Guiding principles of open science

The promotion of open science has been embraced at international, national, and organizational levels. From the perspective of UEF, in particular, the key documents guiding open science efforts include:

UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science

One international tool for implementing open science practices around the world is UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science which was adopted by member states in November 2021.

The Recommendation defines shared values and principles for open science and identify concrete measures on open access and open data, with proposals to bring citizens closer to science and commitments to facilitate the production and dissemination of scientific knowledge around the world.

Recommendation is intended to influence the development of national laws and practices.

The Declaration for Open Science and Research 2025-2030

The Declaration for Open Science and Research (2025) by Open Science Coordination in Finland outlines a shared vision and core principles for promoting openness in research in Finland. The declaration encourages organizations and individuals to commit to advancing open science through transparency, collaboration, and accessibility. It builds on previous national efforts and aligns with international developments, such as the UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science. The aim is to foster a culture where open science is an integral part of everyday research practices.
