" id=\"accordion-control-1371\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"accordion__heading\" >\n\t\t\t\t\t\t5. If you choose green OA, what is the publisher\u2019s embargo period and which repository will you choose?\t\t\t\t\t<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t<\/button>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"accordion__content\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-control-1371\" aria-hidden=\"true\" id=\"content-1371\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>Can you use your institutional publication repository (like UEF eRepository at UEF)? Do your co-authors prefer using a certain repository? Is the potential embargo period acceptable? You can use the <a href=\"https:\/\/openpolicyfinder.jisc.ac.uk\/\"><strong>Open Policy Finder<\/strong><\/a> to see a journal\u2019s copyright and self-archiving rules, but these can change &#8211; so check these also directly with the journal.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"accordion accordion-js\">\n\t\t\t\t<button class=\"accordion__button\" aria-controls=\"content-5843\" aria-expanded=\"false\" id=\"accordion-control-5843\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"accordion__heading\" >\n\t\t\t\t\t\t6. If you choose gold OA, what is the article processing charge you need to pay and where will you get the funds?\t\t\t\t\t<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t<\/button>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"accordion__content\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-control-5843\" aria-hidden=\"true\" id=\"content-5843\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>Are there APC benefits via your organisation (at UEF, see <a href=\"https:\/\/search.scifree.se\/uef\"><strong>Journal Search Tool<\/strong><\/a><strong>)<\/strong>? Funding might also be available through your research grant or your department.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"accordion accordion-js\">\n\t\t\t\t<button class=\"accordion__button\" aria-controls=\"content-773\" aria-expanded=\"false\" id=\"accordion-control-773\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"accordion__heading\" >\n\t\t\t\t\t\t7. What is the copyright\/license policy of the publisher, i.e. how can the published work be reused?\t\t\t\t\t<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t<\/button>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"accordion__content\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-control-773\" aria-hidden=\"true\" id=\"content-773\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>The most commonly used license is the CC BY license which has liberal reuse rights attached to it. Discuss with your co-authors about other license options if needed.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"accordion accordion-js\">\n\t\t\t\t<button class=\"accordion__button\" aria-controls=\"content-8152\" aria-expanded=\"false\" id=\"accordion-control-8152\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"accordion__heading\" >\n\t\t\t\t\t\t8. Does your preferred journal meet your quality standards?\t\t\t\t\t<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t<\/button>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"accordion__content\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-control-8152\" aria-hidden=\"true\" id=\"content-8152\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>The same assessments of a journals quality that you would normally apply should be used to scrutinise open access journals in terms of status, scope, suitability, publication speed, peer review, impact factor, JUFO classification (in Finland), editorial board etc. For example, is the journal you have selected registered with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.doaj.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Directory of Open Access Journals<\/a> (DOAJ)<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>and the Publisher a member of <a href=\"http:\/\/oaspa.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association<\/a> (OASPA)?\u00a0How long has the journal been established?<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.uef.fi\/bors\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/232\/2025\/08\/pexels-pixabay-162553.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3050\" style=\"width:418px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.uef.fi\/bors\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/232\/2025\/08\/pexels-pixabay-162553.jpg 640w, https:\/\/blogs.uef.fi\/bors\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/232\/2025\/08\/pexels-pixabay-162553-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tools for finding a suitable publishing channel<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Try different tools, such as the ones below, to assist you in finding the right publishing channel for your publication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/jfp.csc.fi\/jufoportal\"><strong>JUFO<\/strong><\/a> (Publication Forum) portal is a service intended for searching information on scientific series, conferences and book publishers included in the Publication Forum classification used in Finland. You can find e.g. the publication forum level and the open access status of the journal.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/doaj.org\/\"><strong>DOAJ<\/strong><\/a> (Directory of Open Access Journals). Find a suitable OA journal for your discipline. DOAJ is a community-curated online directory which contains a comprehensive list of OA journals of various disciplines. Search e.g. by subject, language or country. NB: Many of the journals listed by the DOAJ do not charge APCs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/thinkchecksubmit.org\/\"><strong>Think. Check. Submit<\/strong><\/a> checklist helps you assess the quality of the journal you are considering.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/journalfinder.elsevier.com\/\"><strong>Elsevier Journal Finder<\/strong><\/a> is a tool by Elsevier. You can limit your search to a certain field of science or to OA journals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/jane.biosemantics.org\/index.php\"><strong>JANE<\/strong><\/a> (Journal Article Name Estimator) helps you choose a suitable journal, focusing on disciplines of biomedicine. The search is limited to publications indexed by the Medline database. OA journals are highlighted in the results.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/journalcheckertool.org\/\"><strong>Journal Checker Tool<\/strong><\/a> checks the journal\u2019s Plan S compatibility.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.oapen.org\/home\"><strong>OAPEN<\/strong><\/a>. The online library and publication platform for open access academic books.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.scimagojr.com\/\"><strong>SCImago Journal &amp; Country Rank<\/strong><\/a> portal contains indicators for evaluating journals and countries that are based on the Scopus database (e.g. h-index, number of citations, SJR). You can limit your search to OA journals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are still not sure about your choice, speak to your supervisor or colleagues about your publishing options. University library staff can also provide useful guidance and advice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Finding open access articles and books<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When searching for scientific publications, many scientific databases, such as PubMed, Scopus, or Web of Science, allow you to limit your search to open access publications. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UEF Library provides <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uef.fi\/en\/library\/guide-for-open-publications-searching\"><strong>Guide for open publications searching<\/strong><\/a>. It is worth checking whenever you need tips for finding open access publications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some highlights from the guide:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/core.ac.uk\/\"><strong>CORE<\/strong><\/a> (Collection of open access research papers). Scientific open access articles from journals and publication repositories.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.doabooks.org\/\"><strong>DOAB<\/strong><\/a> (Directory of Open Access Books). Lists peer-reviewed open access books from various publishers.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/doaj.org\/\"><strong>DOAJ<\/strong><\/a> (Directory of Open Access Journals). Can be used for searching for open access journals, but also for finding open access articles.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/openalex.org\/\"><strong>OpenAlex<\/strong><\/a>. A free, open access catalogue of the global research system that indexes scholarly works, authors, institutions and related metadata.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.openbookpublishers.com\/\"><strong>Open Book Publishers<\/strong><\/a>. An academic book publisher whose electronic books are open to all.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, check out these preprint servers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/zenodo.org\/\"><strong>Zenodo<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; Multidisciplinary<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.preprints.org\/\"><strong>Preprints<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; Multidisciplinary<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/\"><strong>Arxiv<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; Physics, mathematics, computer science<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biorxiv.org\/\"><strong>bioRxiv<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; Life sciences<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/osf.io\/preprints\/lawarxiv\"><strong>LawArxiv<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; Law<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medrxiv.org\/\">medRxiv<\/a><\/strong> &#8211; Medicine and health sciences<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.psyarxiv.com\/\"><strong>PsyArxiv<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; Behavioural sciences<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/osf.io\/preprints\/socarxiv\"><strong>SocArxiv<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; Social sciences and humanities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Browser add-ons and extensions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are also browser extensions available that are useful for finding free, legal versions of academic publications. These tools can be used for checking if an article can be found as open access on the web without hitting paywalls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/unpaywall.org\/\">Unpaywall<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 Automatically displays a green Unpaywall icon in the right corner of the browser window if the article is available in an open access repository.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/microsoftedge.microsoft.com\/addons\/detail\/google-scholar-button\/fciokoalnclhnonofghacdplgpafdcgl\"><strong>Google Scholar Button<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 The extension does not open the article directly but displays a reference for it in a Google Scholar window. From there you can search for an open access version of the article.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Remember:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>There are numerous services available for searching OA journals, articles and repositories.
