Opening education for all

In recent years, the role of open education has become increasingly emphasized as part of the open science framework. What does open education actually mean? Key concepts in open education include open educational resources (OER, i.e. openly available study materials) and open educational practices (OEP, i.e. practices that make teaching and learning more accessible, transparent and collaborative).

Open education seeks to ensure that learning is accessible and inclusive for everyone. This involves reducing barriers to participation and expanding the availability and accessibility of educational opportunities. It also encompasses a range of pedagogical and technological approaches that support self-directed, learner-centered education – flexible in terms of time and location. For a learner, open education offers countless opportunities to learn, develop and find new perspectives. Open education is becoming more important in European higher education.
